State @ Wake

NC State travels to Wake Forest tonight for a ‘big’ game for both teams. Although this is a conference game, it is one of three defining games the Wolfpack will play – Wake, @ Arizona, vs Florida – before the conference season kicks into high gear in January.

Rush the Court is going to “Cover it Live”

Both Wake Forest and NC State enter ACC conference play as relative unknowns: sure, the Demon Deacons beat Gonzaga in Spokane, but what are we to make of their double-digit homecourt loss to William & Mary that same week? Similarly, NC State’s victory over Marquette on the road was noteworthy, but their less than impressive victory in their last game over Elon, one of the weakest teams in the nation, has Wolfpackers scratching their heads. Wake enters Sunday’s game at 7-2, riding on the back of Al-Farouq Aminu (15.9 ppg, 10.4 rpg). Ishmael Smith has increased his production for the Deacs, but the true compliment to Aminu this season has been freshman guard C.J. Harris’ shooting, bringing 12.4 ppg while shooting 53% from the floor. State will rely on Tracy Smith and his 18.3 ppg and 9.4 rpg to go toe-to-toe with Wake Forest’s Aminu. In the end though, offensive rebounds could be the factor in this matchup: neither team has shot the ball well this season, Wake is the tallest team in the nation and rebounds accordingly, while NC State has been below average on the defensive glass. Both Dino Gaudio and Sidney Lowe are under pressure from the fanbase to produce after underperforming last year. For both teams, a win in Winston-Salem would be a good place to start for proving they belong in the top half of the ACC.

I guess the thought about the “couple of threes” has been debunked.

Yeah, it’s like our staff had a complete regime change or something… I don’t know why we don’t have top 10 recruits right now!

I just read this on the monkey board. Very true.

“I just noticed another sign of the incompetency that pervades every nook & cranny of the NCSU athletic department:

The names on the back of the jerseys: the letters are on a curved path except for the freshmen, whose names are stitched on in a linear fashion. Nice consistency!”

Someone here (LRM?) commented on the names early on.

You can look at the bench… I don’t even think our players believe they can win by now (say what you want as a spectator, but players shouldn’t believe they’ve lost until it is physically impossible). If they feel demoralized, maybe they should realize that you can’t make silly (frustrating) mistakes and still play competitively. Going to keep the score ticker off and spend some time with the family. Good job, Wake. Hope you don’t think you can play like this against quality teams and win, though!

I want to know who evaluated CJ Williams, Johnny Thomas, CJ Mays, and Richard Howell and decided they were scholarship material.

Sorry, I watched the first half at my Dad’s house. He refused to watch the second half because we looked so awful. So I missed all of the early jocularity.

    BTW VA,
I sent you an email. Did you see it?

I am guessing the same coach that is able to spot all that talent (i.e. Davis).

IMO SL’s recruiting is over rated.

    THATS A DANG FOUL!

You can say what you want, this is a game we could have won, all negative aside. Wake is not that good, we beat ourselfs with poor shooting on the floor and line. Its not over yet.

    OK, its over now.

Not until you said something because I took off early Friday afternoon. I’ll send you something back tonight.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I’m aghast at our skill level.

  14. VaWolf82 12/20/2009 at 10:32 PM #

    Wake is not that good

I’ll agree with that…but I still didn’t expect State to cover the point spread.

Hopefully we can slip into the NIT. OUr rebounding and shooting are awful. At least Wood has finally done something. Vandenburg was laughable except for a nice block. Howell was pretty much laughable too.

  16. Dogbreath 12/20/2009 at 10:35 PM #

Until proven otherwise, I shall now refer to Howell simply as “Geth.”

  17. BassPacker 12/20/2009 at 10:36 PM #

We beat Wake at home….mark it.

“Not to beat a dead horse, but I’m aghast at our skill level.”

I have said it before. We have at best one ACC level player.

Next year we have 3 and two of them are freshmen. Next year is not going to be that much better. We are awful.

There is no development in this program.

I never have turned off a televised state game in my 40 years as a alumni and serious supporter.

However, I just can’t watch this crap much longer. I basically started watching the panther game.

Absolutely horrid play. Who recruited and is coaching these guys. Our defense seems as bad as it was last year.

“We beat Wake at home….mark it.”

    What year?

This team isn’t ’93 or ’95 or ’01 bad (yet), but it’s certainly got the potential.

  21. Rick 12/20/2009 at 10:39 PM #

    “What year?”

    Before 2027 mark it.

“I want to know who evaluated CJ Williams, Johnny Thomas, CJ Mays, and Richard Howell and decided they were scholarship material.”

Williams and Mays seem to be wasted scholarships. Thomas has been plagued by injuries, so who knows what might’ve been with him. I don’t think it was Sid’s master plan to have been blow out both knees.

Howell’s coming off knee surgery and couldn’t even practice with the team in October and part of November. I have a feeling that’s effecting his ability to contribute right now.

Anyway, whatever joy I had about the Marquette win has been rudely brought back down to Earth. We suck. Our offense struggled to get a shot off against Wake Forest.

Funny the announcers were commenting about the pressure to win at mid-majors. If only we had such demanding standards for our coaches…sigh…

  24. Dogbreath 12/20/2009 at 10:47 PM #

The 93, 95, and 01 teams would have drubbed the team I saw tonight.

  25. EdMar 12/20/2009 at 10:49 PM #

We are as bad as advertised! We play the same way we have the last three years. The guards pass the ball around to each other most of the time just barely hanging on for control and at the last second we try a desperation shot or the guards drive way too far in and find themselves trying to make a lay up amongst the trees.

Another “wait until next year” season.
