NC State welcomes Virginia for ACC home opener

I know this is only the second game of the conference schedule for the Wolfpack and the first contest in the RBC Center, but Saturday’s game against the Cavaliers is a must-win. I hate to put that sort of pressure on the second ACC game, but it’s the truth. For the Wolfpack to have any shot at postseason play, whether it be in the NCAAT, NIT or elsewhere, it is going to have to win the games at home that it should. Saturday’s game meets those qualifications, probably as much or more than any other home conference game the entire year.

Virginia comes to town sporting a new coach and an improved lineup over last season, IMO.

Sylven Landesberg, who is averaging more than 16 points per game so far, is the clear leader on offense for Virginia. In the only matchup between the two teams last season Landesberg made his presence known, scoring 16 points, grabbing eight boards and dishing out six assists. The Wolfpack will need to keep Landesberg out of the lane where he can create shots for both himself and his teammates, most notably big man Mike Scott. The 6’8″ junior is averaging nearly 14 points a game and is shooting nearly 60% from the field. For a more comprehensive look at Virginia from a statistical outlook, check out Backing the Pack.

Now, about this whole must-win thing. The reason this game is so important is not necessarily because of wins and losses or what kind of a whole a loss would put NC State in the ACC standings. It’s important from a confidence standpoint. There has been a lot of back and forth on the forums lately about relative measures of improvement. Confidence is certainly one of those. I realize that for some all that matters is wins and losses. If NC State isn’t competing for the ACC year in year out, it doesn’t matter how confident the team is or how hard it plays. I tend to fall on the other side of the argument.

A win against the Hoos Saturday, especially if it’s done in convincing fashion (a win of more than 10 points), would be a big boost heading into a brutal stretch of games during the next three weeks. Before State’s meeting with Bull City rival NCCU Jan. 31, the Wolfpack will face four ranked teams and Maryland on the road, which is never pleasant.

Another thing to watch Saturday will be the play of Javi Gonzalez. He didn’t have his best night against Holy Cross and it showed by the amount of minutes Julius Mays and Farnold Degand got. Being the Julius Mays hater that I am (when he’s playing PG), I hope Javi can get squared away and continue the solid play he’s shown through much of the season. If Mays can keep shooting well and play some at the two and Farnold and Javi keep pushing the tempo and limiting turnovers, the backcourt could go from one of those things you watch between the cracks in your fingers to something actually worthy of a round of applause.

I’ll be in attendance tomorrow during the game and be updating via Twitter and potentially the forums, depending on how good the 3G reception is in the RBC Center. Also, if you haven’t checked out the SFN FanPage on Facebook, you should probably go ahead and do that.

I wonder who you think is going to make such a move? And, why you would want to make such a move while Lee Fowler is the one who would hire the next coach.

    same shit different day….
i wonder if the team will continue to get worse as the year goes on, like usual.

Interesting that a brandnew coach comes out with a win on the road in a ACC opener…i guess sid is on a different timeline, maybe by year 5 we can hope for more Ws. an honerable man/coach would just step down and admit its beyond him

    PS:Vandy just downed UF…

I’d rather have a new coach than someone who has shown he’s the worst in the conference, regardless of who hires them. Nowhere to go but up from where we’re at.

Unacceptable…Absolutely Unacceptable This Loss…And Looking At The Next 5 Games…Im Not Sure If We Can Even Get One…

Watching Our Offense During the 10 Point Lead, We Looked Capable Of Winning This One By 20…Now I Have Very Little Hope We Will Finish Higher Then 12th In The ACC…

It Could’ve Been a Special Rebuilding Season…But One 75 Foot Shot & A Meltdown Against UVA May Have Just Killed It…

Awful. Absolutely awful. I have been positive to this point, thinking this team was on the cusp of being mediocre again. Wrong. They are just plain bad and the coaching today sucked to boot.

    0-fer January here we come!

The blown leads and poor FT shooting just reinforce the fact that we have no mental toughness. The free throws especially are all mental, a 13 year old kid playing in the town rec league can make FT.

It is a sad day when a First year coach can bring a team to Raliegh and thump us by 8 points. We will finish last but i only hope is that we do not go defeated in ACC play.I have a bad feeling that the NCCU game will be our only chance at another victory.

I left a very similiar comment in the forum, but also wanted to repeat it here….

I wasn’t on the bandwagon of having to make the NCAAs to keep his job, but I think DFL should lose it. So we have studs coming in next year, what are they realistically going to do – lift us to 9th or 10th….

Funny how his record here is quickly lining up with his record in the NBA. Two different leagues, overall similar results….

Fowler now must go ASAP, so we can begin to line up a next head coach….

Attendence is low, you can hear the ball being bounced on the court while watching on TV. The team is picked last. Our coach got his degree from a correspondance school which we played in an exhibition game, we suspend a player because of foul comment’s, and lose multiple games over last four years on last second shots, which aren’t defended and we hope to win Five games and hope for NIT or CBT or an tournament bids to where else, Antartica?

I do not know about all of you, but why wait to make a change? Whether the Athletic Director is a nitwit or what, make a change and then confirm to the incoming recruits that next year that you will have a real coach. I am proud of the accomplishment’s of Sidney Lowe as a player here 25 plus years ago, but a coach he is not!
    “Change”

It is time for the Wolfpack Club and Alumini to get this done and if need be have the Athletic Director removed. Now! If this team goes defeated in ACC play,it will take longer for the program to recover.
We cannot live on 1974 and 1983 forever. And our last ACC title of anykind was 1987.

    “Come-on man!”

Don’t you guys know it takes 4 years to get them to play hard.

BTW is there something in this game that points to improvement? If so I do not see it.

I left a similar thought in the forums, but wanted to repeat it here…

I wasn’t of the opinion that Sid had to make the NCAAs to keep his job, BUT I think DFL should lose it. Okay, so we have a great recruiting class lined up, but what realistically it is going to do – lift us to 9th or 10th??

Fowler now must go as soon as realistically possible, so we can begin to line our next head coach….

the problem with firing SL now would be you lose the recruiting class coming next year..plain and simple. Then state hires a up-and-coming mid major coach and we start over from scratch. That option just sucks. The best thing for state to do is just let lowe play out is contract, which is up next year isn’t it? and see where the team is at that point. If we are still with the bottom feeders next year then he definitely has to go.

With all that said this team while more cohesive and grittier than past years still has the same deficiencies…ie it is a horrible rebounding team, no one can create their own shot, no one can dribble penetrate, no one can stop dribble penetration, and now the free throw shooting has gone to shit. We have been looking at the same team for 3 years with different pieces, but still get the same result. So worst scenario might just happen, Sidney’s seat gets too hot, we relieve him of his duties and our top recruiting class in a long time goes by by….sorry but that would put NC State basketball back another 4-6 years.

^^definite step back, I don’t have any positives from this game.

    That sounds familiar.

positives, scott wood may have seen he needs to step up and not wait on his team to get to his level. the kid is going to be solid. wouldn’t mind seeing him shooting each time the ball touches his hands. perhaps it’ll rub off on cj?
