The ‘Degand Difference’ – State wins on road vs Big East’s Marquette

NC State 77
Marquette 73

NC State avenged last year’s painful last-second loss to Marquette with a resouding second half performance to advance to a surprising 6-1 record this year. State’s win ended Marquette’s 24 consecutive home win streak vs non-conference opponents.

With no disrespect to the performance delivered by Tracy Smith, Javi Gonzalez, Dennis Horner and Josh Davis (9 pts; 6 rebs; 2 steals in 16 mins), the difference in this game was the play of Farnold Degand who made his 2009-2010 debut for the Wolfpack. Degand entered the game with just a few minutes to go in the first half and the Wolfpack’s struggling offense started to find its footing. State ultimately scored only 25 points in the first half and went into halftime down 11 points with things looking bleak.

But in the second half, Josh Davis helped spark a defensive turnaroud and the Wolfpack successfully leveraged the offensive options provided by Degand for an explosion unlike anything we’ve seen in a long time. The result was 17 second half points for Tracy Smith and a hot Javi Gonzalez that ended the afternoon with 15 as the Wolfpack scored 52 points in the second half (despite missing a ton of free throws).

After committing eight turnovers in the first 15 minutes of the game with Julius Mays flanking a shaky Javi Gonzalez, Degand’s sudden presence served to secure the ball and balance the floor and create options for the red & white.

If we may toot our own horn for a moment — SFN has been stressing the absence of Farnold Degand in recent posts, going so far as to call out Degand in the title of our blog entry following State’s loss to Northwestern. (Link)

Tonight was a night when you could really see where Farnold Degand could help this team. His athleticism, length, quickness and shooting ability are all superior to those of Julius Mays. I love Julius Mays and appreciate his contributions to this team. But that doesn’t make my statement about Degand less true. Who knows the impact Degand could have had on both ends of the court if he was playing.

Of course, nothing is easy with the Wolfpack; leading by double digits with less than two minutes remaining, State proceeded to miss a multitude of free throws and allow Marquette a ton of free points that ultimately made the game much closer than it had to be. After leading 63-49 (our largest lead) with 5:28 remaining, we converted only 6-of-15 from the free throw line, which allowed Marquette to cut our lead to four. For the afternoon, State as only 10 of 20 from the free throw line; but was 7 of 12 from the three point line for 58% after Tuesday night’s miserable 11% vs Northwestern.

As one of our community members highlighted – ‘the difference between a Mays/Williams backcourt and a Javi/Degand backcourt was roughly 22 points today’ – which includes the Wolpack’s meltdown at the end of the game. At the two minute mark of the game, the point differential was approximately 30 points in Mays ~15 minutes vs Degand’s ~22 minutes.

We had a great conversation during the game in this entry if you would like to review the blow by blow.

Don’t look now…but NC State is building quite a nice little body of work for the year. Before today, the Wolfpack had played the 39th toughest schedule in the country and was sitting at #29 in the RPI. Winning on the road at (currently #66) Marquette certainly won’t serve to hurt State’s positioning. Of course it is grossly early in the year, but with solid non-conference opportunities like Arizona and Florida remaining on the horizon, NC State is at least currently ‘playing for something’ — which many people did not expect to be the case.

^ Yep, Davis is the surprise player that Sidney Lowe said he would be: athletic, determined and a solid presence on the floor.

This is a solid win for a team that was expected to be 0-7 at this point.

I kid about 0-7, but really, no one has much expectation for this team, and they are playing much, much better than anyone expected. They will still be an up and down squad in my opinion, but the “ups” are a lot higher than anyone I know predicted.

At halftime, all I had seen of this team was the sluggish performance against NW and a crappy 20 minutes against Marquette and I thought, ‘wow, we suck.’ I loved the second half, though. That was the best half of ball (or at least the best 18 minutes, until we started missing all the free throws) I can remember in a long time. It was almost like everything we did worked. If we would have nailed all of our free throws we would have scored more in that half than we did in 40 minutes against Auburn and NW.

I’m happy for Javi, who we all left for dead a year ago this time. (I was stunned by how horrible he was early last year.) And I’m happy for Josh Davis, though it is painful to watch him shoot free throws. If he keeps playing and progressing this year, he may turn out to be the gem of this class.

Someone please make sure Degand keeps doing his homework. We need him on the floor. And Mays, well, I don’t know what to make of him. He shouldn’t be playing the 1. Maybe the 2. He can stroke it, but he’s so slow bringing the ball up the court that we need someone else doing that. Half the time he just backs it up, using his ass to keep the defender from stealing the ball. That’s no way to run an offense.

Defense, Defense, Defense… that’s what allowed us to hang 50+ on them in the 2nd half…. defensive intensity not only creates easy opportunities (on steals/deflections), but it also has a huge effect on offense intensity as well. If we continue to play with that kind of enthusiasm on the defensive end of the court, the offense will continue to run smoother… damn that 2nd half was fun to watch!!! Wood should have definitely been on the court for that last 2 minutes… I understand him wanting Davis in there for rebounding, but them scoring was of NO concern to us… what was a concern for us was MAKING our FTs. I’m sure Sid will sit down with the film of this game and make the necessary adjustments the next time that opportunity arises, which hopefully… is MORE often than not. Sid once again made some key halftime adjustments and the shots were falling which of course makes any coach look good.
GO PACK, that was exactly what we’re all wanting to see!

FWIW…as of Sunday morning…NC State is currently ranked 9th in the RPI. We have seven games remaining before getting into the bulk of the ACC season

Before we really get into the meat of the ACC, our particular easy games – Ga Southern, UNC-G, Elon, Winthrop, Holy Cross – are more than well balanced by games @ Wake, @ Arizona, and vs Florida who will all probably be Top 60ish teams.

So…if we can find a way to win just six of these next eight games we should feel ok. If we can win more than six games then fans shouldn’t be embarrassed to dream of reaching the NCAA Tournament bubble.

And, Wake Forest’s RPI skyrocketed after their win at Gonzaga.

My total win number for ‘acceptability / expectation’ remains 15 total wins with at least four/five wins in the ACC. It is nice to be making a move towards this.

My take on all/most of the free throws missed were that the guys thought we had the win (up by 10) in hand and they just didn’t concentrate. They really didn’t seem to have a sense of urgency with the 10pt lead. I’m hoping this won’t be a future problem.

Agree with wolfmanmat – Davis was HUGE in this game, and he’s quickly turning into a great find by Sid. Totally under the radar, but an immediate contributor.

loller what’d ya delete my post for?

I deleted a childish post that served no purpose other than calling out another State fan. If that was your’s, then you should know that we don’t put up with that type of nonsense around here.

State played a basketball game? I read the N&O and Carowhina is all I see. Was State’s game in the paper, maybe in the back, next to the cars sales or fishing stories? Also DG’s (Carolina’s always the best- show)between 12:00-3:00 locally makes me want to vomit-he constantly lie’s for Carosuxiea on everything and everyone else is a waste of time. The local media suck on a regular basis. What can I say = 28-27 Butchslap bit&%es and 77-73 NCSU over MU = to the (ya’ll want win 5 games all year). GREAT WIN SID – KEEP PLAYING HARD GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To Sid and TOB just keep winning – they can’t keep you down if you kick their a$$ on a regular basis-media or no media.

So it’s not okay to call another “fan” out… but it’s okay to talk trash about the team, coach and players when you’ve only watched one game, which was by all accounts our worst game played all year? That’s acceptable?

One post is discussing a horrible performance by the team/coach and the other serves no purpose other than to start a flame war. If I left your post up, then the next horrible performance by State start the finger pointing back towards you. So those posts are not going to be allowed.

If you think that someone has crossed the line when discussing the team, then send an e-mail to the admistrator with a link to the comment. Also point it out in THAT THREAD. We don’t necessarily catch everything that exceeds the point of common decency…but we do try and keep the conversations here on an adult level.

  12. packmanzz 12/06/2009 at 5:13 PM #

Correct me if I’m wrong, but you have threads to discuss the other game. This wasn’t about discussing the other game. His posts were not about the other game. His posts were trying to extrapolate from OUR WORST GAME OF THE YEAR, that the team is not talented, they don’t hustle, they’re stupid and the coach is incompetent. That’s not “discussing a horrible performance by the team/coach”, that is trying to provide DESTRUCTIVE criticism. Which is something that a fan does not do.

And what are you talking about?!!? It’s okay to rip another poster as long as they’re being positive and you’re being negative.

I usually just delete entire posts when they break our rules. This makes the second one of your’s that I’ve edited. I wouldn’t recommend betting alot of money that I will edit a third.

There’s nothing wrong with being either positive or negative. Too often, people overlook all of the evidence from the “other” side. It’s completely fair to comment when a poster makes those types of claims.

good win. I’m still a little concerned about our ability to put together two good halves of basketball. I think once we have seen that once, and then consistently, Sid will have accomplished something. We would get killed by the upper tier of our conference with a 8 minute scoring drought, as we had in the first halves. Also, enough dog piling on Mays, he is one of our few guards, has experience, and will eventually find his stroke and be a solid sub. I want to see CJ Williams slash to the basket one time (don’t be shy CJ, we need ya!) Also I’m looking forward to the maturation of Painter and Howell, because once they get a better feel for the college game, their *productive* PT will be vital to keeping Smith fresh.

What can you say about Davis besides Mr. Intangibles. One of the nice things about going 9-10 deep in your roster is players can go all out on defense in the time they are in. Now that Degand is back we can have at least one point guard in the game being the “cool head” and settling the guys down into the offense, instead of losing their composure like we have seen a little bit.

We have established that these guys are not lazy…fantastic…but now watch for the team to really start gelling over the next 6 or so games, the younger guys with more experience and roles becoming cemented. Now that we have two serviceable, quick guards out there, good things “can” happen. If we can shoot jumpers at a respectable percentage, which we know the likes of Horner, Wood, Mays, Gonzalez, Williams, and Degand are capable of, we would have a very balanced attack on offense, to go with our menacing, active attack on defense. We just need to do these things consistently, in order to make any real noise this year. But forgo any attention to post-season aspirations, especially this early… baby steps.

Just keep the expectations in check guys…let’s find a way to win the next 2 games (hopefully easily) and take our chances getting the game at either Wake or Zona (obviously would prefer to beat Wake).

  15. gcpack 12/06/2009 at 11:40 PM #

I’s like to know if anymore of you are concerned about the lack of coverage by the Raleigh N & 0 (Wake county Charlotte Observer)on our win over Marquette. I don’t expect the moon but a significant win on the road over a Big East team by State should not get put behind the SEC championship game and a local high school football game on the first page of the sports section.

This goes along with the media picking State last in the conference, frequently alluding to how bad State is then criticizing the fans because they don’t show up.

Just like the Eagle’s song “kick’em when they’re up, kick’em when they’re down”.

Anybody agree that this is another unnecessary slight by the N & O over it’s hometown university in choosing to emphasize the SEC championship and a high school game? I mean who knew that Raleigh was so close to Nashville, TN and Athens, Ga.?

  16. VaWolf82 12/06/2009 at 11:58 PM #

Just like the Eagle’s song “kick’em when they’re up, kick’em when they’re down”.

    Don Henley – Dirty Laundry

I prefer to wait until the media says something stupid, inaccurate, or both before I jump on the MSM. History suggests that you won’t have to wait very long until the next time.

We’ll get the press when we deserve it. We may have to “deserve” it a little more than boys in blue do, but if we become relevant again we’ll get it.

I think our kenpom rating was #61 when I last checked it last night. This, of course, places us squarely on the bubble.

It’s a bit of good news/bad news kind of thing. The bad news is that we’re #61 (which leaves us on the outside looking in.) The good news it that this is supposed to be more predictive than others…

  19. ldr of the pk 75 12/07/2009 at 11:17 AM #

gcpack- down here, we could call it the Mecklenberg N&O. Point being if UNC plays we’re an afterthought. The papers generally suck in their bias against State. Someone made the good point earlier though. Just go out and kick their ass like the football team does, and that will do all your talking for you.

Nice win by the Wolfpack. We’re young, it’s early, but perhaps we’re just getting around to turning the corner. With just a few early conf. wins, I think we would gain some huge confidence and position ourselves well.

Marquette may not be a basketball giant, but this was still a great win for Sid and the Pack. I was glad to see us finally end the shooting slump that cost us a chance to beat Northwestern.

I’m not expecting great things just yet, but I am getting anxious to see another game and another game and so on… our guys seem to be on the same page now. Chemistry problems seem to be a thing of the past. I’m starting to believe our guys when they talked about the selfish players from last year. It’s premature to expect or predict this, but if we end up having a good year with this team of mostly freshmen and the same PGs we had last year, one could make the case that our problem last year was mainly with Herb’s leftovers. I’m not making that claim yet. We’ll have to see how things go the rest of the year first. And if that’s the case, maybe Sid gets a little more of a pass for the last couple of years. Maybe (just maybe) it wasn’t all his fault. But maybe (just maybe) Sid has also learned a little about college coaching over the last three years. We knew there’d be a learning curve when we hired a guy with no college coaching experience. Maybe (hopefully) Sid is coming around a little bit, too. It’s probably a little of both.

Well, the N&O is written by Carolina faithful…the advantages of a liberal arts education. That said, I can’t blame the N&O for writing on Carolina; they have been THE program to sell over the last 15 years and newspapers are in business to “sell.” Hopefully Sid has this team turned around now that all the “bad seeds” have been outed. I think NCAA tourney is not too much to hope for at this point. We still have a long way to go, but we now have a marquee out of conference win to go along with quality wins versus Auburn and Akron. We need to beat either Florida or Arizona, but our prospects look much brighter than prior to the season. I think Sid and any knowledgable State fan would/should be happy with a 8-1 start given the preseason prognosis for this team.
