The State of State 2.0 – Men’s Basketball

With the season officially getting underway this week, I thought I would share some historical stats on our men’s basketball program. Similar entires for football, women’s basketball and championships can be found here and here and here.

About WV Wolf

Graduated from NCSU in 1996 with a degree in statistics. Born and inbred in West "By God" Virginia and now live in Raleigh where I spend my time watching the Wolfpack, the Mountaineers and the Carolina Hurricanes as well as making bar graphs for SFN. I'm @wvncsu on the Twitter machine.

I have a question. This is kind of a conspiracy theory I have, but I don’t know how things work “at the top”, so to speak.

What is the pecking order of who controls what at NC State? I mean the VERY top, down. Board of trustees, the chancellor, big money donors, athletics director, the head of the UNC system, etc.

The reason I ask is that I’ve always wondered if there was someone at the very top that has a particular “leaning” to one of the state schools (and it’s NOT NC State!) And makes it difficult for NC State to hire good ADs and good coaches. In other words, is it even remotely possible that someone somewhere is “keeping us down”?

It’s just that we’ve been so down for so long that I have to wonder, is it by design? I mean, if we were legitimately trying, one would think SOMETHING good would have happened for us over the years besides multiple fishing trophies. Like the old saying goes, even a blind pig can hit the broad side of a barn once in a while.

I can’t help but wonder if someone in the NC system thinks that NORTH CAROLINA (as in the STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA) benefits more (financially, etc.) by the state system having a perpetual “top dog”, and is striving to keep the current top dog (again, which is definitely NOT NC State)… on top.

Not knowing how everything is structured only fuels my theory. 95% of me thinks it’s not true. But the rest thinks it could happen. How else could we be this continually bad if all the key players involved were really trying?

I’ve wondered about this since Todd Turner was hired as our AD, and we stayed with Les Robinson a long time. And then we stayed with Herb Sendek ENTIRELY too long. And we had some athletics success under Mary Anne Fox, but then she “up and left”. And do I even need to mention Lee Fowler? It just seems odd that we couldn’t have done a LITTLE better at some point than we have. A little TOO odd.

Lee Fowler hasn’t done anything but “lead” NCSU to the barrell of athletic programs. The stats back this up. I don’t know how anyone could possibly sing his praises with a straight face. Simply put, there is not a whole lot of good to say about him. And he had ZERO to do with hiring TOB.

    Wulfpack,
I must disagree. Examining the data clearly shows we were at the bottom of the barrel (at least in the lower third) before Fowler started. He has certainly not helped us climb out of that level, however.
