North Carolina 77, NC State 63

Ethan Hyman/N&O

Other than that Mrs. Lincoln…

In a game that was there for the taking, NC State couldn’t get it done tonight against the Heels, letting a five-point lead slip away during an eight-minute scoring drought in the second half. The Wolfpack missed 12 straight shots during Carolina’s run.

On the night NC State shot 39 percent from the field and 31 percent from behind the arc. Carolina, conversely, shot 51 percent overall and 46 percent from three point range.  The Tar Heels dominated the Wolfpack on the glass, out rebounding NC State 35-28 in what is becoming an alarming tend for State lately.

If there’s a formula to lose a game, that’s it.

Deon Thompson, Larry Drew II and Ed Davis  (who certainly looked better than ‘very questionable’) led the Tar Heels. Thompson notched 21 points with Drew and Davis scoring 18 and 12, respectively. Davis and Thompson also played relatively good defense on Tracy Smith for most of the night.

Tracy Smith scored a hard-earned 20 points and pulled down six boards despite going against two and sometimes three defenders much of the night. Javi Gonzalez tallied 19, but much of it came in a five-minute stretch at the end of the first half and beginning of the second half.

Here’s the complete box score. Try to ignore Scott Wood’s…umm…below average performance. And Dennis Horner’s. And Richard Howell’s. And Julius Mays’. You get the point.

Here’s the N&O’s take.

Come March, North Carolina might look back on Tuesday’s 77-63 win over N.C. State and pinpoint exactly when its season was saved.

A three-game ACC losing streak was in danger of turning into four when the Tar Heels found new life and their way back into the win column.

Deon Thompson’s dunk at 10:04 left the lone returning starter from last year’s national title team pounding his chest and sent the Heels on their way to a seventh straight win over the Wolfpack.

There isn’t a whole lot more to say really. If NC State doesn’t go cold in the second half, it would have been in the ball game late. Carolina certainly didn’t play great and left the door open for the Wolfpack to make a run. That run just never happened.

” We had great effort and better teamwork than UNC for most of this game. Our effort and teamwork (and UNC’s sloppiness) kept us in this one even though we were outclassed in shooting and rebounding”

    Are you serious?
There was no effort in the second half. We did not play defense or even bother boxing out. We did run around like a babbling retard but that is not the same thing as effort.

“HWSNBN players” – Fells, Costner and McCauley

You know. The guys everyone blamed and said once they were gone we would see effort and wins.

When the scoreboard broke at 43 for State and the score went from up 5 to down 8, I turned the channel. I checked back during commercials and saw that they eventually got the scoreboard working for State again, but the differential wasn’t improving, so I went back to watching White Collar.

I suggest that everyone have a plan B before sitting down to watch a State game.

Twitter is blocked at work. Does Folwer have any good thoughts this morning?

“I suggest that everyone have a plan B before sitting down to watch a State game.”

    That made me chuckle.

Reading through all the tweets from the game time last night is pretty entertaining…his bits on the “clef hangers” are classic! Especially the one where he complains that they left “balloons” in the toilet after the game.

^ VaWolf82, here are a couple of his insights.

“call it a hunch, but i think i feel a couple of sick days coming on. it’s only prudent to play it safe during cold and flu season.”

“some folks say the glass is half empty. some say it’s half full. i say it makes no difference as long as you have a nice glass.”

I almost hate to post…I was so disgusted. Their size killed us. Is there a reason Vandy can’t play the 5 and Smith the 4 at the same time??? They barely gave Big V a shot and he did a helluva lot better on D inside than some.

My 1 smart-A comment, I started hoping Carolina would start making their freethrows. It was embarasing to see them back to back get their missed freethrows and put them in for 2.

@Lee_Folwer, whoever he is, deserves a medal. Guy was up at 5am yesterday (unc gameday) tweeting about blueberry muffins and his admin’s plump pooper.
    Just outstanding, hilarious, stuff.

I agree with those that correctly have pointed out the fact that we have not solved the “weak side/off man” double down. The offense starts to bog down when we miss a few outside shots then confidence wanes and desperation starts to set in. Then defense starts to suffer from the long rebounds leading to bad positioning (looking lost) and just flat out getting beat down the court… besides Degand we have no burners.

It truly does seem that if Horner / Wood are having a tough night shooting we are in deep trouble…(spacing gets bad / penetration becomes high risk / shot selection goes down the tubes) our last 4 losses have that in common.

    CJ Williams….can anyone say “transfer”?

Guys, we shot a low percentage last night because UNC defended the shit out of us in the second half. Bad shots usually result in low percentages.

On the flip side, I don’t recall UNC taking one single bad shot in the second half. They were patient, waited for the defense to break down (when we bothered to play it at all – otherwise, they just took it right to the rim for easy scores). There was nothing random or luck-based about it. One team played much harder and much smarter than the other down the stretch, and the final score fairly reflected that.

In a way, this reminds me of the Les Robinson teams I suffered through as a student. When they were insanely hot from 3, they could beat anyone, too. If not, there was no “Plan B” against anyone half-decent.

I simply cannot believe that there is praise on this board for Javi. Sure, he made some points. I would make some points if I threw it up at the basket every time I got it. Or, I could hold it at the top of the halfcourt and wait for the nothing I create to happen.

Man, 6 of 11 is good, and I’ll take it. But not at the cost of any semblance of a functioning offense. I’d rather have Mays in there creating steady plays than have some guy throwing up circus shots every possession.

On a side note, be careful of what you wish for – such as a new mens basketball coach – because you might get what you want, HIRED BY LEE FOWLER. Then where would we be? Most likely the laughing stock of the entire nation – again!

The effort was nothing to write home about. UNC’s effort was a lot stronger, especially on defense. When you get outworked, at home, to your biggest rival, forget it.

V-burg I think can help us, but only in very short spurts the way Duke uses Zoubek. He just can’t keep up for more than a few minutes of real live game action. But I do love his fight.

The Maryland and UNC games are textbook illustrations for how teams can beat us. Expect it to be replicated until we can figure out a different way to win.

    dingdingding! We have a winner.

VAWolf82 – LOL, I thought I was the only one that does that. It’s too awful to watch when you know they are going in the tank, so you find something distracting on the other channel (last night, ‘Ghost Rider’) and toggle back & forth.

  20. BJD95 01/27/2010 at 9:55 AM #

I don’t think Lee Fowler’s going to be hiring anybody. But I also thought we needed a new AD in place by January to lay the groundwork for a successful coaching search. So that ship has likely sailed, damn it. We’re stuck with “Clyde Drexler II” through 2010-11.

If you could implant Mays’ basketball IQ into Javi, or Javi’s decisiveness/instincts into Mays, you might end up with a league average point guard. Instead, we got what we got. Slop.

“We had great effort and better teamwork than UNC for most of this game. Our effort and teamwork (and UNC’s sloppiness) kept us in this one even though we were outclassed in shooting and rebounding”

I’m sorry, but that doesn’t jive with what I saw. When they pick up the rebound on their own missed free throws, multiple times, that’s lack of effort.

Regarding breaking the zone. I’m not a basketball guru by any means. But, doesn’t there need to be at least one guy in the paint or moving towards the paint. We just pass around the perimeter, lob a bad 3, and give them the easy rebound since nobody is close to the basket.

About 10 minutes into the game, right after the first substitution, did anybody else notice that it looked like the entire team was lost on offense for about 15 seconds? It looked like Mays (was he in then?) was begging somebody to move so he could start the offense.

But I also thought we needed a new AD in place by January to lay the groundwork for a successful coaching search.

I was never convinced that condition “A” would lead to condition “B”. The lobbying for 2010/2011 started back during the caravan speeches last summer. The ground work was being laid to prepare folks for a “worst-case” year and to provide assurances that the “Les-era” was not being duplicated.

I have no idea if the proper folks (ie the same ones that grew tired of Amato) bought this dog/pony show or not. But either way, whoever was sitting in the AD’s office wasn’t going to change those minds.

“I simply cannot believe that there is praise on this board for Javi.”

Uh…because he SCORES??? I believe Farnold and Tracy have a better connection but other than that he gets everyone the shots they want. He delivers on the pick and pop, he hits Scooter coming off screens, he keeps the ball away from CJ Williams (because he doesn’t want a shot)…and when all that doesn’t work he takes it upon himself to get us a bucket. Outside of Tracy we don’t have another person with a scoring mentality. I would really hate to see us without Javi’s buckets.

It’s probably not going to happen this year but I hope Scooter works on the other parts of his scoring game. If he could use a pump fake to get closer to the rim or get fouled he could be a great scorer. Then he could see the ball go through the net and maybe go back to the 3 point line later. Right now with him only being a 3 point threat he falls into quick sand. He misses a few in a row, but he only alternative is to keep chucking. The “keep missing til you hit, keep hitting til you miss” isn’t going to be consistent.

  24. Daily Update 01/27/2010 at 10:13 AM #

This team is very similar to the Les Robinson era. Les’ teams and this year’s team have about the same amount of talent. However, Les had one of the best players in the ACC during his time. I would take Todd Fuller over Tracy Smith any day of the week. Last night was pretty much what I expected. I hoped we could win, but realistically didn’t think it was going to happen.

^ I prefer Curtis Marshall to Javi, though. 🙂
