Wolfpack advance to 9-3 riding strong 3-point shooting

It wasn’t very pretty after the NC State jumped out to an impressive 32-9 lead with 8:23 in the first half, but the Wolfpack managed to advance to 9-3 with a 68-52 win over Winthrop at the RBC Center.

The Pack found range again from the three-point line shooting 10 of 20 for the night from the arc; and a total of 52% from the field overall.

GoPack.com has a nice, quick game story that can be viewed here.

A balanced scoring attack – and a five-minute scoring spurt in the first half – allowed NC State to cruise by Winthrop Tuesday night, 68-52, at the RBC Center.

During the game’s most decisive streak, the Wolfpack outscored the Eagles 30-7, with most of the damage coming from the 3-point line.

Freshman Scott Wood started the streak by hitting a 3-pointer from the corner, and Tracy Smith followed with a traditional three-point play. Sophomore C.J. Williams and Wood hit back-to-back 3-pointers, to push State’s lead to 13-3, and Smith followed his own miss with a dunk.

Three players – one by Wood, two by senior Farnold Degand and two by senior Dennis Horner – hit 3-pointers on five consecutive possessions, increasing the lead to 21 points. And freshman Jordan Vandenberg hit a crowd pleasing left-handed hook shot with 8:23 remaining in the first half to give the Wolfpack its biggest lead of the night, 32-9.

[snip]

It was as good a half as Sidney Lowe’s team has played all year. Not only did the Pack make 15 of 30 field goals and 8 of 14 3-point attempts, it also dished out 13 assists on 15 field goals.

One observation I have is related to turnovers – while State committed 14 for the evening, the Wolfpack was only able to generate 7 turnovers from Winthrop. This differential coupled with State’s solid field goal shooting (limiting the need and opportunity for offensive rebounds) provided Winthrop ten more shot attempts than State generated for the evening.

Make no doubt about it, the Wolfpack is going to lose at least one game this year because of free throw shooting. Tonight, State shot an embarrassing 6 of 15 for only 40% from the free throw line.

State now turns its sites to three non-conference games in a six day span. After a New Year’s Eve game vs UNC Greensboro at the Greensboro Coliseum, State plays host to Florida in the RBC on Sunday at 3pm in what has become a very important game that could have post-season implications when March arrives.

If one were to presume wins over UNC-G, Holy Cross on (Jan 6) and North Carolina Central (Jan 30th) then the Pack would be 12-3 (not including the Florida result) before launching into the main part of the ACC schedule with another ‘must win’ hosting very beatable Virginia on Saturday, Jan 9th at noon. At the end of the year, 18 wins could be enough to earn an NIT berth; and non-conference wins over both Marquette and Florida could be differentiating factors for the Wolfpack.

Not the prettiest game, but they got it done. The backups did play significant minutes, probably a good move on Sid’s part to get them some time against a weaker opponent. Scott Wood finally found his shot again, which was nice. Tracy was getting double and triple teamed inside, looked a little rusty, but that will shake off hopefully by the UNC-G game. Howell did some good things, still made a few mistakes, but he is getting better. I still love the hustle plays that Davis makes, and he had a few tonight once again, just a fun guy to watch.

The entire team needs to work on FT shooting and interior and inside-out passing, just got sloppy at times.

Win is a win. Here’s to another one against UNC-G.

to be honest, we should of beat winthrop by 30 tonight
i think sidney is a horrible coach. his lineups are horrific. CJ should def not start. The starting lineup should be tracy, rich howell, horner, wood/davis, and the javi at the point, i cant wait till we get a competent coach in there

I guess it’s progress if there are complaints that the team didn’t win big enough. Yes?

Lee Fowler has placed State in one of the worst positions possible: it will be forced to fire one of its most beloved players ever. Make no mistake, this team is not good.

The team next year will stink.

Good job Lee. It was almost cosmic in design.

What is up with Wolfpack Post game interviews. Can we not get a microphone to the people asking questions? The conversation is all about hearing the coach answer a question and while he is answering, I find myself determining what was the question.

  6. wolfonthehill 12/30/2009 at 8:06 AM #

McCallum – I agree that this team is not good. Not so sure on the “next year will stink” thing. Depending on which players sign & qualify, we could have a top-tier freshman class, and college basketball over the past 20 years has shown that one such class can put a school in the top-25 in the blink of an eye.

Not saying that WILL happen – but it, without question, could. Don’t underestimate how damn good Harrow is – and what a massive impact a Jeff Teague-caliber point guard can have on a team.

I have to admit, as one sitting in the stands, I sometimes scratch my head at Lowes rotation and sub patterns. Last nite was one of them, just like at AZ allowing a walk on to play early and often rather than Howell or Davis.

Wood came out firing on all cylinders, Lowe pulled him. Javi had the team running the floor with a flow, Lowe pulled him. Horner was off again, seems he should play out of this small slump. Not. Horner and Wood barely saw the floor the second half. Mays played more over Javi, and the team suffered as we went into our infamous scoring drought early 2nd half with only 2 pts in the first 6 minutes.

To Sidney’s defense, whats up with all the timeouts for home games? Along with the sub patterns, its kills any flow or momentum the team has. Take the first half, there must have been 4 timeouts (mostly official) in a 4 minute span. Throw in a couple by Lowe and Winthrop, it was not only a killer for the team, it was for everyone sitting in the stands. And this was not a TV game but one timeout after another. There was even a TO with another after only 30 seconds of play. I heard several people yelling bout the official timeouts then….”Let’em Play” !

First game I have attended in several years. We should have torched this team. I didn’t realize Howell was so thick..I thought he would be more agile. I was impressed with Josh Davis and his hustle.

Wow, Sidney has several creampuff games in which he is able to get playing time for a lot of players that are new and need experience, and people complain. If Sid plays a walk-on “early and often” in an ACC game, I’ll question it, but this was Winthrop. Maybe he wanted to keep as many players rested as possible so we could really pour it on in the second half? If we make our free throws, we win this one by well over 20. And you complain about Sidney pulling the hot shooters, but we started the game on a 32-9 run I believe. Maybe a lot of that happened with the walk-on out on the floor, and that’s why he got so much playing time? Sometimes Sidney stays with strange lineups for a while, but I think that usually happens when that strange lineup is doing well. He’s actually staying with the hot hand in that case.

Funny how someone even had the audacity to say State won’t be good NEXT year, either. Guess you want Sid gone so bad, you want everyone to forget the blue-chippers he has coming in next year. Even they won’t even be good. Nice.

I’m pleasantly surprised at how GOOD we are. We’re better than we were last year. And that’s with the addition of several freshmen, still no great PG, and the exodus of our so-call “best” players from last year. We weren’t supposed to be better THIS year. But we are. We’re already winning games we would have easily lost last year. And look what we have coming in next year. I just don’t know how someone pretends to know (or even THINK) we’ll be bad again next year.

Our ability to put up points is so inconsistent, it makes our slow paced offense look dreadful. I’m worried that our offense isn’t going to be appealing to recruits, specifically Leslie, and he’ll opt to go to a more exciting and faster team like Kentucky.

  11. wolfmanmat 12/30/2009 at 8:52 AM #

This year we are only “mediocre” talent-wise. I have been “okay” with the in game coaching so far unlike alot of State fans. Sid is getting alot of players PT, which is important this year. He is giving all these kids a chance to develop, which will be crucial next year when Harrow, Luke and Lorenzo come in…and hopefully CJ. Point is, Sids got to let these kids play and develop. I mean CJ looks bad, but he was one of the top in-state recruits 2 years ago. Sid has to give him a chance to develop his talent. You can’t just give up on kids by not letting them play, particularly when the team as a whole is not great. We will be a better squad next year when we combine experience with young talent.

  12. wolfmanmat 12/30/2009 at 8:58 AM #

Bradley makes good points. We are much better than last year and we LOST what were thought to be our top 2 players. Also, look at our PG situation. IMO, Sid has made Javi an ACC point guard. Does anyone remember Javi as a frosh? He was AWFUL. Sid let him play and he developed. No matter what anyone says, Javi is one of the best PGs in the ACC. Put him on a team with scorers, like Harrow, Lorenzo, and he will be nasty. He has developed more than I thought he ever would. Things are looking up for Pack basketball; now we need Pack fans to start supporting the program.

  13. ncsufan13 12/30/2009 at 9:02 AM #

“now we need Pack fans to start supporting the program.”

Pack fans are supporting the basketball program. We bring in more revenue than everyone in the ACC but UNC and Duke. Its the management and coaches that aren’t fulfilling their end of the deal.

  14. Wulfpack 12/30/2009 at 9:25 AM #

We have improved, no doubt. Sid’s trying to figure out the best ways to use all of this young talent. Same thing is going on over at UNC. So I get it. I didn’t get to see or hear the game. Can someone tell me how Degand looked? Did he play early? Any reason why he was benched against Zona? And how did Mays look? If we are going anywhere this year (NIT or beyond), our collective guard play has got to improve.

  15. jbpackfan 12/30/2009 at 9:29 AM #

I had no problem with Sidney’s substitution pattern last night. Wood played the first 11 minutes of the game, so Lowe didn’t “pull him” as someone said. Davis came in and played around 2-3 minutes then Wood came back in. In the second half Wood and Horner sat b/c the lineup of Javi, Degand, Davis, Howell and Smith was the one putting the game away the last 10 minutes. And Sid didn’t put a walk-on in before anybody in the Arizona game- He put one it at the end of the first half for 2 minutes when the bigs were in foul trouble. Many criticisms of Lowe are reasonable, but nothing about his subs last night was really questionable.

  16. Clarksa 12/30/2009 at 9:30 AM #

I swear it won’t matter who the coach is…but the day we play for and win the NCAA tournament again…someone will bitch about how we won the game and that we didn’t win by enough.

  17. Pack05 12/30/2009 at 9:37 AM #

I am thankful for any win this year. The young guys are getting better and looking forward Harrow was awesome last night before getting sick.

  18. choppack1 12/30/2009 at 9:48 AM #

Glad to see Howell starting to emerge as a threat – his development is critical for any hopes of a decent season we have this year.

I think Degand had 20 minutes.

Looks like Wood is getting it together. Did Javi have 10 rebounds??

  19. LRM 12/30/2009 at 9:54 AM #

Wood & Howell finally seemed comfortable, which is encouraging.

Wood has one of the quickest releases I’ve ever seen, and Howell’s mechanics look ok, it just feels that he’s rushing things and that too often puts him out of position to finish the play.

  20. BassPacker 12/30/2009 at 9:54 AM #

I’m not complaining, just asking a question on the sub patterns. Some need to read more before they jump, no walk on played last nite, maybe he should have would have made more sense than during an important game like at Arizona. I’m all for experience, but when you have 9 or 10 scholarship players sitting on your bench in a key game, play one of them. Walk on’s should come on to mop up during a game like Winthrop.

Wood came in hot, made 3 straight threes. Everyone in the crowd was excited to see him getting his hot hand after struggling, specially with ACC schedule coming, Lowe pulled him, sit him whatever you want to call it. He saw little action after that. Confidence for a player is key, just like experience, specially a shooter like Wood. Horner didn’t play hardly any either, in that span, Pack was up 20 and Winthrop cut it to 8. The rotation was not working.

I like the way the team is playing, hussle and together. I’m have not said one negative thing about Lowe, infact, some guy behind be constantly yelled negative things toward Lowe last nite, I even said he should shut up.

  21. GoldenChain 12/30/2009 at 10:19 AM #

    I agree completely with Bradley.
What is it that some of you don’t understand about a 23 pt lead halfway through the 1st half?! Are you saying that you’ll only be happy if we crush someone by 40?! Heck Clemson is ranked and barely held on to beat SCState in the closing seconds.
As far as offense, when the starters were in during the 1st half we scored 41, our second highest of the season. We scored 51 in the second half at Zona. I’m not worried about the O as much as some of you guys are.
Unlike Duke, unx, etc we have a lot of new players to develope and rotations to explore and when you’re up by 23 in the 1st half it certainly is time to try some things that you won’t be able to do once conference play starts in earnist.
Sid sat Javi and Smith to put some pressure on the younger guys in the second half and frankly, Mays didn’t do well at all, just look at his line score! Sid put them back in and the next thing you know we were up by 20 again. Overall shooting was plenty OK despite a rough start to the 2nd half. Rebounds were better but yes, we’ll lose some close games if we don’t start hitting some FTs.

  22. ncsufan13 12/30/2009 at 10:26 AM #

^ I’m worried about the offense because we are last in the ACC in scoring, and in the bottom three in field goal and 3-point shooting percentage. We’re also at the bottom in free throw shooting. Its not like we’re the only one to rest starters when we’re playing against non-conference cupcakes. Our problems on offense are a trend that has developed over the season, last night didn’t deviate from that trend.

  23. BSIE80 12/30/2009 at 11:00 AM #

Good win. Great teamwork- sharing the ball. Need to change something in practicing FT’s (Tracy/Davis/Javi). I am sure they are practicing FT’s but they need to change their technique (physical/mental) or something.

Howell and Wood continue to improve because of playing time- building confidence. Howell actually did not shoot every time he touched it- which is a good improvement. If Howell can continue to improve, Horner will get less minutes because he struggles playing against quality PF, which he will see in the conference (Wake/UNC/Clemson/FS).

Javi had a good game. Face it- he will be inconsistent game to game, possession to possession, etc. We just have to live with it because he is the best option.

CJ still not getting enough offense- too unselfish. Just does not have the personality/drive. If he would just figure out that he can take his man off the dribble and get into the paint for the mid range shot- he could make major contributions and we could challenge for a 3rd-5th place in ACC. He still is the key to this team being the best they can be.

“I’m worried about the offense because we are last in the ACC in scoring, and in the bottom three in field goal and 3-point shooting percentage…….Our problems on offense are a trend that has developed over the season”

13, this is why its hard for me to take your negativity seriously. The 1st 6 games of the year we averaged 63.8ppg, the last 6 games we averaged 72.0ppg.
Using 72ppg of the last 6 games we’d be 9th, in the ACC in scoring. Nothing to write home about but not …dead last.
On 3pt shooting, the 1st 3 games we shot 33% (14/42) but the last 3 games we shot 39.3%. 39.3% would put us….4th in the ACC.
So as far as these “trends” you mention, the “trend” is that we are getting better offensively.

Oh and lastly, we are not at the bottom in FT %, we’re 9th, which I agree is not nearly good enough, especially with how well we’ve shot the 3 in the last few games.

  25. ncsufan13 12/30/2009 at 12:43 PM #

^ Well you don’t have to take anything I say seriously. Thats just how I feel about where our team is at.

If you want more evidence about our poor scoring though, just look at the games we’ve played against important opponents. Against Marquette, Northwestern, Arizona, and Wake Forest we managed to put up 77, 53, 74, and 59 points. We’re the only team in the ACC that doesn’t have a game in which we’ve scored 80 or more points. Those numbers are wildly inconsistent and are hardly encouraging considering the competition we’re going to playing soon in the ACC.
