GAWolf, I’m guessing you’ll find more of what we saw yesterday, only that was DUKE last night, not an SEC team…which makes it beyond unacceptable.

I think these quotes from TOB after the game sum up a lot.

“We think we’re playing our best guys, but whatever we’re asking out of them we’re not getting.”

“Whether we were playing man or zone, we weren’t even in the same area code sometimes with their guys.”

I do take exception to this one though…I’d say they quit on you last night coach. We all saw it.

“We’re halfway through the year and have a lot to play for. I don’t think these kids have any quit in them.”

We are a poorly coached football team at this point. Special teams and defense are pitiful. I am surprised. Second half last night was just horrible.

  4. ncsufan13 10/11/2009 at 8:14 AM #

No fan of NCSU should donate or support the athletics programs financially until drastic changes are made up top. Pitiful performances all around are not being fixed after a decade of mediocrity and money is probably the only thing left that can influence the administration to make changes.

We’ve been out-coached 3 times this season. TOB is overrated. I was naive. I apologize to myself. Wow.

Cutcliffe’s last game in the SEC as OC of Tennessee against Mike Archer as DC at Kentucky:

    Kentucky
    1 2 3 4 OT 2OT 3OT 4OT Total
    Tennessee (#19) 14 10 7 0 7 0 6 8 52
    Kentucky 0 7 14 10 7 0 6 6 50

    Pregame line: Kentucky by 2.5[43]

The Vol Offense works from the shotgun against Kentucky.

The Volunteers (9-3, 6-2) earned a shot at LSU in the SEC title game by beating the Wildcats (7-5, 3-5) for the 23rd straight time, the longest active winning streak by one team over another in major college football.

The game started with a one-play, 65 yard touchdown for the volunteers as a pass was thrown to Arian Foster by Eric Ainge. The rest of the first half went well for the volunteers as they led 24-7 heading into the break. Ainge and the Tennessee Offense built the halftime lead with touchdown passes to Foster, WR Lucas Taylor, and WR Quintin Hancock.

The game looked to be in hand when the Vols led 31-14 near the end of the 3rd quarter following an Ainge touchdown pass to TE Jeff Cottam. However the Wildcats fought back behind a strong second half performance by QB Andre Woodson, scoring 17 unanswered points to push the game into overtime.

The first overtime saw Kentucky score first when Woodson found Keenan Burton for an 8 yard touchdown pass. Tennessee answered with a touchdown pass of their own. Ainge connected with Gerald Jones, whose diving catch re-tied the score. In the second overtime, the game looked like it was over when Eric Ainge threw his third interception of the game. A tipped pass was corralled by Sam Maxwell, setting up Kentucky for a win with any score. However, a Kentucky 35-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Dan Williams to push the game into triple-overtime.

In the 3rd overtime, the Vols had a chance to end the game after an Austin Rogers touchdown reception, as they only needed a 2 point conversion. However Arian Foster was atopped short on an off tackle run and was also flagged for a personal foul for throwing the ball up in the air after the play was over. Kentucky had scored in the first half of that overtime period when Burton caught an 11 yard touchdown pass from Woodson. The two-point conversion failed, as Woodson’s pass fell incomplete, setting up UT for the opportunity to win with a touchdown and two-point conversion. When they failed to cash in on that opportunity, Foster showed his frustration by slinging the ball, and was flagged for a 15 yard penalty.

The penalty put the Vols in a hole to begin the 4th overtime period, forcing them to start from the 40 yard line. Nevertheless, the resilient volunteers scored their final touchdown in another one-play, 40 yard drive as Ainge found Hancock wide open. The Volunteers scored the two point conversion as well, with Ainge hitting Rogers on a quick slant. Kentucky matched the score when RB Derrick Locke ran in from the 2 yard line. Kentucky then needed to match the Vols’ two point conversion. The game-winning play came as Woodson was tackled from behind by DE Antonio Reynolds and a forced fumble was recovered by the Volunteer Defense. That play ended the 5-hour thriller with the final score: 52-50. [44]

The above game was at Kentucky and Kentucky was favored despite Tennessee’s ranking. I see A LOT of “wide open” talk when referencing Tennessee receivers.

I don’t think I have ever sit in Carter-Finley looking at the skies hoping the storms come so I would force myself to leave. The storm was on the field was bad enough, should have left. Think about it Pack Fans, a team (Duke) beat us at home and was so dominant was taking a knee on downs with 4 minutes to go in the game. Embarrassing.

I wake up this morning hoping that before my 10 year investment LTR seating is paid off, I stop feeling like I got Madoff’d by WPC.

I am def still on board with TOB, but he is on thin ice. I can deal with the losses even to teams that are not perceived to be better than NCSU, but I can not deal with the lack of effort on the field. You can come to the realization this D is horrible and probably will stay horrible with these players. Bad tacklers will always be bad tacklers unless they want to get better. There are a several players from the old regime that just don’t try to get better, and there are some players that are playing because of the numbers game or injuries that have no business playing D1 football.

I deal with some of that, but my biggest beef with TOB and his staff is the lack of creativity with the players they have. Sure Bible changed his offense some for Wilson, but the team only runs like 25 plays and the rest is Wilson running around wildly. Try running a two back formation, or using Glennon some to air it out from under center.

The D is just as vanilla as the O. What about blitzing some or mixing up coverage (zone to man), how bout trying some 3-4 principles using Young as a stand up backer? Rushing 4 and playing zone = a slow death or a quick death if the tackling and coverage is bad.

This season is lost why not throw stuff on the wall and see what sticks.

Is it time to start questioning Mike Archer? Also, State needs Texas’ Special teams coach, & should pay ANY amount to get him.

  11. Plz2BStateFan 10/11/2009 at 8:55 AM #

Can someone please tell me what is SUPPOSED to happen against that offense?

With the defense that we KEPT RUNNING the ENTIRE GAME, what was SUPPOSED to happen?

What were the adjustments? Were there any? Why were we even in that type of defense? Do we even have a different scheme to run?

  12. tuckerdorm1983 10/11/2009 at 9:02 AM #

    Top ten excuses

10 We are way better than we played, you just wait til the next game

9 Its not the players it is the coaches

8 Its not the coaches it is the players

    7 H1N1 (swine flu)

6 Players are good but the schemes and playcalling are bad!

5 I see progress in the team, even though the score doesn’t show it

4 It is always darkest before the dawn

3 Well, we may suck in football, but we will have a breakout year in basketball, you wait and see

    2 Wait until next year

    1 WE ARE REBUILDING!!

  13. EdMar 10/11/2009 at 9:07 AM #

Someone needs to listen and start acting……..

Last year for THE FIRST time since I was a student at State in the early seventies I refused to watch some basketball games. Too painful to see, it was much safer to read a brief disaster report on the paper or on the net the next day.

Yesterday driving the 3 hours home, I started thinking about not renewing my season football season tickets for next year. Spend a lot of money, a long drive, staying aggravated for three days, and a WASTE of a day.

I have never coached football, so I do not know what to do. I’m not sure I what point do you fire a coach or get rid of an athletic director. But when I see even the smaller schools in the ACC winning league championships and NCAA Championships in non–revenue sports and much better than us in revenue sports it makes you wonder.

I do not mind sending my yearly contribution to the Engineering Fund each year, but my check to the Wolfpack club is becoming harder and harder to write when you start to feel that results are not important.

I doubt that I’m the only feeling this way.

if we’re going to grab the pitchforks and torches lets make sure we get the right bum this time. instead of going after our coaches lets get to the root of the problem and dump our a.d. Fowler may be the nicest man in the world but we need someone with a little grease in their hair. he couldn’t sign a top level basketball coach when “he who shall not be named” left, despite offering what would have been the second highest salary in the acc at the time. he followed that up with hiring a football coach from one of the three teams that chuck amato actually managed to outcoach (i really think that says it all). we’ve gotten rid of Easley, our chancellor and our provost, maybe its about time we kick fowler to the curb and go get a real a.d. my take, we need to go out and get jeremy foley or one of the other ads who have turned the sec into the media juggernaut that gets recruits and coaches just by having openings. hell i’d settle for joe alleva at this point…

It was hard to get out of bed this morning. The hangover definitely hasn’t gone away as the enormity of this loss sinks in more and more.

Look, I really like Tom, how he handles himself and all that. But I’m starting to question if he’s the right man for the job here. We’re 3 years into this and we just lost to F-ing Duke. At home. That’s something that neither O’Shame nor Amato (once called the worst coach in Div-1A football) achieved. Isn’t that called going backwards? Can we look at ourselves and say we’re better now than we were 3-4 years ago? Really? I’m not all that sure.

I have listened/watched my last NCSU football game for the year. I, quite simply, have significantly more important things to do than watch/listen to a team that allows Duke to hang half a hundred on them.

Tom, you have very seriously damaged your credibility/stature with me. You have a long way to go to make up for this. In fact, I’m not sure you can do anything this season to remove this taste from my mouth. Not even a whipping of UNC, because at the end of it all, we’ll still have a loss to Duke. At home….

    Bill Cowher for AD?

  17. packer74 10/11/2009 at 9:49 AM #

Probably the worst exhibition of tackling for DI football team I have ever seen. No defensive adjustments. Poor special teams play. Same old result, different day. What on earth did the coaches and team do in practice last week to prepare for this game? Must have playing video games. Add me to the list who have more important things to do than to watch mediocre to crappy football each week.

Unfortunately, I remember a LOT of painful losses at CF…but this one will be in the top 5. There were some glimmers during the first half….but our offense was actually the problem…NOT the defense. Our explosive O kept the score via the “your turn to score…exchange”…but the punt that bounced off the back of our guy was the turning point. The defense was TIRED….not that they were that good when they weren’t but if you look at the time of possession (20 for us…40 for them), there is your answer. We need to have a more sustained offense….

OK…remember our heritage. Phillip (I can score anytime with no time left) Rivers set the tone. Russell Wilson is great…but he will NOT be there next fall. They boy will be with the “boys of summer” earning big bucks….not thinking about how he can set a new NCAA record.

We need to have a decent secondary….the way we gave up the short passes is pathetic. You can do that…IF you stop them from making fist downs.

OK… Extinguish the torches. Let the tar pot solidify. Keep the chickens in the house until their feathers grow back again.

TOB should be embarrassed and should make some changes….whether that is in his coaching staff and/or on the field. I am NOT making holiday plans for a bowl outing this year. It AIN’T gonna happen.

We need a few good wins this season and definitely need to make BUTCHY and the UNX clan LOOK LIKE THE TURKEYS. If he loses to BD and the simpletons from UNX….? What a fiasco.

Bit of humor….did anyone catch the T. J. Yates interview on WRAL? Classic….”Duh, the coach said we were trying to memorize too many plays. It wuz causin’ us to make mistakes. We R only gonna run 2 plays this weekend. Hope it heps us….”. Well, the Ga Southern that came to Chapel Hill this weekend was NOT the GS of yesteryear….if they had been, then BD would be in deep doo-doo this morning.

Suggest a healthy shot of caffine this AM….

    GO PACK…

  19. LRM 10/11/2009 at 9:53 AM #

I don’t think this is fair…we should be giving that offense a lot more flack for producing a whopping *three* first downs in the entire second half, one of which came during final minute junk time.

If the fourth quarter of the Pitt game was the best I’ve seen State play under TOB, the second half last night was by far the worst.

  20. zahadum 10/11/2009 at 10:09 AM #

The zone has got to go. It makes no sense at all to play that scheme when you tackle as poorly as our D does. The whole point of a zone is to keep the guy in front of you and punish him when he makes the catch.

Yes, with our DB’s we’ll get burnt deep some times if we play tight man. But at least the opposing receivers will actually have to make an effort to get open. Hard to see how the results could be any worse.

  21. wolfdog1 10/11/2009 at 10:21 AM #

The absolute worst display of NC State football I have ever seen.

Some of you folks can make all the excuses you want, but this simply boils down to one thing COACHING. TOB has had plenty of time, plenty of time to straighten this mess out, but he is quickly showing that he doesn’t have the know with all to accomplish that. Give you a little clue. He said at the post game interview that “their pass game was sophisticated.” Good GREEF give me a break.

Please lets get off of this Marine Colonel stuff. Bull Sh……………!!!!

Last week Wake came into that game well prepared and coached by somebody that knew what the H…. he was doing. Look at Wake with their facilities and money they have to put in to their program compared to us. Can you just imagine what Grobe would do at a place like Tennessee. Why he stays a t Wake is beyond me.

And this week the same thing DUKE well coached and well prepared, and how long has the Duke coach been there. He simply made us look silly.

And State people you better fasten your seat belt because this fellow down the road a piece name Butch Davis isn’t fooling around, and it ain’t gonna be long before he stomps our AS…………!! I guess he will have a sophisticated defense or maybe offense. Get ready Wolpack Club, Carolina blue is coming to town soon and it AIN’T GONNNA BE PRETTY!!!

I watch the coaches on TV at Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, LSU and etc. and what you see are men up and down the side lines involved in every Da……… thing that is going on showing intense enthusiasm. NOT someone is walking slowly here and there with ear phones on as though he were listening to music and doesn’t give a D………..

I said it last t week and I will say it again. ITS GOING TO TAKE 7 OR 8 YEARS OF THIS SH……… BEFORE WE START TO SCRATCAH OUR HEADS AND GET ENOUGH OF IT. No wonder the folks at Chapel Hill think we are a bunch of dumb ass……….

SAD REALLY SAD FOR NC STATE ATHLETICS, but without my DOLLAR.

  22. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/11/2009 at 10:40 AM #

My first year at State was 1993, those bball teams back then were beyond awful but it was from our own doing before I even got there. The MOC years were almost as painful as the Robinson years but at least there were good games mixed in the WTF games. After 16 years of Robinson, Sendek, and now Lowe I’ve just become numb to bball and when people rag on me about it I just shrug the shoulders and say oh well.

After yesterday’s game, it’s the first time I’ve been embarassed to be a State fan.

Now I have to figure out how to make sure that my love of State doesn’t rub off onto my son’s.

  23. Keg Man 10/11/2009 at 10:46 AM #

Last in the ACC in defense last year. We were calling Duke’s next play in the stands with over 90% accuracy after the first quarter. Leak the RB out of the backfield on first down how times? Crossing pattern over the middle on how many third downs? Duke ran the same plays to the same holes in the zone defense all game and we never adjusted. Screen, crossing pattern, pass to RB over and over and over! aaaaauuuuuggggghhhhhhhh! At some point didn’t even Charlie Brown Learn, he quit trying to kick the ball? Horrible job of coaching is all I can say. Inexcusable as the DOC especially knowing it was coming after the Wake game.

The coach’s job is to put the players in a position to win. Worst job of coaching I have seen on the defensive side since watching pee wee football. Archer is not getting the job done! Quick pass after quick pass, did we ever drop seven in coverage and try intercepting a ball when after the first quarter we should have known where the ball was going?
