Shocker in Raleigh! Charita Stubbs released (noon update with records)

Link to GoPack

Two questions remain:

(1) First, will Stubbs repeat her previous behavior of playing the race card when things don’t go her way?

(2) Second, will Lee Fowler be allowed to hire Stubbs’ replacement? You see, Fowler has ALREADY fired & hired a volleyball coach at NC State — and, he CHOSE CHARITA STUBBS! How/why in the world would you let the man that was responsible for hiring the coach that compiled perhaps the worst results/performance in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference in ANY sport make ANOTHER hire in that sport? Just asking.

The press release is obscenely laughable when the SPORTS department doesn’t even share the RECORD of a program or coach upon the the coach’s release. I queue our resident statistical gurus to share with us the records and statistics that GoPack.com doesn’t want to share with you.

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State Director of Athletics Lee Fowler announced today that head volleyball coach Charita J. Stubbs will not be retained.

Stubbs’ tenure ends after four losing seasons. The Wolfpack finished the 2009 campaign by topping North Carolina in five sets this past Wednesday.

“We certainly appreciate all that Coach Stubbs and her staff have done for the Wolfpack program during their time at NC State,” said Fowler. “Her dedication and commitment over the past four seasons has been exemplary.

“In the best interest of the program, however, we feel like this is the time to move in a different direction.”

Under Stubbs the volleyball program consistently excelled in the classroom, placing four student-athletes on the All-ACC Academic Volleyball Team, 17 on the ACC Honor Roll and 23 on the Dean’s list.

“I appreciate the experience and opportunity that I was given at NC State, and I am thankful for the support that was provided,” said Stubbs. “NC State is an up-and-coming program and I think we have laid a strong foundation.

“I think that the administration is doing a good job of moving the program in the right direction by doing what is best for the program. I wish NC State nothing but the best and I am excited about what the future holds for everyone involved. I will always follow this program.”

NC State will immediately begin a national search to replace Stubbs.

You can click here for our “Tag” of Charita Stubbs which includes a link to this all-time SFN classic that included the following quote from the Technician:

Coaches: if you are looking for success, please follow volleyball coach Charita Stubbs’ three step plan for establishing a winning program and building fan support. [SFN note: Stubbs is a Fowler hire]

1. Demonstrate unflinching excellence on the court. In three years with the Wolfpack, Stubbs has accumulated a 3-61 record in the ACC and a 14-84 record overall.

2. Respond to criticism in a professional, mature manner. On Oct. 14, Technician ran an editorial cartoon complimenting Stubbs’ first ACC wins in a backhanded manner. Stubbs, a black woman, felt the cartoon was directed at her race rather than her performance as a coach.

Stubbs responded to the Oct. 14 piece by refusing to comment to Technician reporters, demanding a front page apology and talking to seemingly everyone about the cartoon except the Technician staff. Repeated invitations to Stubbs to come to our office and discuss the issue in an open forum were left unanswered, and what could have been a learning experience for everyone involved developed into a bitter standoff.

Personally, I don’t think there was anything racist about the cartoon, but I will invite anyone interested to make up their own mind. Search “stubbs cartoon” on Technician’s Web site and see for yourself.

3. Create strong student and fan support by alienating the student newspaper. Stubbs understands that the best way to put out the word about her blossoming volleyball program is to refuse to talk to the only media outlet that will ever regularly cover N.C. State volleyball. She has not allowed any interviews with Technician reporters since the cartoon ran Oct. 14 (She has also not won any matches since that date.)

As sports editor, I have loved working with the wonderful people in the Athletics Department. From coaches to media relations, people have always behaved professionally, even if the results on the field weren’t ideal. But Stubbs has shown there are exceptions to the rule. Technician will continue to send reporters to objectively cover the volleyball program. It is up to Stubbs to do the mature thing and repair the bridge that has been burned between our organizations.

WV Wolf update:
Charita Stubbs’ overall record in her 4 years was 22-111 (.165) and 4-80 (.048) in the ACC with finishes of 12th, 12th, 10th and 12th.

Mary Byrne was the previous coach from 2001-2005 and had an overall record of 33-122 (.213) and 2-84 (.023) in the ACC.

Kim Hall was the coach from 1994-2000 and had an overall record of 101-138 (.423) and an ACC record of 21-87 (.194).

In the 10 years under Lee Fowler (Hall 1 year, Byrne 5 years, Stubbs 4 years) the volleyball program’s overall record is 64-255 (.201) with an ACC record of 7-179 (.038) and 9 last place finishes.

Finally! Lee’s showing he cares maybe? A little bit?

  2. burnbarn 12/01/2009 at 5:47 PM #

to point #1) By reading Stubb’s statement, it is clear a settlement has been reached where both parties will not discuss this matter in public ever. It wouldn’t surprise me on other the conditions in the settlement was there would be no release of her record.
So there will be no race card and it would be a bad career move for her to do so again. Seems this firing was handled well.

#2 Not sure.. maybe Jeff’s smiley face will show up here.

  3. Wulfpack 12/01/2009 at 5:53 PM #

So you’re saying we actually have standards? Who knew.

  4. Par Shooter 12/01/2009 at 6:01 PM #

    What? Why??

  5. Cardiff Giant 12/01/2009 at 6:03 PM #

Pure cover for the “Fowler will never fire a coach” charge. Stubbs’s results and her program in general are beyond pathetic, so she was the perfect choice for this.

  6. Dr. BadgerPack 12/01/2009 at 6:03 PM #

SFN- I don’t know about putting the W/L record in the release. Yes, it’s fact and anyone can look it up, but if the two sides are aiming to handle the parting in an amicable, professional manner than their will be kid gloves on. No need to pour gasoline on the fire.

As for a national search… I’d start scouring the assistant ranks of the Big Ten, Pac 10 and Big 12… Because we all know Lee doesn’t have a short list yet. 😉

  7. wolfpackattack89 12/01/2009 at 6:18 PM #

    Who really cares. It’s volleyball.

  8. StateFans 12/01/2009 at 6:22 PM #

Fair points about the record. Although I still think it is odd.

Notre Dame’s press release re: Weis
    http://www.und.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/113009aac.html

“Weis spent five seasons as Irish head coach from 2005-09, with his teams achieving consecutive records of 9-3 (Fiesta Bowl appearance) in ’05, 10-3 (Sugar Bowl appearance), 3-9, 7-6 (Hawai’i Bowl victory) and 6-6 in ’09 – for an overall 35-27 mark (.564).”

    Louisville’s press release re: Kragthorpe
    http://www.uoflsports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/112809aac.html

“Kragthorpe, 44, just finished his third season at the University of Louisville, guiding the Cardinals to a 15-21 overall record and a 5-16 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. His 2009 squad finished 4-8 overall and 1-6 in the league after a 34-14 loss on Friday to Rutgers.”

  9. Dr. BadgerPack 12/01/2009 at 7:06 PM #

Weiss’ at least has some nice points… Kragthorpe… err… I dunno. I suppose 10-5 OOC is nice (yeah… cupcake central).

With Stubbs it could fall under the “if you don’t have anything nice to say about something….” category.

The academic record is at least nice. Unfortunately, it also indicates the entire team was basically well aware of how bad they were getting their collective ass handed to them on the court.

  10. rky 12/01/2009 at 7:11 PM #

the real question here . . . who was the person leaning on Fowler hard enough to get him to fire a coach? I cannot believe that he thought of this action AND carried through all on his own without a serious fire under his arse . . . even if it is only volleyball.

  11. wolfonthehill 12/01/2009 at 8:13 PM #

Any potential link between a coach being fired, and Lee being conspicuously absent from the football game last Saturday???

    Or just wishful thinking…

  12. Pelletman 12/01/2009 at 9:15 PM #

This is wonderful news. My niece is an all-star in highschool volleyball and has visited numerous locations (from Ohio to Florida) looking at colleges (she is only a junior). Last weekend she asked me how State could put up with this situation. The coach visits recruits like she is going to the mall with her child and is not putting forth a positive image of NC State. She has a UNC fanatic mother (my sister) who even said that “State deserves better” and “State used to have a good athletics program”. When we start getting support from UNC supporters, you know that things were bad.

  13. Paramarine 12/01/2009 at 9:46 PM #

Best headline ever. Both hilarious, and appropriate (which is really quite sad once you remember it’s regarding your alma mater).

  14. old13 12/01/2009 at 10:09 PM #

Unfortunately, as history tells us, one always has to wonder if someone made Foulup fire her, even in this pathetic circumstance.

  15. Canis 12/02/2009 at 12:20 AM #

Stubbs was an idiot. Picking a fight with the student newspaper? Seriously?

  16. BassPacker 12/02/2009 at 8:45 AM #

    “Who really cares. It’s volleyball.”

Thats a shameful response. Alot do, including me and my family. My two daughters plays volleyball, has whole life since was young starting in middle school and high school. In between they played on a Junior Olympic Volleyball team. To them, volleyball is maybe just as important as football is to you, and its the same for thousands of young women in N.C. Go to Greensboro or Richmond Va during a J.O. Regional tournament and see how important volleyball is. Also ask about the NCSU volleyball program and see how big a snicker you get.

My youngest daughter has moved on to play Junior College volleyball, with perhaps a dream to one day play with a Division One program just like a Russell Wilson did two years ago. We are all die hard NCSU fans, but the current program at State is irrevalent to her and all her young lady peers who will follow volleyball as lunatic fringe football or basketball fans.

So to those who think nobody cares, think again !!

^ Agreed. While FB is by far my favorite collegiate sport, I enjoy a variety of others. I also understand that others have different tastes and interests. And I certainly want any team or individual wearing the red-and-white in any sport to do well.

  18. Class of 2009 12/02/2009 at 10:14 AM #

^^Ditto. Let me also add that whether it’s a big ESPN sport or not, it’s still part of the school’s reputation. Carolina is well known in basketball because of their successful history, but just look at the athletic department in general… they’re stacked. The reason schools like Carolina have the reputation and popularity they do is not just because of one sport, but because of an entire program of highly competing athletes in a myriad of different sports. When a Carolina fan laughs at me enjoying the Wolfpack beating up on Carolina’s football teams, they are usually laughing because they have EVERY right to say “Well, we’ll give you that since we pretty much dominate you in everything else”. Well… yeah, they’re right! The frustration with Lee Fowler and his inability to encourage true competition in the department and get good coaches is that there is no reason why we CAN’T be competitive on this level in EVERY sport. Having any sport team at a major University display absolutely horrendous performance like our volleyball team is a shame.

BTW, when I was at State, they had volunteer sign-ups through the Student Wolfpack Club (unsure whether it was official or just some under-the-rug deal made by a few students with the coach) to basically stand outside of Reynolds during volleyball games, shout at people who passed by, and tell everyone something to the affect of “If you really support your Wolfpack, come support the volleyball team! Watch them beat Carolina!”. When I, as a student and one coming from a line of Wolfpackers, walk by any of our athletes competing against the Tarheels and thing “So what; we’re just going to get smashed and I have better things to do then watch the _____ team lose for the 9th straight game”, then it should signify a real problem to the coaches and the AD.

I would like to look at the cartoon and judge her reaction for myself, but I am having a hard time locating it on teh Technicain website (brings up a lot of cartoons, but not the one I want to see). Can anyone assist me with that?

  20. Classof89 12/02/2009 at 10:49 AM #

“As for a national search… I’d start scouring the assistant ranks of the Big Ten, Pac 10 and Big 12…”

I disagree BadgerPack. Stubbs was an assistant at top 20 and Pac-10 power Arizona. Clearly, she knew nothing about recruiting on the East Coast, let alone in North Carolina.

Last coach was head coach of a Division II school in the Dakotas. Stubbs was an assistant from the Pac-10.

Here’s a brilliant idea: how about the head coach of a successful small college program in the Southeast, who knows where the talent is and how to get it. This is a fully funded Division I major conference program in a conference that just got 4 bids to the NCAA tourney (the most ever for the ACC in volleyball, I believe). I refuse to believe it can’t be successful. Volleyball won an ACC championship in 1987, and can do it again, with the right coaching choice, and the right choice is someone from this region of the country.

And, for the record, her ACC record was 4-80 in four seasons, which, amazingly enough was BETTER than the six year record of her predecessor. At this rate of improvement, we will have a coach with a .500 record in ACC play some time in the 25th Century…

from the Technician article: “Stubbs’ assistant coach, Kasey Harwell, who joined the staff in 2007, resigned Monday, and Stubbs’ other assistant, Keisha Demps, was also released Tuesday, leaving Fowler to hire an entire coaching staff before next fall’s season. ”

So there will be literally noone to provide the slightest bit of continuity. So when Fowler takes months to hire a replacement, as he will no doubt do, the new coach will face yet another massive from the ground up rebuilding job.

  21. Classof89 12/02/2009 at 11:28 AM #

Hey Lee, let me chair the coaching search. Here’s the first phone call I make:

(from the American Volleyball Coaches Association website):

“AVCA Division II Southeast Region Coach of the Year
    Shelton Collier, Wingate University
    2009 Record: 36-2, 16-0 South Atlantic Conference

In his eighth season at Wingate University, Shelton Collier has continued to guide his team to new heights. Leading the Bulldogs to their third consecutive undefeated South Atlantic Conference (SAC) season, Wingate finished with an impressive record of 16-0 in league bouts and a 36-2 overall mark. Under Collier’s guidance, the Bulldogs have won 95 out of their last 100 matches dating back to the 2007 season. Wingate captured its fourth consecutive SAC tournament title under Collier and has now won 12 straight SAC Tournament contests. For his efforts, Collier was named the SAC Coach of the Year for the third year in a row. This is the second consecutive time Collier has received the AVCA Division II Southeast Region Coach of the Year award. He also previously earned AVCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year during his tenure at Division I Georgia Tech.”

  22. Classof89 12/02/2009 at 11:38 AM #

And here is the press release when Collier left Georgia Tech, where he also did a fantastic job (he stepped down as coach of Tech in 2002 because his new wife was going to be promoted in the Charlotte fire department, and therefore he made the decision to move to Charlotte to be with her):

    http://www.theacc.com/sports/w-volley/spec-rel/012802aaa.html

I tell you what, this guy might not want to coach here…but I’d for darn sure call him up and ask him for recommendations. There is no excuse for the last two volleyball hires made by Fowler when people like this are around in our area. Think Collier knows volleyball coaches in the Mid-Atlantic region? Damn straight he does…he’s coached in this area for 19 years…

  23. SuperStuff 12/02/2009 at 11:42 AM #

Yeah I would definately get Collier on the phone. Even if he doesn’t hire him I’m sure he would have some thoughts on other coaches.

Collier would be on top of the list for sure. Heres the link HB57 for the Stubbs cartoon. Coach Stubbs said it sterotyped black people as not professional and took issue with the lips. Heres a comment from Technician after Stubbs released her racist claims:

“Coach Stubbs… obvious racial stereotypes! What are you talking about? Why don’t you specify these items in the cartoon, because I am convinced they don’t exist. You say the cartoon does not portray you as a professional, but doesn’t it show you wearing a suit? Maybe the lips were a little big, but get over it. The cartoon was a caricature of you, not a portrait. Congratulations on bringing your skin color into a piece that solely discusses your performance as a professional.”

You be the judge, I find it unfounded.
