State can’t stay undefeated – can Farnold Degand get is *(#&$ together to help this team?

In relatively even match-ups on the hardwood, one can often point to a single statistic that makes a difference in a one-game battle. This pretty much describes NC State’s loss tonight at the RBC Center to the Northwestern Wildcats.

For the night, NC State shot a putrid 2 of 18 for 11% from the three-point line with Javi Gonzalez hitting the Wolfpack’s only two threes (2 of 6)

It doesn’t get any more simple than that.

The Wolfpack missed wide open looks…half contested looks…quick ball reversed looks…you name the look, the Wolfpack missed it.

Additionally, our (expected) weak guard play had a difficult time (1) creating opportunities for the offense against the Wildcat’s extended zone defense and (2) struggled to control Northwestern’s point guard, Michael Thompson who finished the night with 22 points and was able to easily create/convert drives for key buckets in the last five minutes of the game.

Tonight was a night when you could really see where Farnold Degand could help this team. His athleticism, length, quickness and shooting ability are all superior to those of Julius Mays. I love Julius Mays and appreciate his contributions to this team. But that doesn’t make my statement about Degand less true. Who knows the impact Degand could have had on both ends of the court if he was playing.

Boxscore

Again, it really doesn’t get any more simple than this.

The Wolfpack falls to a respectable 5-1 for the season, at least one game better than most fans expected at this point of the season. State has another important out of conference clash on Saturday at 3pm on the road at Marquette. The Golden Eagles are a surprising 6-1 to start the season, losing by one point to Florida State in the finals of the Old Spice Classic on Sunday. (Link)

Unfortunately, we couldn’t gain any momentum. As soon as it looked like we were going to start a run, NW would hit a 3 or kill our momentum in some way. I don’t want to over simplify, but I think the game boiled down to uncharacteristically bad shooting on our part (c’mon even a blind squirrel can typically find more than 2 nuts) versus a team who couldn’t miss. Are there other aspects of the game (urgency, Mays looking scared, etc) that need to change, of course. But I think that even with our deficencies, if we hit our shots, we are going to win some games that we shouldn’t.

imawolf- i agree with your statement- “One thing that did bother me greatly was the top of the key cross court passing”

This could be remedied with more ball fakes… ie- guys pumping the ball in one direction and then quickly firing it in another… this was also mentioned by J. Williams last night, as he noticed the same thing you did.

Ten things I have to admit to feel better.

1. I like & want Lowe to be successful at NCSU
2. Year 4 and we have very little talent/athletes
3. Year 4 and still no ACC quality PG (seriously, every division II
team we have played has better guard play…how does this happen?)
4. Year 4 and our offense has no organization.
5. Year 4 and we are still playing wait until next year game (3 years
now).
6. SOL if we drop Lowe this year because we would probably loose Harrow
maybe Leslie if we even had a chance.
7. SOL if we keep Lowe because our scheme, style and fundamentals
will still be bad.
8. Bottom line is these guys get paid big money to “coach” and liking
them for who they are is just not enough. I wish it were.
9. Our entire athletic program is at the bottom with coaches making
big money with little results. On paper they meet the bill but in
reality nothing has changed.
10. I have been a fan for 28 years now and noticed the same thing. Our
fans never give up hope to be beat down every year (only a few
exceptions during this time period). We never shell out enough
money to get the best coach but pay a lot for ones that have
potential. That potential has rarely, if ever, paid a return on
investment for boosters.

Probably has no use in this thread but I feel better now. I just can’t get how this has happened for so long. We can stop paying but it’s the same result either way anymore.

As for the game. They played hard but without organization or talent…the result is usually the same. I’m still hoping as usual. I will 100% agree the effort has been much better this year. Regardless of talent, the team does play hard.

4. EdMar 12/02/2009 at 9:34 AM #

I liked the effort and generally the hustle. But it is going to be a long, long season:

– Can not get open or find the open man against the zone.
– Still cannot shoot the open three
– Tracy will not be able to get all those contested shots against the ACC’s big men.

We will have a few nights in which the stars align correctly and all the shots drop, but mostly it will be another season of wait until next year. (except can you imagine UNC, WAKE, DUKE, etc. next year)

Hope is all we have. Go Pack

My observations:
1) We looked horrid on D in the first half as Northwestern made their key run.
2) Our D improved some in the second half, but we continue to be prone to big mistakes at inopportune times.
3) I expected Woods’ shot to look better – hopefully, he’s just tired.
4) I’d buy the tired legs bit a little more if this was the 3rd game in three days, but while it’s true that this was the 2nd game in 3 days, wasn’t it just the 2nd game in 6 days too?
5) We looked short and slow for much of the game…not a good combo heading into the ACC.
6) Will be interesting to see what this NC State team can do when it hit’s its shots.
7) It’s only one game, we’ll find out more about this team and about Lowe’s ability to motivate and teach his guys as the season goes on.
8) Finally, as much we hate to admit it, we started 1 senior, 2 juniors, 1 sophomore, and 1 freshman last night…That’s not a ton of inexperience for a college team, so there’s not excuse to come out as flat as we did.

I’m in disagreement with some of LRM’s comments regarding Lowe, mainly the last paragraph as it relates to the game last night. With every loss it seems we sometimes try to rehash the same opinionated arguements instead of breaking down the actual game.

I thought the game was rather well coached, you can either go with the smaller set and try to 3 your way back into it, or you could have gone big and kept feeding it down hoping for the And 1. I thought it was some of the player execution that made the game go the other way, along with an unbelievable amount of missed shots that seemed to be “almost on target”. Wood missed 6 three’s….I’m guessing soon we won’t be seeing anything like that coming from him….he’s got to shake that funk.

CJ will really need to break out of his shell as he has been almost non-existent except for a few 3’s last game.

The other big men need to step up and prove their worth when in the game. Painter had a brief moment, Howell didn’t even make it on the floor, and I don’t know what the Aussie had going on last night.

We got beat, mainly by our missed shots, not what I would call a thumping. A thumping would be what UNC gave us the last year or so.

7. primacyone 12/02/2009 at 9:52 AM #

We make two(2) of those missed three pointers and we win the ball game – period. Good game plan, excellent effort, much progress over last year IMO.

Yea, big let down at the 2 spot, but we played a good basketball game over all.

One day’s rest may have been a factor. We make two of those three pointers and we win the game. I am not disapointed with the coaching and the play of most guys last night, just pissed that Northwestern’s shot was on and ours was off.

I am not sure what some of you watched last night, as you seemed have watched a different game than me. Either that, or this was the first and only game you have seen this year and have based your entire opinion of the season on this one game and the fact that our shot was not falling and we were weak at the two spot.

I mean dang, how can you not see the postives of this team compared to last year? Did you not see the people on the floor, did you not see the turnovers we forced, did you not see the penetration we had, did you not see the desire and will, did you not see the bench jumping up and down and supporting the guys on the floor when we made our runs, did you not see our guys running the floor, did you not see the big plays we made, did you not see the growth and development of Javi, did you not see the coaching adjustments from the first half to the second?

Two shots go in (and they were solid open looks and not forced heaves of desparation) or we get the foul called (which we should have) on a couple of our close in shots, and we win and with satisfiying fashion.

How many games have you seen this year LRM? I personally think your opinion is way off base.

8. primacyone 12/02/2009 at 9:58 AM #

This deserves repeating from page 1.

SFN: That’s not a totally fair representation. You haven’t seen this before because you haven’t seen that kind of scrappy effort for 40 minutes or that kind of defense.

These guys are limited in skill. No doubt. But, that is different than what you have seen the last two years when a more talented team would have thrown in the towel emotionally earlier in the game.

It sucks to lose…but, it is not fair to represent their effort as the same old song and dance.

9. Thinkpack17 12/02/2009 at 10:15 AM #

We got “thumped”? “Drilled”? Wait, no I’m sorry, we got “absolutely thumped”.

Did I watch the same game as these guys? A poster said it before. We get too high with the wins, too low with the losses.

10. thekind 12/02/2009 at 10:15 AM #

SFN-
I was extremely disappointed in your analysis of last nights game. If our hopes are pinned to Degand, then we ought to all find another team to pull for.
What stood out to me (and should have been obvious to all), was how bad our defense was. Their help defense is the worst I have ever witnessed.

Additionally, I keep hearing about how great this Wood kid is, and how he reminds everyone of Redddick.
Watch Woods on offense, and he seldom ever moves. Reddick ran baseline to baseline to get free for jump shots.

I believe Sidney is an bad trouble and he deserves it. The bottom line with him is that kids DO NOT play hard for him. EVER!

11. drizzlewolf 12/02/2009 at 10:23 AM #

I didn’t think we played that bad last night. I mean, yeah we missed shots and the D looked shakey at times, but the heart was there. The mistakes we made are fixable. I was just glad to see our guys play for 40 min.

12. tobaccordshow 12/02/2009 at 10:27 AM #

I’m also a bit perplexed by the analysis. Outside of our trouble at the 2 spot, I saw a scrappy defensive effort and alot of hustle. The game was closer than the score and we were in it at the end. Overall I thought it was far from perfect, but for the first time in 3 years, I see guys on the court who give a damn.

13. choppack1 12/02/2009 at 10:32 AM #

If I remember correctly last year we gave some teams with similar skill level all they could handle early – teams like Florida, Davidson and Marquette. If last night’s game qualifies as a scrappy effort, certainly those games did too.

But hey, silly me, I’m thinking that in order for this team to differentiate itself from it’s predecessors, it needs to come out playing hard…and I don’t think we did that early in the game. I do think we fought and got back into the game, but as I mentioned above, it’s not really fair to say that last year’s team didn’t fight…heck, they even finished 4-4 in the second half of the conference.

I certainly haven’t written this team or coach off. But it works both ways, you can’t call this a totally scrappy team and think you’ve turned in the corner in the effort and execution departments this early in the season either.

A long season is a long season – and as I said before this game, the true test of this team and program will be how it responds when they’ve been knocked down and when quitting becomes, well, a much more rational response.

14. wolfpackbball 12/02/2009 at 10:33 AM #

thekind’s last comment above is totally unfair to this team. IMO, they played fairly hard last night. I saw a team scrapping there in the second half that I haven’t seen in a LONG time. And, I’ve seen worse help defense in the last couple of years. To say that anything you’ve seen this year is the worst you’ve EVER seen, is hyperbole.
Also, there is no way to have a verdict on a kid who has played a grand total of 6 college games.

15. Pack Mentality 12/02/2009 at 10:34 AM #

24 points at halftime. Having a low percentage of 3 pointers being the difference in the game. Have I seen this before?

16. Thinkpack17 12/02/2009 at 10:34 AM #

Dear thekind,

If you think Degand would have not been a better fit at the 2 spot in last nights game you either did not watch the game, don’t know much about basketball or do not know what Degand brings to the table. NW was running a junk 3-1-1 half court press. Scott Wood kept doing exactly what he was supposed to do, with a wall of three defenders on him he would throw a ball fake, freeze the defense and swing the ball to Mays. Now instead of Mays attacking the D while it was recover and out of position he would stand straight up take one slow dribble and allow the Defense to reset the press. Now while Farnold’s lateral speed on D is in question, his straight away speed and speed with the ball are not. He would have attacked the zone, attacking the zone is not May’s game. Sorry for the long X’s and O’s summary, but it sounded like you needed it.

“Additionally, I keep hearing about how great this Wood kid is, and how he reminds everyone of Redddick.”

I think people are using the comparison in describing his range…not saying he will soon be 2nd all time in ACC scoring behind Taylor Handsjob.

“believe Sidney is an bad trouble and he deserves it. The bottom line with him is that kids DO NOT play hard for him. EVER!”

Ok…now I’m sure you didn’t watch the game last night.

Respectfully yours,

Thinkpack17

17. packbackr04 12/02/2009 at 10:36 AM #

i found it interesting that at one point after we put a little run together, Sid was motioning for everyone to put on a full court press and noone responded… even the commentators noticed Sidney waving his arm for them to press and NOT ONE Player pressed? why is that? were they that tired? did they not hear him? do they not care what he says?

i also like Deshawn Painter. He had an ugly shot last night that clanked of the backboard but he also had a really nice move that kissed off the glass and went in. at least he has the body and athleticism to play in the ACC.

18. Wulfpack 12/02/2009 at 10:41 AM #

I was befuddled when I first read SFN’s take as well. I haven’t heard from Farnold Degand in about a year. He wasn’t good then, the third wheel, so what makes him so good now?

The effort was nothing to write home about. I don’t know how you can praise it when Northwestern scored the majority of their points on wide open lay-ups and jump shots. Defense MUST improve for there to be any hope this year.

19. Class of 2009 12/02/2009 at 10:41 AM #

In lieu of so many posters getting down-and-out about the “we’re in year 4 so why aren’t we going to the big dance yet” thing, we need to put some of this into perspective. How many good things did you see last night that you never saw 5 years ago? I’m loving the physical man-to-man you see on the inside, players not backing down in the key, rebounds being not just attempted for but fought over, and a team that actually tries to win and appears to still believe they can win, even if they are the underdogs and are trailing by 10. I keep seeing comments from people complaining about the effort, but I saw a team believe they could come back and win that game all the way up to the last minute.

To the NC State chicken-littles out there, how much are you expected to get done in 4 years considered we went from one system that was inherently flawed (the “Prince-dek’ system) to Sid’s way of playing the game? I’m not trying to pin Sid’s loss last night to Herb Sendek still ruining the team, but Sid’s methodologies are radically different from Herbs and that means have 4 years to build completely different players (not so much an excuse anymore), re-educate the ones that are still on the team, and try to correct fundamental mentalities that pervaded the Sendek era (like giving up on the rebounds and playing a slower-paced/less physical game). I’m seeing a lot of that right now despite still having some “legacy players” (those recruited in the fall-out of regime change) and facing the prospect of rebuilding a team in a state where you are already an underdog by default. It’s an uphill battle to have a successful NC State season in the ACC, regardless of who you are. I can’t imagine how obnoxious it is to try rebuilding a program with no NCAA coaching experience in this conference.

All that being said, Sid’s standard to be measured is his record. If we are pulled through the slop for 4-5 years with all this “adjusting” and then are still no better then we were with Herb, Sid’s a complete bust. That being said, if we have to suffer these first years and start to see a more modern, aggressive, and competitive NC State team with strong recruits and solid wins, I am going to keep a list of everyone wanting to abandon ship and rub it in their faces. Personally I see no reason why not to expect the later of the two.

Look, I removed my opinion about Lowe from the original game recap because I realize it’s a polarizing perspective, and while ordinarily that wouldn’t matter to me, in this case I feel like there’s too much focus on my comments and it’s dilluting some very good discussion about this game, which wasn’t my intent.

Again, my opinion on Lowe isn’t based solely on last night — certainly I don’t blame Lowe for our poor shot selection which resulted in 11% shooting from long range. But I do blame him for not having a capable point guard in the fourth year of his tenure or having a gameplan in place to attack a 1-3-1 zone or being able to effectively finish on a two-on-one fast break.

I truly want Lowe to succeed because, if nothing else, I’m selfish and I’m ready for the team I love to start winning. But unfortunately, I’m frustrated because it seems that every argument or line of reasoning in favor of Lowe is being recycled from 10 years ago.

21. Pack Mentality 12/02/2009 at 10:47 AM #

Packback04…I know what you’re referring to with him telling them to full court press and the team not responding. The announcers noticed it too. This tells me that they don’t really practice this style of play that much or else why the hell would they act like they didn’t know what sid was telling them to do on multiple occasions. Tells me we are a slow tempo, low scoring team. Anybody who thinks differently, will you please tell me why.

22. rtpack24 12/02/2009 at 10:53 AM #

CJ is the size of a 2 but is really a 3. Sun nite he kept loosing his man on cuts and was also getting beat off the dribble. We need help in the backcourt and on this team it needs to come from Degand. How long is he suspended? Howell will help our scoring when he is in shape enought to play some minutes. Sun night he looked close to 260 to me. He needs to lose at least 20lbs. Team did play hard, but if Javi and Mays have to play major minutes together it will be a long season.

23. Thinkpack17 12/02/2009 at 10:54 AM #

“But I do blame him for not having a capable point guard in the fourth year of his tenure or having a gameplan in place to attack a 1-3-1 zone or being able to effectively finish on a two-on-one fast break.”

Well if you want to stick to this game…let’s stick to it. We did not lose this game because of PG play. Javi is our PG…and Javi kept us in it. If it wasn’t for him this thing could have gotten ugly. There were a few trips when NW’s guard came down and hit us in the mouth with great plays, and Javi came back and matched him. The ONLY good looks we got out of the half court set last night came from a dribble drive from Javi. Javi was 2-4 from 3 until he took two threes in crunch time after May/Wood/Horner had lost confidence and passed on. He was in passing lanes all night and harrassed the hell out of people. We have asked Javi to put the pedal to the metal…so there may be a few games to come when he throws up a clunker and we lose because of it…but last night was not one of them.

24. primacyone 12/02/2009 at 11:06 AM #

^We win last night and Javi would have been the player of the game. A good porton of T. Smith’s points came from a Javi setup. If the shots were falling, Javi would have had at least another 4-6 assist last night, maybe another 6-7.

And that behind the back the pass to Smith was “ON THE MONEY”. So was that touchdown pass he threw to Smith. Not only was it on the money, but Smith was running the floor hard and was well ahead of everyone else and Javi had the presence of mind to make the pass to begin with.

25. sautz 12/02/2009 at 11:06 AM #

WOW, I can’t believe that NC State basketball has devolved into people getting excited over us just showing scrappiness and effort. My 8 yr old’s team shows just as much of that as this team.
I see the term “cupboard is bare” all the time. Lowe has driven this team into a huge “cupboard is bare” situation. Save for Smith we may not have a decent ACC player on the roster (So much for Sid’s saving grace of great recruiter – show me the results).
Listen, I know this is a lost season as amply stated by Fowlup and Lowe but in year 4 having throw away seasons until the next in a long line of saviors come in WTNY is unacceptable.
So, for the rest of the year lets revel the scrappiness displayed while watching terribly coached and played basketball much like the Special Olympics (no offense to those fine athletes).
