Wolfpack loses on buzzer beater, 74-76

Alternative Title #1: Do you think Tracy Smith is worth one basket?

Alternative Title #2: Is there some rule against blowing the whistle in favor of NC State in the last five minutes of a ball game?

Final Score
Arizona 76
NC State 74

Free Throw Attempts
Arizona 27
NC State 10

This one really stung. State showed a lot of heart and determination by fighting back and making a game of it after trailing by as much as ten points. Javi Gonzalez deserves a ton of credit for leading the charge.

NC State led 61-60 with 3:43 in the game and couldn’t find a way to score for the next three minutes which ultimately led to a 69-61 Arizona advantage before Julius Mays hit a three pointed with 37.5 seconds remaining to bring the Pack within four points. State ultimately scored an impressive thirteen points in the last 37.5 seconds of the game.

If anyone has this game on DVR, do me the favor of going back and telling me how many calls went NC State’s way in the last 6 to 8 minutes of the game? I’m not kidding. It was like there was only one team on the court. For example:

  • On the important sequence where Javi Gonzalez was called for a five second violation the official closest to Gonzalez was literally making the separation signal with his arms signalling a re-set of the five second count when another official blew the whistle.
• Jordan Vandenberg’s fourth foul was called by – you guessed it – Karl Hess from twenty feet behind the play as the official closest to the play under the basket didn’t call anything (since there was no contact and there should of have been no call).
• Dennis Horner was called for a bullshit ‘charge’ by – you guessed it – Karl Hess on an offensive rebound and a key put back when Arizona’s POINT GUARD took an obvious flop. Did Horner really need to lean into Nic Wise to gain an advantage? Whenever I see bullshit like that I ask myself one question that serves to just infuriate me more — would Tyler Hansbrough have been whistled for that exact same call if he were in that position?
• Javi finally got to the free throw line with less than a minute to go on a foul called on a drive for an old fashioned three point play. Problem is that he got fouled on three consecutive drives and was able to muster getting but one call.
• In fact, on the last drive of the game that tied the game, Gonzalez was hacked by Nic Wise who was playing with his fourth foul. No call. If the call is made, at the very least Wise is out of the game and we have time to set our defense after Javi’s free throw…which, if he makes would put us up one. Of course, there is no call.

Quick observations:

* Arizona really needs to find someone competent (or unbiased) to run their clock. After what happened the other night one would think they would be focused on accuracy. After Nic Wise’s game winning shot the clock ran down to 0.9 seconds before NC State in-bounded the ball. There should have been approximately 1.6 seconds on the clock after that basket. Since State didn’t call a time out to set up a play it didn’t make much of a difference. But, it could have been a big deal.

* How the @*#) does Sidney Lowe not have a more definted rotation by this point in the season. Seriously. The perpetual substituting is mind numbing. This is not the NBA. If you are going to play that many kids for that many different minutes then you need to be pressing and playing 94 feet of tough defense.

* Similar to the Marquette game – the Wolfpack found a way to drastically reduce turnovers after a horrible first 15 minutes with the basketball.

* Dis-similar to the Marquette game – the key to this turnaroud was not Farnold Degand who was either injured or relegated to the dog house again as he was not given much opportunity to play despite Javi Gonzalez’s struggles in the first half. Does CJ Williams really provide that much more than Degand gives you? I’m not pushing Degand over CJ; just asking the question since one of our biggest weaknesses is Javi & Julius’ inability to stop penetration from opposing point guards.

* One player that is not ready to log the number of minutes that he is getting is DeShawn Painter.

* One player that is clearly ready to play is Jordan Vandenberg. Vandenberg is a huge difference maker for the Wolfpack at the defensive end of the court where we are particularly weak as our guards have a very hard time slowing/stopping dribble penetration.

* Richard Howell made nice contributions tonight. It is nice to see him find his footing. Which makes me wonder why we didn’t see a little more of him near the end of the game.

* Dennis Horner didn’t give us anything tonight. Horner was only 3 for 11 tonight. Which speaks to the strong collective effort that the rest of the team turned in.

Some folks on our message boards were really down on Sidney Lowe during the conversations about this game and I must say I’m a little confused. I don’t know many people in their right mind who expected to win a game on the road on the west coast at 10:30 pm EST that ended on Christmas Eve without our best player.

Sure some things could have been different. But, I actually give the coaches and the players a lot of credit for almost pulling that out.

I readily acknowledge there are a lot of arguments against Sidney’s coaching abilities; but I don’t think I would hang my hat on this performance to make that point.

———————————————————————————————–

At the same time that I was logging this entry tobaccordshow was logging his own. We’ve merged that one over to hear for convenience:

Tied at 61 with 3:06 to play… I could feel the collapse beginning. Painter body checks Nick Wise for a blocking foul. A 96% free throw shooter, Nick Wise converts the first half. 62 – 61. As fate would have it, Wise misses the back end, but Vandenberg is called on a lane violation… And what does the Arizona senior do next? Of course he hits nothing but the net. 63 – 61.

On the ensuing possession, our senior, Dennis Horner, gets a chance at a wide open three and bricks hard off the back of the rim.

Coming up the floor, Wise gives a quick no look pass to Williams for an easy jam. 65 – 61.

Julius Mays then dribbles around aimlessly until the clock winds down to 8 and passes. He gets the ball right back and heaves a three that doesn’t fall, but Horner is there and quickly goes up while being defended by Wise, who has 4 fouls. Wise falls to the floor and a charge is called. Looking at the replay, Horner does needlessly dip his shoulder. Reminds me of the play against Wake where he gave a quadruple fake while under the basket with not a single Deacon jersey within 50 yards.

1:47 Sean Miller calls a timeout. Dribble penetration (something we can’t seem to do) with 8 on the shot clock and we get lucky as Dennis Horner hauls in a rebound off of a shot that probably should’ve put the game out of reach.

Our next possession sees a quick feed to Horner from Mays and Horner is literally thrown to the floor and not a whistle can be heard. Maybe this is what Tracy Smith was talking about? Horner can’t dip a shoulder but he can be gang mugged by two Arizona players… Meanwhile the announcers call it a “clean block.” Sure.

Now we have to foul. And who do we foul? 96% shooter Nick Wise. Just stay out of the lane please! Converts the front end of the one-and-one. 66 – 61. And he does the same on the back end. 67 – 61.

Horner is again fouled while shooting. No call as Arizona pulls down the rebound. And we foul. 69 – 61. Now it’s officially out of reach with 53.6 to go.

Gonzalez misses a three. Offensive rebound. Mays misses a three. Offensive rebound. Mays finally gets a lucky bounce. The last time we scored was off of a Scott Wood 3-pointer with 3:43 left to play. I’d like to know where our time outs were as not a single one was called in a late game drought… the type that will not be kind in ACC play. 64 – 69.

Full court press. We foul immediately. 70 – 64. Desperation time.

Javi goes coast-to-coast with a layup and-1. 30.4 to play. I’m screaming at the team in the locker room over that foul if I’m Sean Miller. We get lucky. 66 – 70 with Javi going to the line. Javi converts the free throw to make it a one possession game 67 – 70.

Foul with 28.1 to go. But again it’s Nick Wise on the receiving end of the foul. Wise misses the first (his third one of the night) but makes the second. 67 – 71.

Javi tries the coast-to-coast thing again but is blocked pretty fantastically. Redemption though as Javi receives the inbounds pass and hits a HUGE 3. What is this? A one point game?? 70 – 71.

Foul immediately with 18.5 to play. Finally, we foul Soloman Hill, a 76% shooter. Hits the first. 70 – 72. And the second. 70 – 73. A forlorn Tracy Smith looks on helplessly.

Javi again goes coast-to-coast tripping and falling and throwing the ball up. And somehow it goes in. 72 – 73 with 13 seconds to play.

We foul. 1 for 2 on the line. 72 – 74. Coast to coast again? Hah. Yes. This is reminiscent of Mazzone ball. 2 swing passes? How about 1 more on 3rd-and-long. Except Javi again comes up clutch without a single Arizona defender in his way to tie the game. 74 – 74!

But… We get a dose of our own coast-to-coast medicine and despite forcing Arizona to a circus shot, it is Nick Wise who writes the Packs demise… The hard thing to swallow here is that there are 3 Pack defenders around Wise. I know a foul is a tough thing to force here… but still a tough way to lose.

With fractions of a second, Julius Mays heaves a full court shot and almost makes it…

This leaves me with wondering what the coaching staff was doing during our 3:00 drought where we couldn’t buy a shot and when we weren’t shooting, we were giving the ball away. Oh well. Probably should get used to this feeling.

Our community had a lively discussion about tonight’s game. And as always, our readers seem to provide some rather keen analysis:

I think you are right about the team growing up w/o Smith our freshman have played decent and we certainly have not given up

Richard Howell certainly had a coming out game tonight with some very key plays in the second half. Scott Wood and Deshaun Painter also contributed key plays. It’s nice to see some of the new guys playing and performing well in tough situations. With Tracy Smith, who knows how this one falls as we will ride the rest of our few wins on Tracy’s back. Nonetheless, our freshmen were given a shot in Smith’s absence and, for all intents and purposes, they played well.

The officiating was horrible at times. Hey Sid, are you going to suspend me too?

Javi definitely gets the game ball as he single handedly – and sometimes not purposefully – fueled our late game drive.

“Quit” is not a term in this team’s vocabulary. But just because you don’t quit doesn’t mean you still don’t lose. The past two games have shown a very ugly – yet very scrappy Wolfpack team. Perhaps this is a pleasant observation as, coming into this season, I was just expecting ugly.

I think Dennis tries to force things in the first half. He is effective with Tracey because he can play off Tracey. And I am wondering how many times he needs to get knocked down before they will give him a foul. It’s a lot easier to block shots if you can play through the offensive player.

Painter has a lot of skills; he just need to play more efficiently. If you try to use too much space on offense, you will get fouls called. Vandeberg did exactly what was asked; when he develops a couple of moves, he will be very good.

I disagree of your assesment of Williams vs. Degand. CJ (finally) used his ability to shoot mid-range jumpers and scored effectively. Degand really didn’t give us anything tonight.

I also disagree with your substitution comment. Our front line was thrown off by the loss of Tracey. He knows who he is going to play and adjusts it by who is being effective. I don’t know what I would have done differently.

Wood seems to be out of his shooting slump. And Howell could be REAL good!

Disappointed in the loss but I am more encouraged after this effort.

^ Totally fair comments and you hit on what I would consider ‘weakest’ points with very justifiable positions.

It also needs to be said that every single person associated with that FSN production should be fired.

The main camera man should not be panning into the bench with time left on the clock.
The play by play man shouldn’t be that biased towards the PAC 10, christ. Just like he shouldn’t have said the game was OVER with one second left.
Any commentator, unless he’s been in the business awhile should not be calling his own team.
The producers shouldn’t have let that horrible camerawork continue to happen, the main camera panned into the bench like that server times.
We almost missed State hit a game winning three pointer because of those idiots.
If I see Karl Hess again any time soon, reffing NC State, something is wrong.
Why did the officials not stop play to check the clock? We could have got an extra 0.3-0.4, but may have gotten a better chance without it. I don’t know. I mean they are ACC refs… after the whole Duke/Clemson thing and many other timing errors in the last couple years you would think they would have done it.

That said, Nic Wise was very close to being on the press table towards the crowd celebrating the win before the game was completely over.

BTW, it probably won’t happen any time soon but these kinds of games, maybe not in-conference games, I really wouldn’t mind seeing each team have their own TV feed, like professional teams do.

For the record I like alt title two but Im afraid you will be suspended for one game. Javi became the floor leader he has always needed to be. I like the way he took charge at the end despite not getting any calls. I think now we have an option other then dishing to Smith. So when Smith is covered up we actually have options. A loss sucks but I like this alot better than the wake debacle. A lot of good things came to light in this game, i mean we have options on offense. That is progress. It seems that we improved upon the previous game. We will be in better shape having for the regular season having played this game.

all state fans should feel dooped by wasted potential, and that is what we are all watching. some of you are OK with that, others are not.

    So, could you do better?

certainly not, but i am not held in a position where my performance as a basketball coach matters, am i? i hate arm chair quarterbacks just as much as anyone, but what i hate even more is lack of accountability….
The season is still early, and this team has lots of room for improvement,
its clear the season is over for all intensive purposes.
500 in the ACC is a fantasy, but are we unreasonable for wanting that? i guess thats what some of you critics of us critics are saying.
not everyone is comfortable with watching this team throw shit against a wall to see what sticks. thats clearly what happened tonight.

some positives could be seeing how good scott woods shot really is, and maybe some other small bright spots. but really where is the X factor? where is the ability to hold and maintain a lead? when is the team/coach going to get pissed off and handle this, and refuse to accept failure?

just watching the last drive by nick wise on sports center, yeah that just happened. it was utterly pathetic. and it was even more pathetic on Arizonas part for not being able to finish the game with 5 mins to go.

i think most of the beef amongst us “critics” is the wasted potential…
i`m sorry but i’m %100 sure that was a winnable game. easily winnable. forget expections, forget that it was 10:30, forget that it wasnt in our time zone, forget what conference it was it, forget what place the team was picked to finished.
you know? maybe thats the problem, these guys are playing victum to their expectations. thats probably not the root of the problem, but still.
i dont think myself, or any other fan is unreasonable for wanting a team to defy expectations, and god forbid go above 500 in the ACC.
yes some of us get down on the team, yes some of us are nay sayers, some would also call us realists. what i personally am waiting for is for someone within the program to refuse this pathetic sucking and get so pissed off that a positive change results, but the status quo mentality continues to dominate day to day life in the world of wolfpack athletics.

  9. StateFans 12/24/2009 at 2:52 AM #

I thought there should have been 1.6 seconds on the clock after their basket. Instead, the clock was run down to 0.9 seconds. Since we didn’t call a time out to set up a play it didn’t make much of a difference. But, it could have been a big deal.

  10. maverick_ncsu 12/24/2009 at 3:32 AM #

While I agree very much with the positives from tonights game that have already been brought to light, I am wondering if anyone else is as concerned as I am with the amount of fouls we are committing and how little we are getting to the line.

I am very aware of ACC officiating and so I am not concerned with that discussion here. Regardless of the horrible officiating, though, we are still committing useless fouls that, to me, show more about our lack of defense than about the bad officiating.

Is this something that we will improve on this season, or are we in for a very long season of high foul numbers (and fouls that apparently allow the opposing team to shoot free throws in contrast to their fouls just allowing us to reset the play clock and inbound the ball)?

  11. GAWolf 12/24/2009 at 5:47 AM #

Thank goodness I opted for sleep over this game. Expectedly disappointing. sounds like the effort was there, but as usual we’re a dollar short. I’m heading out to shoot some ducks ducks in the lips. Merry Christmas to you all. This is a basketball game and tomorrow it’s all unimportant, dont forget that.

  12. wolfonthehill 12/24/2009 at 8:17 AM #

Since I’m feeling tired & lazy this morning, I’m just going to copy/paste what I posted at BTP…

Not to harp on it, but in a 2-point loss decided on a last-second shot, things like this matter.

I recall during the liveblog two specific examples of blatantly incorrect calls that gave Arizona the ball. One led to a 3, the other to a 2. I really don’t want to hear the “good teams overcome that” bullshit… when you have two evenly-matched teams, those calls can and do indeed make the difference in the game, and that’s unacceptable.

Other points of note regarding Hess & his boys… Nic “can I buy a K” Wise committed 4 fouls… after he picked up his 4th foul. The one that stands out the most is obviously the slap on Javi’s last bucket. Call that, and we’re up 1… and Wise isn’t available for last-second heroics. Just call that one, and we’re likely celebrating a great come-from-behind win. Instead, those calls went against Tracy the other night, he had the gall to mention it, he sits out, Wise gets the star treatment that Tracy deserved, and we lose.

Which brings us to Javi. The dude’s turning into an absolute beast in the last few minutes of the game, in crunch time. If he can keep that up, we will win more games than we deserve this year.

And lest we forget – yes, there were positives from this game. Jordan did not look like a wasted scholarship… he’s still raw and a bit clumsy, but our coaches will be able to teach him…. BWAHAHAHAHA!!!! …. sorry, forgot that we don’t have coaches. But Howell did look like he can contribute, Wood hit a big 3 (I still want him taking key shots – I trust him), Mays rarely went all “Mays” on us, and the offense showed a few signs of movement in the 2nd half (including Jordan’s sweet little pass to a cutting CJ).

But all in all, as you mentioned, Arizona’s a bad basketball team. And we lost to that team. Overall, we looked pretty even… which doesn’t make us worse than bad… just bad.

No news there… unfortunately, this is probably one of the better games we’ll play this year. And I’m developing fears that, no matter who you put into this offense, we’re going to be pretty ineffective on that end of the court. You can’t have an offense where you have dead-eye shooters who have to create their own shots. This isn’t the NBA, and clear-outs/one-on-ones aren’t going to consistently get it done. There are better ways… it just appears that we don’t know any of them.

Before anyone claims a moral “victory” in this loss, remember Arizona’s record: 5-4 with losses to San Diego State, UNLV, Wisconsin, and Vanderbilt. There biggest win was over college basketball powerhouse Colorado.

I’m tired of seeing us lose on the margin. We lose to every friggin team that has equal talent unless we have a miraculous night that includes a barrage of threes and a prayer (e.g. Marquette). AZ would be a bottom feeder in the ACC and we feasted off their arse last night.

    Merry bleeping Christmas.

  16. BassPacker 12/24/2009 at 8:22 AM #

The last 4 minutes of the game was both exciting and dissappointing to watch. Eliminate the 9-0 scoring run AZ had, we win easily. The defense showed hussle, really liked what Vandenburg put on the floor. I think if he had atleast been giving some reward touches of the ball on offensive, it would have helped. He was wide open several times in the lane late.
My comments about Lowe was more on frustration trying to figure out his bench rotation. Most glaring was the playing walk on Smith over Degand or Davis.
Overall, I really like the hussle and no-quit attitude of this team. We always seem to find away to lose more than win. Javi made some key baskets late but he also made two critical turnovers late in a 5 second call and walk. Horner finally showed up the 2nd half, he missed a huge open 3 with less than 2 minutes to play that would have probably made AZ have to foul us the rest of game. I know this was a game we were NOT suppose to win but with a basket here and a call there, we had it.

  17. GoldenChain 12/24/2009 at 9:01 AM #

I agree with Statefans recap (except about Degand). The 1st half was horrid. I considered going to bed. Then the team gained mo as the second half went on. Hopefully Javi has now emerged as the floor leader we so badly need. Also agree about Sid. Coaches managed to make adjustments at the half that made it look like a completely different game. You can hate on Sid but I wouldn’t point to this game as the best example. Not only did we have those 13 pts down the stretch, we also scored 51 in the second half.

Javi: can’t say enough, took the game on his sholders. How long have we needed a pg who could do that?
Howell: if he isn’t starting, why isn’t he at least getting meaningful minutes? This kid has the potiential to be the real-deal. …and we definately need the real-deal.
Woods: is getting his stroke down. Good to see.
Vandenberg: I though he made a lot of mistakes, like the lane violation, stepping on the end line, etc. However the 11 boards were HUGE! We had 41 boards to Zona’s 30….when was the last time the Pack was that lopsided on the boards?

As far as Degand: please note, he was 0-1….in 9 minutes. No other stats, no boards, no steals, no nothing. Have to get more from the 2 guard than that. I suspect that explains his lack of pt.

  18. Rick 12/24/2009 at 9:24 AM #

NCSU is the special olympics of basketball.
    “At least we played hard”
Maybe we should give each player a participation trophy after each game to make sure they feel good about themselves.

Here are just a few of the problems I see with this “program”
    1) No talent. For such a great recruiter SL sure has a scarcity of talent.
    2) Mind boggling player minutes. Mays playing while Fegand sits. Painter playing after Howell was killing it. Playing a walk on.
    3) A complete lack of the basic fundamentals of basketball. No decent footwork on defense. No movement on offense. No boxing out.

No amount of talent will offset the abysmal coaching we have.

  19. drizzlewolf 12/24/2009 at 9:28 AM #

The Degand situation is a mystery to me. Also, shouldn’t the refs have stopped paly to check the clock at the end of the game even if we pulled a quick inbound? Not sure how that works. I was pleased with the adjustments down the stretch, but we really should’ve found a way to get that one. Also, not one mention of the clock situation the other night, even though they showed Wise hit that shot about 15 times last night.

  20. Daily Update 12/24/2009 at 9:30 AM #

Vandenberg was awesome. Maybe he should start at center and move T. Smith to power forward?

  21. StateFans 12/24/2009 at 9:35 AM #

^ I was thinking the same thing. But, Horner is a proven commodity and is a senior who deserves his minutes. If you don’t start Vandenberg then I think you at least bring him off the bench earlier and more often.

To be fair, I thought Javi clearly traveled on his spin around jumper late in the game. I went back again and looked at it and he took a couple of hops. But I will agree, the officiating down the stretch favored Arizona.

We missed Smith big-time, especially in the first half. That was one of the worst offensive halves of basketball I have ever seen. We were utterly clueless, throwing the ball away, and expecting our inexperienced big guys to work miracles.

CJ Williams is a real head scratcher. He did some good tonight, but far too much bad. I really don’t know why Sid insists on playing him the entire game.

And yes, the substitution pattern, after 11 games, is mind boggling.

I am very pleased with the effort from our players. However, we keep making the same mistakes over and over again. Don’t get too excited over the fact that we were competitive. We lost to a bad Arizona team that is rebuilding.

Horner should have been on the bench the last 3 minutes, he forced everything and hurt us bad. It just wasn’t his night and Lowe should adjusted for that.

Mays is a very good shooter but no pg! Find a way to incorporate his shooting more. Note to Mays, please stop being so timid! Shoot the ball.

Vande needs more minutes. His presence makes a difference.

Howell was night and day better than the wf game.

Still don’t know why Painter gets so many minutes? He is good player but really does not make much impact. Maybe he will come out of his shell.

Javi, even with his mistakes, proves to be worthy of his position. Great job tonight.

Wood will be good and CJ can be good.

    Whatever happened to Johnny Thomas?

After watching #14 last night, I am very concerned for his well being.

He played to well and I fully expect a degenerative bone disease diagnosis any day now.

He should quit while he’s ahead.

That was one of the oddest games I ever watched. In prior years we were the Cardiac Pack. Now we are officially the Jekyll and Hyde Pack…..

It was not only the contrast between the two half’s in scoring and defense:

In the first half, from tip-off for the first 5-6 minutes we looked poised, athletic, offensively astute, and defensively smothering: That’s when the Hyde Pack was playing: And least we forget, we were up 8 on Zona early…

Somewhere around the 7-8 minutes into the game, State subs Hyde for Jekyll; and then Kendell Smith sheds his suit and tie, for a NC State uniform, and BOOM, with have a Smith in the game…….but he’s the wrong color, and it does not help!!!!!

Because Jekyll plays like, well Jekyll: and we are; inept, confused and lost, and we are down 8 at the end of the half…..

Coming out of the locker room, to start the 2nd half, State puts Hyde back into the game. For the next 17 minutes, Hyde plays Zona to a standstill. Then with 3 minutes to go in the game, Hyde is benched, and Jekyll again takes the floor. For the next 2.3 minutes Jekyll sputters, fouls, misses shots, misses assignments, and brings a whole new meaning to the word inept……

Now with 38-39 seconds on the clock, and Jekyll down by 8, Hyde comes off the bench in Javi’s uniform, parts the Red Sea, turns loaves into baskets, and he is able to leap tall players with a single bound; and we have a tie game with mere seconds left……..And then the rest is relegated to history.

Love or hate the coach, the players, the offensive schemes, and defense; this is without a doubt the most dysfunctional and schizophrenic BB team to ever wear a State uniform. The Hyde team is as brilliant and fun to watch as any good well coached team: while the Jekyll Team drives one to excessive drink. Can this really be the same players occupying the same space and time???? Is it just a temporal anomoly?? Can Lowe coach or is it just that the players that just cannot execute on commmand?

Other than the factoid that we lost the game, I cannot help but feel that in one or more surreal moments, that Hyde at last was here to stay; or perhaps not……

I don’t know if the Jekyll NC State team will win another game. On the other hand, the Hyde team could go unbeaten the rest of the season.

The old sports adage: “Your never as good as look when your winning; and your never a bad as you look when your losing”, certainly applies to this team, but usually not moment to moment, in a single game.

I believe in this team, when Hyde is playing. I also believe in in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the tooth fairy.. And even though it is 9:20 AM EST I believe I’ll have another drink, and contemplate what this season may be like if we can keep Jykell from getting off the team Bus……
