NC State 52, Virginia Tech 72

On a night when even the NC State dance team couldn’t get its act together and Richard Howell couldn’t make it out of the tunnel for warm ups, the basketball team could do little right in a 20-point loss to the Hokies of Virginia Tech. The 72-52 defeat marks the fifth straight ACC loss for the Pack and puts the Pack in last place in the ACC at 2-8, just a half game behind 2-7 North Carolina. The Tar Heels fell to Duke by 10 Wednesday night in Chapel Hill.

Howell, scheduled to start for Dennis Horner, cut his leg on the way out to warm up and had to receive stitches.

“Richard was going to start and on his way out to the floor for warm ups he cut his leg on something and cut a big gash in his leg and had to get stitches,” Sidney Lowe said. “He tried to go but he couldn’t really run and couldn’t get back on defense. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow and it will be day-to-day.”

Virginia Tech wasted little time Wednesday night, hitting its first 10 shots and building a 26-7 lead with 10:59 left in the first half. The Hokies shot nearly 53% from the field for the night and better than 42% from three point range. NC State’s stat line couldn’t have been more different — 28% shooting and 0-11 from behind the arc.

Josh Davis said the team needs to start games better to get things turned around.

“We just have to come out harder, it’s tough to pick up the energy from the start. I’m not really sure what’s going on we just have to practice and work hard and we just can’t keep doing this,” he said. “[Lowe] just told us the truth, things we have to work on. We’ll have spurts in the middle of the game but we just have to play like that the whole game.”

NC State cut the lead to seven at 38-31 with 17:50 left in the second half, but Virginia Tech promptly went on an 11 to one run to stretch the lead to 17. NC State never got any closer than 13 the rest of the way.

The lone bright spot for the Wolfpack as a team came on the glass, as NC State held a 45-37 edge and collected 27 offensive rebounds. And while did create second chance opportunities by hitting the glass, the Pack could only generate 12 second chance points.

“We didn’t convert as many as we needed to but it certainly says we were battling,” Lowe said. “That’s a very good ball club with arguably the best back court in our conference. It’s a very good team.”

Dorenzo Hudson and Malcolm Delaney led the way for the Hokies. Hudson scored 14 of his team-high 23 points in the second half and Delaney tallied 15, with 10 coming in the second 20 minutes.

Dennis Horner did much of the work on the glass for the Wolfpack, pulling down 16 rebounds (nine offensive) while also scoring 13 points. Josh Davis and Tracy Smith both scored 12. No other member of the Wolfpack broke into double figures. Farnold Degand, Javier Gonzalez and Scott Wood shot 2 of 19 combined in 70 minutes.

“They punched us in the mouth and we just sat there and looked at them while we were bleeding. It’s tough. We’re going to have to get this turned around somehow,” Wood said. “If you ask me I’ve played terrible. This is probably the worst season I’ve had in my life. I don’t know what’s gone wrong. Instead of shooting 500 shots a day I’m going to have to start shooting 1,000.”

Lowe, who was visibly frustrated following the game, said there is nothing to do but keep working.

“I don’t feel helpless. You go to work, that’s my job. The thing that’s frustrating is you can’t shoot the ball for them, and we shoot a lot in practice. You can’t get out there and do it for them,” he said. “You can’t make decisions for them. You try to put them in situations, you work on passing to the post and that’s all you can do. I don’t feel helpless because you just go back to work, there is another game coming.”

The Wolfpack hits the road again following tonight’s game and will take on Carolina in Chapel Hill Saturday. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.

I wonder if we could get Kellie Harper for next year?

  2. eas 02/10/2010 at 10:49 PM #

That type of performance should finally show that something must be done.

  3. Justin Gainey 02/10/2010 at 10:49 PM #

Well its official, we are the worst team in the ACC. Sid is over matched as a coach in the ACC. It is not even fair anymore. I hate this program from top to bottom. Excuse me, from bottom to further bottom.

    Hey, Sidney Lowe fans!

If you think THIS one tonight was Coyote Ugly, wait until Saturday night! WOO WOOOOO!!!

  5. eas 02/10/2010 at 10:51 PM #

Kellie isn’t that crazy. We are screwed for many more years.

Officially, I have given up. I don’t even care any more. Thank you Lee. Thank you Sidney. Go **** yourselves.

We’ve gone from playing 20 minutes of bad basketball, to 40 minutes. I mean… wow… barring us going on probation (knock on wood), this team is over achieving at disappointing us.

What an absolute shambles this basketball program has become. The players, coaches and AD should be ashamed of that positively woeful performance tonight. There is no excuse for it. None whatsoever. Can you say 2-14 and one and done in the ACC tourney?

Having gone to bed upset over the losses for the past month, I tried something different tonight. I did not watch the game, did not turn the television on, did not think about it. I worked on my taxes, did some web surfing, played with my kid. I had a pretty good evening. I am not upset and I can rest well. Everyone should follow my lead.

tuckerdorm–that is the funniest damn thing I’ve read in a long time. I needed that in the worst way. Thanks! GO CHICKENHAWKS. I’m still laughing.

oh by the way, GO HEELS!!! Is it really wrong to enjoy another’s misery? Especially if your own team gives you no joy, only heartache. A 20 point pounding. AGGH!!! I have a great deal of worry about next SATURDAY.

One of the most pathetic efforts I have seen from a State team in some time.

If I was on that team and had played as hard as I (and my teammates) did to comeback and almost beat GT…I would come out mad as hell wanting to beat the crap out of VT and not leave any doubt.

Instead they came out lazy, uninspired, no focus, no plan, just embarrassing. when Josh Davis is the only player on your team even trying to create his own shot you have a serious problem. The entire offense is pass it to Tracy and then see what happens. Every semi-competent coach in the league has figured out how to stop that. Just unoriginal, uninspired, pathetic.

There is just about zero objective evidence to suggest that Sidney will succeed even with talent so let’s just get this over with. Go out and get someone who is a proven winner at some level and see what happens.

  15. Wolfy__79 02/10/2010 at 11:12 PM #

i disagree. we have been coming out flat for a while now. with forturnate shooting to luck out our two wins. vt>gt! we helped vt more, but gt isn’t good. go chickenhawks!! that is funny

our basketball program is at rock bottom. sidney lowe must go. we are not talented, but there is no thought to the way we play basketball. nothing. i didn’t get amped up while viewing this game. at this point, i’m about as numb as a state fan can be. even if we had talent we would barely be competing and winning a few. sidney is not working out. IT SHOULD BE CLEAR TO ALL, NOW.

  16. Wolfy__79 02/10/2010 at 11:14 PM #

2-14 is very possible. oh how my expectations have dissolved. this team, this coach, this staff has no spine. no character. it all falls on sid!

  17. Wolfy__79 02/10/2010 at 11:18 PM #

lets get justin gainey to coach the rest of the season

  18. Justin Gainey 02/10/2010 at 11:20 PM #

    I’LL do it!!

  19. Pack Mentality 02/10/2010 at 11:22 PM #

The entire team is a total embarassment to the school, the ACC, and the game of basketball.

Sidney Lowe, I think you are an absolutely horrendous basketball coach and I have yet to find any attributes in you that I think will ever turn us into anything but an embarassment. I do not blame you for the situation though. You were made an incredible job offer that would be almost impossible to refuse. Of course you accepted that job as I or almost anyone else would. You have tried your best, but you do not have what I takes to ever be a head coach at any school.

Lee Fowler, I would like you to understand that you are the cause of all this. I believe you are the most inept AD in the nation. On top of being terrible at your job, you have publicly insulted your fan base on multiple occasions – all while arrogantly making a case for your great achievements. I take this personally because it is a direct insult thrown at me – who helps pay your salary. Lee, if I ever hear your voice again it will be too soon. You should pack your bags and move on to a better place before your job situation gets really ugly and carried out publicly. Your excuses ring hollow – this is your fault and your creation and the shambles of an athletic department will have to get someone else in to clean up your mess.

    i vote for gainey

Portrait of a season, via three (edited) posts by me this year:

Nov. 22, after winning the Glenn Wilkes Classic:
Spontaneous shows of team spirit have been glaringly missing for a few seasons now. This encourages me.

Jan. 7, two days after winning at Marquette:
I think claims of improvement are legitimate, thus far…team chemistry appears better…While the Pack has had inexplicably close wins…there have been no head-scratching blowout losses…team has had opportunity to win every…game…this squad is showing resilience – was it the AZ game where they overcame a six-point or so deficit over the closing 90 seconds or so? In seasons past they would have folded. And does anyone doubt that in past seasons, being down 11 to Marquette on the road at halftime would have resulted in a 20-point-plus loss? Or that the Florida loss would’ve begat a lengthy losing streak?…it portends good things for the future and finally…appears a building block or two may be in place.

    Jan. 27, after UNC loss
Pretty much exactly what I expected…Maryland game was the beginning of the end of the season…Duke game could have been the springboard to the now decades-awaited next step, and instead it will prove to be the season’s peak. I predict the Pack will win in very unspectacular and unattractive fashion Saturday vs. Central, and if lucky to get an opponent on an off night pick up at most two more wins on the season. State will be the 11 or 12 seed in the ACC tourney and put up a lifeless performance in exiting after one game. We’ll hear about how the players grew and are better prepared for next year, and we’ll hear about all the reasons we have to be optimistic based on some individual highlights cherry-picked from various games this season and yet another savior class coming in…not the results that bother me as much as the predictability…after two decades I know it is never going to get any better…It’s never going to change. Never. N-E-V-E-R.

    Sadly, LOL

  22. tuckerdorm1983 02/10/2010 at 11:25 PM #

I have worried we hired Matt Doherty. I still think he has another year.

  23. whope90 02/10/2010 at 11:32 PM #

2-14 is a reality@!!! road games at UNC, v tech and home games against maryland, miami bc and wake? maybe we can beat bc nope no way!!
and one and done in ac t2-15 team 14-18 overall.

I still think this team has some talented pieces: Wood howell, smith vberg and incoming freshmen, if they come now loll1 but El Sid should not have been hired and he now should be fired as all the major websites and sports blogs are listing him at, but ol Lee will give him one more year! and in 2011 we will be back here wondering how it is like to go from 5 straight ncaa bids to five years of this crap!

Our only hope is the new leader wilt fire the AD along with the Men’s basketball coach!!!

How many fans were at the game:150?

  24. Ed89 02/10/2010 at 11:32 PM #

Im so pissed, I can hardly type. im starting to agree with Noah. Any coach who hires Quentin jackson on his staff should have raised huge flags. Any guy who takes 23 years to get a college degree after having gone to college for four years should raise huge red flags. any coach who in his 4th year gets his ass handed to him after kicking same said ass 3 years earlier should raise flags. we had VT’s number in Sid’s first year, and now even VT and Greenburg are taking us behind the woodshed. Whether sid inherited a good situation or a bad situation, we are worse now than we were 3 years ago.

  25. mwcric 02/10/2010 at 11:34 PM #

tuckerdorm1983, are you kidding me? Doherty at least had one 26-win season and a preseason NIT championship in three years. Sid couldn’t carry Doherty’s jock.
