ACC UPDATE

.
.
The ACC teams are about half-way through the conference season so it seems like a good time to update where the teams are with respect to making the NCAAT. Note that none of the “numbers” presented in this entry include the effect of Sunday’s game…but the outcome of UNC at UMD won’t have any big effect on our conclusions.

ACC BB Update 2-7

We have looked at the NCAAT bubble many times over the five years that I have been writing here. Based on those observations, I use really simple criteria for placing teams in the three categories:

IN = RPI <40 and a minimum of 0.500 in the ACC
OUT = RPI >65
BUBBLE = Anything in-between those two extremes

OBSERVATIONS:

– I have never encountered a team with a record like UVa’s this year. Their bad RPI ranking is a function of a weak OOC schedule and a relatively poor performance against that schedule. They still have time to dig their way out of their hole, but make no doubt that they are definitely in a hole.

– This is probably the last time that I will include the opponents that make up Top 50 wins for the ACC schools. But I found two things interesting while I was compiling the list:
a) It is really easy to pick out the three teams that are clearly in the NCAAT solely from the number of Top 50 wins.
b) It is impossible to look at only Top 50 wins to separate the bubble teams from those that are clearly out of the running for the NCAAT.

– It’s unusual for five ACC teams to be so clearly off of the pace required to make the NCAAT at the half-way point of the conference schedule. (Half of the conference teams were OUT before a 2-0 week by VT.)

– Most people feel that UMD, Clemson, and FSU are well on their way to the NCAAT. While I don’t necessarily disagree, none of these teams have cemented their position as well as the Top-3.

BIG MOVERS

UVA (176->90), UMD (94->46), and GT (69->24) have all used their ACC schedule to make the biggest moves in RPI ranking since our previous look just before the conference schedule really got started.

Duke, UNC, and NCSU are the only ACC teams with worse RPI rankings today than our previous look. Duke has dropped one spot in the ranking while UNC and NCSU have taken bad rankings and made them worse.

CONFERENCE STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

We have looked at conference strength of schedule at the end of the year each of the last four years. For some reason, Barry Jacobs and the ACC Sports Journal jumped on this subject a little prematurely (and rather haphazardly) and we had a good discussion on this article in the forums.

So just for kicks and giggles, I prepared a table summarizing conference strength of schedule as calculated by CBS Sports. I haven’t found an explanation for their numbers, but they are still useful for a quick look today. (After the season, we always do a subjective evaluation to make sure that the numbers make sense.)

ACC BB SOS 2-7

EXPLANATION

CBS Sports calculates the raw number and displays it on their RPI BREAKDOWN page for each team. (They also provide a national ranking for this raw number.) I then normalize the RAW number to make it easier to tell how much variation there is between one team and the next.

The last two columns are my quick and subjective evaluation of the two halves of the season for each team. The harder half of the conference season was easy to identify for most teams but WF seems like a toss up to me.

THOUGHTS

I wouldn’t recommend making too much over the second half of State’s schedule being easier than the first half. At present, State is a woeful 1-5 against teams ranked from 51-100. In the ACC, even if your schedule gets easier, it doesn’t mean that you will get a lot of teams ranked over 100.

Based on a quick, subjective review of the schedules, I would guess that GT will end up with the hardest conference schedule. They play Duke, WF, Clemson, FSU, and UNC twice.

VT will probably end up with the easiest schedule since they play Duke, Clemson, GT, WF, FSU, and UMD once each. At present, VT is 1-2 against the RPI Top 50 and only has four more games against teams in the Top-50. This easy schedule means that VT doesn’t have many chances to get those note-worthy wins required to make the NCAAT.

CONCLUSIONS

It’s way too early for hard and fast conclusions, but the top three teams are pretty solid and the next three are in reasonably good shape to make the NCAAT.

UVA has to be the surprise of the season so far. You just don’t expect a team with three losses to OOC teams ranked 100+ to turn around and go 5-3 in the first half of the conference schedule.

UNC is probably the other surprise in the conference; but I just can’t seem to take any solace from that fact.

Between the main blog and the forums, there must be at least a dozen different places for people to complain about State’s basketball program. Please note that this entry is not one of those places.

Clemson is (once again) trending the wrong way. They may be through the more difficult half of their ACC schedule, but unless they show a little more consistency in the ‘W’ column they could look back on that home loss to middling Illinois as a key NIT clincher.

Up by 20+ points at home to a middle-of-the road Illinois and lose won’t do you any favors at selection time. Bad, bad loss.

No team in the ACC is impressive this year. None. So of course expect two teams in the Final Four 🙂

yeah, the clemson trend continues. if teams just watch film, unc-ch will lose more than they win. they are not good. of course the unc/duke game this week will be close so they may steal one there. i don’t see them making the tourney. right now, i think md is the best team in the acc and may very well run away with it.. atleast for the regular season. duke will be hanging around with a very similar record if md slips up, but md should handle duke head to head. fsu and clemson, have alot of work to do. i think both can make it in, but only with a good reg season finish and a couple of wins in the tourney. georgia tech, after watching that game saturday. they have major issues just thinking on the floor. they may squeak into tourney contention. whether they make it or not, they won’t last long. my team to watch is va tech. probably one of the more consistent “playing” teams in the conf. to me. i think they are still unbeaten at home, thats a unorthodox’d stat i look at. uva? to make it, i think they have to win 4-5 more and win two games in the tourney.

well while i enjoyed that article, immediatley after finishing it.. the first thing to come to mind was that should also be said about our current status. atleast unc-ch gets the benefit of being blasted by their media alumni, while we get cheap shots that end up encouraging us to do more of the same. that’s sad isn’t it?!! an article that blueprints their problems but also highlights our problems as well.. the only benefit being we weren’t named in the same light!!!

“choppack- Tompack is right on the money as far as standings go”

He’s not. HWSBN finished ahead of UNC in ACC standings 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Now, we are w/in shouting distance of them this year. However, it would be a lot more enjoyable if we were taking advantage of the worst UNC teams since 2002 and 2003 like we did those years.

As it stands right now, it’s the only good thing about this basketball season for a State fan.

I read it too but clearly we have had those same problems for the past few years. The difference is that they have a future ,we don’t with the present people in charge.

I am confused over this issue? Schedule? You play whom you have and do your best and try to win and make no excuses. State due to the Big Four history will always play UNC and Wake twice but why duke only once i can’t under stand and played uva twice? Must be the fine acc commish from UNC swofford!!!

It is a down year for the ACC and if some teams don’t get their act together(UNC Clemson, Floirda State and Miami) we could only have a few teams in the NCAA’s(Duke, Maryland, Virgina, Gtech).

Being a down year, how bad would the pack’s record be if this team played
    last year?

Obviously, Bennett of Virgina is taking advantage of the down year and his schedule for his NCAA bid for UVA.(Wish we had a coach like that! maybe next year?)
Someone call the Cornell coach whose team is currently ranked 20th in the country at 20-3!
Cornell in the NCAA”S and not state and unc?
    WOW!

Besides, next year is the year for this conference,Duke UNC and State will have good recruiting classes plus wake! And with the returning players, hopefully we will have a good new young experienced coach whom can turn our fotunes around! If not, look for a subdivision finish and out of the NIT and then a coach search! Could anyone in the country imagine a lineup of Ryan h, s wood, t smith richard howell and l brown and not making the ncaa’s or nit? If El Sid is the coach, that will happen.
Has anyone heard what Jay Bias has said about the NC State coaching situation?

lets just grin and bare the rest of the season. then we’ll worry about next year, next year.

i honestly don’t think unc has a chance at making the tournament, ntm the nit. they would have to be close to tourney material to get into the “not in tournament” tournament. if i were them, i would decline a bid to the nit, they will get hammered and not win anyway. georgia tech looks like prime nit material. their lack of mental presence doesn’t belong in the ncaa’s. i think va tech steals someone’s spot and gets in this year…
