South Carolina Post-Game – The Perfect Blueprint

You have to hand it to the ol’ ball coach. He managed to do what nobody could in 2008 – stopped Russell Wilson cold. When asked by the media afterwards how he managed to bottle up Wilson like that, Spurrier exclaimed “We’ve got athletes!” That they do. But what almost nobody is able to to pull off is to have their athletes play with near perfect discipline and consistently execute the gameplan. That’s one hell of a coaching job.

South Carolina was bigger than NC State. South Carolina was faster than NC State. South Carolina was better coached than NC State. South Carolina had three trips to the red zone. NC State had ZERO. It was amazing that this game was even close.

Fortunately, we have no games remaining against SEC opponents. I doubt many other teams will bring the same athleticism and defensive speed to the table in 2009. So, all is not lost. As I’ve said all offseason, THIS is NOT “the year.” But 7-5 or 8-4 is possible, and it starts with beating Pitt on September 26. Do that, and we are still on track. Fail and it’s back to needing another Herculean effort to get back to respectability.

We’ll see what happens.

With the play calling there are two things that really jump out at me. We ran the off tackle to the right two times in a row with washinton for i believe 17 yards. 1st and 10 what the hell are you doing running the off tackle to the left. That is when you call a play action pass down the seam.

The other play that got me was the last 4 plays of the game. As a coach/OC you should know if you do not get a first down that you are going for it on 4th. SC was playing pass all the way. Going for the end zone on first down was a good call for me but on second down a draw play would have been perfect. They rushed 2 maybe 3 I can’t really remember. Yes Bryan was wide open and had the ball go through his hands but that does not mean that was the right call. The draw play would have opened up the play book more for 3rd and 4th down if needed. Instead we are stuck in two passing plays where you need 10 yards which puts the offense in a bad position.

Those two missed play calls is something I see as a problem with the OC.

did you guys not see the plays where Wilson made the SEC-Speed Carolina defense look silly, even Norwood whiffed on quite a few clear shots at RW. You guys are just over-analyzing the game. Wilson isn’t slower and the only reason we think that he’s thinking too much is because we know there’s been a coaching staff insistence that he look to 2nd and 3rd options. He’s SUPPOSED to look for 2nd and 3rd options. I imagine that RW will get better at it, just like he got better as the year went on, and by the end of the year, he’ll be better than he was at the end of last year.

I actually thought we were better conditioned than Carolina was in the 4th quarter. That timeout that SC called when we were driving was genius.

On the pass to Jarvis Willaims in the end zone on 4th down, TOB said the play was 4 streaks. this means there were no underneath routes BECAUSE SC had been playing the underneath routes all night. We got single coverage on our tallest receiver and RW underthrew it JUSSSST a tad, otherwise that’s 7. Great play calling if you ask me.

And RW is not going to be able to do a whole lot of anything when DT’s are coming thru the OL free and easy. Someone mentioned that it was the speed of SC’s DE’s and that Mattes was doing a bang-up job inside. Wrong. I saw Mattes turning left when he should have been turning right and DT’s all over RW. Mattes will get better for sure, but the OL at certain points in the game, really stalled drives.

I am reading this as TOB being completely out coached.
