Lowe: ‘It’s going to be tough’

Sidney Lowe met with the media this morning. Here’s some of his thoughts on where NC State sits right now along with thoughts on Saturday’s match up with Carolina. Check back later for video from today’s press conference.

How are Richard Howell and Farnold Degand doing? Also, can you talk about the difference Howell and Degand make for the team when they’re in the line up?

It was just something sticking out. It was in that tunnel, the red thing. He’s good, he’s better. Farnold is feeling better, he’s had a couple days now under his belt. He seems to be coming along.

They bring different things. We’re different. Richard brings the physical play and he’s a good passer and then Farnold gives us that extra guy in the back court to maybe push the ball or get to the basket, create something for us. Last game, I’m not sure what team that was. But we definitely need to have everybody healthy.

Is this losing streak frustrating because of what you know this team can be?

It is because I’ve seen it and I know it’s there. We allow the offense to dictate our energy and how he play so if we’re not making shots then guys will get down and worry about their shots too much as opposed to getting back and playing defense. If we make shots then our energy is really good, but we need to get to the point where our defense ignites our offense. That happens with a lot of players and several teams. The good teams fight through that period where they arent scoring and they start talking to each other and getting stops. That’s one of our weakest areas is we’re not very vocal and verbal with each other in that way. We let our offense dictate our energy.

You wanted progress this year. Are you satisfied with the team right now?

With the effort, for the most part I am. That was one thing we set out to do, to come out and give a good effort. The effort part I’ve been pleased with. If we just shoot the ball just a little bit better things would be different. Just a little better and it would have been a different year so far. We have accomplished playing hard now we’ve got to put those other things together. I’d like to see us get a little more active defensively when we’re in our man-to-man defense and more active in our rotations. We’re still working on that. At times we get a little too concerned with our men and not getting off on the weak side. We still have to improve there. We knew it was going to be tough, this is a tough conference. I’m happy with the effort. I would hope we would be a little bit further but a lot of that is dictated by our offense and so I wish we would have been a little but further in that area. Offensively I thought we’d be a little bit better. I don’t think we’ve progressed from an offensive standpoint and that has dictated a lot with our team in other areas.

Could tomorrow’s game against Carolina be an opportunity to turn the year around? Obviously both teams records aren’t what they would want, but is this somewhat of an opportunity?

It could be. It could start something good, but it’s going to be tough. It’s a rivalry game, it doesn’t matter what the records are. Both teams are going through some similar things with youth and developing and trying to progress but it’s still NC State and Carolina. Certainly for us it’s a game that could maybe start something. Showing that you play through things and you get a big win like that. But we’re going to have to be very disciplined. Our defense will have to be solid. And then rebounding the basketball will be key. Transition defense is going to be key. We’ve got to get back and form a wall and protect that paint. We can’t go in there and be soft and allow them to be the aggressor. They are a very active physical team, they play hard. We have to play harder. We have to go in there and compete because if not it’s going to be a long day.

Talk about Josh Davis a little bit. Could you see him developing into a shut down defensive guy you could stick on two guards or point guards in the future? How much lift has he given you rebounding?

Absolutely. With his size and his quickness Josh can guard those guys. I’m sure we’ll have another situation where we put him on a point guard just to take something away, whatever it might be. It could happen tomorrow if those guards and penetrating and hurting us too much. He gives us that luxury defensively.

It’s not just the ones that he gets its the one that he makes an effort and drags another big out and one of our bigs get the rebound. He understands who he is. He knows his strengths and he plays to his strengths. He defends, he runs the floor and crashes the boards. Occasionally he’ll take a shot if it’s wide open, he knows he can take it. But he just knows who he is. That’s probably one of the biggest adjustments for players today. It’s a huge adjustment. Sometimes guys think they are three point shooters, but they don’t make many. Your not a three point shooter. Some guys think they can penetrate and draw and kick, but they turn it over three out of four times. Maybe that’s not what you do. He understands who he is and he plays to that.

What are the thoughts from the team when you watch film? What is the pulse of the team right now?

I think when they watched the film they were a little embarrassed. When you’re in the game they can’t see really what’s happening. It’s not until you show them the film and they walk out in disbelief. We went out on the floor and practice and had a great practice. But I think they were a little embarrassed. Unfortunately, sometimes you have a game or two like that during the course of a season where it’s not your team. What we did too is show them some clips of positive things we did. We showed them 10 clips of when we did things right and we scored 10 times. We’re trying to show them some of the positive things they are doing and trying to get back to those positive things.

It reminds me of most criminal trials. All the public ever hears is, “not guilty”, “didn’t do it”, not responsible”.

Can’t imagine Sid would damn his own self. But, about the only good thing I see is hustle. Skills and performance wise, these guys are terrible. And part of that has to be coaching responsibility.

    We’re getting hustled.

I like this interview more than many others.

Interesting story about the guys seeing the tape and being embarrassed. I’d never thought that you might not realize how you look while you’re playing.

It’s interesting that he says David knows his role and that knowing your role might be the hardest part of adjusting to the college game. I wonder if he’s starting Davis to try to show the rest of the team how much he emphasizes that.

“If we make shots then our energy is really good, but we need to get to the point where our defense ignites our offense.”

“The effort part I’ve been pleased with. If we just shoot the ball just a little bit better things would be different. Just a little better and it would have been a different year so far.”

    Hmm…no mixed messages there.

hes talking in circles. sounds like a man with no answers. its all the players fault. i still havent heard him say that ” as coaches we have not done a very good job to instill in these young players that Defense ignites offense. that mentality starts at the top, and me and the other coaches are going to do better”… oh no, its an 18 year olds fault, not sids

“Both teams are going through some similar things with youth and developing and trying to progress…”
No we are not. Carolina is coming off their second National Championship in 5 years. They are really struggling and, quite unusual for them, not very good. We are having our normal year – at least recently – bottom third of the conference and watching other teams play in March. They have a ton of young talent, another top 10 recruiting class on the way, a coach that has been successful at this level at 2 different major schools, and a coach that has won 2 NC’s. We’ve got marginal talent, a good class coming in, a coach that has not been successful at any major program, and a coach that hasn’t even smelled the NCAA tourney.
We are really not that similar.

  6. Rick 02/12/2010 at 2:01 PM #

It sure sounds like Sid is frustrated.
I agree on the offense generating energy. The team needs to generate that themselves. Teams like Duke feed off of defense.

I am truly starting to feel bad for Lowe.

  7. Sweet jumper 02/12/2010 at 2:11 PM #

I also feel bad for Lowe. He loves State as much as the rest of us, and he knows how to control a game as a point guard. Unfortunately, he has been unable to relate that knowledge and experience to his players. Atsur was the exception, but he came here with good court awareness. Hopefully, Harrow and Brown will be on the same page with Lowe and kick start a return to the upper class. Go Pack.

  8. skippyjon jones 02/12/2010 at 2:12 PM #

I feel bad for Lowe too…but at my office when things “just don’t work out”, we make a change. It almost always works out for the best for both parties in the long run.

    Brutal, but so true whitefang.

  11. GAWolf 02/12/2010 at 3:37 PM #

Fowler is an idiot. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. He talks without saying anything.

    From Clarksa’s link:

Fowler, who hired Lowe in April 2006 after a lengthy search process, added that Lowe will be the Wolfpack’s coach next season.

“He’s our coach and he deserves a chance,” Fowler said. “He knows he has to turn it around and play at the top of the league.”

Lowe, who’s 65-57 overall and 17-41 in the ACC, has signed guards Ryan Harrow and Lorenzo Brown to join the program next fall. Forward C.J. Leslie, a Raleigh product who was named to the McDonald’s All-American team on Thursday, could also join the class.

  12. COLLEGEB413 02/12/2010 at 3:49 PM #

    I agree with whitefang.

We are probably the worst team that has won two national championships ever.

  13. ldr of the pk 75 02/12/2010 at 4:07 PM #

Cinncinatti won a couple of championships back in the early 60’s, faded away, and just came back into being in the last 10 years. How’d they do that? MANAGEMENT and COACHING!!!

On the other hand I remember teams named Loyola of Chicago, and Canisius, just to name two. They won national Championships in Basketball and have faded into oblivion. Perhaps they deemphasized sports after awhile, I don’t know, or perhaps they decided emphasize academics. The point is that most out here have probably never heard of those two schools. What is happening in Raleigh right now, can relegate us to the scrapheap of sports, ANY SPORT.

Unless you’re from the South and perhaps even the state of NC, NC State has already reached an irrelevant stage.

  14. DRW 02/12/2010 at 4:14 PM #

ldr: You can add the University of San Francisco to your list. Won two NCAA’s in the 50’s. Haven’t made tourney since 1998.

  15. MA Wolfpack 02/12/2010 at 5:13 PM #

I’m not a Fowler fan, but he needs to come out and support Lowe publicly. We are significantly short on talent this year and we are correcting that problem with next year’s recruiting class. CJL needs to know that Lowe is not going anywhere.

  16. BassPacker 02/12/2010 at 5:15 PM #

I like Lowe and Towe. I respect what they did as a player at NCSU. But the more I see this staff coach and the more I hear Lowe talk, the less respect I have. There has to be some accountability for someone other than the players. Sid seems to not get that, its always the players.

At the beginning of the interview, Mark Thomas ask Lowe if he can explain why the team was so flat early against VT, his answer was,

“They were ready but then you have the wheels come off because you prepare to start a certain 5. When that planned five can’t start, such has Howell got a cut coming thru the red tunnel and Tracy is sick, it throws the teams mentality off. You expect players (like Horner) who is thrust into the starting line up or rotation to step up …. and nobody does.”

Is this not saying that if the game plan in place does not work, be it because the starting 5 is interrupted, its the players responsibilty to adjust? I think this demostrates the lack of leadership and coaching the current staff has.

  17. PackMan97 02/12/2010 at 5:29 PM #

BassPacker – If the team is so emotionally fragile that they can’t adapt to an unexpected injury to a starter we have bigger problems than I thought.

Players should be CHOMPING at the bit to step up. I can see a player coming out TOO hard because they are unexpectedly starting and make some over eager mistakes….but to come out flat because you are unexpectedly starting…WTF?

  18. Wolfy__79 02/12/2010 at 5:59 PM #

i like what i hear here from sid. its been a long season, atleast he’s not quiting on the team. to a point, all the sid bashing is relevant. for this article, it is not. he’s gone a little more in depth with his “missing shots” explanation for those of you who are unable to read between the lines. it appears he has a very simple approach to the scenario. when you have so many close losses with a young team, yes they become FRAGILE. ease up on sidney lowe.

  19. BJD95 02/12/2010 at 7:37 PM #

His complete lack of self-awareness, responsibility, and humility is almost Amato-esque. Sad, really.

  20. CStanley 02/12/2010 at 7:55 PM #

Of all teams that have won multiple National Titles, only Cincinnati is probably comparable to us. San Fransisco is a joke. We are in one of the best conferences in the nation. There is no reason we should not have at least made a run back toward the top by now (a top 10 finish, a league title, Elite 8, Final Four, etc). Even Cincinnati had a nice run in the 90’s and early 2000’s, although they have had their struggles as of late. But I think we have many more distinct advantages over a school like Cincy.

The lack of success is getting ridiculous.

  21. NJpack 02/12/2010 at 8:03 PM #

If the players would just watch the re-play of the games with the TV analyst comments they would learn more lessons than from our coaching staff. My favorites from this year:

“NC State needs to move on offense, they are just standing around” (pretty much a ubiquitous comment regardless of the announcers).

“NC State needs to run Scott Wood off some screens to get him an open shot”

“Gonzalez needs to learn how to play under control”

My favorite written comment was from the N&O after the VT game –
“Josh Davis’ nickname should be ‘Bright Spot’, as in, the way the rest of the team has played since the Duke game, he has been the only bright spot on the team”

  22. JeremyH 02/12/2010 at 8:20 PM #

I am always amused by the people that criticize a coach for not explicitly accepting blame for the team problems. What, so he can give people that want him to out even more ammunition?

  23. whope90 02/12/2010 at 8:53 PM #

I know it is easy to dump on a coach in a bad situation, and have negative thoughts, statements and emotions, but when we all read the previous blog of 100 years of Wolfpack basketball, the facts presented(and very detailed)show
a individual(Sidney Lowe)whom obviously was over his head in becoming the coach of NC State.

We all know this, and what makes the situation worse is the AD’s vote of confidence.

Why would his boss do this? I can only see this is a save face for the AD himself. If our football coach can fill a defensive job with-in a day with Tendada(whom was a steal) what does this say about the AD?

And the idea that better players coming in and that hopes will turn around is nuts! There is no guarantee that Ryan H and L Brown play for NC State.

First, CJ Leslie was a verbal and then decommitted(and smart move by him)and L Brown did not qualify academically, whom to say Ryan H will?

Plus, are any of these players that much better than JJ Hickson whom was a 1st round draft pick of the Caveliers?

Remember the talent he did have: Fells, Ben M and B Costner and Gavin Grant and JJ Hickson. At one time early in the 2007-2008 season,State was ranked in the top 25 and then lost to New Orleans and then ECU????

Yes, i know, they were not that talented, but weren’t they? Costner was almost MVP of the 2007 ACC T if not for a physical breakdown of the team in the Championship game. Fells, did he not display NBA athletic ability?

Grant,? he was a slasher and scorer and emotional leader with Ben M making great passes and then JJ Hickson, whom if it wasn’t for Kyle S at Duke, would have been ACC rookie of the year?

Yes,Yes, I know, these players displayed at times ability and are not in the NBA(except Hickson),but the nine game losing streak? Your kidding right? he should have been fired then!

Why was Costner moved to the wing? He was a power forward. Ben M minutes were taken away but why did coach lowe just play fells, grant, costner big ben and hickson? Yes, there is no true point guard, but have we had one since?

And last year, coach Lowe did some strange things like having fells at the small forward when he really was a two? and kept costner on the outside and a three headed monster at point?

This year, Coach lowe had Degand at the two when Javi G is the better shooting guard and Horner at power/small forward over howell?

I still feel that Woods,Howell, Smith and Vberg and Javi and Degand are good players, but the familiar theme is that Lowe does not develop chemistry, a rotation or a system or any cohesion or a scheme to win etc. Personally, i think he is coaching via a interm NBA coach the way he yells and jerks players in and out of the line up and this has been a staple of his coaching legacy at state.

And for the AD and Lowe to make comments like, “I like the effort our guys give and what they are showing?” WHAT? Did lowe or fowler see the Vtech game? Or the Maryland game? Or the home UNC game and tommorrow’s game?

Four years is a lot of time to establish oneself as a coach or leader in any profession or sport. Even in the past, progress must be seen and there has not been any!! None at all, not one shred of a solid coaching job despite the excuse of talent!!

This from a program that had been to Five straight NCAA Tournaments, great facilities and a passionate fanbase, tons of funds(MONEY) and a great conference. The bar has been set, and Lowe has not come close to it. Thsu, he must be let go at season’s end!

Hopefully, the AD’s comments are really a kiss of death to the coach!
I hope to goodness sake that statement is true!!!!!

  24. Primewolf 02/12/2010 at 9:01 PM #

Leadershipless is a terrible thing. I would say we are in the bottom 5 percentile of coaching competent. What I don’t get is either: (1) how clueless our assistants are in helping right the ship, or (2)how smart they are and Sid won’t listen to them. Which one is it? Must be the former.

  25. whope90 02/12/2010 at 9:09 PM #

Even with Ed Davis out six weeks, we still lose sat by +14 due to coaching:
“We did not make shots and they did, and we were not ready to play”
Who bets he will not say that!!!!!
    LOLL
