We are just going to turn the The Live Blog into the post-game entry for two reasons: (1) I can’t emotionally deal with putting together a post game entry and (2) BJD’s comments in the live blog and the comments from the community are fantastic (and often times hilarious). You might as well scroll through them.

Can one really describe the magnitude of any beating when the homers on the Wolfpack radio broadcast say, “Be glad you don’t have to watch this”? (as reported on Pack Pride’s message boards during the game on Saturday)

Frank Spaziani_Tom O'Brien

From ACCNow

Boston College coach Frank Spaziani is piling on the points against his old buddy, Tom O’Brien.

On fourth-and-goal from the 6-yard line, Dave Shinskie passed to Billy Flutie for a touchdown to stretch Boston College’s lead to 52-20 with 6:22 remaining. Eagles running back Montel Harris, who’s rushed for school records of 264 yards and five touchdowns, has been taken out of the game with the win safely in hand.

N.C. State hadn’t given up more than 50 points in a game since Oct. 28, 2000, in a 58-14 loss to Florida State in former coach Chuck Amato’s first season.

—————————————————————–

3:32 – The radio version of this Live Blogging will be pretty damned uninsightful. You been warned.

3:33 – One thought that I’ve been having all day is that we are fortunate to be playing this game on the road. The home fans are quite anxious (and rightfully so). A road game in a non-threatening venue takes alot of pressure off.

3:37 – Three and out for the Pack into the wind. Ruh roh.

3:40 – I hate Mack Brown, but I’m just cheering for this game to end. I’d much rather see USC face the SEC champ for the MNC, though.

3:41 – Wow, BC forced to punt. Hope we manage not to muff this one.

3:43 – Lots of excitement from the radio crew for a 3-yard catch. Thanks for getting my hopes up, Gary. Yeesh.

3:49 – 7-0 BC. Long 2 play drive. That’s more like it, Pack.

3:51 – Look on the bright side – at least we didn’t have to see it!

3:52 – Radio broadcast missed the kickoff. Good Lord. Can you say “bush league?”

3:54 – ABC graciously showing the hand shaking and ass patting after OU/Texas. Bastards. It was a shitty game. Move on, and let us watch OUR shitty game.

3:56 – I think Mack Brown almost gave Colt McCoy a tongue kiss, before settling for a neck caress and hug. Wilson scores on a sneak, game tied at 7. Maybe we’ll get to see the second half. Seriously, when have you EVER seen post-game circle jerks be televised over live scheduled games? ABC really thinks this is compelling viewing.

4:01 – Smith falls down in coverage, 60-yard TD from Shinskie. Everybody gets to be Peyton Manning for a day against State. Words can’t express how badly we suck. It was the first play viewers in the HOME CITY got to see on television, despite the noon gfame having been over for 8 minutes (plus 4 minutes of kneel downs and timeouts).

4:08 – 3rd and 1. Watch us not pick it up, then punt like morons.

4:10 – Just like I called it. So freaking predictable and pathetic.

4:16 – BC doesn’t throw downfield, and thus is forced to punt.

4:19 – Glad to see Baker being used in the passing game.

4:20 – RW gets away with an awful passing decision – should have been an easy pick.

4:22 – 4th and 2 from the 22. Easy call to go for it.

4:23 – It was an easy call, but still surprised we went for it. First down, Pack.

4:25 – I would go for it here, too. But we won’t.

4:26 – Remember this gutless decision when we’re down 28-10 at the half. I expect this will be the turning point of the game.

4:33 – Wow, Morgan with a well-timed hit breaks up a pass. There’s a first time for everything.

4:34 – State’s most effective 3rd and long defense – the blatant drop.

4:37 – Wilson makes his first really good play of the game. 1st and 10 inside the 20. Nice duck by Spencer to avoid concussion redux.

4:40 – Another stupid field goal. Very, very frustrating.

4:45 – Eagles driving against more very soft defense.

4:47 – 21-13, BC. Tailback walks into the end zone. 3 minutes left for the Wolfpack to answer. It’s critical to do so, as BC gets the ball first in the second half.

4:53 – Well, at least BC shouldn’t get the ball back with time to score.

4:55 – BC’s blitz gets picked up, but still nobody is open. Pitiful.

4:57 – Wilson overthrow is picked, BC does have enough time to score after all. Awful stuff from the awful Pack, Act III.

4:59 – 3rd and 10, BC runs up the middle. And picks up TWENTY.

5:01 – Another drop by an Eagle wideout negates a TD. Pack living on borrowed time. And barely living.

5:06 – No way was BC set before the clock kill. But no flag, and the field goal is…good. 24-13 is your halftime score. I’m pretty disgusted, and second half updates might be a bit less regular (I also have a headache).

5:31 – Third and long, no coverage or pressure by the Pack. Lather, rinse, repeat. This season is over, folks. We’re just playing out the string at this point.

5:34 – Third and four is converted easily, for some variety.

5:38 – 2nd and goal from 10 (after our first Willie Young sighting), BC runs up the middle untouched for six. Today, we aren’t even getting into position to miss tackles. We just stand around holding our nads. 31-13. Glad we got those field goals back when this was a semi-competitive game.

5:50 – 38-13 now. Yes, it was possible to play worse than we did against Duke. I may pop in with a random insult here or there, but this ends the regular live blogging. Go take a walk or something.

6:02 – (By LRM) I’m gonna be really pissed if all those BC fans were right about TOB. (Sorry BJD, I couldn’t resist)

^ Then they should hurry to hire a new chancellor before NCSU gets kicked out of the ACC for non-participation!

A few interesting statistics … I pulled this together really quickly on a back of a napkin, so I’m not guaranteeing accuracy …

Most Points Allowed since beginning of 2000 season (excluding one 2OT game vs. Ohio State in 03 and one 3OT game vs. FSU in 03):
    1) 58, 58-14 loss to FSU in 2000 (Amato)***
    2) 52, 52-20 loss to BC on Saturday (TOB)
    3) 49, 49-28 loss to Duke last Saturday (TOB)

Largest Margin of Loss since start of 2000 season:
    4) 32, 52-20 loss to BC on Saturday (TOB)
    5) 31, 41-10 loss to S. Florida in 2008 (TOB)

*** FSU went 10-1 in the regular season that year, lost to Oklahoma in the National Championship Game (Orange Bowl) ***

    Also ironic …
    – Our 2 best players (in my opinion) are Russell Wilson and Nate Irving (injured) – both were recruited by Amato and staff
    – Here’s what BC has done since TOB left:
    – 2007: Went 9-3, lost ACC Title Game
    – 2008: Went 9-3, lost ACC Title Game
    – 2009: Beat our ass 52-20

I’m not saying Amato was a better coach – I actually thought he was a horrible coach. However, i do think we had more athletic players, especially on defense – our athleticism kept us in a lot of games that Amato and staff eventually lost for us. This year, it looks like we’re getting beat both mentally and physically.

I understand why we hired TOB, but these stats don’t lie … outside of the 58-14 loss to a stacked FSU team 9 years ago, TOB has coached our 4 worst defeats. Part of this is Amato fault – TOB inherited some problems, but isn’t he here to “coach ’em up” and keep us in the game? I have to think he deserves at least half of the blame.

Thank God we have a bye next Saturday.

patience is a virtue and I believe it will pay off here. No use to abandoned ship. The other teams figured out how to defeat our secret weapon which is RW running down the field and the coaches wanted to protect him and do not call plays that let him run. Once that little enterprise is shut down we are toast. Just show some patience.

  4. Avid109 10/17/2009 at 10:12 PM #

“Just show some patience?” How long have we waited since our last ACC title in football?

Any long-term plan for the football program depends on signs of progress. A team that is regressing and getting soundly beaten on a regular basis is not going to be able to recruit top-notch players.

Just got around to reading today’s N&O….Should have known….Cauldon Tudor keeps predicting our “wins”….as do the WRAL boys. Really bummer. Tomorrow’s N&O will be NASTY….

Congrats to Robert Bell for a great game returning kicks. Thanks ABC

How the hell is O’Brien going to make a highlight reel for his show out of this travesty? At least our band performed well last week against Duke. Can’t even say that now.

  8. NCSU84 10/17/2009 at 10:48 PM #

When does TOB’s show air? On what Raleigh station? UNC and Duke shows are on Sunday mornings back to back. I have never seen TOB’s show as I cannot find it – I guess that says alot about our program. However, I would like to see the show THIS week.

And I’m pretty happy we didn’t hire that bum Paul Johnson when we had the chance… when he was nearly begging to come… when a significant chunk of the fanbase knew exactly who he was and what he would do for our program…

  12. redterror16 10/17/2009 at 11:29 PM #

I vote we make Yakety Sax the new NC State fight song!

  13. redterror16 10/17/2009 at 11:31 PM #

play it every time the D comes out

  14. 61Packer 10/17/2009 at 11:47 PM #

Concerning the execution of the Wolfpack’s defense, I’m in favor of it.

  15. Broccoman 10/17/2009 at 11:49 PM #

We should just onside kick every time now.

  16. wolfdog1 10/18/2009 at 12:25 AM #

I can’t believe what wolfonthehill said about Paul Johnson at Georgia Tech. This is the mentality that will keep us in the hole forever and NC State athletics will always be on the bottom rung. Mr Johnson just beat Virgian Tech and how long has he been at Georgia Tech. How pathetic for NC State. I hate to say this but most of the NC State fan base wouldn’t know a good solid football coach coming down the middle of the road in the broad open daylight. Wait till Carolina stomps our …..about 50 points at home. Oh I forgot we need to be patient. I will spend my dollar doing a variety of things worthwhile and which makes some sense of reality, not a day dream. What is the IQ here???????????? about TOB

  17. turfpack 10/18/2009 at 12:39 AM #

I fell like crawling under a rock. I did -found are athletic programs under it.
If it smell’s like sh%$ and has flies it’s usually sh%$ or our football season.
I’m out -I’ll stick to watching my son’s play college football atleast they win!

11:35 on a Sunday night! people only have to go to work on Monday. It’s
not about the DVR its about where they put us. Wolfdog1 I don’t even
consider these people with this be patient statement. At first I would
get mad at them then I would respond to them now I feel sorry for them.
Like I said earlier Archer better be gone by tuesday and should have
been fired as soon as the wheels touched RDU airport. Some of the students on TWW somehow found Mike Archers phone number and email address and posted both during the game. Has anybody seen that?
It doesn’t matter if firing Archer now wouldn’t change things but at
least another assistant might have a fresh idea to finish out the year.
But, it does matter that O’brien start acting like he gives a crap plus have the balls to make a move like that. This isn’t the Military
where we all go down with the ship together. Most of us have spent hard
earn money in tough times to see this!

    Another typical NCSU sports weekend:

    Rifle team falls to Nebraska
    Volleyball swept by Duke
    Soccer falls to Wake
Football embarrassed again, this time by BC

I saw this TOB quote in the N&O:

“We’re going to be a good football team. Sooner rather than later would be good. We’re not going to take any shortcuts. We’re going to do it the right way and build a strong foundation, so that when this thing turns, we’re going to win a lot of games and win for a long time.”

I do believe I’ve heard this before from Fowler when talking about HWSNBN around year 5 or 6.

  21. Dogbreath 10/18/2009 at 8:37 AM #

    Iowa State by ass.

We are more like Kentucky State or Georgia State. Perhaps Virginia State.

How can Tom Obrien not be fazed by this. I am sick and tired of the same damn excuses. We just got our @sses kicked by Duke and BC. What happened to our football program. It seems Tom Obrien has come in and made it worse. At least one thing Amato did do when he recruited, he brought in athletes. Not only that, we did seem to be in most games with Amato, the only problem was he sucked with offense. We have always had a respectable defense, but not now. Amato knows defense, Obrien knows the bank he cashes his check at for the rest of the year. Come on, wake up people, Obrien is done, they come to NC State to retire. It is closer to Myrtle Beach!

  24. Wulfpack 10/18/2009 at 9:06 AM #

I’ll believe it when I see it. The past three weeks, we’ve been outscored 131 – 72. I don’t care who you’re playing, that’s just plain miserable. It’s a sign that the defense has no clue, they’ve laid down and died three weeks in a row.

When TOB came to State, I was ecstatic. I’m beginning to think that all of those BC fans that didn’t want him anymore were right. Just look at what they’ve done since he’s left. And just look at what we’ve become since he got here. And that’s WITH an All ACC Quarterback. Hard to argue at this stage. We’re losing that bet.

Sad thing is, we haven’t hit bottom yet. After the last two years, we will hear the same old song of we will go back to square one and improve during the bye week etc. etc. Of course,it looks like we won’t. We look like Sids second year team, as someone mentioned above, totally lost with no direction and no idea of where to go or what to do.

Follow a crappy football season with an equally crappy basketball season and woila it just got worse.

Remember money talks, lack of money talks louder.
