Sammy Batten: ‘You have to give the edge to NC State’

As football recruiting for 2010 comes down the home stretch and National Signing Day (Feb. 3) approaches, schools in North Carolina and elsewhere are scrambling to try and wrap up commitments from those recruits still trying to make decisions.

Sammy Batten, from the ACC Sports Journal, broke down recruiting in the state Wednesday and declared NC State the ‘winner’ overall.

Batten also looked at how well both schools from North Carolina and schools from the ACC performed in-state. According to Scout.com, 17 of the Top 30 recruits in the state have committed to in-state schools. 20 of those 30 will end up in the ACC.

Here’s a list of current NC commitments.

N.C. State (19)

Thomas Teal DT 6-2/330 3/3 Bennettsville (SC) Marlboro County
Logan Winkles FB 6-0/240 3/2 Thomaston (GA) Upson Lee

After breaking down top players like Robert Crisp and David Amerson, both committed to NC State, Batten discussed just how well teams did in the annual scramble to get commitments.

By landing four of the top 11 prospects and the state’s top quarterback, you have to give the edge to N.C. State. Offensive tackle Robert Crisp, safety David Amerson and wide receiver Anthony Creecy will make an immediate impact for the Wolfpack next fall, while defensive lineman Fre’Shad Hunter has the potential to excel if he can get back on track after being suspended for most of his final high school season. Quarterback Tyler Brosius was a real bonus pickup for N.C. State after first committing to Virginia.

North Carolina only snared one top 10 prospect in offensive tackle, T.J. Leifheit, but the Tar Heels also picked up some big-time athletes in safety P.J. Clyburn, linebackers Ty Linton and Darius Lipford, defensive end Kareem Martin and wide receiver Reggie Wilkins. Wilkins defected from N.C. State just a week before signing day.

Perhaps the biggest surprise among the ACC teams working the state was Duke. The Blue Devils have nine in-state players committed, one of its biggest hauls from North Carolina. Traditionally, the school hasn’t mined much of its roster from the state, but that has changed dramatically under David Cutcliffe.

i don’t have any news, i too PRAY for his recovery for his sake.. not that of NCSU. hope i didn’t give that impression.

by this time, there should be an adequate replacement for him, if TOB is worth half his salt… there should be a much better defense on the field this season. our lb’s and secondary looked slow b/c they were slow, the scheme should make up for that if its the right one. i don’t expect any coaching changes if they haven’t already happened.

well, despite what we get to see on the court to this pt in the season, basketball is on the up and up. just look at lozo and harrow youtube clips on here, ….. harrow, lozo, wood, howell, tracy. or harrow, lozo, wood, cothron, tracy. or harrow, lozo, cothron, howell, tracy. all of these work for me. this is a very competitive lineup. can’t wait to see what sid can do with that!

Call me out of touch, I don’t know. Give TOB the recruits he has gotten and watch to see what he develops, then watch the recruits Sid gets and watch what he develops. I’m way more comfortable with what TOB has done or will do.

Then again, neither has set the world on fire or even come close to resurrecting the floundering programs they inherited. I won’t hold my breath on either of them, at this point.

Given what I’ve seen the last few years. Holding your breath may be the best way to end the pain.

Like 75, I’m alot more confident in TOB’s ability to get the most out of his talent. he has a track record of doing it.

That said, if he doesn’t post a winning record this year, I’m afraid the house of cards comes crashing down – and we can forget about football success in the near or medium term.

“Like 75, I’m alot more confident in TOB’s ability to get the most out of his talent. he has a track record of doing it.”

I’ll buy that, but that won’t exactly translate to a better season for football than it will for basketball. I think TOB has the ability to take a 3 star recruit and get the most out of him in a fairly quick time frame. But talent on the basketball court doesn’t have to be coached up as much, and it’s impact is much greater. Sid doesn’t have to coach up Lo Brown as much as TOB has to coach up Amerson. In basketball if you have the horses…you can have success. Look at Paul Hewitt.

Hell, I could coach John Wall. “Yeah John, run fast, jump high, jump over that guy…yeah, keep doing that!”

  7. Pack05 01/28/2010 at 2:07 PM #

As overheard at Rupp Arena in the heat of battle:

    Calipari: John!!!!

    J Wall: Yes Coach

    Calipari: Keep ballin’ son

    J Wall: Word Coach

^ they can barely get a thousand people there… jesus christ. You probably will be hard pressed to make out any of the action with all the glare off the aluminum. Why the hell would they televise that shit

  10. Pack05 01/28/2010 at 2:58 PM #

They can’t even get a thousand people there. Why in the world would they televise that crap … the glare off the aluminum will be blinding.

Our special teams and defense should be vastly improved or it’s on TOB. He made no changes in the off season and in the past he has said that we are a production based operation. I guess that does not apply to his coaches.

  12. Wolfy__79 01/28/2010 at 3:11 PM #

packfan03, that’s the best thing i’ve heard in a while! we don’t have to worry about them being overrated again, they already are. with even higher expectations! it can’t play out any better for us, IMHO! they may have a superior recruiter, but we have a decent recruiter and a much better coach. all we lack is a stud running back on offense and we’re set. the o line should continue to improve, the defense can’t be any worse than last year.. and RW will likely return but if not, glennon will take a few OOC knocks and be ready for conference play… bring it on!

  13. primacyone 01/28/2010 at 3:12 PM #

I don’t see it even to be a possibility we could be much better this coming year than last year. We are going in the wrong direction in football. Really, this is the worst we have ever been, ever and next year will probably be worse. Really. “Compete for a divsion title . . ” How is that possible? We are going to be worse this coming year than last year.

How you can even perceive to give TOB any credit at all at this point, I don’t know. Worst coaching job over the last three years we have ever had. EVER. Really. EVER.

I’m sick of all the TOB recognizes talent . . . gets the most out of his talent . . . chit….. Where? When? Not here? Been the complete polar opposite of that here. Been such an opposite direction that it has been THE WORST WE HAVE EVER HAD.

  14. Thompson44 01/28/2010 at 3:12 PM #

If our Football team can stay healthy this year and that is a huge IF TOB will finally be able to show what we have here. Whether RW is back or not I do think that a healthy team makes a huge difference and TOB has not had a healthy team since he stepped on campus.

  15. wolfie91 01/28/2010 at 3:15 PM #

Glad someone mentioned Irving. Hurt very much not to have him last year.

  16. Pack05 01/28/2010 at 3:21 PM #

“If our Football team can stay healthy this year and that is a huge IF TOB will finally be able to show what we have here.”

It is a huge IF.. Irving, Byrd and Mattes just to name a few off the top of my head may not be ready for the start of the season. We all hope they are but Byrd and Mattes had their severe injuries at the end of the season. That’s 3 starters right there. It will be difficult.

Bend over Butch! The N & O and ESPN want to kiss your ass!

UNX is going to be on ESPN for the blue and white game-wait your fricking kidding me- A unx fan at my church said they could sit any where in the stadium when he went this past blue and white game.
THAT’S UNBELIEVABLE- SOMEBOBY KNOW OR B%*%S SOMEBODY at ESPN FROM UNX.

  19. 08alum 01/29/2010 at 12:33 AM #

I went to last blue and white game. It was GARBAGE!!!! We spent 15 minutes watching them stretch. Then 15 minutes of small offensive drills. By the time the actual “game” started, I was desperate for some real football. Too bad the rest of the “game” consisted of the offense just running plays until they got to the endzone, then rinse and repeat. No downs. No meaningful special teams. I’d be surprised if even 1,000 people showed.

    Two reasons for this:
    1. Publicity for the UNC : LSU game that ESPN airs to start the season.
    2. ESPN’s UNC bias (ratings)

I wouldn’t even mind it that much, except that the most exciting part of UNC’s team (explosive and quick defense) is limited in this glorified flag football exhibition.

  20. Wolfy__79 01/29/2010 at 12:49 AM #

i applaud unc-ch getting hyped again and i have no pity for them playing lsu. year in/out, lsu is not a good matchup for alot of ACC schools. but what i don’t get is all the unx bias out there, it’s been ages since mack brown was there.. since then, have they even won any of the bowl games they’ve been to? i don’t really care, there is no comparison b/t the two schools. i don’t even know what motivates the athletes’ to go there. their facilities are way outdated.. or atleast that football stadium. i’m pretty sure i’ll make the trip again to see the WOLFPACK dominate the powder puffs.

  21. Wolfy__79 01/29/2010 at 12:52 AM #

again i expect a completely revamped and healthy NCSU football squad this year. by now, TOB should have it all lined up… and he thought coaching in Raleigh was easy.. i’d say it’s one of the toughest jobs in the conference, IMHO. but really, he should have it all together this year or pack his bags.. however that shouldn’t be the case. i don’t know how we’ll fair in OOC, probably .500 at worst, but we should be pretty strong in conference play.

  22. PackerInRussia 01/29/2010 at 8:50 AM #

At least UNC will not be able to claim 10,000 people in attendance when the actual amount is closer to 1/10 of that unless 1) ESPN works with them to hide the fact 2) a lot of people show up simply b/c it’s on ESPN 3) everyone who has been on scholarship at some point in the past 4 years shows up

  23. rtpack24 01/29/2010 at 9:17 AM #

We would probably have a shot at our spring game being televised but that would require a SID that actually did their job vs. sitting around waiting on the phone to ring or releasing information that should not be released.

  24. NCMike 02/02/2010 at 2:28 PM #

Don’t know what Sammy would say now, but rivals and scout think the Pack has been passed in the past week or so by Butch…. just have to wait and see.
