We are just going to turn the The Live Blog into the post-game entry for two reasons: (1) I can’t emotionally deal with putting together a post game entry and (2) BJD’s comments in the live blog and the comments from the community are fantastic (and often times hilarious). You might as well scroll through them.

Can one really describe the magnitude of any beating when the homers on the Wolfpack radio broadcast say, “Be glad you don’t have to watch this”? (as reported on Pack Pride’s message boards during the game on Saturday)

Frank Spaziani_Tom O'Brien

From ACCNow

Boston College coach Frank Spaziani is piling on the points against his old buddy, Tom O’Brien.

On fourth-and-goal from the 6-yard line, Dave Shinskie passed to Billy Flutie for a touchdown to stretch Boston College’s lead to 52-20 with 6:22 remaining. Eagles running back Montel Harris, who’s rushed for school records of 264 yards and five touchdowns, has been taken out of the game with the win safely in hand.

N.C. State hadn’t given up more than 50 points in a game since Oct. 28, 2000, in a 58-14 loss to Florida State in former coach Chuck Amato’s first season.

—————————————————————–

3:32 – The radio version of this Live Blogging will be pretty damned uninsightful. You been warned.

3:33 – One thought that I’ve been having all day is that we are fortunate to be playing this game on the road. The home fans are quite anxious (and rightfully so). A road game in a non-threatening venue takes alot of pressure off.

3:37 – Three and out for the Pack into the wind. Ruh roh.

3:40 – I hate Mack Brown, but I’m just cheering for this game to end. I’d much rather see USC face the SEC champ for the MNC, though.

3:41 – Wow, BC forced to punt. Hope we manage not to muff this one.

3:43 – Lots of excitement from the radio crew for a 3-yard catch. Thanks for getting my hopes up, Gary. Yeesh.

3:49 – 7-0 BC. Long 2 play drive. That’s more like it, Pack.

3:51 – Look on the bright side – at least we didn’t have to see it!

3:52 – Radio broadcast missed the kickoff. Good Lord. Can you say “bush league?”

3:54 – ABC graciously showing the hand shaking and ass patting after OU/Texas. Bastards. It was a shitty game. Move on, and let us watch OUR shitty game.

3:56 – I think Mack Brown almost gave Colt McCoy a tongue kiss, before settling for a neck caress and hug. Wilson scores on a sneak, game tied at 7. Maybe we’ll get to see the second half. Seriously, when have you EVER seen post-game circle jerks be televised over live scheduled games? ABC really thinks this is compelling viewing.

4:01 – Smith falls down in coverage, 60-yard TD from Shinskie. Everybody gets to be Peyton Manning for a day against State. Words can’t express how badly we suck. It was the first play viewers in the HOME CITY got to see on television, despite the noon gfame having been over for 8 minutes (plus 4 minutes of kneel downs and timeouts).

4:08 – 3rd and 1. Watch us not pick it up, then punt like morons.

4:10 – Just like I called it. So freaking predictable and pathetic.

4:16 – BC doesn’t throw downfield, and thus is forced to punt.

4:19 – Glad to see Baker being used in the passing game.

4:20 – RW gets away with an awful passing decision – should have been an easy pick.

4:22 – 4th and 2 from the 22. Easy call to go for it.

4:23 – It was an easy call, but still surprised we went for it. First down, Pack.

4:25 – I would go for it here, too. But we won’t.

4:26 – Remember this gutless decision when we’re down 28-10 at the half. I expect this will be the turning point of the game.

4:33 – Wow, Morgan with a well-timed hit breaks up a pass. There’s a first time for everything.

4:34 – State’s most effective 3rd and long defense – the blatant drop.

4:37 – Wilson makes his first really good play of the game. 1st and 10 inside the 20. Nice duck by Spencer to avoid concussion redux.

4:40 – Another stupid field goal. Very, very frustrating.

4:45 – Eagles driving against more very soft defense.

4:47 – 21-13, BC. Tailback walks into the end zone. 3 minutes left for the Wolfpack to answer. It’s critical to do so, as BC gets the ball first in the second half.

4:53 – Well, at least BC shouldn’t get the ball back with time to score.

4:55 – BC’s blitz gets picked up, but still nobody is open. Pitiful.

4:57 – Wilson overthrow is picked, BC does have enough time to score after all. Awful stuff from the awful Pack, Act III.

4:59 – 3rd and 10, BC runs up the middle. And picks up TWENTY.

5:01 – Another drop by an Eagle wideout negates a TD. Pack living on borrowed time. And barely living.

5:06 – No way was BC set before the clock kill. But no flag, and the field goal is…good. 24-13 is your halftime score. I’m pretty disgusted, and second half updates might be a bit less regular (I also have a headache).

5:31 – Third and long, no coverage or pressure by the Pack. Lather, rinse, repeat. This season is over, folks. We’re just playing out the string at this point.

5:34 – Third and four is converted easily, for some variety.

5:38 – 2nd and goal from 10 (after our first Willie Young sighting), BC runs up the middle untouched for six. Today, we aren’t even getting into position to miss tackles. We just stand around holding our nads. 31-13. Glad we got those field goals back when this was a semi-competitive game.

5:50 – 38-13 now. Yes, it was possible to play worse than we did against Duke. I may pop in with a random insult here or there, but this ends the regular live blogging. Go take a walk or something.

6:02 – (By LRM) I’m gonna be really pissed if all those BC fans were right about TOB. (Sorry BJD, I couldn’t resist)

We need to fire Mike Archer and let one of our other defensive coaches take over till the end of the year. At seasons end…Amato will be available and we should hire him to be our defensive coordinator. He’ll do a good job, and he’ll help in our recruiting. The question will be if O’Brien can keep him from coming out and raising everybody’s expectations before the season.

On another note…I think that the scape goat thing sucks for Archer, but in actuality that’s just part of being a DC. Archer was our second or third choice in the beginning if I remember correctly, and we all wondered why he was chosen. My Dad and I were talking yesterday during the game about the fact that every time we’ve got a top quarterback…our defense falters. Think about it…we did it to Gabriel, Rivers, and now to Wilson. We need to be proactive in fixing our defense.

Lastly, I would like to say that for the first time in 28 years…I didn’t donate to the Wolfpack Club. I explained to Bobby Purcell why I hadn’t done so…and told him that when the university decides that Lee Fowler is not a virus (we don’t have to just sit back and watch Fowler run his course), and we move in another direction…that I would be happy to write a check and make up for the money I withheld.

I was at the game yesterday, and have been to all NCSU/BC games over the past 3 years, and what is so depressing to me is that a sparse, lethargic fanbase which is BC still gets a better product on the field/court than NCSU.

Our fanbase is loyal to a fault.

I think it might be time for me to pick a successful pro team to follow.

    Two comments….

I do OBJECT to the term “homers” regarding the WP Radio Network… They really are a good team and very professional. If you look up the term, “homer”, there will be a picture of Woody Durham (UNX Fame) there.

Second…CHUCK THE CHEST COMING BACK? I think we ought to try for a REAL DC…Maybe Lane Kiffin will have to put his dad out to pasture. There is probably a white steed still around so Monte can come riding back in…

Here is a thought for all of you. If Obrien was at an SEC school other than maybe Vanderbilt and Kentucky, would he be back next year.

  5. slushy1975 10/18/2009 at 11:06 AM #

Let’s not throw the team or its coaching staff under the bus, please. I’m frustrated like the rest of us but think the NC State football team did not have the “foundation” that Tom O’Brien says we need but we’re building. That means a couple of years of really good but really young players. We are going to be a deep team and I think quite good.

Build a system that delivers and recruits will notice. The O’Brien/Bible reputation with quarterbacks has gotten us some great signal callers, the OL coaching earned us some solid recruits there. Brick by brick, folks.

My dear Atlanta Braves had young players in the late 1980’s only to turn the corner in 1991 when those young players “got it.” Paul Johnson, mentioned earlier, is a great coach who inherited a very good base of players. We’ll get it. Teams that have quick turnarounds by firing coaches tend have deep national success in recent years. Spurrier to Zook (great recruiting) to Meyer. We’ve not found our Spurrier…or should I say he’s not build us to that stage, yet.

I’m ticked off but can see the forest among the trees. Throw rocks but support the fellas overall. Assess the ability of position coaches at year’s end.

“If Obrien was at an SEC school other than maybe Vanderbilt and Kentucky, would he be back next year.”

Hell no. In fact, at some of them, he would have already been fired. This is why we are NC State. We put up with it until there is hope.

  7. Wolfpack704 10/18/2009 at 11:20 AM #

I’m sorry, but if we want to be considered as a relevant football program, we need to act like one. 3 years is a fair amount of time to judge a football coach at a relevant program. O’Brien would be on the hot seat with this performance almost anywhere else – we should take tremendous pride in our loyalty, but we should also be loyal to the university and program first, and coach second.

He’s a nice guy, he’s run a pretty clean program, a nice win here or there, but the bottom line is that we should demand more. I don’t know if our job is attractive enough for Tuberville, Gruden, or even Cowher – hell, i don’t even know if they are the right people for the job … but here’s what I do know – a resume showing losses in the first 3 ACC games to Wake, Duke, and BC (with Clemson, @FSU, and @VT remaining on the schedule) and the highlight being a Pizza bowl appearance in 3 years shouldn’t warrant an interview.

We should demand more out of our Athletics department, especially in football and basketball. As far as donations go, I’m still going to donate money to the university, but I’ll probably shift my donations to specific initiatives. Who knows, maybe i’ll buy a few circuit boards for the electrical engineering students.

It’s a catch-22 – you want to support the program by selling out the games and donating money to the program, but I doubt our administration is paying a lot of attention to these blogs – Once they see a dip in attendance and income, they’ll take us a little more seriously.

  8. JeremyH 10/18/2009 at 11:21 AM #

our defense is like that cauliflower ear that Kimbo Slice beats on until it explodes for the victory. Talk about getting exposed. I played middle school football, and although I was small, I knew the correct way to tackle and bring down a player of any size. You need to go low on their body and rip through with your arms, wrapping them up. Our defensive players are just…. ugh

  9. LRM 10/18/2009 at 11:32 AM #

Look, I’m not defending TOB here, because the atrocity of a product he’s put onto the field this season is wholly unacceptable, and regardless of whether it’s him or his coaches, he’s ultimately responsible.

But Urban Meyer ain’t walking through that door.

“I have emotionally invested my last Saturday to this team.”

What took you so long? I gave up after losing to DUKE. We lost to DUKE. We lost to DUKE. We lost to DUKE. Still not over that.

I remember several weeks ago I was watching the Clemson and BC game with my buddy who’s a Clemson alum. Clemson destroyed BC. I told him it wasn’t a big deal, that BC sucked this year. Haha. I’m sure he’s laughing at me now. Add a cherry on top after Clemson destroyed Wake yesterday.

  11. packalum44 10/18/2009 at 12:32 PM #

To think we could of had Paul Johnson. We are pathetic.

  12. old13 10/18/2009 at 1:05 PM #

I posted this on the forums, but thought this a good place for it as well.

OK I’ll play the devil’s advocate. I have no idea where TOB may or may not take Wolfpack FB. But consider this:

    1. It takes more than 2.5 years to build a FB program, especially one with as bare a cupboard as TOB inherited. (Even before the season started, many on SFN were saying that 2010 or, more probably, 2011 would be the first year to expect a run at the upper levels of the ACC.) There is also a significantly different D philosophy with TOB from CTC. Seems like at least 5-6 years is needed to have the program “built” with established RSSrs from the first recruiting class (which would not necessarily include the first class TOB signed because he arrived at NCSU only a few weeks before signing day.) And those RSSrs may or may not be nearly as talented as following classes.

    2. The D backfield, and LBs to some extent, have been depleted greatly by injuries, transfers, etc. All that are available have played I believe.

    3. There are 11 (ELEVEN) Fr/RSFr in the two-deep posted for the BC game plus some walk-ons because we are very thin at some positions. (And about half of the OL listed on the roster are Fr/RSFr.) I’m sure that there are some options for burning RSs in addition to those Frs who are already playing. But seems like that’s a choice between MAYBE winning with Fr now or growing the team for the future.

As for the D’s showing the past three games, I would think that all the above contribute to that. No matter what is called, it still takes knowing assignments and execution to be effective. And in many cases, different players are probably more suited for different D systems.

Now having said all of that, I would also note that TOB built some pretty good OLs for UVa. He also did what most on here would call a very good job in building the BC program which was and is still in place after TOB’s departure. (Think about why BC has beaten us the last three years.) So his record would indicate that there could be good reason for optimism in the long term with him.

I guess that at this point, when I consider the above, I have to call myself undecided. And I do think that it is way too soon to try to decide. Maybe it takes a step or two backward now and then in building a program to make possible those critical forward steps necessary to get to the ultimate goal. I don’t know. But given 1, 2 and 3 above, I’m not convinced that any other coach would be doing any better at this point.

I will say that at this point, good or bad, TOB represents my best hope for anything to improve in Wolfpack athletics in the near future unless the AD is replaced.

  13. Gene 10/18/2009 at 1:25 PM #

Bible and the offense seem O.K. Mike Archer and the defense seem to be the problem. Archer was a questionable hire. He has had some experience and success as a coach, but his defenses at Kentucky weren’t world beaters.

I wouldn’t fire O’Brien, but I’d hint that Archer has to go and start the search for Archer’s replacement now.

  14. tuckerdorm1983 10/18/2009 at 8:46 PM #

don’t nobody need to fire nobody, yall all get worked up. Next thing you’ll be saying is go over to TOB and tar and feather him and ride him out of town on a rail. C’mon give the man a chance.

  15. GAWolf 10/18/2009 at 9:00 PM #

Very few people here are saying fire TOB. But most everyone, I think, is okay with him firing Archer. We need some relief.

  16. JaxPackMan 10/18/2009 at 10:05 PM #

Coach O’B is clearly shell shocked. He hasn’t let on that the team would be world beaters this year. But at the same time I got the feeling from his pre-season comments that if they worked hard and didn’t make many unforced errors they would be competitive.

Russell Wilson does not appear to suffering from Sophmoritis, a common disease of Freshman phenom quarterbacks. The defense played well against the Game Hens and the Arm Pitts. I don’t really count the high school teams we played. So what happened against Wake? Don’t the know what Wake’s going do by now? Are they all learning disabled and need Ritalin to function? Did their prescriptions run out?

The real issue with me is that after three bad games it has gotten worse with no signs of improvement. And the offense is beginning to play tight because they think they have to score every play.

TOB keeps saying that guys on kick/punt return coverage are taking on blockers with the wrong shoulder which takes them out of their lane and thus out of the play. Well HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU HAVE COACH A PLAYER ABOUT THAT? Maybe after the player runs the stadium steps about a 50 times he’ll remember the correct blocking method.

The coaches are pretty close to losing this team unless they can figure out a way to win a game some how, some way.

    I don’t see a bowl this year.

  17. robzucc 10/18/2009 at 11:21 PM #

Well I’ll go on record. You can quote me right now October 18, 2009 as
saying, he seems to be a great guy but, see ya later! Some of us fans are no longer at an age anymore to be saying give this guy a chance. First of all, when you have seen this story before, you see tendencies of an approach that reminds of things you bought into more than once or twice before. The approach of it taking a while compared to success at
an almost lightening result can be argued with many programs but, we are not one of them and I’ll tell you why. It was stated earlier that we could play certain players like freshman without RS them and maybe win now. Well I have news for you, whatever TOB’s timeline is to build his forever winning squads have problems that come with it. One can be justified as not really a problem but I tend to differ. It is, if we don’t win now then what kind of marketing tool would TOB use to bring in recruits that witness this ongoing embarresment being done to this program. I don’t see players wanting to come to a school(good ones) when the coach who is recruiting is in year 4 or 5 and is at that point when he is just a few years away from leaving anyhow. Isn’t that what TOB stated? He would probally coach maybe 10 yrs! Well that leads me to TOB leaves State and lets say he does become somewhat successful. A new coach is going to come here and continues the success because he built it up! That doesn’t guaranty anything unless the coach has a great track record and even then who knows.
My hold point here is we are a win now fanbase given what State fans have had to endure in BB or FB and what I get from TOB is I, am going to get this FB program to the Victory Gates. Give me a break! This is NC STATE and whether you need a crash course on how most of us feel after a win I suggest you play the talent now! If you have a chance to win then do it and they will come sooner oppose to later.

  18. packof81 10/19/2009 at 12:50 AM #

The last couple of years, we had a mediocre football team and a crappy basketball team. Now both are crappy. Both of NC State’s revenue sports are wallowing in excrement with no end in sight.

  19. emr62 10/19/2009 at 6:35 AM #

NC State has without a doubt the worst athletic teams in the ACC.

  20. Wolf74 10/19/2009 at 7:47 AM #

“NC State has without a doubt the worst athletic teams in the ACC.”

Which is why I say FIRE Fowler! Don’t fire any head coach until that AD is fired and out of Raleigh. Do not allow him to resign. He has had his chances to do that. If we allow him to resign, that is just a sign that nothing has changed, we are the good guys. NO! FIRE him and make a statement that incompetence and losing is out at NCSU and the next AD better be ready to hit the ground running and clean out all the apathy in that athletic department! And I don’t mean just the coaches. The next AD should evaluate every trainer, secretary, media relations person, student trainer and coach to determine if they are contributing to winning championships. If not, send them packing. This is more than just a couple of coaches, this is an athletic department that has played the good ole boy song for way too long and is infested with losing!

Then the AD should have a sit down with the Wolfpack Club!

I went camping in the mountains this weekend.
My zipper broke Friday night and I got maybe an hour or two of miserable sleep.
And yet it was better than watching our “football” team play.

I think it is irrelevant if we fire TOB or not. Something is wrong and IMO it is no fixable.

  22. NCSU88 10/19/2009 at 9:27 AM #

I have not seen any discussion on leadership among the players. I alluded to it during the game blog about Nate Irving’s role since he has been sidelined. I have not been able to attend a game for some time but try to catch them on TV and chat online with fans during game. What I am not seeing (from my perspective) is leadership on the field.

SFN readers and posters have hashed and re-hashed TOB, CTC and Lee Fowler, but what about the players? Is there a leader? Who do they turn to? Do they care anymore? Anyone have some locker room insight? Where is the pride? Are the smoke and fireworks before the game and grand celebrations after simply making a tackle (maybe not a good choice) or beating up on Div II schools really necessary? I read the discussion last week on Acumen and that was pretty spot on. The players need a spark, something to re-light the fire. Which player can step up and lead this team?

  23. packman2013 10/19/2009 at 11:29 AM #

I sent a E-mail to interm Chancellor Woodward last week about Lee Fowler and I how I think our athetic programs had been a embarrassment over the last several years.
    This was his response-

“Thanks for sharing your views with me, Mr. Noble. I, too, am disappointed in the performance of several of our teams, including those that are most visible.”

    Jim Woodward

The reason I shared this is because I have seen on the message boards where others have been sending him E-mails and they said his responses have said that firing Lee Fowler is not his job that it is something for the new Chancellor to do….Just thought I would share what he sent back…maybe things are starting to shake up for Fowler.

    Is Mike O’Cain available?

  25. elvislives 10/19/2009 at 11:58 AM #

I’d like to ask the NC State football team to be patient while I decide whether I will ever consider them worthy of my attention again.
