The Sidney Lowe Rebound

As a 2004 NC State graduate, there wasn’t really much to write home about when it came to sports. A few years of Philip, a Gator Bowl win, and a few really disappointing ACC Tournament Championship games… I moved to the midwest after college and was in a small bar watching Julius Hodge take on Connecticut all by himself. I was the only one who gave a damn, but I gave a damn worth twenty men. Only to see that same team pull a HWSNBN and lay a complete goose egg vs. an over matched Badger team.

The NC State Basketball coaching search was horribly executed and I could spend all day writing about this, but it’s been done a billion times. Fact is we landed Sid and I was none too happy about it. Then that magical run in the 2007 ACC Tournament. We manhandled the same Carolina team earlier that year and got beat handily at the Dean Dome. The game was close. We lost by a few (on an unnecessary Ty Lawson dunk) but I was downing some Kool Aid. Wolfpack Nation was. For the first time as a young Pack fan, I thought I may be a part of something special. Was it the jacket? Was Sid better than advertised? Maybe a little bit of both…

The abysmal 2008 and 2009 seasons had a lot of us scratching our head. The red jacket looked a little less shiny and Sid looked outmatched in almost every way. Add to that some team chemistry that is best described by mixing some oil and water and expecting magic to happen. Sid seemed lost. His heart may have been in the game, but his players’ hearts were elsewhere.

There was a lot of grumbling coming into the 09-10 season and with just reason. Tobacco Road is a tough place to win, but if you can’t, there’s a mid major job for you. Some wanted to give Sid at least next year to save some recruits and see what he could do with an ACC caliber point guard. Others said he didn’t deserve the chance and you never want to retain a coach for recruits and that that wasn’t a way to build long term success.

Simply put, I think we’re better than our record. We lost a few very close games to decent teams on miracle shots (yeah yeah, we got ours too, but that was in 1983). And it happened again tonight. On a shot that has about a 0.01% chance of going in, Nolan Smith knocks down a last second three to close out the 1st half and never even touched the ground. Of course. It’s automatic. Put on a non-red jersey and throw up some junk. It’ll go in. Minus a few of these, I think we have a very manageable record and a decent shot at the Dance.

It looks like Javi, Mays, and Degand have all matured. No, they’ve not been perfect, but the Javi/Degand combo seems to be working out. Tracy is playing beyond his years and holy crap Scott Wood? It’s been a while since I’ve seen a player drain shots like that… and the last time I did, we were up by 20 against Reddick and Duke… only to see that lead evaporate.

In years prior, NC State played conserva-ball. Get a gigantic lead and squander it. What I have seen this year is NC State mount some mighty comebacks and other times maintain a mighty lead. Tonights win against #7 Duke was a fantastically orchestrated 40-minute punishment of Duke. For this, you give the players the props and give the coaches the credit where credit is due.

This team and Sid’s teams of years past are night-and-day. Chemistry problems of yore? Gone. It does look ever more evident that the locker room in 07-08 and 08-09 was poisonous. Now coaches take blame for that. But we also must credit when it’s corrected.

So this rant all ends with faith in Lowe and hopes that the rally cap stays on. Sid bleeds NC State. I want him to succeed. I want to win. I want to hang a banner despite administration happily sitting back in the black and maintaining mediocrity. Now I may be completely wrong about this and I’ve been wrong before. But I want to win so badly that I have become delusional with blind hope. But not only does Sid get next year to save some recruits, but I think he deserves next year. There’s something to be said for being down and out and getting up and charging forward. Here’s to Sidney Lowe.

While our shooting percentage was pretty good last night, the percentage is not why we won – it’s what created that percentage. We were very efficient and took extremely good shots for the most part; it was not like we were tossing up 15 – 25 footers all night and draining them. Our outstanding guard play (when’s the last time that description was used with regard to the Pack?)created a lot of point-blank shots and that is why the percentage was high.

We will probably not get that many easy inside opportunities against some of the bigger teams, but if our guards can keep penetrating and passing like last night; who knows… This is not like a HWSNBN win where we shot 60% from three point land; what we did last night is something that is reasonably sustainable.

Sidney showed how efficient his offensive schemes can be during is first year with Astur; I think what we saw last night is going to be a more and more common theme as this team grows up.

Great win, let’s keep the ball rolling!

    AGREED.

I’ve read the article, which is very good and expresses alot of my feelings, but have read no replies so as not to influence my response:

First, SL was still not the right hire for BB HC at NCSU – and I still hold that against Foulup in addition to the three-ring circus he created in his so-called coaching search. But I, too, have hoped, given his NCSU petigree, that SL would succeed. I’ve not commented concerning his D1 coaching abilities, although the last 3+ years did not give me any reason to think that he would succeed. But if what I saw last night is indicative, I now think that SL may well get the job done. True, it’s only one game. But what I think I saw was a team with talent (not necessarily matching Duke top to bottom), a motivated team, a team that is truely a “team,” and some in-game coaching and adjustments with which I find little to criticize, not that I’m the most expert in basketball anyway. But I do now have hope that SL can succeed at NCSU. And I am comfortable with him for at least 2010-2011. So I’ll just let Dr. Woodson deal with Foulup, and, hopefully, everything else, basketball and otherwise, will take care of itself with NCSU athletics.

Overall great game and win for The Pack! Why can’t you guys just accept the game for what it is and enjoy the win and try not to over analyze every minute detail. They finally played mostly a complete game from buzzer to buzzer. No matter who was on the court they seemed to maintain a fairly high intensity level throughout the game, and hit most free throws (but still a problem). Hopefully, they will remember this game and continue to play like this more often.

Hmm… I don’t want to rain on the cheer parade. Last night’s win was a good one for NC State, but we need to back that up with a win in at least one of our next two games. Beat Duke and then lose to MD and UNC? Well…. it looks more like we had a good night. Beat Duke and follow that up with at least one more good win? Now we’re onto something.

I’ve pulled hard for Lowe since day one. I’ve always thought he was a good game manager and X’s and O’s coach. Unlike many on here, I’ve felt that he could take a random group of players and beat most coaches in the ACC (given a similarly equal random group of players) in a single game.

The glaring gap that I’ve seen is consistency, motivation and program building. I’d love for us to continue to make strides in this area.

wolfpup76 I agree totally with your sentiments. I had lost all hope with Lowe after the UVA loss. I’m still not totally on the wagon just yet b/c I need to see that he can motivate his players beyond UNC and Duke. I think everyone is in agreement here that we need a strong showing against UMD and UNC to prove that this wasn’t a fluke win.

BTW, a really good read from a Duke blog (don’t know if it’s been posted elsewehre):

WolftownVa81,If you fell for Sendek than that was your own fault. Because Robinson & Sendek had no business ever coaching at State from the beginning. Plus after 10 yr of Sendek mid major talent Lowe had a mess to clean up. But all that Lowe has ever ask from us fan is to be patient with his rebuilding process. Because when all the pieces come together it will be for the long haul.

The Maryland game has all the makings of a trap game. We just had the best game of the season and knocked off a highly-ranked Duke team. The game that follows Maryland is Carolina, so we could be looking ahead to that one.

Hopefully, the guys know that losing to Maryland would almost nullify the Duke win. Maryland is good, but we can beat that team if we play the way we’ve been playing the last three games (excluding the first half of the Clemson game).

  8. NJpack 01/21/2010 at 6:35 PM #

Sid deserves to coach through next year. We haven’t won any kind of title since 1987, what is one more year? With ACC-caliber guards next year his coaching will look much better. I posted before that Degand is a poor man’s Lo Brown, next year we have the real thing plus a top-rated PG.

After last night the only constructive comment I have is keep CJ Williams on the bench, let the Degand / Javi / Mays trio absorb his minutes. Great to see Horner showing some heart last night. Now I hope we can beat the hell out of Grievus and MD.

  9. bradleyb123 01/21/2010 at 6:54 PM #

Sid deserves to coach through next year. We haven’t won any kind of title since 1987, what is one more year?

I’ve been saying that, but there’s plenty more reason to keep Sid besides the “what is one more year?” angle. Excluding the first half of the Clemson game, we’ve been playing solid basketball for several games now. And THIS year is not over yet. I still think we could swing an NCAA Tournament bid with just a little good fortune. But we have to keep playing well.

We can probably stop worrying about Sid getting next year. I believe that’s a lock now. We’d have to have an epic collapse over the next 12 games for Sid to not get next year.

On another tangent, CJ Leslie was in attendance last night. I heard people were chanting, “CJ LES-LIE! CJ LES-LIE!” And I noticed him behind the bench at the Clemson game, too. If there’s no interest there, he sure is showing up a lot! If we can get him back, and Cothron, too, I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about it!

  10. D_Medlin 01/21/2010 at 7:07 PM #

I wouldn’t bet on Cothron and Leslie together. I’ve heard that if State gets one of them the other will leave. That’s supposedly one of the reasons Cothron didn’t sign in the early signing period. He is waiting to see what CJ will do.

  11. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 01/21/2010 at 8:15 PM #

Sid’s first 3 years were filled with problems. Almost no depth and a mix of the last coach’s players and the new guys with no experience. A coach moving from the NBA to lead a college program. A coach that had to take over a program that had been trashed in the press for ‘firing’ a ‘respected’ leader who was the best NC State could ever hope for. We shouldn’t forget that Sid also had to deal with some very difficult family problems that I’m sure would be a distraction for anyone much less a new head coach in the devil’s triangle of college basketball.

Sid put together an experienced team of coaches, has recruited better than anyone since Valvano, and is showing real progress in building the program under very difficult circumstances.

These guys have played the last 3 halves of basketball as good as any team in the ACC. The team shows signs maturing and bonding and I think all State fans can agree on one thing- We all wish Sid and our team the best for the rest of the season.

D_Medlin, that’s a shame if true about CJL and LC. We definitely need both and have plenty of playing time available for both. I’ve posted time and time again that we really need CJL, but exchanging him for LC hurts. It sounds like we would get more years out of LC than CJL based on NBA potential.

What do you think? Who would stay longer at NCSU?

  13. hball57 01/21/2010 at 11:44 PM #

I am always fascinated that the obviously intelligent people that post on this blog don’t get why the carryover players did not do well with Lowe. It is in his interviews. Sidney talks directly with his players and challenges them directly. He can talk about players in public because he has said the same things to them in private. Our previous coach shielded his players from criticism directly and he recruited players who responded to that style.

When Lowe came, he had a choice. He could coach his style, his way to the players that he had or he could establish his style and recruit players who would respond to him. He chose the later and it is now starting to pay off.

One more thing; many are waiting for the team to regress. If you are, I contend that you are not paying attention. While this team is not perfect, they have been responding all year. They fix their issues. They work hard. Listen to them after a game. No self pity. No hanging their heads. They take responsibility and move forward.

No I don’t mean they won’t have laspes in performance. I’m not saying they won’t lose. But they will play with consistent effort and determination. Miss some shots and you might not get e win. But that won’t mean that this team is taking a step back.

  14. Bowlpack 01/22/2010 at 2:08 AM #

Clearly the sentiment seems split between those that are waiting for Sid to coach is way out of NC State and those with renewed faith or optimism based on the team’s play this season. I tend to side with the optimists and remain hopeful that Sid is beginning to become the same type of leader as a coach that he was as a player. He’s finally gained control of his team and the evidence appears obvious to me. This team, while inconsistent, has shown tremendous heart and they are starting to feed off of each other. I don’t want to be too quick to say that we’ve turned the corner, but a new chemistry exists among these guys. Just look at how quickly Wood and Howell are evolving as they look to the upperclassmen for leadership. Hell, even Vandenburg who I assumed would be the prototypical project is playing some quality minutes. The hesitation and timidness that seemed to exist the last couple of years is fading away and I think that much of it has to do with the head coach.

On a side note, notice how much better we play in a rowdy, packed RBC Center? I’ve been to a few games this year where you could hear crickets chirping. Put your butts in the seats and let ’em know you believe (unless you don’t in which case you should stay home and curse the TV when things aren’t going are way).

  15. Rochester 01/22/2010 at 7:55 AM #

If it really comes down to Cothron vs CJ Leslie I would take Leslie even if he’s here just one year for two reasons. 1. It would be a huge boost to get him back after we had him and lost him. 2. Next year we will finally be in a spot where a one-year guy can make a difference. If we finish this year reasonably well we’ll be set up to make a run next year at a really meaningful season. Leslie is more ready to help with that run. As for needing both of them, that might be nice, but we do have some front-court depth, especially if Painter develops into a useful player. And if we rekindle the flame here, recruiting a couple of highly ranked bigs each year won’t be that difficult.

As for Sid, in addition to the other reasons mentioned above (chemistry, Herb’s recruits, no PG), I think he just wasn’t ready to be a college coach. It’s not his fault Fowlup hired him. But he wasn’t really prepared for the role. I think he might be now, however, and that’s one reason he’s doing a better job.

  16. Wolf74 01/22/2010 at 7:56 AM #

    My take:
Lowe was not ready to be a head basketball coach at a major D1 school when he was hired. I have never blamed him for that. That is pure and simple a fault of Lee Fowler. I also blame Fowler for the circus atmosphere that surrounded the search and for his numerous verbal attacks at fans. He plain and simply has no place at NCSU.

With that said, it is time to start judging Lowe as a head basketball coach. He now has the experience to show if he can handle a team: if he can consistantly recruit talent, handle the egos, prepare the team, hire assistants, handle the fans, handle the parents, and coach during the game. One game does not make a season, just as the Northwestern game did not make the season, but it is nice to see that NCSU does have the ability to rise to a challenge. Our coach has many more hurdles to overcome. He has to recruit top flight players to fill holes in the current lineup. He has to recruit to replace players that are or may leave. He has to keep the team from getting too “high” over a big win but avoid stepping on their confidence at the same time. He has to help market the program. Plus, at some point, he has to win some championships. He may or may not be able to do those things. I certainly hope so but one thing for sure, it is now time to start rating his performance.

As Winston Churchill once said: This in not the end, this is not the beginning of the end, but it is the end of the beginning.

  17. SouthernWolf 01/22/2010 at 10:22 AM #

I am not completely sold that we need Luke Cothran whether or not We get CJL, Cothran seems to me to be almost exactly the same type of player as Richard Howell.

CJL on the other hand brings a dominating defense presence to the low paint that can challenge/alter shots and shut down athletic bigs like Ed Davis. A line up with 1:Javi/Harrow 2: Brown/Mays 3:Wood/Davis 4:Smith/Howell 5:CJL/Vandenburg is a very balanced, dangerous defensive and offensive team.

  18. philliepacker 01/22/2010 at 10:43 AM #

Sid is the man and bout time all knew this. Look at the job he has done in just a few years, truely amazing. Word out there is that he has used his “contacts” and Tracy is gonna be a lottery pick this year!

  19. theghost 01/22/2010 at 11:08 AM #

has anybody followed Cothron closely? Seems like I read somewhere his attitude may be more in the Costner mold than the Tracy Smith mold – but you can never really tell sometimes, half the recruiting criticisms you hear are “we don’t need him anyway” sour grapes from fans of rejected schools.

  20. happypackdad 01/22/2010 at 1:18 PM #

    “5:CJL/Vandenburg”

CJL isn’t a center. Smith/Painter/Vanderburg will play the 5 spot.

  21. PoppaJohn 01/22/2010 at 2:05 PM #

The best post so far? “NC State is like crack” Ain’t it the truth?

Philliepacker – I was really, REALLY enjoying reading the posts until I got to yours. I’m hoping Tracy stays another year. He’s NCAA good, but he’s only 6’8″ and there are a bunch of those guys riding the pine in the NBA. The power forwards are bigger, stronger and just as fast if not faster. And the centers will reject anything he throws toward the basket. He’s not ready, and I don’t think he’ll ever be a star in the NBA. I’m sure he’ll get a job, but will he start?

I got awesome seats for the Virginia game, just behind the bench and got a great chance to watch Sidney work. (unfortunately I wanted to kill myself after the game) The man is in every second of the game. He was fired up and coaching his butt off. I really got a feeling of confidence watching him. We lost, mostly because of free throws and I hated them for it. But I really think Sid has learned and gotten his arms around coaching in the NCAA. Sid is living and dying right along with us with every success and every stupid mistake.

The coaching search was a joke, but somehow I think we may have ended up with a good coach who will be with us long enough to become (hopefully) a great coach. And when/if that happens – I don’t think anyone will lure him away.

As to what will happen this season, who can freakin’ tell? We lost AT HOME to VA, supposedly the worst team in the league, and then beat #7 Duke who may be the best team in the league. Like many of the posters, I’m encouraged at our potential but we can’t be considered ‘good’ until we can put it together on a regular basis. It’s hard to believe we’ve turned that corner yet. But the potential to beat anyone is the league is very exciting. (the potential to LOSE to anyone in the league is much less so)

  22. bradleyb123 01/22/2010 at 6:58 PM #

hball57, your last post was spot on RIGHT! Well said, my man!

I’ve been debating here and on other blogs that I think Herb’s leftovers were our best AND worst players at the same time. They were the best in the sense that they were the most experienced and talented, so we kinda HAD to play them. But they were the worst in the sense that they were selfish, and on their own page. Our current players have stated this fact in no uncertain terms. You could almost think of them as Sid saboteurs. The more I think about it, the more I am able to forgive Sid’s first three years. Because of them, sure. But also because of something another poster wrote: Sid was not ready to be a D-1 college coach when we hired him. That’s not his fault. I believe Sid is SO MUCH BETTER now than when he arrived.

I want to see what THIS team will do. This year, next year, and more. The more I watch this team, the more I like them. They are all unselfish and play with heart and chemistry. And Sid is doing a better job coaching this year. I can’t think of a thing he should have done differently in the last 2-3 games.

Like you said, we’ll probably suffer lapses of execution. We’re not going to win all of our remaining games. But overall, this team is improving with every game. We already have a better record against ranked teams (2-1) than we did last year (1-6).

If we lose to Maryland, it will really hurt. I still believe we have something to lose now. It’s no longer “just be happy with the wins we get”. I think we may just be one of the better teams in the conference now.

  23. bradleyb123 01/22/2010 at 6:59 PM #

Sid has finally gained control of his team.

Funny how the timing of this even just happens to coincide with the last of Herb’s players leaving the program. 😉

I have heard that we actually have a shot at BOTH Luke and CJ. CJ wants to play with a stud PG so he looks good, then he’s 1 and done. Wall is out at KU and CJ has chemistry with Harrow. Luke is not 1 and done and his other options are probably not as attractive long term as NCSU unless someone else enters the picture.(first time I’ve ever thought this by the way). Still, my gut says CJ goes to KU. Cal raises kids for 1 and done.

  25. bradleyb123 01/22/2010 at 7:24 PM #

CJ sure has been in attendance at some recent NC State games. I saw him with my own eyes at the Clemson game. The camera was on Sid and the bench, and there was CJ Leslie, plain as day, sitting not far behind the State bench. He was also officially reported to have been in attendance at the Duke game, along with Harrow and a couple of other recruits or commitments.

I’m not suggesting we’re any kind of lock for CJ. I really think he’s taking his good, sweet time and truly weighing his options and possibilities. But I believe State is very much in the mix for him.

Unless he just digs the free tickets to big ACC games. 😉
