New announcement today that the Emerald Bowl has been replaced by the Independence Bowl in the ACC’s bowl priority. The N&O has more.

The conference’s affiliation with the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco will be replaced by a new deal with the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. The ACC parted ways with the Gator Bowl earlier in the week. In August, the ACC announced a deal with the Sun Bowl, which effectively replaces the Gator.

The Independence Bowl will pit the seventh ACC selection against a Mountain West Conference opponent, according to the Shreveport Times.

The Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando has been elevated to the number three spot in the ACC’s contracted bowl selection order for 2010 through 2013, conference officials announced Wednesday.

That position behind the BCS/Orange Bowl and the Chick-fil-A Bowl previously had been occupied by the Gator Bowl, whose longstanding relationship with the ACC is in jeopardy.

ACC associate commissioner for football Michael Kelly said it appears now that the Gator Bowl won’t have a contracted tie with the ACC. Kelly said ACC officials had rejected a proposal by Gator Bowl officials to eliminate the “one-win rule” from the conference’s bowl selection process.

That rule states that when a bowl selects its ACC representative, it must choose a team with a conference record that’s within one win of the team with the best available ACC record.

    ACC officials had rejected a proposal by Gator Bowl officials to eliminate the “one-win rule”

    So the Gator Bowl is the first to rebel against the BC rule. I wonder how long the ACC will be able to keep this in place?

    Someone remind me again, why did the ACC invite BC to join?

    I hope there was something more to it than gaining a TV audience in a metro area where pro sports dominate and ACC football is an afterthought.

    I’m sure I’m missing something, so I’ll ask… can someone please tell me how BC has helped the conference?

    It seems the better their teams are, the more they hurt the conference. Even the relative success of their basketball team seems to take off some of the luster of the conference.

    1. Fenway for ACC Baseball tourney.
    two were fired for scheduling snafu.
    2. ACC bigshots hit Boston with expense accounts.
    3. Boston for basketball tourney?
    Swofford’s living in the past.
    4. demographics promise. “i’ll call you.” right.
    5. last, but not least: ESPN/ABC/Disney.

    First thought… who cares? If the conference gets good enough, it will take care of itself. No excuses right now. Bowls want money.

    Second thought… Swofford will go nowhere… count the houndreds of millions… (blows)

    Third thought… MatSci94; initally Syracuse… and one other I forget. But, BC was probably the best all around choice. Purely hindsight, but they have represented the conference well since joining.

    Final thought: I’m popping this in this post because I simply can’t reply to everything. I am both flattered and flabbergasted that SaccoV and others appreciated my baseball on the forums. I now feel bad that I slacked off at the end of the year. I apologize to the community for that; I’ll have more time next season.

    For curious folks… Wilson will be drafted now in about the 40th round (baseball). If that. It’s a money question now; does he need it– and given his family background probably not. So he will be back next year… at State, although it may be in only one sport. But whichever one he choses, he should be supported and not questioned.

    I realize that the bowls’ main concern, especially considering the current economic climate, is making money and remaining viable, and turning a profit if at all possible. I also realize that BC has a (well-deserved) horrible reputation for traveling well to bowl games.

    But looking at this from a slightly different angle, and changing the phrasing a little bit, it seems almost laughable that a bowl organization would threaten to nix the deal with the conference unless they are given the right/opportunity to choose a worse team than they currently are allowed to do.

    And don’t start trying to educate me and tell me I don’t understand, and its not that simple. I do understand and I know its not that simple.

    But it still sounds funny when you say it that way.

    How many draft rounds are there in baseball? 40 round seems like a ton
    I thought he was higher than that coming out of HS. I want to say I heard 4th round but cannot remember for sure.

    there are as many rounds as the teams want I think. Wasn’t Piazza a 65th round pick, as a favor to his dad?

    As for Wilson, right now I’d say his pro football chances are better then his baseball chances, though I’d definitely learn the Canadian-American Exchange rates if I was him, I’d see him having a long future in the Great White North if NFL doesn’t give him a chance.

    If hee declares in both sports- the Panthers should spend a low round pick on him no matter what- they have nothing to lose QB-wise right now.

    Baseball used to have 60+ rounds (Piazza was a 62nd round selection). Recently it has been a 50 round draft.

    Wilson could significantly improve his draft standing, but must put up better offensive numbers. His batting average, power and rate stats were pretty bad for… drum roll please… an aluminum bat wielder.

    Staying on the Gator Bowl….

    Gator Bowl is on New Years Day plus a 2.5M buyout.
    Champs bowl is inferior – bottom-line. Swafford cannot spin this as a positive. Plus the Gator Bowl has been a long time partner. WTF.

    Forget about BC, Wake, UVa’s protection of thier inability to get fans to travel and go back to the bargaining table.

    I agree, wolfpacktexx. As long as the bowls are just a “holiday bonus” for teams, who cares? Let them decide their pecking order and pick whatever team they want to pick. Bowls are about money and a fun bonus game for the fans, and nothing else. Unless you’re in the one that counts.

    Texx spelled it out and the old adage of “ye shall reap what ye sow” is being felt over in the Grandover offices of the ACC.

    They probably are on their knees praying that Miami and VT go undefeated the rest of the year in football, giving the conference some needed credibility.

    As for BC, it didn’t make sense then, it doesn’t make sense now and we should quietly approach any other school — even ECU — to replace them.

    The Gator usually provides a much more lame opponent then some of the others. However, I would take one Gator Bowl appearance over two Champs Bowl appearances any day.

    Shreveport? I’ve never been but man I’m not super excieted about that option. Hell, at least in San Fran you could get some good food and shoot the wine country if you had time.

    We should be so lucky to go to any of them at this point. Here’s praying we see the Pack team we have been waiting for all year. Duke didn’t screw around with VT and we have let teams screw around with us all year.

    Good luck Pack. I’ll be there again as usual…don’t make me ride 2 hours back listening to Terry Harvey rail. He is much more fun (as are the callers) when we win.

    Swofford and the ACC PTB need to take some heat for this. Having the Champs Bowl as your 3rd best bowl is a friggin’ joke.

    Congrats Johnny boy – your stupid decision has cost the ACC the Gator Bowl. While Jax isn’t paradise, it was a nationally recognized bowl game w/ a good tradition, usually a decent opponent, and not a bad place to go.

    And folks, this isn’t BC’s fault. You can’t blame them for asking..the ACC chose to carry this water for them AFTER they were admitted to the ACC.

    The Gator bowl is a serious loss, but I get a sense the ACC was just dropped and didn’t really have a say. They try to paint it like they went down swinging for their member institutions, but that’s too stupid for me to believe. Wasn’t this the matchup up for the ACC vs Big East/ND? In trade we get a matchup with the Pac-!0 in the Sun Bowl, that’s not so bad ehh?

    BTW, West Virginia was the team to add en lieu of BC. We’d have had a nice coverage of our region, added two existing long term rivalries WVA-Md and WVa-VT, and added a solid traveling fanbase to balance out the TV star of the fairweather U fans.

    May have missed out on the Boston market, but you would have a sensible, manageable footprint. Hindsight a little, and who knows if WVa would have been a willing partner, but it makes sense to me now.

    I know that the topic of this post is not baseball or Russell Wilson, but he who asketh shall receive: Russell Wilson was selected in the 41st round out of high school, so it doesn’t seem that he’s significantly improved his draft position.
