The best thing Lee Fowler has done at NC State

We catch a lot of flak for our criticisms of Lee Fowler and the manner in which he runs the NC State Athletics Department; and much of that criticism comes from people that are too spineless or too stupid to actually publicly stake their own opinions.

But, we choose to educate ourselves on issues and then call them like we see them. Despite the ability that many Wolfpackers have to ignore facts and the realities of the world outside of the cocoon that is West Raleigh, we simply aren’t built that way. We can’t ignore the truth and have learned that one can’t just ‘wish’ things better.

I don’t have any problem actually praising Lee Fowler when he does something to deserve praise. You see, that is the problem! — the guy actually does so little; and when he finally does something it is usually so inept and incompetent that he never gives us anything to praise. That’s not our fault!

One issue where Lee Fowler deserves some legitimate praise is in his hiring of Kellie Harper earlier this spring as NC State’s women’s basketball coach. I was shocked at the time that some people were giving Fowler grief for not hiring Stephanie Glance, and now that Coach Harper is here I am more convinced than ever that she is the perfect fit to bring NC State’s Women’s Basketball program back.

With this said, you should read AJ Carr’s piece on Coach Harper that is linked here.

Truth is, being 32-year old Kellie Harper is pretty cool. So suggests her playing and coaching resume and so think State players, who have been working with their new mentor since early August.

They talk about her energy level with a wide-eyed expression. They like the passion she brings and the compassion she has shown them during this transition period.

“We love her,” said junior forward Tia Bell. “We admire that she understands the emotional situation and stress we had been through [losing coach Yow, who died of cancer in January]. She is really supportive. She’s open minded and includes us in a lot of decisions.”

Said senior guard Sharnise Beal: “She has done a good job making everybody feel comfortable; she’s very upbeat.”

On the court, Harper, a trim, fit former all-star point guard who still looks as if she could engineer the secondary break, is hands on, all over the place. In addition to teaching, she hops in team drills and works out with players in the weight room.

Please note that this praise is confined to Fowler’s choice of Kellie Harper as Head Coach; it does not extend to the overall management and guidance of the women’s basketball program. From a macro view, one cannot ignore the obvious that the Women’s Basketball program was allowed to significantly deteriorate from a top flight program to an also-ran throughout Fowler’s decade in Raleigh.

It also ignores that Fowler couldn’t find the energy, motivation or competency to hire Harper in March (instead of late April) and thereby allow her a fighting chance to do some recruiting. Whatever the excuses and rationality for moving painfully slow without an ounce of urgency are unacceptable and serve to reinforce the obvious conclusion that Fowler & NC State seem to never be able to understand the consequences of each of their actions.

Both of the aforementioned items exemplify why Fowler is so incompetent and rudderless as a ‘leader’ of a $40 – $50 million business. But, on the ultimate hiring of Kellie Harper I think the man finally got something right.

I’m really excited to see Coach Harper and the Lady Wolfpack lace it up this season! Given the emotional nature of this hire, I think Lee did the best he could with the transition.

By all indications, a great hire for the wolfpack. She seems to be the type of coach and mentor that players will be excited to play for. I look forward to watching women’s basketball this year and for years to come. She appears to have the “it” factor.

Bad golfer, good hole. That’s Fowler’s career in a nutshell.

And he gives too many mulligans too.

Really, only time will tell if it was a good hire. But I think we can all agree we like what we see so far. I think LF did as good a job as he could have done in a difficult situation. As you said, coach Glance was the sentimental favorite of the fans and the team and he had to perform due diligence (or at least act like he was for everyone’s sake). Good on him for landing Coach Harper, even if it was a month later than ideal. As for allowing the program to deteriorate, what was he to do? Fire a dying, Hall of Fame coach? We all kind of saw it happening. But, be honest. We all wanted her to succeed just that one last time, didn’t we? Now, one could make the case that LF could have diplomatically engineered a resignation. But basketball and NC State was coach Yow’s life. She wasn’t going to quit. I’m convinced she would have passed away long ago if it weren’t for the friendship, support and prayers of Wolfpack Nation. Let’s give LF his due without caveat on this one and move on.

ok, i have no idea whether or not she was a good hire. time will tell.

i am, however, ok with the concept — if lee fowler actually does something right, he should get credit for it.

one good choice, however, does not swing the balance for a tenure of incompetence and decline, i still want his butt out of town

c’mon guys we have to look past all these revenue generating sports for lee fowler’s contribution to ncsu… if i’ve said it once i’ve said it a thousand times we’ve got riflery and bass fishing teams that are top notch… http://www.collegebass.com/news/articlefiles/118-photo.jpg

as for letting the women’s b-ball program slip, how do you give a legend the boot. even losing, having yow on the sideline brought more notoriety to our women’s b-ball than anyone besides summit or geno auriemma could. we got enough bad pub for dumping v when we did, could you imagine if we gave a second coach dying of cancer their marching orders?

Really, only time will tell if it was a good hire.

Let me nitpick and take exception to this thought.

Only time will tell if Coach Harper can be a successful coach in the ACC. However, based on all of the information available this spring, she was a good hire. She is young, energetic, charismatic, and had really good success at a lower level of play. If you are not going to hire away a successful coach at the highest levels, then there is not one single piece of data that would suggest anything other than this was a good hire…..regardless of how her tenure plays out.

^^^ “One issue where Lee Fowler deserves some legitimate praise is in his hiring of Kellie Harper earlier this spring as NC State’s women’s basketball coach.”

I agree, and I even wrote about that on one of these SFN blogs back when it happened. The thing about this hiring is that Fowler would have been praised AND blasted no matter who he hired. If he had hired Glance, the Glance supporters would have loved him for it, and the ones that wanted to hold it against Fowler could have easily said he just went with the status quo.

I’m glad he hired the best coach available. What better way to honor Kay Yow than to do the right thing and hire the best person you can find? And I don’t mean to speak poorly of the deceased, but Kay really didn’t do anyone any favors by pushing Glance on us. She caused turmoil and headaches for ole Lee (not that he didn’t deserve it!), and that would have been the case whether or not we ended up hiring Glance.

But yes, Fowler did good in hiring Harper. I know, she hasn’t proven herself yet, but in the sense that she seems to be a very good hire. And he did it knowing the Glance supporters would shred him for it.

Credit where its due. Fowler had an extremely touchy and difficult situation on his hands with this hiring process and I am pleased with its outcome. Its never a bad thing to explore all of the available options in the search for the right decision, even if that went against our beloved Kay’s dying wish. I have a feeling that even though she is probably disappointed that Glance did not get her spot on the head coaches seat, she is looking down and pulling with all her heart for Kellie all the same.

Harper brings a breath of fresh air to an otherwise extremely depressing athletic department and I look forward to a day in the hopefully not to distant future when the Lady Pack is back at the top of the ACC.

I’m not convinced that Foulup really did this, that he wasn’t directed by others, it’s so out of character.

  13. ChemPack82 10/22/2009 at 7:21 PM #

    ^ditto…
    What old13 said.
I will never believe that he has made a good decision.

  14. blpack 10/22/2009 at 7:43 PM #

I think Old13 is on to it.
It should end up being a great hire, but time will tell.
At any rate let this be his last major decision. Time for change.

    Well…the man does “know basketball.”

  16. Wulfpack 10/22/2009 at 9:52 PM #

I favored Glance when it all went down and am happy to admit I was wrong. I have been nothing but impressed with Harper. The program is in very good hands. LF made a tough decision and it will benefit the Wolfpack.

What did some of you expect Coach Yow to do? That was her family, and it all came apart. She’s not wrong for feeling the way she did – she was just wrong thinking she should have any say in the matter. I wish coach Glance all the best at UT.

  17. highstick 10/22/2009 at 10:05 PM #

I’m not from Missouri, but you’re still gonna have to “show me”! Glance must have really made him mad for him to to hire her!

  18. Bubba 10/23/2009 at 9:07 AM #

In addition to Coach Harper,I think LF made an excellent choice in hiring Coach Springthorpe. He has taken over a program that hadn’t won a conference game since the 06 season and already has 2 wins and a tie.
IMO, LF is 2 for 2 for the year 🙂

Finally, we are about to build a basketball powerhouse!!!!

Every year this site does a fall sports/spring sports update to highlight (or lowlight) Fowler’s athletics department. I’d really like to see an article about how all the fall teams are doing. I know that men’s soccer has had a great season thus far, but i’m curious about the other non revenue sports.
