2009-10 ACC Hoops – A Jumbled Freaking Mess

Over the past couple of weeks, things finally settled down enough for me to watch more ACC basketball. I leave my esteemed comrade VaWolf to give you the best ACC analysis by the numbers anywhere, but here’s how I see things.

First, every single ACC team is fatally flawed. Most in multiple areas. Duke is probably the least flawed (iffy depth and athleticism), so in the ACC’s land of the blind, the Devils are the one-eyed king. But does anyone seriously see Duke as a legitimate Final Four contender? I work with several Duke alums, and they unanimously would be less surprised to be upset in the first round. And I agree – this Blue Devil squad has “first weekend exit” written all over it.

Second, the gap between 2nd and 12th is virtually nonexistent. Having watched each school (for at least partial games) at least twice, none of them seem good to me. At all. Even when these teams have their “all cylinders clicking” games, it’s clear they aren’t on sustainable paths to success. This ACCT is going to be hell to predict. I can’t see anybody making it to the finals to get spanked by Duke – but someone kind of has to.

Third, two teams in particular have been very disappointing. I hate to point the finger at my two favorite ACC coaches – but I’m looking at you, Seth Greenburg and Oliver Purnell. Each squad has a bonafide superstar team leader (Malcolm Delaney, Trevor Booker), and enough surrounding pieces (and/or a tested system) that should provide opportunity for upward mobility in a lackluster league year. Clemson has lost 3 consecutive ACC games, including an ugly home loss to Duke (that mojo from last year has completely gone away) and an unforgivable loss to a lousy Boston College team. The Hokies unfathomably needed a last second shot to squeak by the Eagles at home, then lost decisively in Miami today. Next Saturday, these two teams meet in what could be a bubble bursting game for the loser.

Who has positively surprised the most so far? Probably Maryland and Wake Forest (each about 4-5 slots higher than expected). But each of them lost at home to William & Mary. How seriously can we really take them? Virginia has really cooled off after their hot start, and nobody ever really did take them seriously when they were still unbeaten. But Tony Bennett is showing what disciplined play and good coaching can do when conference weakness presents an opportunity.

This reminds me of a Big Ten season in the not-too-distant past. Ohio State and Michigan State were a little down (much like the Holes this year), and nobody else really rose to the top. I believe that 7 teams got NCAAT bids (and the conference SOS was thus fairly strong), but nobody had a seed better than 6th. All but said 6th seed lost in the 1st round, and they lost in round 2.

Even more subjectively, there’s just not a single ACC team that I really enjoy watching play. I suppose we’ve all been spoiled – even when one’s favorite team isn’t so good (uh, we’re pretty used to that here), ACC fans still get treated to watching basketball at its most watchable, enjoyable level. Not this year. I like watching the aforementioned Booker and Delaney, but their teams overall? Ugh.

Notice how little we’ve talked about UNC. Why? They are every bit as inconsequential as the Wolfpack this year. Welcome to our level, guys! Too bad you can’t stay longer.

There are some interesting stats out there. I know that it is still early in the season for these to have too much meaning and lots of bball to be played. Bothj of these are current thru yesterdays games.

First – Ken Pomeroy’s RPI and overall conference ratings:

    http://kenpom.com/conf.php?y=2010&c=ACC

the ACC is in first place over the Big12 nad Big East – this was rather shocking to me.

    Second – the ncss DanceCard:

    http://www.unf.edu/~jcoleman/dance.htm#SAS

has these teams as in (in order) – Duke, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Florida State, Clemson, and then Maryland (at 45 of 47) is real close to the “bubble bursts here” level.

The next closest one to being in is Virginia Tech (67) and Virginia (68) with unc-ch (70), with Boston College and NC State at 88,89 followed lastly by Miami at 95.

Mnay of these teams have room to move up or down.

More like, “Too bad we can’t stay longer!” 🙂

Pomeroy’s data is his own ranking system, not the RPI. Does he do any kind of correlation with his ranking system and the NCAAT selections?

I’ve mentioned the Dance Card several times here. One thing to keep in mind is that they are guessing on exactly where the bubble will burst. Upsets in mid-major conference tourneys will likely move the magic line up.

Side Note…the professors behind the Dance Card used SAS to develop their formula. If you’ve ever heard of Jim Goodnight, then you should get the connection to NCSU.

I think the conference is wide open still. The common factor is that all teams have been very inconsistant. Any one team that could correct that would easily win the regular season. Duke seems to most likely but even they lost badly to Clemson and State.

That being said We still can become a factor by playing good defense and solving our shooting woes. We can’t have position players 2,3 and 4 going 4-22 and win even if we play good defense. I realize running the offense is important but we’ve missed an awful lot of wide open shots
Of the 7 games so far we’ve lost early to Wake, lost to Va(game lost on FTs),to Clemson by 3, and MD,UNX(2nd half shooting in 27%-30%). To me the problems are consistancy not the lack of effort. Can the staff solve this? I hope so.

Top to bottom is not as far as it is in most seasons so there is a chance. I do believe our younger players are improving and that will give us opportunity to finish better than in past years.

UVA looked good last night against UNX but State looked good against Duke. So let’s play them out and see where we are Go Pack!!

I think you’re right, but the Wolfpack needs to start winning NOW. There is still plenty of basketball left to be played between now and the end of the season, but three more conference losses puts us at .500 AT BEST. The next game is a MUST WIN if we’re going to make a move in the conference, and the game is winnable. I don’t care if UVa is tied for first right now, I’m not ready to crown them favorites to win ANYTHING just yet! They’re still Virginia. We had them down and warming up the buses and then the wheels came off. We can beat them, even in Charlottesville. Hopefully we have a little momentum from the second half of the NC Central game that will carry over for us. I’m also hoping they have an emotional letdown after winning so convincingly in Chapel Hill.

    Posted earlier:
“As long as K and Roy are on the sidelines, don’t ever count out Duke or UNC in basketball.”

I would rewrite that to read:
As long as K and Roy have 6 to 8 McDonalds All-Americans on the sidelines, don’t ever count out Duke or UNC in basketball!

i’m looking forward to the uva rematch. it seemed like uva made alomost everything they threw up last night. i credit their defense for keeping unc-ch on their heels. its not a difficult concept, put a little pressure on them, try a smaller lineup. i expect to see a good game, and also to see the same small lineup for uva. have they been in that lineup since the second half of our game. it really caused some problems for us that night.

… my interest continues to grow concerning sid’s disciplinary action on javi.. i hope he comes out of this a better player. we need a leader on the floor.

Thanks for clearing that up Ma Wolfpack about the ACC T which state will be the 12th seed against 5th seeding team. And yes virgina, there is a santa claus and they are for real!! Did anyone see how they clamped down on UNC sunday and UNC may not make the ncaa’s but still that defensive job and play by landsburg(acc player of the week) will get the UVA coach of the year after they get 10 or more acc wins (currently 5-2,well after weds night home game against state(win prediction-+15). I mean the acc this year is weak and UVA and they find new young college COACH and i emphasize coach because we do not have one!(make/miss shots) will make the NCAA’s and perhaps be a sweet sixteen team because bennett can flat out coach.Isn’t it amazing that UVA can have three coaches over the last 10 yrs that not only get teams to the NCAA”S but a regular season acc titles but our pack and ad cannot replace a dull(erb sendecy) with a bright young college coach? Dear lord, it is time for a change!!!

I dread the UVA rematch, this could get ugly. State came out flat at home against a woeful team (rpi 345) and has had a long wait and bad weather and probably some delayed or canceled practices to travel to UVA and play a team taht not only is solid and has a dynamic player(landinsburg) but is looking forward to a home romp over a acc weakling. I jsut hope it does not get ugly and has anyone seen the reports or comments by our current coach?
“there are not much adjsutments to be made at this time and we will see the same things on film” Adjustments? Adjustments? are you kidding? Adjustments? state coach does not press a weak turnover driven team(UNC) and never plays a zone?Zone did i say zone? or Suspends his best player over comments over refs calls? (what would el sid do to John(i am not having fund) Wall? And team rule violations by Javi G and he is a mid season jr? I dread wes, it will be an ugly game and i hope that Mr Murphy will watch with the new chancellor and write the big check to get us a real coach! Oh and rip out the ad too? Lee Fowler, does he not remind you of Goober from Andy griffith?
    Adjustments? are you kidding adjustments?

p.s. i have heard that eventually when el sids time is up,he will not be fired but be given a high position in the athletic dept, somewhere derek w is wondering why he still can’t get credit for his pass to charles loll!
