2010 ACC Bowl Line-up

October 8th
New announcement today that the Emerald Bowl has been replaced by the Independence Bowl in the ACC’s bowl priority. The N&O has more.

The conference’s affiliation with the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco will be replaced by a new deal with the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. The ACC parted ways with the Gator Bowl earlier in the week. In August, the ACC announced a deal with the Sun Bowl, which effectively replaces the Gator.

The Independence Bowl will pit the seventh ACC selection against a Mountain West Conference opponent, according to the Shreveport Times.

The following chart is from the N&O and details next year’s bowl order:

ACC Bowls

October 7th
The Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando has been elevated to the number three spot in the ACC’s contracted bowl selection order for 2010 through 2013, conference officials announced Wednesday.

That position behind the BCS/Orange Bowl and the Chick-fil-A Bowl previously had been occupied by the Gator Bowl, whose longstanding relationship with the ACC is in jeopardy.

ACC associate commissioner for football Michael Kelly said it appears now that the Gator Bowl won’t have a contracted tie with the ACC. Kelly said ACC officials had rejected a proposal by Gator Bowl officials to eliminate the “one-win rule” from the conference’s bowl selection process.

That rule states that when a bowl selects its ACC representative, it must choose a team with a conference record that’s within one win of the team with the best available ACC record.

While Shreveport is a pretty dumpy city, it does have the attraction of the casinos if you like that activity. It’s also driving distance from Houston, so I kind of like that move. Losing the Gator Bowl is a huge black eye for the ACC.

ECU does not belong in the ACC under any circumstances. They are inferior academically and athletically. BC is worlds better than ECU in so many areas it isn’t even funny. If your only argument is “fan support”, drop it.

^ Since conferences live and breath on fan support, it is silly to say “drop it” – no offense.

Athletic conferences are about sports, not academics. I’ve never been to a football game where the fans were celebrating the collective SAT of their team’s players.

And as much as I hate to say this, ECU has the same academic standards as the other two UNC schools in the system, in case you have forgotten. Yes, they would have to match the ACC rules on admissions, that is true. But that’s an easy trade.

So basically, I think that the attitude here about ECU in the ACC is the same parochial attitude that UNC fans have towards NC State. They say “Moo U” towards us. We say “ECTC” to them. We hate and I am sure ECU fans love being patronized too.

Take a look at BC’s impact on the media in their home market. It is negligible. Take a look at BC’s impact on the conference’s bottom line. It is considerable. As in considerably negative.

If it wasn’t negative, why would there be a stupid one-win conference bowl selection rule to insure that BC doesn’t drop like a stone in the selection process. Bowls are about money. Money means fans in the seats. BC doesn’t bring the fans, so no bowl wants them, because they don’t want to lose money.

Sure, it’s a real win to trade Jacksonville for Shreveport. At least in Jacksonville, you could easily drive there. And there is plenty to do if you are smart enough to know where to go, places like Jax Beach, or St. Aug, or the World Golf HOF complex. Shreveport…well…let’s just say it ain’t no tourist destination.

Even the teams with medium-high traveling reputation will NOT travel to El Paso in the numbers they would to Jacksonville, because you have to fly there. Remember our trip to the lame Copper Bowl in Arizona (not that far from El Paso)? We struggled to sell even 5000 tickets, IIRC…

I can tell you with certainty the admission standards at ecu vs. that of unc/ncsu are vastly different. They may say they are the same, but in reality ECU is the school we send our kids to when they can’t get in anywhere else. That’s for a non-athlete.
