‘Ballin is a Habit’ needs to make ‘Accuracy a Habit’

Dear random blogger, fan, &/or media member — How about doing yourself and your credibility a service and have some clue of reality and fact before deciding to implicitly or explicitly draw a conclusion on a topic. Wouldn’t actually KNOWING THE TRUTH be some kind of predetermining factor for drawing a conclusion? Naaaaah. That would be way too much work.

Ballin is a Habit_Herb

Oh my friggin God! Will someone please sound the alarms of sanity?

Of course, no one can blame “Ballin is a Habit” for coming to the conclusion that Herb Sendek only coached at NC State for five years when every single ‘mainstream’ media member couldn’t help but conveniently omit the parenthetical in the following quote that you have heard until your ears bleed:

“Herb Sendek went to five straight NCAA Tournaments” (after missing five straight NCAA Tournaments and being given an historically unprecedented 6th year of opportunity to finally make the Tournament).

…or…how about…

“Herb Sendek went to five straight NCAA Tournaments” (while leveraging horrible out of conference scheduling and safely clearing the bubble only a single time)

You ready for something that really throws the HSSSers for a loop (‘Herb Sendek Sunshine Squad)? Especially those that can’t quite do math or analyze data? —-

Sidney Lowe has not made an NCAA Tournament in his first four years of coaching at NC State (and will need to win the ACC Tournament this season to advance); the great Herb Sendek did not advance to the NCAA Tournament until his SIXTH season at NC State.

^That, of course, means that even if Sidney Lowe misses the NCAA Tournament AGAIN next season, that he will still be on par with the exact same performance that the great Herb Sendek delivered.

Ouch! Slap of reality to the lemmings that only repeat what they think they hear on television.

Of course, some people will argue that Sendek put together a better first 4 years with NIT berths and records than Sidney. I will not argue that. But, these same people can’t have it both ways — because they are the same people who live and die by this consistent proclamation that State fans were crazy not to appreciate Herb for making the NCAA Tournament five times in TEN YEARS. If simply making the NCAA Tournament is the bellweather by which you love and choose to judge, then I don’t accept that anything short of making the Tournament matters one hill of beans.

This hearkens me back to some great old school FACTS that we used to pull together to help paint the real truth behind the lazy truth extolled by the media.

So, how ‘powerful’ were those ‘five straight NCAA Tournaments’ where NC State entered the last week of the regular season needing key wins simply to clear the proverbial NCAA bubble?

Well – after Sendek’s 5th straight NCAA Tournament appearance – NC State was one of only 15 schools that had been invited to the NCAA Tournament in five consecutive seasons. Pretty neat! Of those 15 schools:

  • NC State was the ONLY school that failed to advance to at least one Final Eight or won a single conference championship.
  • NC State ranked 14th out of 15 in average seed (at least we are better than Southern Illinois!!!)
  • NC State’s “best seed” ranked better than only three programs – one of which had made multiple Final Fours and won a recent National Title (Michigan State), and one of which knocked us out of the NCAA Tournament in our ‘4th consecutive year’.
  • NC State’s “worst seed” was better than only one program – Southern Illinois.

Unfortunately, our detailed data tables that were included in the work were lost in data migrations to new servers. Regardless, you should do yourself a favor and click on this to go back in time.

This appears to be our destiny now …

Punching bag for everybody. C’mon! Join in on the fun! IT’S EASY!

(It’s especially easy when our esteemed school and athletics “leaders” not only don’t care, they go out of their way to agree.)

My table on 5 straight NCAAT appearances was a little different than Jeff’s, but it is still visible here:

Fortunately, Sid’s contract will be up after 5 so we never have to find out if he needs 6. Great call out, StateFans. They’ve already edited their posting:

“(*When first posted, we omitted the word “last” which, admittedly, completely changes the lede. State Fans Nation really took us to task. Those damn BIAH copy editors… Someone got fired today.)”

I’m not feeling enough appreciation in this post.

    Class of 2009:
I said this to a friend of mine just today but it seems fitting to your comment that Sid’s contract will be up after 5 “so we never have to find out if he needs 6”. (And I apologize if this statements reignites the ongoing debate about what Sid can accomplish with next year’s recruits.)
If Sid wins two more ACC games next year than he does this year and Jed is still AD, I guarantee F-Up gives Sid a 5 year contract extension. So we can see how year 6 AND 10 look. And I’m guessing it ain’t good.

I thought Sidney Lowe had four more years on his contract(given extension after first or second year?)

At least Herb’s team played defense, maybe they could not score and it was ugly but they played defense, i mean that was Herb’s forte and scheduling weak teams and mild expectations that only occured in 2001-2002 season,
and Larry Hunter’s help with the Princeton offense, in which i see his Western Carolina team won at Louisville?

Why hasn’t Larry Hunter’s name come up as a candidate at State?
He woudl be cheap and he can coach?(ohio/western carolina) and he knows
the area and enviroment,in fact, you could say he coached the team offensively in 2001-2002?

But a real beating tonight and we really do not need to go to the Herb well, he might ahve been a nice mild manner guy, but he was a mid-major coaching hire at a acc school and ran to another mid-major(arizona state/no b-ball history)with job security and could not hack it here whether is was the pressure, fans or lack of championships(acc title 2003??)

And yes, the five year thing is full of holes as you have said:
    constant bubble team,
    scheduled weak teams,
never was on a roll going in the ncaa’s
    and only one sweet sixteen
but i seem to think herb packed it in like Dave Odom style in the ncaas:
first time 2002:lost second round to Uconn in close one whom eventually would play maryland,
2003-first round lost on last second shot(Cal)
2004-second round lost to vandy with sweet sixteen game would be uconn,
(whom won it all that year)
2005-sweet sixteen game wisconsin which we lead at half only to falter and if won would have played unc in elite eight(whom won ncaas)
2006- second round loss to Texas after close win over cal and was close in first half but faltered in second while playing his athletic team players.

Herb Sendek was our Dave Odom, we had good players but never a Tim Duncan type, if we had, i think the acc titles and tourney championships would have come. What happend to Dave Odom when Duncan left?? Down Down Down to SC and NIT hell(back to back NIT titles loll)

I just hope that sense will come back to our atheltic dept and we hire a major college EXPERIENCED COACH, and we will be there next year!!
All we need is a coach, we have facilities, fan support, money and some solid players and incoming freshmen class and the right coach/hire can
    bring some energy.

    MY KINGDOM FOR A COACH!!!

But who knows,at 2-9 14-12 overall, with five games left and one acc tourney game we could go 7-9 or 6-10 and 18-13 going into acc t with some wins and a hopefull acc t a magically ncaa run to the elite eight????

That is what UNC fans think will happen to their team?
Ours, we can only hope and dream cant we????
“if i had a million dollars,i be rich!!”

  8. CStanley 02/17/2010 at 9:55 PM #

That 5 year run by Herb was highly overrated.

2002 was a nice run, was happy just to get back.

2003 was extraordinarily disappointing after a great run in the ACCT. We had basically got in based on our ACCT performance.

2004…EPIC MELTDOWN, should have been a Sweet 16 team at worst.

2005 we finally break through, should have made Elite 8. But again, we had to sweat through the final week or so to get in as a 10 seed.

2006 highly disappointing finish to the season left us with a piss poor seed and we had been done being a competitive team for about 3 weeks.

All in all, only the 2005 team which had a mediocre season produced anything overly exciting. Honestly, Herb’s first trip with State was the only other trip to write home about.

“Why hasn’t Larry Hunter’s name come up as a candidate at State?”

Because that would imply that we have a coaching vacancy that needs filling.

This is purely anecdotal, but the past two times (the BIAH post included) I’ve heard Lowe compared to Sendek, there was no mention of the fans running him off. True the BIAH post did mention an unhappy fan base, but that’s not quite the same I don’t think. The first time was during the UNC game when the Sendek situation was also portrayed inaccurately as him being fired despite going to 5 straight NCAA tourneys. In both situations, the vote of confidence for Lowe was mentioned. In my opinion, these types of mentions put the emphasis (and a bit of heat?) on the admin rather than the typical fan blame game, especially the inaccurate report of Sendek being fired and then comparing it to Lowe’s current lack of success and the vote of confidence. Especially in the first instance, the emphasis was clearly on Lee Fowler and how he’s handled a coach with “success” versus a coach without it. Sendek’s legendary feat of 5 straight NCAA tourney appearances is ingrained in the minds of the media. Perhaps we’ll see it turn for our good and more in the media will question the leadership of Lee Fowler if this ship continues to sink and wonder why Lowe gets such a long leash. I would love to see things turn around and Lowe coach a championship team. But if that doesn’t happen, I’d love to see the media question the athletic department’s leadership.

Sendek finished T-3rd, 4th, 2nd, T-6th, and 4th in the ACC those years(not necessarily in that order. That alone, except for the 6th place finish, will get to you the dance.

  12. PackerInRussia 02/18/2010 at 10:26 PM #

It seems like all but one of those years (2nd place finish) they entered the ACCT on the bubble and needed at least one or two wins to get in.

  13. sautz 02/19/2010 at 9:06 AM #

Oh yeah, I’m just saying I’m sure the ACC standings were a huge plus. I don’t have the time to go back and look but I doubt many teams who finished in the top 3rd of the conference missed the NCAAs. I believe VT missed it one year with a 9-7 mark…
