NC State 52, Virginia Tech 72

On a night when even the NC State dance team couldn’t get its act together and Richard Howell couldn’t make it out of the tunnel for warm ups, the basketball team could do little right in a 20-point loss to the Hokies of Virginia Tech. The 72-52 defeat marks the fifth straight ACC loss for the Pack and puts the Pack in last place in the ACC at 2-8, just a half game behind 2-7 North Carolina. The Tar Heels fell to Duke by 10 Wednesday night in Chapel Hill.

Howell, scheduled to start for Dennis Horner, cut his leg on the way out to warm up and had to receive stitches.

“Richard was going to start and on his way out to the floor for warm ups he cut his leg on something and cut a big gash in his leg and had to get stitches,” Sidney Lowe said. “He tried to go but he couldn’t really run and couldn’t get back on defense. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow and it will be day-to-day.”

Virginia Tech wasted little time Wednesday night, hitting its first 10 shots and building a 26-7 lead with 10:59 left in the first half. The Hokies shot nearly 53% from the field for the night and better than 42% from three point range. NC State’s stat line couldn’t have been more different — 28% shooting and 0-11 from behind the arc.

Josh Davis said the team needs to start games better to get things turned around.

“We just have to come out harder, it’s tough to pick up the energy from the start. I’m not really sure what’s going on we just have to practice and work hard and we just can’t keep doing this,” he said. “[Lowe] just told us the truth, things we have to work on. We’ll have spurts in the middle of the game but we just have to play like that the whole game.”

NC State cut the lead to seven at 38-31 with 17:50 left in the second half, but Virginia Tech promptly went on an 11 to one run to stretch the lead to 17. NC State never got any closer than 13 the rest of the way.

The lone bright spot for the Wolfpack as a team came on the glass, as NC State held a 45-37 edge and collected 27 offensive rebounds. And while did create second chance opportunities by hitting the glass, the Pack could only generate 12 second chance points.

“We didn’t convert as many as we needed to but it certainly says we were battling,” Lowe said. “That’s a very good ball club with arguably the best back court in our conference. It’s a very good team.”

Dorenzo Hudson and Malcolm Delaney led the way for the Hokies. Hudson scored 14 of his team-high 23 points in the second half and Delaney tallied 15, with 10 coming in the second 20 minutes.

Dennis Horner did much of the work on the glass for the Wolfpack, pulling down 16 rebounds (nine offensive) while also scoring 13 points. Josh Davis and Tracy Smith both scored 12. No other member of the Wolfpack broke into double figures. Farnold Degand, Javier Gonzalez and Scott Wood shot 2 of 19 combined in 70 minutes.

“They punched us in the mouth and we just sat there and looked at them while we were bleeding. It’s tough. We’re going to have to get this turned around somehow,” Wood said. “If you ask me I’ve played terrible. This is probably the worst season I’ve had in my life. I don’t know what’s gone wrong. Instead of shooting 500 shots a day I’m going to have to start shooting 1,000.”

Lowe, who was visibly frustrated following the game, said there is nothing to do but keep working.

“I don’t feel helpless. You go to work, that’s my job. The thing that’s frustrating is you can’t shoot the ball for them, and we shoot a lot in practice. You can’t get out there and do it for them,” he said. “You can’t make decisions for them. You try to put them in situations, you work on passing to the post and that’s all you can do. I don’t feel helpless because you just go back to work, there is another game coming.”

The Wolfpack hits the road again following tonight’s game and will take on Carolina in Chapel Hill Saturday. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.

“Now it’s “wait until the good recruits are here.” What will it be next year?”

It will be wait ’til next year, just like it is every year.

Last night our team looked totally confused on both ends of the floor. That is on the coaches. Half of our players look like they have not shaved in days- looks like crap. They need to shave including our coach. And learn how to play sharp and look sharp. If they did not have such nice uniforms they could be mistaken for a city league team.

Will we ever be a national power again?

“If Sid tanks next year with two 5* recruits in his backcourt I don’t think you will be getting much resistance with the fire Lowe sentiment. At least not on this website.”

He’s already tanked with two five-star recruits in his FRONTcourt: Costner and Hickson.

I say that it is always darkest before the dawn. This team is young and tired. They are doing the best they can considering only one of the players is a legitimate acc caliber player right now. (Tracy Smith) Wood should reach that level by next year as should Howell. Davis Vandenburg and hopfully Painter should be there by their Jr years. Brown and Harrow may need a year as well. Hopefully not. This team does not have the talent yet and they are weary of their fans always shaking their finger at them. Many critisized Amato because he could not consitantly keep assistants. Well if we run sid out before he has at least 5 acc caliber players would show the world that we are the Amato of the NCAA. I belive in you Sidney Lowe. I believe in you Tracey Smith. I believe in Wood, Howell, Vandenburg and Davis. I believe that Brown, Harrow and yes even Leslie will play like the Kentucky freshman are this year. I say fight through the darkness team. Make this experience work for you and make you stronger. I like the future of this team. I know it seams that we are always looking to the future but this time in my heart I believe that sid is going to do right by us. We need to give him time. I feel the same way about TOB. We are close it would be a shame to give up on them right before the payoff. I stand behind you Sidney, I stand behind you TOB. I am still part of your pack. Let us 300 stand alone!!!!!

It had to be done. I will try to shine my light into the darkness.

    Go Wolfpack!!!!!

Everything about NC State’s program is desirable for coaches except for 2 things–

1.) the talent level on the current roster
    2.) Lee Fowler

Take away either one of those deficiencies and it should be an easy sell. Leave both of them, and I think like Noah says, you end up with another bridge coach.

Then again, Calipari took his recruits with him from Memphis to UK. Players follow coaches. Bring in a coach that is already out there recruiting and we can fill that talent hole.

If you fix problem 1 & 2, I don’t think you’d have to bring in an up and comer.

That was an ole fashion ass whoopin. It might be just what the doctor ordered, to get them going for the UNx game.

One more thing, what was the ref smoking before the game. Did you see that no call on the last play of the 1st half. What was that. If that foul is called we go in down by 8 then cut it down even more after the break and could possibly make a game of it. I’ve seen more screwy refing this year.

One more thing I like the fact that Wood takes some accountability for his play that takes some character. I still say he needs to drive the ball a little more. Like fake a pass down low and blow by your guy. Get a shot or fouled or something.

Results are not subjective, they simply exist. If we do well next year, Coach Lowe deserves praise.

The only flaw in that is that if we do well next year because of the talent level, we could arguably do EVEN BETTER given a better coach to lead that talent. I could possibly have led last year’s Carolina team to a national championship. But that doesn’t mean I’m a good coach. Yes, Sid deserves the credit for bringing in a good recruiting class. No one really disputes that, although some are skeptical of even the best recruits until they prove “they got game” at the college level.

I liked the tire analogy. Someone said players are like tires. You definitely need good tires. But the coach is the engine. And we’re driving a clunker right now with some decent tires on it. I’d rather have a Porsche, and give up a tire or two for now, knowing there will always be more tires in the future.

The question is, will be bring in a Porsche to replace our clunker?

Zen wolf -my heart is with you but my brain is not. Maybe we will have that peter pan moment, “I do believe in fairies”. I want to be an optimist however I did not see 100 percent effort. In the Duke/UNC game I saw it but sadly by all appearances our guys gave up. I was an optimist to a fault until the Maryland game. Believe me it is not that no one wants Sid to succeed but I am not sure Sid or the team buys into success. Nothing would please me more than for many of us to be wrong. That would be some tasty crow. Sid has to give us something to grasp onto that is tangible and proves he is committed to success and it is awful late in the season for that.

wait til football season when our defense takes the field with the excellent additon in tenuta at linebackers coach!!!

  13. Wolfy__79 02/11/2010 at 6:08 PM #

yes sid has to do something this year… instead of continuing to keep putting us through this mess. he’s got a good shot of easing alot of our pain saturday. we can’t beat those clowns and not look back. i sincerely hope he takes advantage of the situation.

  14. bradleyb123 02/11/2010 at 6:11 PM #

    Well said, fullmoon1.

I’ve been one of Sidney’s strongest supporters until the last few conference games. It seems Sidney is losing this team that started out a little better than many of us thought they would. I believe part of the problem is we still don’t have the star PG that we’ve been missing for so long, and he’s coming in next year. But I now believe it’s more than that. People talk about how well Sidney did when we had Atsur. But we didn’t do that much until that ACC tournament run. If not for that, it would have been just the first miserable season of many for Sidney.

If we’ll go after a top-notch coach, I’d say do it. But if we’re going to have another “experiment”, I’d rather just give Sidney next year with these players that he has coming in. And it’s not an open-ended deal, either. He’ll have to win with true freshmen next year to win me back. He doesn’t get to wait until they’re upperclassmen with more experience. I mean next year, and next year only. And we better make it to the NCAA tournament and have a good year in the conference, too.

  15. bradleyb123 02/11/2010 at 6:12 PM #

wait til football season when our defense takes the field with the excellent addition in tenuta at linebackers coach!!!

We still have Archer, though. I think we made a good trade in this exchange. But Archer is the big problem, is he not?

  16. mwcric 02/11/2010 at 6:26 PM #

Yep – frontcourt, I meant. Sorry ’bout that.

    the next years recruiting class?
    Fire Sid.

“The only flaw in that is that if we do well next year because of the talent level, we could arguably do EVEN BETTER given a better coach to lead that talent.”

bradleyb123, now you’ve taken subjectivity to another level. If Brown, Harrow, and Cothron turn out to be superstars (the thought process you’re rolling with here, correct me if I’m wrong), perhaps a different coach would be able to get even more out of them. I’ve never stated that Sidney Lowe is the best coach out there. But we could get lost in hypothetical arguments for years if we allowed ourselves to. I’ve stated several times that the mis-managed coaching search screwed us over with Sidney. I know you agree with me here. I just think potentially, with that talent coming in next year, we could be special. (stressing ‘think’ and ‘potentially’).

Listen, I won’t disagree with you if you say there are coaches superior to Lowe out there. But, if these three become superstars, would this other coach have recruited them? Remember, Sid began recruiting Harrow when he was a 3 star recruit and NOBODY was interested in him. If Harrow alone becomes a superstar, you have to credit Lowe. He saw him first. I know I’m speaking a lot of “what if’s”, but I’ve watched Harrow play on several occasions this year – the kid is special.

Ultimately, I understand that my opinion isn’t going to convince anyone – I just want people to realize that Fowler is the cause, and Lowe is the symptom. Diagnose the cause, and the symptom might go away. If Fowler conducts the next coaching search, we’re going to have another symptom.

  19. whope90 02/11/2010 at 7:46 PM #

There are alot of “if thinking” going on! If we give Sidney another year, if the recruits turn out to be superstars, if the coaching search was or will be conducted well. Coulda, woulda shoulda, like Bill Parcells always said, your record is what you are: we are a 2-8/14-11 loser! It takes a combination of talent and superior coaching to win at the college level and last night,we did not have a coach. Yes, he has pro expereience, yes he can recruit a little, but if anyone saw that game last night, the lack of effort, the defeatest attitude of the players and lack of fan support and overall gloom of the team and how it affects the university then clearly it is time for a change!! No one player or recruit or buyout or wishful thinking or ifs is going to turn Sidney Lowe into the next John Wooden!!

Regardless of the talent, opposition or situations last night, that was a total breakdown and it all starts with the coach! Coaches today are paid an insane amount of money and have tons of fame and glory in their grasp! They know the price they must pay if they do not succeed and yes require them to beat UNC and Duke on a regular basis.

If we want to have our program revived, then Sidney Lowe needs to be fired at seasons end! I would only wait five minutes after the ACC Tourney loss!! There are plenty of good candidates:Jeff Capel, Gregg Marshall, Cornel’s coach, Butler’s coach etc etc!

All we have to do is hope the AD wakes up from his coma and does it or he should be fired six minutes after the tourney loss!!

  20. Rufftown Wolf 02/11/2010 at 8:44 PM #

We’ve beat Duke this year and we get a another shot to beat the Tarholes on Saturday. I wouldn’t fire Lowe just yet, there is a lot of Basketball to be played. I like the guys he’s brought in. If he gets that PG and SG he needs with Howell, Smith, Wood. This TEAM could be a top ten team. And I’m gauging that off Duke being in the top ten this year.

I hope we take it to the Tarholes this weekend!

This is what Fowler gets for hiring with his heart, and not his head. No college coaching exerience and thats what you get, Jed. Thats what you freakin get. Thanks 4 nothing.

  24. blpack 02/11/2010 at 9:36 PM #

This falls on Lee’s lap. His hire when no one else would take the job because no good coach will work for him as men’s coach. Maybe the next hire will be done by someone else. It is not working out for Sidney. We should not let 18 year olds hyjack the program.

was Ole Roy getting a massage at University Massage when he made his now infamous “catastrophe” comment. Boy he can sure put his foot in his mouth. What was his massage therapists name? Bunny? Candi?

I don’t frequent such establishments myself. Go check it out next time you are in Chapel Hell. Its right down the street from Granville Towers.
