Coaches on the hotseat has deep ACC flavor

Link to Message Boards

After two weeks of college football, it appears that one of the more popular topics to discuss is ‘Coaches on the Hotseat’.

Fox Sports has a Top 10 List that includes Maryland’s Ralph Friedgen at #3 and Virginia’s Al Groh at #1. These two schools currently bring up the rear in ACC Sports Journal’s current power rankings. Fox’s list can be seen by clicking here.

Take a look at the bottom section of this entry that we ran in June proclaiming that Groh needed to win ‘8 or 9 games’ this season. That was pretty flabbergasting at the time; and now it obviously looks next to impossible to achieve.

Fox is claiming that Virginia and Maryland will have a race towards Jeff Jagodzinski.

Groh is straddling a six-game losing streak with his latest two losses against TCU and William & Mary. With Southern Miss (Sept.19) looming as the next Cavalier-slayer, rest assured his streak will continue despite Virginia’s glorious quest for ACC relevancy. The Cavaliers might beat Duke and Indiana, but don’t count on it. Things are so bad that, last year, Groh fired his own son as offensive coordinator. It’s going to be a race between Virginia and Maryland on who will throw more Benjamins at Jeff Jagodzinski.

Are you kidding me?

“Jags” may be a decent fit at Maryland’ and, the Terps have shown no problem with having real assholes hold their head jobs (see Friedgen & Gary Williams). But, I propose to you that Mike London will be the leading candidate for possibly both of these jobs – particularly Virginia. Additionally, a wild-card to consider would be Tommy Tuberville (again, more at Virginia)

The primary “coach on the hotseat” that could have a potentially big impact on NC State is obviously Charlie Weis at Notre Dame. It was no secret that some Notre Dame representatives extended overtures to Tom O’Brien during the last offseason; but, I won’t be concerned about this potential scenario until a time comes when I have to be. After Urban Meyer, I think the Fighting Irish would land Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly with little to no disruption in Raleigh.

Of course, Carolina fans aren’t resting ridiculously easy this year either as the few astute fans they have will be watching the performance of Wade Phillips and the Dallas Cowboys with particular interest.

While we are talking Virginia football, we kind of are obligated to share the following video that has become quite a favorite on the internet this week.

Would LOVE for Bill Cowher to be on the Panthers sideline. But they will have to have a new QB. Still hard to believe the Richardson brothers thought Jake was worth all those millions.

Without one Mike Paulus, Butch would would have won 9 last year. Sure wish they would have lost that game on Saturday to UCONN. They should have. It would be beaut if they loose to EZU this Saturday. Whether they get 8 or 9 wins this year is going to come down to how they play Miami and GT. Tomorrow night’s GT/Miami game should be a good game and nice indicator of exactly where they stand.

I feel sure that Groh is gone. Really I think the money issues will be taken care of. I’d be real surprised if that is not already worked out. As much as anything I think Groh got an extra year because of the basketball change. It didn’t hurt that he had a little streak going in the middle of last year either. They seem to be willing to make a change without too much hand-wringing, and UVa has money to use when they need it from all I’m told.
They are my “adopted” 2nd team due to family circumstances. But there is one good thing about sucking as bad as they do. No fan stress: We set up the tailgate there last Sat. at 12:30 with a 3:30 game. Great tailgate spot at a beautiful place on a gorgeous day with food and beverages out the butt. Around about 4:00 someone in our large group said, “well should we think about going in?” The overwhelming response was “why the hell would we do that?” So we didn’t and continued until 6:30 when we packed up and went home. Had a lot of fun especially since State wasn’t on TV. Wish I could get the tailgate spot without buying the tickets!

Jerry Jones – from Arkansas with strong ties to Arkansas football.

Gee…anyone familiar with Butch Davis’ background?

seawolf – carroll was just barely over .500 in the NFL. That’s not exactly chopped liver.

Butch Davis would be at least third and probably lower on Dallas’ wishlist.

It really wouldn’t matter thought because if Shanahan turned it down Jason Garrett would be offered the job and take it.

Skip Holtz and Schiano at Rutgers are other names to keep in mind with these potential openings.

Hmm.. I’m in the minority, but I don’t see Tubberville as a good fit at UVA. On the other hand, I saw him as the perfect fit at Clemson. I don’t think he’s polished enough to really fit with UVA’s fans. He’d have been that second coming of Danny Ford for Clemson. Clemson’s hire still boggles my mind.

Ditto with Jags. He’s a NFL guy who doesn’t like to recruit, openly feuded with an AD, got fired (and then got fired again). Schools typically go with the exact opposite of their last coaching hire. My guess is that since UVA went with a pro guy (who I personally don’t think has been a good recruiter) last time, they’ll go with a college guy.

I can see TCU’s coach ending up at UVA. If a guy can get Texas Christian to 10 wins year in and year out (and win big games like Oklahoma), then he’d be be at the top of my list. If I were the UVA AD, I’d have been rolling out the red carpet for him this past weekend. The question is whether he’d fit in with their fanbase….

As for Maryland, they went the coordinator/alum route last time, so I don’t seem them doing either this time. Their fan base seems to resonate well with a coach from the Northeast. They might be dumb enough to hire Jags, but I kind of doubt it. I think they might make a run for Gil (or for UCONN’s coach). I doubt Gil ends up at Nebraska any time soon, but he is going to end up at some larger school.

It’s much more likely that the pigs will come calling for Butchie after Bobby Petrino bombs at Arkansas. If Houston Nutt continues to finish ahead of Petrino in the SEC West he will be gone after three seasons.

In regards to the new poll on the homepage:
If I had it my way, State would roll into Kenan and kick both their asses. But if I have to pick one, I’ll definitely be pulling for ezu for ridiculously obvious reasons.

Why all the shots at UVA sports?

    Sinc 1981:
    -2 Final Fours(1 with Sampson, 1 w/out)
    -3 Elite 8s((1 with Sampson, 2 w/out)
    -2 Sweet 16s

    NC State since 1981:
    -1 Final Four(National Title)
    -2 Elite 8s
    -2 Sweet 16s

Now let’s compare football(from 1982/George Welsh era going forward):
    #33 UVA – 190-130-3
    #51 NC State – 168-149-3

    -2 ACC titles for UVA
-0 ACC titles for NC State

    -1 Major Bowl for UVA
    -0 for NC State

Head to head – 15-9 UVA

Hell, they have even been better than us during the “awful” Al Groh era:

    #47 UVA 62-50
    #53 NC State 60-51

If you want to go beyond the two major sports, then UVA is one of the best overall athletic programs in the entire country (8th in the Sears Cup this past year). They win tons of national titles, ACC titles and really are very good in every sport they play except for recent struggles in basketball and now football.

After going 1-5 to start 2007, and 2-6 to start 2008, TOB has a lot to show me before I’ll worry about him going anywhere. The SC game was awful, they finally did what they were supposed to do against Murray St. thank goodness. The Pitt game will be the real bellwether for me.

My wish on ECU and UNC….a pile of sheep dung falls from the heavens on both teams who drown in it!

  13. McCallum 09/16/2009 at 8:49 PM #

Tuberville at Miami in 1 to 2 years.

Shannon is going to tank it this year and then he’ll be out.

    His job to reject.

I will get the Dallas Cowboys job before Butch Davis does. The next coach there is going to be Jason Garrett. It sure as hell isn’t going to be Shanahan.

Butch Davis has already been offered the Arkansas job and he turned them down. He is, I’m afraid, going to retire from Chapel Hill.

Notre Dame is probably going to go 10-2 this year. Hell, it wouldn’t shock me if they beat USC. They WONT go worse than 9-3. I think that would be enough to bring Weis back.

If I was UVa and Brian Kelly and his steamer trunk full of issues (There are a LOT) didn’t bother you, I’d go ahead and start talking to his agent. Do what UNC did with Davis and tell Groh that he’s out and you’ll buy out his contract and get the head start on Kelly.

That said, Brian Kelly is a *terrible* fit at UVa.

Schiano turned down the Michigan job, so he apparently already has his eye on something. I don’t think he’s going to get the Penn State gig (it’s obscene that Paterno is allowed to stay considering how little he has to do with anything).

  15. rtpack24 09/16/2009 at 10:39 PM #

I thought this was the year that UNC had to go to Greenville. I do not believe they have ever played there. After wathcing Apps defense at home last weekend, I wonder if ECU has enough offense to compete Sat. Let’s hope their 6th year senoir has a big day.

  16. Classof89 09/17/2009 at 9:17 AM #

Taylor Zarzour mentioned the guy at Richmond as the candidate at the top of UVa’s list. He also thought Tuberville just wouldn’t be a good fit at Virginia (I don’t think he’d be a good fit anywhere in the ACC north or south of Clemson…)

  17. bradleyb123 09/17/2009 at 10:15 AM #

rtpack24, Carolina went to Greenville two years ago and lost. Which was good. The only bad part was how happy it made the ECU fans.

JMU’s Mickey Matthews and Richmond’s head coach (forgot his name) are going to me in the mix for the UVA job too.

  19. Alpha Wolf 09/17/2009 at 2:13 PM #

^ Sounds like no splashy hire in the works for UVA.

But I hear Butch Davis and Jim Grobe will be rumored candidates. They are for every other job, why not this one?

With all the talk on here about the Panthers, here’s one more opinion:

I find it impossible to pull for a football team wearing blue called “Carolina”, whose games are broadcast by (Woody Durham Jr) Mick Mixon, and who are located in a town I can’t stand- Charlotte.

It wasn’t that many years ago here that you could turn on the tv every Sunday afternoon and watch the Washington Redskins, a team that many people in this area still prefer over Charlotte. When the Panthers came to Charlotte, the Redskins games disappeared from tv and instead of watching teams like the Cowboys, Eagles and Giants, we were introduced to the NFL South, which with the Panthers, Falcons, Saints and Bucs, has been a terrible league over the long haul. And before anyone mentions the Bucs’ Super Bowl, please look at their record prior to that, not to mention the Saints and Falcons. We were watching these teams vs Carolina while the rest of the country saw Washington vs Dallas.

Here’s hoping the damned, no, make that the GD Panthers, lose every game they ever play until they leave Charlotte and once again the Redskins are restored as our primary NFL team every Sunday.

And for those Wolfpack fans who’ve toes I’ve stepped on here, how in the world can you root for a team led by Julius Peppers that has a dyed-in-the-wool Tar Heel broadcasting their games?

  21. Noah 09/17/2009 at 11:18 PM #

Sweet Jesus, I’d rather eat glass and wipe my ass with razor wire than have to go back to watching the Foreskins every weekend.

In the history of professional sports, I’m not sure if there has ever been a more wretched collection of fungus-laden toenail clippings than that sorry franchise.

  22. Wulfpack 09/18/2009 at 6:50 AM #

61Packer, you might want to think twice about boasting about the Redskins. The Panthers have far outperformed the Skins in recent years. That is one miserable franchise that has entered an area of non-relevance — they are the Cowboys, Eagles and Giants whipping boy. You are certainly entitled to your opinion about the Panthers. I happen to have a very strong connection to the team. But your comment about the NFC South is simply unsupported by the facts. Fact: An NFC South team has played in five of the last seven NFC Championship games.

  23. JasonP 09/18/2009 at 8:43 AM #

    61Packer,
Will you stick with the Skins if they start drafting and signing a bunch of UNC and ECU players?

Before the Panthers, all we’d get was Skins and Dolphins games around here. Take a look at the Panthers’ schedule. They play the whole NFC East division. Granted, they’re going to lose those games this year, but it’s a better situation than watching Snyder’s inept group every week as they have successfully sustained their suckitude for years. He’s going to fire Zorn at the end (or middle) of the season. The next coach will be what, their 10th coach since 2000?

  24. BJD95 09/18/2009 at 1:45 PM #

Frankly, I’d be happy just getting the national games every week (even though I have been a “secondary” Panthers fan).

The Cowboys, Giants, and Eagles are still on all the damned time. But I do feel fortunate that we won’t be treated to the Deadskins and Rams this Sunday.

  25. McCallum 09/18/2009 at 2:47 PM #

Might need to rethink the Miami issue.

    The offense looks vastly improved.
