Wake Forest 67 NC State 59

State lost to Wake last night in a game that, unfortunately, played out almost exactly as I expected. (Link to game story) The Las Vegas line favored Wake by 9.5 and the Demon Deacons won by 8.

The following sums up the game in short order:

The ACC’s top rebounding team held a 48-40 advantage on the glass, shot 42.6 percent and led for nearly the whole way but needed to hold off a second-half comeback bid by the Wolfpack to wrap up its fourth straight win.

Javier Gonzalez scored 18 points, one shy of a personal best, while freshman Scott Wood added a season-high 11 points and Tracy Smith had 11 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with 5:28 remaining for N.C. State (8-2, 0-1).

The Wolfpack were 6-for-21 from 3-point range and turned it over 16 times yet nearly rallied from 14 points down. The Wolfpack made it a four-point game with 14 1/2 minutes left before Wake Forest pulled away with a 14-4 run.

For the game, the Wolfpack shot the following:
.339 overall from the field (21-61)
.286 from behind the arc (6-21)
.579 on free throws (11-19)

Backing the Pack has his statistical analysis up (Link).

In addition to his comments that follow I would add that I would have liked to have seen a few less offensive rebounds for Wake but I appreciate Coach Lowe trying out the zone (that ended up being poorly executed).

Opportunity was there–Wake clicked in fits and starts but didn’t play well at the offensive end overall and averaged less than a point per possession. But State couldn’t shoot for shit, hitting 28.6% of its threes and 36.6% of its twos. After Dennis Horner cut the Deacs’ lead to four, the Pack missed several chip shots on ensuing possessions, let the Deacs score an easy put back after a missed free throw, and they never seriously threatened again.

NC State’s bench scored seven points on 2-15 shooting.

A few individual story lines worth noting:

* Scott Wood had a ‘break-out’ performance and really looked good on both ends of the court.

* Jordan Vandenberg provided some solid minutes in the middle as Richard Howell and DeShawn Painter continue to be very inefficient with their opportunities. Vandenberg logged 11 minutes while Painter & Howell logged 11 minutes between the two of them.

* Without Javi Gonzalez‘s offense, there is no telling where this team would be. Wake’s first big run of the first half happened while Javi was on the bench.

* The boxscore has Josh Davis at 13 minutes; but that doesn’t feel long enough. I think he should have been on the floor longer last night.

* Tracy Smith came public with his thoughts of the officiating (Link). Smith was in foul trouble on Sunday night on some calls that were very frustrating. Equaling frustrating were two blatant Wake fouls against Javi Gonzalez that got no call and led to five Wake Forest points in transition. That was really tough.

Current Position
For what it’s worth, the 8-2 Wolfpack currently hold the #44 spot in the RPI having played the 93rd toughest schedule in the country. State has the following five games before launching into our ACC Schedule with a must-win home game against Virginia on January 9th:

Dec 23 @ Arizona
Dec 29 Winthrop
Dec 31 @ UNC Greensboro
Jan 3 Florida
Jan 6 Holy Cross

* A 4-1 record against this slate would create a very surprising 12-3 record before the bulk of the ACC.

* A 3-2 record against this slate would effectively wipe out any hope for a surprising NCAA Tournament berth and generate an 11-4 record, which is at least one game better than most pre-season prognostications would have had.

A decent way to watch Pack games is to DVR them. When State goes down by 10 watch it on ffwd until the Pack pulls to within 5 and then watch it regular speed. Repeat this process again when they go down by 10. I was only watching the Wake game for about 20 minutes using this method. It keeps you from being so emotionally tied up that you are completely pissed after taking a beating. Maybe one day we will be good enough to not have to watch it like this.

“Wolfpack basketball is like like having all your teeth knocked out but still smiling because you can’t wait to see what the tooth fairy will leave under your pillow tomorrow morning.”

    Good one 61packer.

I’m not a Basketball expert, but what I sat through in WS showed countless deficiencies. I was with a Wake crowd, but we were all amazed at the seeming lack of any attempt by either team to have some plays that looked like they had practiced or understood. It looked like just drive the lane, and when nothing seems possible just go, oops and fumble it off into a crowd of the opposition, or bobble it out of bounds.

When we did get to the hoop, I can’t count the number of shots that just clanked off the board, not touching the rim at all. No touch, strength, or ability to take it to the hole with authority.

We had at least two times where we didn’t box out on Wake ft’s and they rebounded and put it back up for a score.

Perhaps the officiating was a tad questionnable, but Smith did not impress at all. Degand is pitiful, of little use. Howell looks like he eats at Sids table, lots of starch, gravy, biscuits, etc. He’s a load. Wood played well, as I thought Vandenberg did. They are too young yet, I believe, to make up for the lack of performance of the veterans.

We are still a project, and I believe we can improve. It’s time for the staff to start developing what we have, and we can’t whine about what we don’t have. It is what it is. We’re not good enough to compete at the top of our conference, but we surely should be better than what we are projected to be. This is a game we could have won with a little smarter play, and a lot more effort and coaching. We will need lots of both for anything good to happen the rest of the way.

^^”Did anyone else notice that all the freshman’s jersey has their name spelled in a straight line and the other player’s names are in an arc.”

I noticed!! For the love of *&^%, can we get uniforms that are “uniform?”

That is noticeable, and it looks unprofessional.

We did not play a good game, but we didn’t quit. Wake’s size bothered us. I think we should have played Vandenburg a little more. He had two blocks, but definitely needs time.

Look, anyone still blaming Herb for Sids failures are lying to themselves. Sid recruited this team. Sid recruited Lo Brown that did not qualify. Has anyone noticed all the talent coming out of the Raleigh area lately that is deciding to NOT attend NC State? Sid is the only ACC coach to ever lose a basketball game to East Carolina, EVER! Sid nearly lost at home to Elon. Yes, ELON. We have been at the bottom of the ACC since sid took over and we are projected to be last again. As long as you remember this you won’t be too disappointed as Sid lives up to his own expectations. Sid will get this year and next to prove what he can do with his incoming freshman. So far his incoming freshman are not ACC calibur players. This is our reality.

There seems to be a lot of talk about a “success” for this team. I agree that the NIT would be an IMPROVEMENT over the past miserable performances but not a SUCCESS. I guess I am just so old school that I believe that if you don’t make the NCAA tournament the season is a FAILURE. I don’t care what the underlying reasons may be. There are 65 teams that make it and I could care less about anything that falls short of this. So we are 0-1 right now. Let’s see how we do in the 16 game season…you know the one that really matters. This OOC play is secondary to that.

I agree with packmentality. A successful year is a trip to the big dance. I remember the year after the 74 championship and NCSU actually turned down the NIT when we did not make the NCAA tournament. Now our sites are set on hopefully making the NIT. My, how far we have fallen. I truly hope Sid succeeds because if he succeeds, NCSU succeeds. I know he has this year and next, that’s pretty much a given. This is his team and lets see if he can coach them up because we’ve got what we’ve got.
