Monday morning in Wolfpackerville or NC State is 8-35-2 in all fall sports

Hello Monday, Wolfpackers!

About a month ago, we took a quick view of NC State’s weekend sports performance on our message boards that included the following:

Rifle team falls to Nebraska

Volleyball swept by Duke

Soccer loses to Wake

Football dismantled by Boston College

[snip]

Our ACC record in volleyball in the ten seasons while Lee Fowler has been AD now stands at 6-170. That is not a typo.

Seven ACC teams have 6 or more ACC wins THIS SEASON.

Our ACC record for fall sports with win/loss records is 4-22-2.
Football: 0-3
Volleyball: 0-10
M Soccer: 2-3-1
W Soccer: 2-6-1

And as best as I can tell, the rifle team is 0-4 in the GARC.

It’s the start of another week and we thought that we would take a moment to highlight what is making news at NC State by looking at the main stories from NC State’s Minister of Propaganda, Gopack.com

Rifle_Loss_11_16_09_sm

Soccer_Loss_11_16_09_sm

VB_Loss_11_16_09_sm

State’s 23-43 drubbing at the hands of Clemson less than 48 hours ago is already considered ‘old news’ by the good folks at Gopack.com and isn’t even rotating through the main stories.

But, our resident statistician did a little update for us on NC State’s ACC competition this fall —

ACC records for fall sports:
Football: 1-5
Volleyball: 0-17
M Soccer: 2-5-1
W Soccer: 2-7-1
M Swimming: 2-0
W Swimming: 1-1
Total: 8-35-2 (.178)

* I think rifle is 0-5 in the GARC, gopack.com says we are unbeaten in the SEARC, but trying to find rifle records and standings is next to impossible.

* Volleyball ACC record under Fowler is now 6-177 (.033). 9 ACC teams have 7 or more ACC wins this season.

“No one’s heard of us outside of the South. Every time I tell someone I went to college in North Carolina, they assume I’m a Tarheel or root for the Tarheels. A few worldly folks assume, since I’m not a Tarheel fan that I went to Duke.”

One of my employees called me from Deleware yesterday to congratulate me on our big win over Miami Saturday. I didn’t even bother correcting him.

“It’s a fact, kids want to go to schools who are successful on the athletic field.”

There’s no doubt about it. Love ’em or hate ’em, unc-ch gets this loud and clear. Honestly, all you have to do is look at the number of applicants to a given school immediately after winning a championship – there’s a huge bump, which in turn drops that school’s acceptance rate, which in turn shoots them up the “Best Colleges” charts.

Yes, that’s right… athletic success is the quickest, easiest way to improve the overall image and academic rank of your university. No question about it. Zero. It’s a VERY large part of why unc-ch is typically ranked in the 20’s, and we’re in the 80’s.

But for some reason, we continue to live in fear of athletic success, thinking that it will somehow COMPROMISE our academics.

Nothing could, in fact, be further from the truth.

    **sigh**

Since this discussion has turned toward where kids want to go to school, I can honestly say when I went to State (75-79) it was the perfect place for me. I loved it, and didn’t appreciate it as much as I should have. There was very little I would change from those days.
Now I can honestly say even though I raised my kids to pull for the Wolfpack, I wasn’t surprised or even disappointed when none so far (one to go) even applied. The 3rd one who is a high school freshman has already started his “dream” school list and we didn’t make it. Who could blame him?

Other schools fire their volleyball coach for losing to us!

“There’s no doubt about it. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, unc-ch gets this loud and clear.”

It would be one thing if it were only unc-ch that got this. They have a basketball history matched by only 3-4 schools in the country. What bugs me is that App St, UNCC, etc, etc, etc, get it. No offense to those schools, but if a university with the clout of NC State can’t figure out what they have, then something is really really wrong.

As a side note, has there been anything along the lines of a public reprimand from NC State regarding Oblinger and the other guy (can’t remember his name)?

It’s so embarrassing to have lunch with your co-workers to hear what a great weekend it was for unc athletics: Harrison Barnes, Bowl eligibility, bball is back in swing. Then, driving to work this AM and 620 is feeding the powder puke blue propaganda machine. Jed doesn’t care as long as the money keeps rolling in. I was at the Maryland game and saw him driving around in his golf cart with that goofy ass grin. I so wanted to ask him WTF with our athletics. If unc can make a 100% commitment to winning, why can’t we?

Swimming is not a Fall Sport.

    Back to volleyball…

We lost all 17 ACC matches by a combined score of 1 win, 50 losses.

I have a couple of questions?

Is the coach paid or a volunteer?
Are the players on scholarship or walk-on?

Reminds me of the little league girls softball team that I inherited one year. It was made up of the 13 girls that on draft day were not drafted by all the teams with coaches. Ten of the thirteen had not played before, threw of the wrong foot, were afraid to get under a fly ball, etc.

Maybe the same thing happened to our Volleyball coach

PS: We did not win a game, but we had fun

    Why isn’t Cross Country included?

  10. iBeenPacked 11/17/2009 at 1:49 PM #

    “6-177 (.033)”

this boggles the mind. sorta like scoring a 3 on a test – almost statistically impossible.

that fact that the coach hasn’t resigned and started a new career shows how little self respect and commitment to excellence the individual has.

Great institutions strive to be EXCELLENT in EVERYTHING they do: academics, sports – heck even parking and cafeteria food.

I live in SC now and used to cringe at the thought of my kids going to Clemson. Now i am almost looking forward to it.

ps. i took what was supposed to be my next wpc contribution and invested in a leaf blower. had a lot more fun blowing leaves last saturday than watching the fiasco on the field

This may be a dumb question, but we forced Jed to fire Amato after he went 3-9 in his last season here. Jed didn’t want to, but from what I heard, someone told him to either pull the trigger on Amato, or HE would be fired instead.

Why hasn’t anyone done something like this for volleyball. Does Jed even have anything to say about our volleyball “program”?

  12. StateFans 11/17/2009 at 2:16 PM #

    WTNY,

Cross Country doesn’t have head to head records because they compete in multi-squad events (meets).

  13. WTNY 11/17/2009 at 3:55 PM #

SFN — Thanks. I think it would be important to include that as a note at the bottom. And to include their finishes in the ACC championships. (Men’s CC did win an ACC title!)

  14. bradleyb123 11/17/2009 at 5:42 PM #

FWIW, State has competed in a few championship games that they ended up losing. I know that isn’t a championship, but it’s more than a lot of conference teams can boast. To make it to the championship in basketball after playing three straight days, only to lose to a rested, talented Carolina or Duke team that only played on two straight days, is not the worst fate in the world.

Please don’t mistake this as me defending Fowlup. The dude needs to go. Now.

I forwarded this to Chancellor Woodward this morning..but really don’t expect a reply…

    ACC records for fall sports:
    Football: 1-5
    Volleyball: 0-17
    M Soccer: 2-5-1
    W Soccer: 2-7-1
    M Swimming: 2-0
    W Swimming: 1-1
    Total: 8-35-2 (.178)

I think rifle is 0-5 in the GARC, gopack.com says we are unbeaten in the SEARC, but trying to find rifle records and standings is next to impossible.

    ^ Pa,
    Everyone should do the same.

  17. Classof89 11/18/2009 at 10:02 AM #

I agree, leaving Swimming in the fall sports totals artificially inflates the winning percentages. Fall sports are Cross Country, Soccer, Football, and Volleyball.

  18. harrisek 11/18/2009 at 7:10 PM #

When I go to gopack.com, I wonder how many ways can they keep saying “we lost” without actually using those words. Seems they think if they say “fell short” and other such euphemisms, it’s not really a loss. We stink and I’d rather get my stress from real life stuff not sports.

  19. BloggerEsquire 11/18/2009 at 9:29 PM #

    Losing… is a disease.

Email reply from Chancellor Woodward (although not much of one) regarding the fall sports record…..No joke!!
