Lowe: ‘It’s going to be tough’

Sidney Lowe met with the media this morning. Here’s some of his thoughts on where NC State sits right now along with thoughts on Saturday’s match up with Carolina. Check back later for video from today’s press conference.

How are Richard Howell and Farnold Degand doing? Also, can you talk about the difference Howell and Degand make for the team when they’re in the line up?

It was just something sticking out. It was in that tunnel, the red thing. He’s good, he’s better. Farnold is feeling better, he’s had a couple days now under his belt. He seems to be coming along.

They bring different things. We’re different. Richard brings the physical play and he’s a good passer and then Farnold gives us that extra guy in the back court to maybe push the ball or get to the basket, create something for us. Last game, I’m not sure what team that was. But we definitely need to have everybody healthy.

Is this losing streak frustrating because of what you know this team can be?

It is because I’ve seen it and I know it’s there. We allow the offense to dictate our energy and how he play so if we’re not making shots then guys will get down and worry about their shots too much as opposed to getting back and playing defense. If we make shots then our energy is really good, but we need to get to the point where our defense ignites our offense. That happens with a lot of players and several teams. The good teams fight through that period where they arent scoring and they start talking to each other and getting stops. That’s one of our weakest areas is we’re not very vocal and verbal with each other in that way. We let our offense dictate our energy.

You wanted progress this year. Are you satisfied with the team right now?

With the effort, for the most part I am. That was one thing we set out to do, to come out and give a good effort. The effort part I’ve been pleased with. If we just shoot the ball just a little bit better things would be different. Just a little better and it would have been a different year so far. We have accomplished playing hard now we’ve got to put those other things together. I’d like to see us get a little more active defensively when we’re in our man-to-man defense and more active in our rotations. We’re still working on that. At times we get a little too concerned with our men and not getting off on the weak side. We still have to improve there. We knew it was going to be tough, this is a tough conference. I’m happy with the effort. I would hope we would be a little bit further but a lot of that is dictated by our offense and so I wish we would have been a little but further in that area. Offensively I thought we’d be a little bit better. I don’t think we’ve progressed from an offensive standpoint and that has dictated a lot with our team in other areas.

Could tomorrow’s game against Carolina be an opportunity to turn the year around? Obviously both teams records aren’t what they would want, but is this somewhat of an opportunity?

It could be. It could start something good, but it’s going to be tough. It’s a rivalry game, it doesn’t matter what the records are. Both teams are going through some similar things with youth and developing and trying to progress but it’s still NC State and Carolina. Certainly for us it’s a game that could maybe start something. Showing that you play through things and you get a big win like that. But we’re going to have to be very disciplined. Our defense will have to be solid. And then rebounding the basketball will be key. Transition defense is going to be key. We’ve got to get back and form a wall and protect that paint. We can’t go in there and be soft and allow them to be the aggressor. They are a very active physical team, they play hard. We have to play harder. We have to go in there and compete because if not it’s going to be a long day.

Talk about Josh Davis a little bit. Could you see him developing into a shut down defensive guy you could stick on two guards or point guards in the future? How much lift has he given you rebounding?

Absolutely. With his size and his quickness Josh can guard those guys. I’m sure we’ll have another situation where we put him on a point guard just to take something away, whatever it might be. It could happen tomorrow if those guards and penetrating and hurting us too much. He gives us that luxury defensively.

It’s not just the ones that he gets its the one that he makes an effort and drags another big out and one of our bigs get the rebound. He understands who he is. He knows his strengths and he plays to his strengths. He defends, he runs the floor and crashes the boards. Occasionally he’ll take a shot if it’s wide open, he knows he can take it. But he just knows who he is. That’s probably one of the biggest adjustments for players today. It’s a huge adjustment. Sometimes guys think they are three point shooters, but they don’t make many. Your not a three point shooter. Some guys think they can penetrate and draw and kick, but they turn it over three out of four times. Maybe that’s not what you do. He understands who he is and he plays to that.

What are the thoughts from the team when you watch film? What is the pulse of the team right now?

I think when they watched the film they were a little embarrassed. When you’re in the game they can’t see really what’s happening. It’s not until you show them the film and they walk out in disbelief. We went out on the floor and practice and had a great practice. But I think they were a little embarrassed. Unfortunately, sometimes you have a game or two like that during the course of a season where it’s not your team. What we did too is show them some clips of positive things we did. We showed them 10 clips of when we did things right and we scored 10 times. We’re trying to show them some of the positive things they are doing and trying to get back to those positive things.

I just want to hear Lowe pull a Dennis Green and say this in his post-game press conference:

“They are who we thought they were!”

“We let ’em off the hook!”

  2. choppack1 02/12/2010 at 11:01 PM #

packman 97 picked up on something that deserves being repeated:

“If we make shots then our energy is really good, but we need to get to the point where our defense ignites our offense.”

    …

“The effort part I’ve been pleased with. If we just shoot the ball just a little bit better things would be different. Just a little better and it would have been a different year so far.”

    Hmm…no mixed messages there.”

So, which one is it? Is our effort good this year or is it only good when we make shots? If it’s only good when we make shots, it’s not good.

  3. Wolfy__79 02/13/2010 at 1:34 AM #

i think for each particular question he is providing some pretty good answers from his point of view. i guess if bundle these questions together the message is mixed.

even with this interview being disected, i think it is really good to hear him speaking about the teams problems from his perspective. the team seems to be teetering on the edge right now. someone mentioned earlier this week that they thought the close losses/upsets this year are starting to take its toll…i could not agree more. how big a win would be for this team tommorrow. he knows everyone is disappointed right now, that seems pretty obvious in just reading this article, seeing him become more of an emotional and vocal coach.

one of the parts i liked most about this interview would be the final question. its evidence to me that he still hasn’t gotten through to them. perhaps there is a little more to it than the mess we see on the court. i’m not reading alot into what the nickels and dimes of his approach are, but he’s highlighting their mistakes and the few good parts. i’m not a detail guy, i generalize just about everything.. so i’m not bundling just parts of this, i’ll take as a whole thing with a grain of salt.

“It was in that tunnel, the red thing.”

    Attack of the red thing.

“I am always amused by the people that criticize a coach for not explicitly accepting blame for the team problems. What, so he can give people that want him to out even more ammunition?”

^I’ve never wanted SL to come out and say “I’m an incompotent boob”, but if you’re going to use the tact that he does in calling out specific players after *every* loss then at the very least he could say “We’ve *ALL* got to do a better job.” As in, “we’re ALL in this together”.

Either stop throwing the players under the bus, or share some of the burden / blame. If you’re gonna start the blame game, be ready for when it’s your turn … especially if you’re the person at the top of the food chain. Gripes are supposed to go up the chain, not down.

I don’t have a problem with calling out players for motivational purposes, but every loss? At some point the message is clear to both the players and the fans: “It’s not *my* fault, it’s everyone elses. I’m effing awesome. My underlings are not.” Even if you don’t feel that way, that’s the message you are generating. And it has a tremendous impact. Beyond that, it’s patently silly. You, after all, are the one responsible for said ineffective underlings.

Choose a new tact (such as, oh I don’t know – being professional and accountable) – or share some of the blame you love to dish out. In public. Through the media.

I have and am still a Lowe supporter. As some of the more rational and insightful posters have said…

Lowe will NOT be fired this year or next year.

    Next year will be pivotal….

Next years raw recruits will NOT make a NEW team….this BS about all the blue chippers coming in is a total waste of bandwidth.

Sidney needs to make some improvements THIS season and have a reasonably good season next year….

Whether Lowe stays for 2012 will depend a LOT on that. He is an Alumnus. He is part of the 1983 Magic. IF he is fired, it will be because of HIS own short comings….HOWEVER, our faithful, “I show up at least one game per season and glad hand eveybody….” AD should be held DOUBLY accountable.

Hope for a GOOD showing today. Maybe we are over our “illness”…

    GO PACK

it is only 203 days 8 hours 23 mins and 49 secs until football season starts, but hey who is counting???

  8. NJpack 02/13/2010 at 8:28 AM #

I just read the N&O article about “Fowler gives Lowe a vote of confidence.” The idea that we have shown progress this year is a joke. I especially liked the line that Lowe knew this year was going to be tough because we lost the top three scorers from last year. Wait a minute Lowe, what about “your guys?” What about Mays and CJ Williams with their high basketball IQs? What about you and your hungover assistant who should be able to develop a point guard?

Even after Lo Brown did not qualify, I still felt like we could surprise teams this season, maybe it was because I read all the Pack Insider (Wolfpack Hoops) articles that were all so positive. But now we are playing the same stand around halfcourt offense that we ran in years 2-3 of the Lowe experiment. The first year the guys actually played with some fundamentals, and you have to thank HS for that.

I wish I didn’t care and could just stop watching, but I will dutifully watch another loss today and dream of what could have been if we hired any of the Plan B candidates: John Belein, Greg Marshall, etc.

Go Pack (ho hum). Keep your booze on ice for 4:00 to dull the pain.

As far as throwing the kids under the bus their effort speaks for itself in the last few games. They all jumped under the bus. I also think Sid nailed it when he said they get down when the shots don’t fall and don’t get back on D. That being said, with each game Sid has more to prove in less time and the feat grows more difficult with each loss. I would like nothing more than for Sid to lead these rag tag kids to victory in the dome. GO PACK!!!

  10. rtpack24 02/13/2010 at 9:08 AM #

If you want to know what is wrong with our program we have a “goal” to play hard that should be a given every game! What is really telling is that our AD endorses this as a goal. When I read some of our coach’s and AD’s comments I can not believe what I am reading and wonder if anyone with authority is paying attention. Play hard and show improvement what a grand plan why even keep stats!

“I have (been) and am still a Lowe supporter. As some of the more rational and insightful posters have said… Lowe will NOT be fired this year or next year….Next year will be pivotal….”

Was this post made by Lee Fowler?

  12. EdMar 02/13/2010 at 9:20 AM #

If we hope to beat UNC once in the foreseeable future, we better do it today. They have Wear, Zeller and most importantly Davis out. We will not have another opportunity in at least the next three years.

You would think we can now attack the inside and the outside shooters would be more open.

Will we make any outside shots?

If we do not win today this “rivalry” will continue to deteriorate to the point of total irrelevancy.

  13. AveryPage 02/13/2010 at 9:38 AM #

How sid, can you be satisfied with losing? really?
State is falling into a hole they might not be able to get out of.

  14. WolftownVA81 02/13/2010 at 9:53 AM #

Guess even Fowler knows we are going to get our assess handed to us today so he felt obligated to make a pre-emptive strike and revive the WTNY mantra. I see no real improvement except more effort than last year but that aint saying much. It’ll be interesting to see what the talking heads have to say about this mess. They might have to touch on it because I don’t think this game will provide many opportunities for any real color commentary other than the joke that NCSU BB has become.

    LOWE HAS TO GO!!!!

I hope like hell we win today but it does not matter as far as Sid is concerned. This cancer of a coach has to go. He was a great part of the 83 miracle and he is part of wolfpack nation but the pain he is causing has to stop. There is an article in the News & Observer” where he yet again throws the team, his team, our team under the bus. “Worst-case scenario will now play out for N.C. State”. He roughly says that we were not willing to match VT’s physical tone. If this is true then he failed to properly prepare the kids for the game and the season. A real coach like Coach K is known for bringing in refs and letting the team bang extra hard in preparation for the NCAA’s. Coach K also recently revamped the entire offense because of the loss at Georgetown. CHANGE SOMETHING! He(Sid) is not even smart enough to know that this constant blaming of the shortcomings of the team reflect right back on him and this lame excuse for a staff. What in the heck did they do in the preseason if we are not ready to play now? Why is there no motion in our offense? How does VT score on their first 10 shots? You seen it. No Defense. If we do not come out ready to play it is on the coach. HE HAS LOST THIS TEAM! They do not believe in him or the system and what kills me is we are going to waste another year on this loser. How anyone can call themselves a state fan and defend this guy is beyond me. The least he could do is accept responsibility for this failure and back up the kids. F#@K him for not backing up our boys!! How much longer will the wolfpack nation tolerate this crap?

It is time for everyone to just finally admit that this guy is a complete bust and he without a doubt thru 4 full seasons absolutely sucks as a college coach. People we are DFL.

  17. HPWolf 02/13/2010 at 10:35 AM #

One other bit for you younger pups. This will come as a shock to some of you but NC State IS a basketball school, or we used to be. NC State has two national championships under its belt. The greatest player ever to play in college played at NC State. The most remarkable run to the NCAA Championship was done by NC State. I wont give you the details so that you may look this up on your own. Google it and read about NC State basketball. For us that know this history and lived it this is a truly embarassing time. Not to mention humbling time. But enough is enough. Bite the bullet and make the change.

  18. tuckerdorm1983 02/13/2010 at 10:42 AM #

There once was a point guard named Lowe
With the 1983 team he did make a great show
He did struggle as a coach
And was treated like a roach
But if he beats carolina at home today all is forgiven.

  19. BJD95 02/13/2010 at 10:56 AM #

If Lowe shat at midcourt during every remaining home game, Fowler would stand by Lowe. So, his “vote of confidence” means nothing. There’s no way Fowler would ever fire Lowe, under any circumstances. If Lowe is fired (or simply goes away), Fowler will depart beforehand or concurrently.

I like to focus on objective responsibility for bottom-line results. But if you are the type who insists on “subjective” reasoning, here you go. Sidney Lowe does not put in the required amount of work that a major D-1 head coach must. He doesn’t understand how to communicate with and motivate student athletes, as opposed to paid professionals. Like Chuck Amato, his ego far exceeds his intelligence and leadership ability. He also doesn’t know how to be a good program steward. When he leaves, the program will likely be in flames, whether it’s this spring, next year, or God help us, some other time in the future.

And Fowler…just wow. He can’t even make a straight-faced argument for improvement. So, he glosses over that and says that we play hard MOST OF THE TIME. So, he’s saying a B-minus grade for effort (and an F for improvement) is good enough for him. One out of two ain’t bad! But don’t worry, he’ll be back on the improvement bandwagon if we beat BC and/or Miami, because we will have closed regular season play slightly better than the immediately preceeding losing streak. Warp the logic enough, and you can call ANYTHING improvement.

Based on my conversations with other Pack fans that I respect, I relented a little bit from my bar of “NCAAT or bust” – but even then, I required an A+ for effort and at least a “solid NIT” performance. Neither prong has been met, and it’s not even close.

  20. Rochester 02/13/2010 at 11:02 AM #

^Nice try at poetry, but it’s not all forgiven if we win today. It will be much better than losing, of course, but it’s too little, too late. We’re going nowhere. All we can hope for now is to climb over UNC and get out of last place. (Incidentally, will they cancel the ACC-Big Ten Challenge next year if UNC finishes 12th and doesn’t make it?)

Nice post but in all fairness Lowe was given a fantastic job that based on his credentials he did not deserve. I would’nt say he is a roach but time is up. He has been given four years to show what he can do. He has not just struggled, he has totally flopped. He took over a program with 5 straight NCAA berths and has taken it to the land of the lost where we are not even good enough for the NIT. Let that sink in for a moment. Also, for all you fans who say they feel sorry for coach Sid or that he should be given another year. There is a bit of political correctness going on here. Please ask yourself this simple question. If Monte Towe were the head coach for the last four years with this win loss record in the ACC and no NCAA berths would he still have a job? Think about that for a moment as well.

We will win today if Woods or Javi gets hot and that is the only way.
Lowe must go either way, win or lose.

  22. 61Packer 02/13/2010 at 11:39 AM #

“There is a bit of political correctness going on here.”

AMEN, tuckerdorm1983. What happened to Maryland with Bob Wade can happen to us as well, so for those who think things can’t possibly get any worse, be assured that they can. ‘Nuff said.

We seem to be loyal to a fault – especially to a past hero. If Lowe was at any other school, would he still be coaching this year? Why does he continue to get a free pass? When he came on board the general opinion seemed to be it would take BB three years to recover and get to the NCAAT. With the loss of one recruiting class, that’s this year folks. I have to look at UVA as the most recent example for a performanced based evaluation and say, the answer would be no. What’s amazing is that they don’t have near the past success and tradition that we have. We’ve allowed ourselves to slide from the middle of conference to DFL, from boring to irrelavant. We need Donald Trump as an interim AD. Barring a win of the ACCT and deep run in the NCAAT (not likely) it’s time for NCSU and Sid to part ways.

  25. TOB4PREZ 02/13/2010 at 12:45 PM #

How does Lowe’s league record at this point in his career at State compare to our former coach’s after the same number of league games???
If I’m not mistaken, they’re damn near identical….. and the administration was willing to hang on to that coach after his FIFTH CONSECUTIVE losing season…. for a 6th season. Every self respecting Pack fan that I know and converse with fully expects Sid to be given at least his 5th.. particularly with the class assembled to come here. Him being fired and the next coach being tasked with replacing those recruits all but guarantees that it will be 2020 before we see the north side of .500. If Sid doesn’t finish with a winning league record next year and make the big dance, then he should, in all likelihood be shown the door… the one exception being a major rash of injuries.
It takes time for a coach that’s NEVER recruited high school kids in his life to build relationships with coaches and learn the ins and outs of recruiting. 2/3rds of Herb’s class ABANDONED the ship when the coaching search took so long, so Sid absolutely lost that year. This season’s freshmen are really the 1st class he’s been able to establish bonds with at an eary age for the kids, and next year’s class could wind up being the best class State’s had in 20 years. You might wanna risk setting the program back another half decade or so… but, I sure as hell don’t.
