Fear and Loathing* in Carter-Finley

This time tomorrow, it will be gameday. For the first time in several years, disaster doesn’t seem imminent. The players are confident. The fans are confident. Hell, the weather is even going to be perfect. Doesn’t that scare the crap out of anyone else?

At NC State, we are always the most confident before impending disaster. And at least this first week of play, that’s what I fear is looming. Fortunately, we have a coach and a staff with a proven track record, not just that desperate, amorphous “hope” for a better day that we usually have as Wolfpack fans. They can right the ship, beat Pitt, go .500 or better in ACC play, and finish with a solid 7-5 or 8-4 record heading into bowl season. Keep in mind how they got their first two Wolfpack squads back on track after Hindenburg-like starts.

Beyond superstition, paranoia, and my well-known Eeyore-ish tendency towards pessimism – I also see a Gamecocks team with baseline SEC talent. South Carolina doesn’t have Georgia or LSU’s speed and strength…but it doesn’t have Vandy or Mississippi State’s, either. The optimist can claim that SC’s defensive speed is now playing on Sunday – but I doubt the cupboard is that bare for replacements. I also steadfastly believe that expectations are a year ahead of schedule. The kind of players that form the backbone of championship-contending Tom O’Brien teams (RJ Mattes, Audie Cole) are sliding up the two deep. But it won’t fully come together until the 2010-12 window of opportunity.

Predicting a Wolfpack win means betting on a futile Gamecock passing game. Recent history makes that a decent bet – but even bad QBs can be expected to make big plays against a Wolfpack secondary missing its only game-ready CB, DeAndre Morgan (who is out with an injury). This means that the guys we’ve heard about all summer not progressing rapidly enough for the staff’s liking? They will start tomorrow night. At both corner slots. With a former walk-on WR starting at one safety position. I like Clem Johnson as much as anyone, but unless we’ve cloned him in the offseason, we’re going to give up some big plays.

That leaves one route to victory – Russell Wilson single-handedly carrying us to a shootout win (think last year’s BC game, only with State having the ball last). Yeah, that’s possible. But it’s a little much to expect on opening night, when South Carolina has had all offseason to build a gameplan around containing one guy, knowing that nobody else can beat them.

My prediction? South Carolina 34, NC State 24. I hope like hell to be proven very wrong, and for the SFN community to mock me mercilessly on Friday morning.

* The loathing part is fairly easy. Todd Ellis’ invisible six shooter is the best embodiment of why I hate the chickens. Even when we beat these guys, we lose. The untimed down Hail Mary from Kramer to Peebles thrilled us in 1986, as I pointed and laughed at the stunned, toothless Gamecock faithful that dominated the grass bank seating. But EK aggravated an ankle injury on that play, and missed the next game. State lost to a 2-7 UVA squad behind horrid QB play, costing us the ACC title. That one still hurts.

(1) Please don’t miss our recently launched SFN Community Forums. If you currently have a login and password to use with SFN, that same login and password will work with the forum as well. The forums are also available on most mobile phones.

(2) Please note that this entry was logged by BJD95. Let’s be sure to rub it in to him when the Pack delivers on Thursday night.

(3) If BJD’s fear is to be realized – and if USC can truly score 34 points on anyone – then you can rest assured that it will rest with the lack of depth and talent in the NC State secondary. That secondary took ANOTHER big hit when starting cornerback DeAndre Morgan’s ankle injury was publicly announced. That means that three of the four projected starters in the secondary for this year – Javon Walker, DeAndre Morgan and Dominique Ellis will not be suiting up for the first game of the year.

(4) WhatifSports.com runs computer simulations for sporting events. They run 10,000 simulations of all games and their models show NC State playing at home wins 81% of the time against South Carolina by an average score of 21-10. (Link to Week One games)

BJD: That’s insane. I have a hard time believing we could hold a high school team to 10 points with the lineup we’ll trot out tomorrow night.

(5) IMHO, if BJD’s worst fears are realized, then a confluence of events similar to last year’s game would have to unfold – RW getting injured in his first game; no back-up quarterback option; a converted defensive lineman starting at center executing three horrendous snaps costing us possessions and field position; a young set of inexperienced wide receivers; and more. I just don’t know if that all is possible.

It’s interesting to compare my views with BJD on the optimism to pessimism scale.

On the SC game…. VaW>BJD (more optimistic)
    On the 2009 season…. VaW=BJD
    On the 2010 season…. BJD>VaW

Garcia MAY light the Pack up tomorrow night (goodness knows that State’s D will be bad enough). But I am just not going to assume that a pretty mediocre QB comes out of the gate strong in the first game of the year.

  2. tvp1 09/02/2009 at 12:43 PM #

Yeah, the 2010 schedule is BRUTAL. At ECU, At UCF, Cincinnati at home, then At GT, At Clemson, At UNC, At Maryland, with VT, fSU, Wake, BC at home. Plus we’ll have rebuilt OL and DL and (perish the thought) Wilson may have taken his game to the minors.

  3. kevirose 09/02/2009 at 12:55 PM #

RE Garcia – i have a buddy who goes to school down there and claims to live in the same apt. complex as Garcia. He says he still sees Garcia driving around with a can of beer in his hand. I do that too sometimes, but I’m not a starting CF QB.

  4. BJD95 09/02/2009 at 1:27 PM #

I’m not overly concerned about the schedule, because if Wilson comes back, I think we’ll clearly be the best team in the Atlantic in 2010. That doesn’t mean the schedule won’t trip us up, but we’ll certainly be a contender for the ACC crown. And that’s what I predict for 2010-12 – a true contender.

The short version of my thesis is that SC is a middle-of-the-road SEC team with question marks at multiple positions, and that we are a middle-of-the-road ACC team with question marks at multiple positions.

Middle of SEC > Middle of ACC

I was just at Williams Brice Stadium a while ago for a work related visit and the cocks were doing final walkthrough before loading on the bus. They walked through about four fake fieldgoal scenarios with all four being a right side pass play… Ok enough spy work for now.

First, thanks for allowing me to post as a Gamecock fan and not being shouted out.

I have watched both of these teams too close and while on most weeks I could call the game, this one is just too freakin hard. As a SC homer, there are tons of areas I would pump as being good, but Wilson is such a wild card. Yes, no one could plan for him last year while we have now had all summer. NC State has Cash healthy again and if our O line fails to block, it could be a long day. Tebow also sliced and diced our D, and we have never handled the running game threat well.
I will disagree with an earlier post and say that you want a better secondary than front. As Gamecocks (and at times Shamecocks), I have watched bad secondaries torched over and over after making a few nice run stops. You can wear our the front seven and it gets ugly.
If we were playing Chuck Amato.. honestly, I would be more scared b/c his teams got up for games like this. TOB I think will do a good job and solid game plan.. but not sure what comes out.
My prediction.. State is caught up in over reading the wins last year. Meaning, the teams you beat were good, but not as good as you remember. (UNC was impressive though) USC was in the same boat a few years ago winning 4 in a row and we though we would be awesome.. didn’t play out. My heart says 31-17 USC, my head says 35-24 State.. for what its worth.

    Either way.. BET THE OVER!

“Middle of SEC > Middle of ACC”

    2008: Wake Forest 30 – Ole Miss 28
    2008: GT 45 – UGA 42
    2008: LSU 432 – GT 3
    2008: Clemson 31 – USC 14
    2008: USC 34 – State 0

Top and mid of ACC is way worse than the top of the SEC (which is why I left off games against UF and Bama) but the middle last year was equal.

  8. Wulfpack 09/02/2009 at 4:25 PM #

The winner will be the team that takes care of the ball and limits its penalties. Remember it’s the first game and emotions will be flying high. At some point executing has to trump adrenaline. I’m actually a little concerned with all the pomp and circumstance. Just play ball like TOB would have em and we will win. Try to be an all star and USC will make us pay. State by a score.

  9. BJD95 09/02/2009 at 4:38 PM #

You also had Vandy beat BC in their bowl matchup last year. If you expand the time frame to the last 5 or so seasons, the sample size will be larger and clearer.

  10. CaptainCraptacular 09/02/2009 at 4:45 PM #

No argument there. From 2004-2007, middle SEC > middle of ACC.
In 2008 even with BC/Vandy middle of ACC = middle of SEC.

  11. highstick 09/02/2009 at 5:05 PM #

Roandaddy, do you mean there are two of us that think it will be a close game?

For what it’s worth, I see at lot of both team’s fans quoting stuff that probably isn’t true, i.e. it comes from Tudor or comes from Ron Morris. If anyone doesn’t think that these two don’t share their notes with each other, I’ve got some swampland for sale. With that being said, I wouldn’t trust either one to write an analysis that wasn’t biased against either team.

Until both teams “show me” on the field, I’m reserving a lot of optimism on either side.

Cowdog, were you around when SC kept calling timeout at the end of the game when it was over and Buckey kept throwing TD’s?

Funny, the other day another Gamecock fan was still fussing about Danny Peebles catch! They still aren’t over that one!!

    BEAT CLEMPSON!!

PS – Best wishes for a smooth surgery and a speedy recovery for your Dad Chop. My Dad went through the same thing on Super Bowl Sunday in early ’95.

Still recall the Gamecock trip to Raleigh back in the fall of 88.

One load came through central campus with a charter bus filled with Gamecock fans and they were throwing (empty) liquor bottles out and hitting student cars all the way from Reynolds to the front of Burgaw.

Well, I’m from Montgomery County and you know when you see someone doing that you throw a rock at them.

Problem is where do you find a rock in an area of bricks and asphalt?

Good news is that a number of bottles came flying out at them near Owen Dorm hitting the side of the bus.

Their fans were loud mouth asses at the game and I do not recall seeing so many pre-game fights at any place in my life.

I’ve hated them since and I do so til this day.

Their coach is a fine Presbyterian so I can forgive them a bit.

“USC assistant head coach for defense Ellis Johnson said this morning backup defensive tackle Kenny Davis has been suspended for tomorrow night’s game at NC State for a violation of team rules. Davis becomes the third Gamecock defensive lineman suspended for the game joining Ladi Ajiboye and Clifton Geathers. His absence adds to the depth problem at defensive tackle where the Gamecocks will have only starters Nate Pepper and Travian Robertson and reserve Melvin Ingram ready to play.”

McCallum, my 102 lb wife(well then anyway) wanted to take on a couple of their female fans in Carter back in the early 70’s. When my son opted to go to South Carolina, it took us 2-3 years to get over our anti-Gamecock sentiment. Holtz helped that transition somewhat. Now I’ve gotten to the point where I can pull for both teams particularly when the play Clempson and UNC. This game gives me a lot of trauma though. I just don’t want anyone to get hurt and both teams get on with their respective conference battles.

You couldn’t find a loose brick? Dang, I’d have nailed the bus with something even if it was my shoe! If it makes you feel better, I was in Chapel Hill a couple of weeks ago with both Gamecock and N C State stickers on my car and got my car keyed down the side!

Here is what I know to be true:

That if the most delusional fanbase in college football history should win their first game tomorrow night….Then they will proceed to go undefeated and on to the national championship. They will have beaten Georgia 63-7 at Sanford stadium and Florida 49-3 at the cockroach. They MIGHT even beat Climpscum this year!!

  16. highstick 09/02/2009 at 7:45 PM #
  17. highstick 09/02/2009 at 7:47 PM #

That’s the most delusional fanbase in college football history w/o a tainted national championship. Clempson claims the fame for the latter! Sometimes I think it’s the water down here!

  18. b 09/03/2009 at 12:31 AM #

In my premonitions….Toney Baker runs roughshod all night with Eugene changing the pace, along with doses of screens and 3 steps early on, evolving into a handful of long pass plays in the 2nd half to put the game away late, 31-20. Garcia will be improved, but will likely make a few mistakes under what should be relentless pressure. If the green secondary can take advantage it could be a fun night for us. I have the same feeling I had againts UNC last year, so optimistic I’m almost certain I will be crushed Friday. Hope it turns out just like that one did.

The Pack is certainly at that in between phase in building the program, but surely karma will, if just once, overcorrect in our favor and the team will be a year ahead.

    It’s GAME DAY!!!

Hello Gameday….time to prove BJD wrong!

  21. wolfonthehill 09/03/2009 at 7:57 AM #

    Game-day, baby.

And I can’t tell if I’m more excited or filled with dread. The 8-hour tailgate will be perfect – including apparently ideal weather.

But if we lose tonight, which is entirely possible, it’s going to be pretty disheartening. At some point, we need to turn the corner… it seemed like we did so late last season, but a loss tonight makes that look like a fluke.

Come on, boys. Step it up. Let’s get this done tonight.

FWIW – TOB sounded awfully confident last night at the pep rally, from what I saw on the news. Let’s hope there’s a reason for the confidence.

  22. 85Designo 09/03/2009 at 8:21 AM #

This morning the Weather Channel referred to tonight’s game at “NC State” as the “Game Cocks” taking on the “Tar Heels”. We are the Rodney Dangerfield of college football. Absolutely no respect, no respect at all. Thanks Fowler, Good Job. Maybe Murray State and Gardner Webb will put us on the map.

  23. GAWolf 09/03/2009 at 8:34 AM #

85Designo: I see that as GREAT bulletin board and pep talk material. There’s no better way to gain respect than to go on the field and win. The players, ultimately, are the ones who can make everyone in the country remember that we’re NOT the Tarheels. Ultimately you’ll always have some dingbats who mess everything up in the media, but the easiest way to limit this sort of thing is to win and win a lot.

I am very happy with the local media coverage of the lead up to the game. I loved the only story about UNCX in the paper today was about BBall..classic
