State @ Wake

NC State travels to Wake Forest tonight for a ‘big’ game for both teams. Although this is a conference game, it is one of three defining games the Wolfpack will play – Wake, @ Arizona, vs Florida – before the conference season kicks into high gear in January.

Rush the Court is going to “Cover it Live”

Both Wake Forest and NC State enter ACC conference play as relative unknowns: sure, the Demon Deacons beat Gonzaga in Spokane, but what are we to make of their double-digit homecourt loss to William & Mary that same week? Similarly, NC State’s victory over Marquette on the road was noteworthy, but their less than impressive victory in their last game over Elon, one of the weakest teams in the nation, has Wolfpackers scratching their heads. Wake enters Sunday’s game at 7-2, riding on the back of Al-Farouq Aminu (15.9 ppg, 10.4 rpg). Ishmael Smith has increased his production for the Deacs, but the true compliment to Aminu this season has been freshman guard C.J. Harris’ shooting, bringing 12.4 ppg while shooting 53% from the floor. State will rely on Tracy Smith and his 18.3 ppg and 9.4 rpg to go toe-to-toe with Wake Forest’s Aminu. In the end though, offensive rebounds could be the factor in this matchup: neither team has shot the ball well this season, Wake is the tallest team in the nation and rebounds accordingly, while NC State has been below average on the defensive glass. Both Dino Gaudio and Sidney Lowe are under pressure from the fanbase to produce after underperforming last year. For both teams, a win in Winston-Salem would be a good place to start for proving they belong in the top half of the ACC.

So many things going wrong, don’t know where to begin

“BTW Mays should not see the court. He should be a towel waver.”

Rick, he wouldn’t do much waving.

“Can anyone give me a reason why he just stayed there and waited for Wake defenders to get on him before attempting a basket?”

B/C he’s rushed his shot a few times and been blocked within a few feet of the basket. So he waited for the contact this time and got blocked anyway. But yeah, don’t think he realized how open he was but that’s what good defense does to you…get’s you out of your game.

This is a game Pack can win.

Obviously we are watching different games.

    1-11. DAMN

I was stating that on the overall play at the time, 😉

“Rick, he wouldn’t do much waving.”

Can he do it with his back to the court?

Has any 6-8 forward actually decreased his likelihood of scoring the closer he gets to the basket more than Howell?

  9. Rick 12/20/2009 at 10:07 PM #

    Howell is sllllllloooooowwwwwwwww.

I wonder what a nonbias observer would say about this game/team

    Out of control

I think that bank-shot was the kiss of death

“Obviously we are watching different games.”

Disagree. If you are watching the game, it’s obvious that Wake keeps receding back into those Herb Sendek-esqe droughts of talent where they will suck terribly for short periods of time. There is no reason why we couldn’t hit a couple threes and get back in here. Despite the bad shooting, we’ve turned around and hit a few in a row so… no reason we can’t win other then more boneheaded errors. At this point in time, it seems to be less of an issue of what is being taught and more of an issue of how the “boots on the ground” are executing.

Yea, he was looking for the “bank”….Not.

It was a game we could have won at the 12 minute mark. Now, crank the bus.

Who are the people that have been telling me JG is a good guard?
He was good against scrub teams. Against speed he gets his lunch stolen and he has to look at the ref for help.

Rick, I don’t recall anyone saying Javi was a good PG aside from being a good “fill-in” for a better PG. He’s solid for short periods of time, not for a whole game. Unfortunately, he’s the best we got until we can get these kids in uniform that have signed LOI.

” There is no reason why we couldn’t hit a couple threes and get back in here.”

Other than the fact that we cannot shoot, you are correct.

There is no reason why we couldn’t hit a couple threes and get back in here.

The chances of that happening are about the same as The Diary of Anne Frank having a happy ending. (Was just checking the TV listings to see what else is on.)

This game is on auto pilot. Wake holds the ball for the east win.

“There is no reason why we couldn’t hit a couple threes and get back in here.”

If by couple, you mean four, then I agree.

    Panthers beating Vikes.

The “wolverine” is not in the game tonite, whats up with Horner.

I hate when they call us “CAROLINA STATE” !!!!

Blanket statements like “aside from the fact we can not shoot” doesn’t really make a lot of sense when you look at the shooting at the end of the 1st half.

I don’t think the Bank shot was the death nail. I think our response to it (that turn over against Wake turning into an offensive foul against us) was the death nail. No reason we couldn’t/can’t win the game aside from not being able to play smart and limit individual (not team) mistakes, making turnovers equate points.

EDIT: LRM, when I posted that, we were down by 9. A couple threes (meaning 2) would bring it into a more competitive window.

“There is no reason why we couldn’t hit a couple threes and get back in here.”

Except you have to be good to make those. But yeah, if we made every shot we took we would have won the NC last year.

  24. inhoc... 12/20/2009 at 10:15 PM #

LOL yeah just hit a couple 3s, no big.

  25. Dogbreath 12/20/2009 at 10:16 PM #

I just can’t believe how low our skill level is. Even during the Robinson years we had one or two guys who occasionally got hot and kept us competitive.

This team has no skill whatsoever. Its like our staff went on a mission to find 13 guys who have a basketball body, but have zero skills.
