After finding multiple ways to lose leads and playing inconsistent basketball for much of the last month, NC State finally finished a game against Wake Forest Saturday, picking up a 14-point victory after dropping seven straight conference games.

NC State forced 23 Wake Forest turnovers (15 in the first half) and held down Ish Smith, forcing the senior guard to commit five turnovers and holding him to 12 points. Al-Farouq Aminu and Chas McFarland committed six turnovers each. The Wolfpack was able to score 18 points off those 23 turnovers.

“I congratulate NC State,” Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio said. “I thought they played very well. They came out and set a certain tone and we didn’t adjust. Our offense put way too much pressure on our defense today. We held them to 40% but we had 15 turnovers in one half.”

Sidney Lowe said NC State’s transition defense, which only allowed eight fast break points, was key to shutting down the Wake Forest offense.

“If you allow them to run on you, they’re going to beat you. Their bigs run the floor very well. You have to stop the transition offense and we did a good job of that. We had deflections and were diving for the ball. As far as that aspect it’s probably the best defensive game we’ve played. Our kids were committed and it showed.”

Five players scored in double figures and the Wolfpack went 6 of 12 from behind the arc after struggling to make shots during the last seven games. CJ Williams came off the bench and poured in 12 points, hitting two three-pointers in a tw0-minute stretch to keep NC State’s lead above 10 points.

Williams, who has struggled throughout the year, said he’s continued to work hard.

“All week in practice I’ve been working on my shot and working on getting my confidence back and I was able to continue to shoot the ball,” Williams said. “Coach had confidence in me and I know if he has confidence in me I have to have confidence in myself.”

Lowe also credited Williams, among others, for being more verbal on the court and in the locker room, something he said helped NC State to reverting to the bad habits its developed during its losing streak.

“We were more energetic coming out,” Williams said. “Sometimes we were a little dead coming out of halftime. Guys were talking in the locker room and it kept us all focused on what we wanted to do. We all just stayed positive.”

Wake Forest shot 0 for 12 from behind the arc, something that hadn’t happened for the Deacons in 575 games. The last time an NC State opponent didn’t make a three-pointer was in 1990, when Maryland failed to do so.

Dennis Horner picked up his third double-double in the last four ball games, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Horner, who had never recorded a double-double before the Virginia Tech game Feb. 10.

Despite Horner’s performance on the glass, Wake Forest out-rebounded NC State 50-31 and pulled down 27 offensive boards (8 by Aminu). However, the Deacons could only manage 19 second chance points on those opportunities.

“They got on me about rebounding, because I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t rebounding,” Horner said. “They sat me down and talked to me about it, I took it to heart and I wasn’t going to let that stop me from playing so I’m coming out here tonight and trying to get as many rebounds as I can. ”

Tracy Smith led NC State with 14 points. Javi Gonzalez scored 11 points and dished out six assists while only turning the ball over twice. The Wolfpack had 15 turnovers but Wake Forest was only able to manage seven points off those miscues.

Senior guard Farnold Degand (13 points) said the win couldn’t have come at a better time for a team which had found so many ways to lose games during the last month.

“We’re more relieved than anything,” he said. “The last couple weeks we’ve been fighting and come out short on a few games. To pull it out today felt great.”

    Great win for the pack.

Sid did what he normally does, the differnce is the guards finally hit some shots.

CJ, we need this every game!

I have been very hard on this coach and team. But this was a good game. We don’t always have to talk big picture all the time. Every game matters. If for no other reason than to feel good about beating the opposing team on the court today. Good game and the Pack can enjoy this win today.

man i missed the dang game. i got to the radio in time to hear that gaudio instructed his team not to foul anymore. i’ve felt all season this team could go out and compete with any ACC team. it’s great to get a win.

a good day, and there’s still more than a hint of negativity.. why can’t some of you just live in the moment for a DAY?!

i’m most impressed with horner’s numbers and his comments about rebounding. that’s what i’m talking about, play with some balls.

    GOOD JOB SIDNEY AND CO!

61Packer, that is a sad attempt to promote your belief that Sid is not a good coach. We won today because we did shoot well…we were 6-12 from 3 and 20-24 from the FT line. I know it hurts to say it, but it’s not Sid’s fault these guys miss shots some games and make the exact same shots in other games. All the coach can do is get us wide open looks which we get every game. After that, he has to bring in more talented players to make those shots consistently which he is doing next season.

Fowler is a piece of work. Valvano gets recognition during a second half timeout today, and David freakin’ Thompson is honored WITH another player at halftime of the Maryland game. Unbelieveable. He does not get it. He and HWSNBN have the same appreciation for our tradition and history–ZIP. Chancellor Woodson, please evaluate his performance immediately. The decision is obvious.

    I could not agree more.

  6. packfan03 02/20/2010 at 10:47 PM #

Coach Lowe had the SAME gameplan he’s had this entire year. This time, we hit timely open shots. In our losses we haven’t.

But seriously, we definitely should indict Coach Lowe for our team’s success today. Those open looks in the second half DEFINITELY weren’t there in other games.

When our players, in press conferences, say that Lowe is doing a TERRIFIC job and putting them in positions to win but they aren’t taking advantage of it, they are lying. They truly believe he’s an incompetent coach incapable of teaching.

And finally, our record has nothing to do with our talent. If Coach K had four three star players and one four star player starting, they’d be ACC champions.

And lastly, the three paragraphs previous to this sentence weren’t sarcastic.

  7. Gjones1968 02/20/2010 at 11:03 PM #

It’s all about defense. If this team wants to win championships, each player must be committed to playing defense first. The offense will come but it begins and ends with defense. Going foward,I hope the players take that to heart. If they committ to playing defense they will win a lot more than they lose.

It’s not about how many points you score, it’s about whether or not you can stop somebody from scoring. We did that today.

well, missing the game. i took much delight in looking at the photos from the game. some pretty good stuff. sid hugn horner is priceless. i think sidney may very well be the happier of two in that photo. and, i did get to hear the post game on the radio, man he sounded like a kid in the candy store. i’m sure he was more excited about this win than even the young players.

  9. choppack1 02/21/2010 at 12:58 AM #

Still lots of room for improvement on the boards today. We got killed in that area – and we continue to struggle in this critical facet of the game.

    Happy for team and Sid.

  10. travelwolf 02/21/2010 at 1:37 AM #

definitely our problem is guard play – when the guards play well, we win. as simple as that. no offense to Javi, Degan, or Julius, but the problem is that we don’t have any 4-5 star guards. next year should be better. much better. believe it or not, but we’ll miss horner.

  11. Wolfy__79 02/21/2010 at 1:54 AM #

i agree its guard play! just watched the replay. despite the score, it was really a close game. my hat’s off to the team for playing through the tough spots in the game. good to have a week off after a win. should make the practices a little more exciting. i’ll miss horner. my problem with him is he could have been doing this all year. maybe he has woken up? i saw on more than one occasion where he was very involved with getting the offense set off of high screens… i’d like to see that leadership more from a guard, but i expect to see it from the seniors.

  12. GAWolf 02/21/2010 at 4:05 AM #

I havent seen this mentioned but i liked how Sid pulled Horner at the end and gave him a chance to be recognized by the fans. The senior needed that. Good for Sid.

  13. EdMar 02/21/2010 at 7:58 AM #

Great win! Good effort! Outside shots! Free throws! Good jod Sidney

    A couple of thing.

    – Scott do not be afraid to shoot when open. He passed on several wide open shots.

    – Let practice breaks…we missed a couple of two on ones and one three on one, the spacing did not looked right.

  14. Sw0rdf1sh 02/21/2010 at 8:31 AM #

    Good Point GAWolf.

C’mon Packfan03, ease up a little. Or either take off your Duke jersey when you post on here.

  15. philliepacker 02/21/2010 at 8:45 AM #

3-10 by all means a great job, lets extend Sid’s contract!

  16. JeremyH 02/21/2010 at 9:02 AM #

travelwolf-we will miss Horner, but I think Howell fits in nicely because he can shoot the three and rebound. but neither he nor Wood (correct me if I’m wrong) have shown they can knock down jumpers as consistently as Horner did in his freshman campaign. But then again, Howell doesn’t have enough threes and Wood doesn’t have enough twos, to really compare.

I think one major difference is we did not implode with both Javi and Degand out. Instead we knocked down jumpers. It was a very nice change. Also the offense has more motion, and not just haphazard motion. Although I’m not sure if we used screens as well as we ought to.

I think finishing strong this season will at least help with these nervous recruits that haven’t signed yet, but who knows, really. I think we will manage fine with just Cothron, regardless we just need another power forward to anticipate Smith’s departure after next year.

I think Leslie has more to benefit coming here than we do. I guess the decision will depend on whether he looks past Calipari’s hype, and sees that the guard class here will be stronger than at Kentucky. But that last bit is perhaps a semi-informed conclusion.

  17. packfan03 02/21/2010 at 9:23 AM #

    Sw0rdf1sh,

I was being entirely sarcastic. I’m a big Lowe supporter and think a lot of the bashing of him and the team this season has been uncalled for.

I’m glad you said something, because I definitely didn’t want my post to be considered negative. I was at the game, and look forward to attending BC as well to honor our seniors!

  18. 61Packer 02/21/2010 at 9:24 AM #

MA Wolfpack, I’ve been saying on here forever that our biggest weakness under Lowe has been nonexistent defense. You can’t build a program without defense, and when you shoot poorly, you’ll always lose without defense.

If I want to hit on Lowe, which I often do on here, I’ll come out and say it, not hide it. My comment that we can win when we play good defense is what I meant. Winning begins with solid team defense. We didn’t shoot very well yesterday, especially in the first half, but we made Wake look just awful because our defense smothered ’em. I’d like to see a lot more of that the rest of the season.

  19. ncsumi 02/21/2010 at 10:16 AM #

I am glad we won; I’ll be gladder when we consistently give effort; I’ll be gladdest when we win consistently.

If Lowe can deliver the motivation, effort, and coaching he did yesterday and a few games earlier in the year, he deserves to stay.

If he delivers the suck that we have seen in about 10 of our losses this year (and most in the past two years), he should be shown the door. I am a “hater” (not the man but the product) when it seems that the fans are the only ones that give a shit.

  20. Pack1998 02/21/2010 at 10:31 AM #

Great game – Nice job by the team.

I don’t think anyone has ill will against Coach Lowe. People just want to see more consistency. People want to see a good team play and they want progress.

Let’s see this team close out the rest of the season strong!

  21. Sw0rdf1sh 02/21/2010 at 11:07 AM #

Packfan03. Loller! I was reading it and I guess didn’t read the sarcasm in the last paragraph….not so much the first 3.

All I could think was “really”?

  22. packfan03 02/21/2010 at 11:24 AM #

^My bad – I’ve seen sarcasm fail on posts so many times, don’t know why I thought my post would be successful!

  23. Dr. BadgerPack 02/21/2010 at 12:05 PM #

Perhaps the only person smarter than the good doc (haha) is my brother– except he’s a Duke fan– and he has said multiple times we will be great (not good, great) next year… so I have some hope.

  24. packplantpath 02/21/2010 at 12:08 PM #

Color me a skeptic and a hater if you want, but I’ve seen this before this season. We did beat Duke earlier yet have still managed to be dead last in the ACC. That was even more meaningful since it was a win after a stretch of good, hard fought games that were close.

I’m happy for the team, but until they manage to string together a few games with hard play (not necessarily even wins), I will continue to be a skeptic. One game is not a trend.

    Let the flaming commence……

  25. Wulfpack 02/21/2010 at 12:36 PM #

This is what boggles Pack fans. We beat Duke and Wake handedly. We took it to Maryland for a half of basketball, then fell apart. What is says it that we CAN compete with the best in the league. What is also says if we have been truly miserable against the middle/bottom of the league. This is all about CONSISTENCY.

Good win for the Pack. Glad to see Horner step into a leadership role, and what a welcome surprise CJW was. When Javi doesn’t turn it over every other possession, we can be a good team. At least there is now hope for the ACC Tournament. We know we can beat the best.
