Wolfpack loses on buzzer beater, 74-76

Alternative Title #1: Do you think Tracy Smith is worth one basket?

Alternative Title #2: Is there some rule against blowing the whistle in favor of NC State in the last five minutes of a ball game?

Final Score
Arizona 76
NC State 74

Free Throw Attempts
Arizona 27
NC State 10

This one really stung. State showed a lot of heart and determination by fighting back and making a game of it after trailing by as much as ten points. Javi Gonzalez deserves a ton of credit for leading the charge.

NC State led 61-60 with 3:43 in the game and couldn’t find a way to score for the next three minutes which ultimately led to a 69-61 Arizona advantage before Julius Mays hit a three pointed with 37.5 seconds remaining to bring the Pack within four points. State ultimately scored an impressive thirteen points in the last 37.5 seconds of the game.

If anyone has this game on DVR, do me the favor of going back and telling me how many calls went NC State’s way in the last 6 to 8 minutes of the game? I’m not kidding. It was like there was only one team on the court.  For example:

  • On the important sequence where Javi Gonzalez was called for a five second violation the official closest to Gonzalez was literally making the separation signal with his arms signalling a re-set of the five second count when another official blew the whistle. <br>
  • Jordan Vandenberg’s fourth foul was called by – you guessed it – Karl Hess from twenty feet behind the play as the official closest to the play under the basket didn’t call anything (since there was no contact and there should of have been no call). <br>
  • Dennis Horner was called for a bullshit ‘charge’ by – you guessed it – Karl Hess on an offensive rebound and a key put back when Arizona’s POINT GUARD took an obvious flop.  Did Horner really need to lean into Nic Wise to gain an advantage?  Whenever I see bullshit like that I ask myself one question that serves to just infuriate me more — would Tyler Hansbrough have been whistled for that exact same call if he were in that position?<br>
  • Javi finally got to the free throw line with less than a minute to go on a foul called on a drive for an old fashioned three point play. Problem is that he got fouled on three consecutive drives and was able to muster getting but one call.<br>
  • In fact, on the last drive of the game that tied the game, Gonzalez was hacked by Nic Wise who was playing with his fourth foul. No call. If the call is made, at the very least Wise is out of the game and we have time to set our defense after Javi’s free throw…which, if he makes would put us up one. Of course, there is no call.

Quick observations:

* Arizona really needs to find someone competent (or unbiased) to run their clock. After what happened the other night one would think they would be focused on accuracy. After Nic Wise’s game winning shot the clock ran down to 0.9 seconds before NC State in-bounded the ball. There should have been approximately 1.6 seconds on the clock after that basket. Since State didn’t call a time out to set up a play it didn’t make much of a difference. But, it could have been a big deal.

* How the @*#) does Sidney Lowe not have a more definted rotation by this point in the season. Seriously. The perpetual substituting is mind numbing.  This is not the NBA.  If you are going to play that many kids for that many different minutes then you need to be pressing and playing 94 feet of tough defense.

* Similar to the Marquette game – the Wolfpack found a way to drastically reduce turnovers after a horrible first 15 minutes with the basketball.

* Dis-similar to the Marquette game – the key to this turnaroud was not Farnold Degand who was either injured or relegated to the dog house again as he was not given much opportunity to play despite Javi Gonzalez’s struggles in the first half. Does CJ Williams really provide that much more than Degand gives you? I’m not pushing Degand over CJ; just asking the question since one of our biggest weaknesses is Javi & Julius’ inability to stop penetration from opposing point guards.

* One player that is not ready to log the number of minutes that he is getting is DeShawn Painter.

* One player that is clearly ready to play is Jordan Vandenberg. Vandenberg is a huge difference maker for the Wolfpack at the defensive end of the court where we are particularly weak as our guards have a very hard time slowing/stopping dribble penetration.

* Richard Howell made nice contributions tonight. It is nice to see him find his footing. Which makes me wonder why we didn’t see a little more of him near the end of the game.

* Dennis Horner didn’t give us anything tonight. Horner was only 3 for 11 tonight. Which speaks to the strong collective effort that the rest of the team turned in.

Some folks on our message boards were really down on Sidney Lowe during the conversations about this game and I must say I’m a little confused. I don’t know many people in their right mind who expected to win a game on the road on the west coast at 10:30 pm EST that ended on Christmas Eve without our best player.

Sure some things could have been different. But, I actually give the coaches and the players a lot of credit for almost pulling that out.

I readily acknowledge there are a lot of arguments against Sidney’s coaching abilities; but I don’t think I would hang my hat on this performance to make that point.

———————————————————————————————–

At the same time that I was logging this entry tobaccordshow was logging his own. We’ve merged that one over to hear for convenience:

Tied at 61 with 3:06 to play… I could feel the collapse beginning. Painter body checks Nick Wise for a blocking foul. A 96% free throw shooter, Nick Wise converts the first half. 62 – 61. As fate would have it, Wise misses the back end, but Vandenberg is called on a lane violation… And what does the Arizona senior do next? Of course he hits nothing but the net. 63 – 61.

On the ensuing possession, our senior, Dennis Horner, gets a chance at a wide open three and bricks hard off the back of the rim.

Coming up the floor, Wise gives a quick no look pass to Williams for an easy jam. 65 – 61.

Julius Mays then dribbles around aimlessly until the clock winds down to 8 and passes. He gets the ball right back and heaves a three that doesn’t fall, but Horner is there and quickly goes up while being defended by Wise, who has 4 fouls. Wise falls to the floor and a charge is called. Looking at the replay, Horner does needlessly dip his shoulder. Reminds me of the play against Wake where he gave a quadruple fake while under the basket with not a single Deacon jersey within 50 yards.

1:47 Sean Miller calls a timeout. Dribble penetration (something we can’t seem to do) with 8 on the shot clock and we get lucky as Dennis Horner hauls in a rebound off of a shot that probably should’ve put the game out of reach.

Our next possession sees a quick feed to Horner from Mays and Horner is literally thrown to the floor and not a whistle can be heard. Maybe this is what Tracy Smith was talking about? Horner can’t dip a shoulder but he can be gang mugged by two Arizona players… Meanwhile the announcers call it a “clean block.” Sure.

Now we have to foul. And who do we foul? 96% shooter Nick Wise. Just stay out of the lane please! Converts the front end of the one-and-one. 66 – 61. And he does the same on the back end. 67 – 61.

Horner is again fouled while shooting. No call as Arizona pulls down the rebound. And we foul. 69 – 61. Now it’s officially out of reach with 53.6 to go.

Gonzalez misses a three. Offensive rebound. Mays misses a three. Offensive rebound. Mays finally gets a lucky bounce. The last time we scored was off of a Scott Wood 3-pointer with 3:43 left to play. I’d like to know where our time outs were as not a single one was called in a late game drought… the type that will not be kind in ACC play. 64 – 69.

Full court press. We foul immediately. 70 – 64. Desperation time.

Javi goes coast-to-coast with a layup and-1. 30.4 to play. I’m screaming at the team in the locker room over that foul if I’m Sean Miller. We get lucky. 66 – 70 with Javi going to the line. Javi converts the free throw to make it a one possession game 67 – 70.

Foul with 28.1 to go. But again it’s Nick Wise on the receiving end of the foul. Wise misses the first (his third one of the night) but makes the second. 67 – 71.

Javi tries the coast-to-coast thing again but is blocked pretty fantastically. Redemption though as Javi receives the inbounds pass and hits a HUGE 3. What is this? A one point game?? 70 – 71.

Foul immediately with 18.5 to play. Finally, we foul Soloman Hill, a 76% shooter. Hits the first. 70 – 72. And the second. 70 – 73. A forlorn Tracy Smith looks on helplessly.

Javi again goes coast-to-coast tripping and falling and throwing the ball up. And somehow it goes in. 72 – 73 with 13 seconds to play.

We foul. 1 for 2 on the line. 72 – 74. Coast to coast again? Hah. Yes. This is reminiscent of Mazzone ball. 2 swing passes? How about 1 more on 3rd-and-long. Except Javi again comes up clutch without a single Arizona defender in his way to tie the game. 74 – 74!

But… We get a dose of our own coast-to-coast medicine and despite forcing Arizona to a circus shot, it is Nick Wise who writes the Packs demise… The hard thing to swallow here is that there are 3 Pack defenders around Wise. I know a foul is a tough thing to force here… but still a tough way to lose.

With fractions of a second, Julius Mays heaves a full court shot and almost makes it…

This leaves me with wondering what the coaching staff was doing during our 3:00 drought where we couldn’t buy a shot and when we weren’t shooting, we were giving the ball away. Oh well. Probably should get used to this feeling.

Our community had a lively discussion about tonight’s game. And as always, our readers seem to provide some rather keen analysis:

I think you are right about the team growing up w/o Smith our freshman have played decent and we certainly have not given up

Richard Howell certainly had a coming out game tonight with some very key plays in the second half. Scott Wood and Deshaun Painter also contributed key plays. It’s nice to see some of the new guys playing and performing well in tough situations. With Tracy Smith, who knows how this one falls as we will ride the rest of our few wins on Tracy’s back. Nonetheless, our freshmen were given a shot in Smith’s absence and, for all intents and purposes, they played well.

The officiating was horrible at times. Hey Sid, are you going to suspend me too?

Javi definitely gets the game ball as he single handedly – and sometimes not purposefully – fueled our late game drive.

“Quit” is not a term in this team’s vocabulary. But just because you don’t quit doesn’t mean you still don’t lose. The past two games have shown a very ugly – yet very scrappy Wolfpack team. Perhaps this is a pleasant observation as, coming into this season, I was just expecting ugly.

Above is a link to the boxscore for the game.

Overall, pleased w/ the EFFORT, however, execution lacked. I was furious last night w/ Lowe though…with 3 + minutes left, he puts in Painter.

Not enough to put in Painter in this situatin – they actually try to run the offense through him. He gets the ball down low – his outlets are covered and he forces a pass to Javi – it’s stolen. Then on the D, he doesn’t move his feet well enough and fouls Wise.

I think Painter can be a good player for us. However, I just don’t see how he’s our best option at that point. You’ve got Howell – who has played well offensively. You’ve got Vandenberg who has been the Windex man – 11 rebounds in 25 minutes. (I do think Painter is better than Vandenberg offensively, probably better than Howell defensively.)

But please, if you’re going to run a set where you are looking to triangulate w/ a post man – Vandenberg’s a better passer and Howell is more of an offensive threat.

I really believe that this set was where we “lost” this game. We had the ball in a tie game…it was a critical possession and Sid made, IMHO, a horrible tactical error.

I’ll be shocked if Howell doesn’t transfer if this keeps up. He looked pretty pissed on the bench. After being a force down low in the second half – and being a key part of getting us from a 10 point deficit to right back in the game – he sits the last 7-8 minutes of the game. I really, really hope he did something to deserve to sit…because if our coach forgot he was there or thought he had better options for offense from our bigs….

^^ SFN, I believe we were out of time outs after the Nic(K) Wise made basket. Had we called one, I’m sure Hess would have T’ed us up to make the margin of victory higher for AZ.

Alternate Title #3: Pack gets 100% totally screwed. No way Nick Wise should have even been in the game to make the last shot.

He clearly whacked Javi on Javi’s tying basket with no call. How do you not call that? Javi should have been at the line taking a free throw and Nick Wise should have had his ass on the bench with his 5th foul. No way Nick Wise does not foul out in that game. Oh yea, I forgot, there is a way . . .

We got TOTALLY SCREWED by the refs in this one. No question about it. 100% TOTALLY SCREWED.

It was strange to take the hot hand off the court (during his hot streak) and sit him the remainder of the game?

Howell must have done something to piss Lowe off. No other sane reason to sit him down.

  5. ADVENTUROO 12/24/2009 at 10:28 AM #

The officiating, as usual, did NOT reflect the quality of the game.

Nic Adams “slute to Knute” by jumping on the press table when there was still play going on is a travesity.

Shaun Miller’s spending time with Tracy during the final handshake was classy. It is obvious, from watching Archy play that their dad raised two fine men.

While I was dejected and unhappy about the final score, it does show that the team has a lot of talent and can really play, when motivated.

We need to eliminate some of the stupid errors during the game (like stepping into the lane on a free throw, turnovers, NOT getting OFFENSIVE Rebounds, etc.). Therefore, we would NOT be so pressed at the end.

Time to give the Pack a Christmas break and quit over analyzing what is going on.

Merry Christmas to all and the Pack

^^^Howell had a few really bad turnovers, and was not the most impressive on the defensive end, plus that 25 foot 3 point attempt. I’m sure all of those played a role in his sitting down the stretch. Too much turnover risk. He did show a lot of improvement and looks to be a contributor in the future. He’s got to quit putting the ball on the floor when he get’s it inside though, but that’s a freshman thing.

^^Yes, we were out of timeouts. Had used the last one on our previous offensive scor to stop the clock and set up the defense.

Re: The Smith/Vandenberg lineup…I guess this works if Vandenberg can play the high post…We don’t want Tracy straying too far from the basket.

Some more thoughts on Vandenberg…First off – he did a fantastic job on the boards. Secondly, he does a good job altering shots. Hats off to Arizona – they used the glass very well and used reverse layups a good bit to minimize his shot blocking ability (still trying to figure out how he only gets credit for 1 block.)

One thing about our biggest player – he gets tired quickly – and when he gets tired he fouls.

Primacy – regarding Howell – he was probably tired as well. I really didn’t have a problem w/ Lowe sitting him when he did. What I found problematic was that we subbed Painter for Howell. Painter struggles defensively too – and made more TO’s than Howell did.

  8. PackToTheFuture 12/24/2009 at 10:59 AM #

I almost threw my beer across the bar over the refs but remembered i didn’t go to EZU. I honestly think we should refuse to play any more games until the ACC figures out why there is a huge bias against NC State and handles it.

  9. rbwolf 12/24/2009 at 11:01 AM #

Say what you want we lose to a worst team. I am glad I don’t watch anymore. Bad thing is my son who is 5 years old asked me this morning after watching espn and saw the score was Does State ever Win? I had to tell him not in is lifetime. Lord help us. Another long year as a N.C. State fan.

  10. Ed89 12/24/2009 at 11:10 AM #

We’ve got to get some production from our #2 guard. CJ Williams is looking eerily similar to Courtney. Lo Brown would have really helped this team. Javi is learning to be a very, very good PG. Without him, we easily lose. He, and the entire team, showed alot of heart. Good to see Scott Wood breaking out of his slump. Dennis did not have a good game. He is really a SF with the speed of a PF.

  11. packof81 12/24/2009 at 11:21 AM #

Losing is getting real old. I dread the upcoming ACC schedule. I’ve seen the other teams and ours in action. We’re facing some grim prospects.

  12. g6bentgrass 12/24/2009 at 11:40 AM #

My observation that I haven’t seen mentioned: Vandenburg was open several times with a clear lane to the basket after setting the screen for a point guard at the top. Javi nor Mays never threw him the ball. They either just didn’t see him or don’t have the confidence in him yet. He would have had to dribble a step or two to get to the basket, but he was wide open after the pick and roll late in the game. This woul have been a great play during the end of game drought. Coaches should have seen that and set up a play for him.

  13. Thinkpack17 12/24/2009 at 11:56 AM #

Vandy with both feet outside the paint is not an offensive option. He got the ball in the post…although we did bypass him many times. He takes one dribble, only one and then he looks to pass. Once he dropped a bounce pass for a nice play. But even he is not looking to score with a post move right now.

I’d posted on some threads that I didn’t expect to win this after watching AZ earlier in the season. Wise is a solid guard and I knew he’d chew us up. When TS was out, I had this penciled as a loss.

    Some random thoughts:
    – The refs stunk, but that was to be expected. We were on the road with Hess officiating coming off a game where TS publicly criticized Hess’s crew. I knew we were going to get jobbed. This more than anything else has really reduced my love of college basketball.
    – Having said that, we didn’t lose due to the refs. We lost tonight due to four reasons — no perimeter defense, too many first half turnovers from everyone, lack of production from the SG position and Horner having an extremely tough go of it. These are consistent things this season when we lose.
    – We showed great effort. That’s my favorite thing about this team.
    – Having KS in there when we could have brought JD in was mind boggling.
    – Painter will improve, but Howell is a much better option now. Hopefully this is Howell’s coming out party.
    – Great last 37 seconds or so for the Pack. I thought I was watching a JimmyV coached team out there. I don’t understand why we didn’t do the same against Wake.
    – Poor 3:10 prior to the last 37 seconds. Horner really struggled in that span. We need more from our Senior.
    – I think Sid’s given up on FD. Given his lack of production tonight, I guess I can understand why. He’s a Senior and I’m guessing will go out seeing just spot duty this season.
    – JD, Howell and Painter need to take 500 FTs a day until they can hit 80%. When you’re not getting to the line much, you have to make every one.
    – Vandenberg really impressed me on the defensive end and with the rebounds. He’s not much of an offensive threat though. If I were the guards, I wouldn’t dish to him on a pick and roll.
    – CJW is becoming as much of an enigma as Fells was to me. He can score 3 times straight and then not score again for 20 solid minutes. I think it is mental. He is only a sophomore though, so there’s upside associated with his PT (at least I hope).
    – Hopefully SW is shooting his way into form. He looked pretty solid tonight and I’ll take 4-8 any day of the week. He’ll start shooting more when his shot is falling and we’ll have a 10 PPG threat (which we desperately need).
    – Nice halftime adjustments by the staff. Nice switching of defenses which threw AZ off. Some questionable substitution patterns. The staff has to figure out how to get the team ready to win the first half. We can’t keep going in down almost double digits at the break.
    – The announcers and coverage was horrible.

  15. PoppaJohn 12/24/2009 at 12:14 PM #

All in all, I thought we got something out of this game.

AZ is an ‘average at best’ team and we are not that good, yet we played them right to the end and lost on a final shot without our leading scorer. At times I thought we played really well.

I still think the future looks good – Of our 200 minutes, 93 were played by freshmen. A third of our points were scored by freshmen. Over half of our rebounds, 2 of 3 steals, 2 of 3 blocked shots and only 5 of our 20 turnovers were by freshmen. Of course they are incredibly inconsistent and make some bonehead moves, but this is just their 11th college game. I think these guys are going to be really good in a year or two.

We’ve got to stop whining about officiating. I don’t disagree that it is terrible at times, but Tracey said it right, “…I think they favored Wake Forest all the way but that’s ACC basketball. You’ve got to play through that.” And it’s not just ACC basketball, it’s all basketball. If we’d played better for the last five minutes, none of us would care about the officiating.

I thought I saw signs of coaching last night that was encouraging. I wish he’d saved a timeout, but really saw that he positively impacted the game.

But, I still say this is going to be a long, cold winter.

  16. fullmoon1 12/24/2009 at 12:24 PM #

I can’t really fault the substitutions as foul trouble dictates the line up often. We dang near won with the guys we had on the floor. I also think SL went with the best deffensive players. I don’t really care who Arizona has beat or lost to, that doesn’t mean a whole lot, if it did then we should’ve beat Wake they lost to William and Mary. It’s nice that we have Javi in clutch time now. He’s all growed up.

  17. Thinkpack17 12/24/2009 at 12:34 PM #

People are complaining about the Kendall Smith thing. He didn’t get into the game OVER Degand. He is a power forward, Degand is a SG…totally different positions. Besides that he played like 3 minutes…tops.

  18. Texpack 12/24/2009 at 12:47 PM #

Howell was gassed when he came out of the game. Last night in the second half was the first time he’s looked capable of contributing to me.

Vandenburg has to get more minutes. His interior defense and rebounding will help keep Smith out of foul trouble. My inside rotation is Howell, Vandenburg, Smith and Horner.

  19. bradleyb123 12/24/2009 at 1:10 PM #

^^^ “After Nic Wise’s game winning shot the clock ran down to 0.9 seconds before NC State in-bounded the ball. There should have been approximately 1.6 seconds on the clock after that basket. Since State didn’t call a time out to set up a play it didn’t make much of a difference. But, it could have been a big deal.”

State didn’t have any more timeouts at that point. I agree, I thought we lost nearly a second after that made shot. I was kinda disappointed that we inbounded the ball as if the clock was still running. Here we are, down two, 60 feet from the basket, less than a second left, with the ball in play. I wish we had had the presence of mind to throw a LONG pass so we actually would have had a prayer. Inbounding like we did was almost the same as taking a knee in football to run out the clock, when you’re down 6 points.

Not that we would have made it. But inbounding most definitely just ended the game.

I was happy with the way we fought back like that, though. By all rights, this game should have gone to overtime.

And yes, Tracy Smith would have most certainly been worth at least three points. With him in the lineup, we win this one going away. Which is the way it should be. Arizona blows chunks.

  20. bradleyb123 12/24/2009 at 1:19 PM #

^^^ “To be fair, I thought Javi clearly traveled on his spin around jumper late in the game. I went back again and looked at it and he took a couple of hops. But I will agree, the officiating down the stretch favored Arizona.”

To be even more fair, I thought Javi was bumped on that drive, which caused the travel. I let it go — no foul call, no travel call. Seems fair.

And with Tracy Smith in the game, we win this one going away. Arizona IS a bad team. But we were missing a very KEY player last night, too. And we played right awful in the first half. We had a lot of unforced turnovers. Just couldn’t get in sync.

I’m not calling this a moral victory. A moral victory is just another word for a loss anyway. But I have to make one more observation. The clock management and scoring at the end that enabled us to overcome an 8 point deficit in 30 seconds of game clock was phenomenal. That’s as good as ANY team out there. It was probably more impressive than Duke’s big comeback over Maryland that year. They had a full minute to overcome 10 points. We overcame 8 points in 30 seconds.

I believe we have plenty of reason to be hopeful for better things this season, despite what many might think.

  21. choppack1 12/24/2009 at 1:52 PM #

“Howell was gassed when he came out of the game. Last night in the second half was the first time he’s looked capable of contributing to me.”

I’d tend to agree. The 1 million dollar question is was he still tired at the 4 minute mark. He’d had a few minutes to catch his breath. My guess would be that he would have liked to have played during that span – and clearly, he was one of our better performers in the game.

I’m going to pass judgement on both he and Vanderberg’s conditioning right now, but it will be interesting to see if they improve w/ time.

In the topic -someone noted that we should be pressing more. I don’t know if that’s the case. However, we should definitely be playing harder in the first half.

Our team seems to have a collective attitude that if they can just get through the first half w/in 15 points – they’ve done enough. They need to play ALL 40 minutes w/ intensity and focus. I tend to think that this is more a reflection of the coach and our preparation than it is the players…after all, this isn’t exactly a new problem.

  22. graywolf 12/24/2009 at 2:06 PM #

I think that Coach Lowe is going to be an effective recruiter. I have a lot of concern however in his floor coaching ability. Why was Javi out of the game as much as he was? I know he is nursing a hamstring but he is the glue that holds this team together along with Tracey Smith.

I think we win this one with Smith in the game.
I was impressed with the play of our freshmen and think that we will be a much better team next year.
One can only hope for the future.

  23. JeremyH 12/24/2009 at 2:10 PM #

the game that we win because we had Smith in the lineup never happened, and doesn’t resemble the game we saw last night. there is no point to make there

  24. Daily Update 12/24/2009 at 2:17 PM #

How did Javi only get 21 minutes? I know he had 6 TOs, but IMO you just have to let him play through it. Mays isn’t athletic enough to do anything out there.

Sidney needs to let him play.

  25. Shadow722 12/24/2009 at 2:43 PM #

    Daily Update,

    Not to dispute your analysis:

But maybe the drive Javi showed at the end was because he played “only” 21 minutes?

    As far a Mays goes:

13 points + 4 OREB + 4 Asst + 1 TO in 27 minutes does not seem like nonathletic chump change.

    Javi on the other hand:

18 points + 2 REB + 6 Asst + 1 STL + 6 TO in 21 minutes. Javi was not having a stellar game until the last minute of play.

Certainly Javi night after night brings more to the table than Mays, but until that last wild minute, Javi was playing a poor game even by his standards, and the playing time Mays got reflected that fact…

    Just saying…..

And if we don’t sub Mays for Javi who plays point? Degand? In 9 minutes he delivered absolutely Nothing, Nada, Zero. Not a point, assist, rebound, steal or TO…..
