3rd Game: State to play without a different set of six starters

Starters listed in italcized bold.

OUT FOR SEASON
Mario Carter, TE – knee
Denzelle Good, OL – shoulder
Nate Irving, LB – leg
Colby Jackson, FB – knee
Everett Proctor, QB – shoulder

OUT
Jamelle Eugene, HB – knee
Clem Johnson, S – thigh
Jeff Rieskamp, DE – hip
Jay Smith, WR – flu
Jake Vermiglio, OT – lower leg
Javon Walker, DB – knee
Julian Williams, OG/OT – flu

When I view the injury list posted by Pack Pride this week my initial response is not one of frustration with the growing number of players to miss time…my initial reaction is – where is Donald Bowens?

I also note that DeAndre Morgan is not listed on the report. So, effectively Morgan & Bowens have been replaced by Julian Williams, Clem Johnson & Jay Smith.

At least we know that two of the new guys on the list, Williams and Smith, shouldn’t be out long. How much time does it take to treat swine flu? When could they practice again? If J. Williams can’t play against Pitt, we’re gonna need Vermiglio back in a big way.

Supposedly Clem Johnson’s injury is minor as well.

Pretty much my thoughts. Better hope the flu didn’t spread before getting Smith and Williams off the field. I would assume Johnson’s not hurt too bad. I’ve read a lot about TOB shuffling our secondary lately. Maybe it’s to see if he likes it better this week when it doesn’t really count. You guys heard anything about it?

  3. JasonP 09/18/2009 at 10:34 AM #

Let’s hope they can confine this flu before it spreads to the whole team. Swine flu starts out much like a head cold and for most ends there. If it gets into your lungs, you’ll be spending time in the hospital.

All I can say is thank god we had these two easy games to heal up the starters.

If that flu spreads for the Pitt game watch out!

I predict Clem, Jay, Julian, Jake will be back before Pitt.

CDC recommends you stay home for 24 hours after the fever subsides. I’m trying to find more info on Bowens and Morgan. Are they back? I thought Bowens would be out for a while? When do they release the 2 deep for the GW game?

  6. McPete 09/18/2009 at 11:02 AM #

    Packtothefuture,
the two deep is released earlier in the week than the injury report (i know it sounds silly), so we won’t know til the game if Morgan or Bowens will play. But if they are off the injury report, they can play. It’s just a matter of whether or not the coaching staff lets ’em and for how long.

From what i hear, swine flu is all around campus right now. Since everyone on the team has to go to class, ride the wolfline, etc., others can still get it.

Looks like we will be losing to Pitt due to swine flu

  8. bradleyb123 09/18/2009 at 11:25 AM #

Yeah, but we could also BEAT Pitt due to swine flu hitting them. They’re not immune, and theoretically, the law of averages will have some Pitt players coming down with it, as well. (Not wishing it on them, though…)

But then again, since when has the law of averages ever been fair to the Wolfpack? If we ever start playing catchup in the injury category, we might go a few years without an injury. The law of averages OWES us a few favors!

I’m not sure if there were vaccinations given earlier for special cases, but from what I’ve read, the H1N1 vaccine won’t be available to the public until early October. Hopefully those guys were quarantined early.

  10. bradleyb123 09/18/2009 at 11:34 AM #

I think I read somewhere that Bowens and Morgan have been cleared to play.

  11. packpowerfan 09/18/2009 at 12:13 PM #

bradley the law of NCSU averages states that ALL bad things will happen to us at one moment in time, especially if that moment is a big game, or on a big stage. My thoughts are that the entire team will have swine flu for the Pitt game, whereas Pitt will have so much Vitamin C in their systems that they will be UNSTOPPABLE.

For real I think we have a good chance, but only if the flu subsides.

I just want to know (as of 12:28 pm EST) who in the world are the 42 people who misread the poll and voted for UNC?

  13. packalum44 09/18/2009 at 1:25 PM #

Same old song, different day. Knock on wood, our injuries seem to be of the “normal” variety this season and not season ending (knock knock knock).

charger17. That would be two misguided people–the guy who posts on you tube from his mother’s basement at #1 (25 pts) and Caulton Tudor who put them at #9 (17 pts).

Does anyone know if there will be a live feed to the game this weekend???

  16. bradleyb123 09/18/2009 at 5:47 PM #

This is off-topic, but since some of you brought up UNX, I have a thought I wanted to see if anyone else shares: I’m getting a bad feeling Carolina could reach 7-0 before losing to Virginia Tech.

Think about it. Their next games are ECU, GT, UVa, Georgia Southern and FSU. Those are ALL winnable games. I believe GT stinks. I even thought that after their crazy win over Clemson. They scored on big, crazy plays. I wasn’t surprised at all when Miami killed them. If Florida State isn’t any good, and Carolina beats ECU, I think there’s a VERY GOOD chance Carolina gets to 7-0.

The worst part about it is, I don’t think they’re that good. But they might be 7-0 and climbing in the polls. And by then, their receivers may have figured out how to play.

I was really hoping UConn would hold on and beat them. They didn’t deserve to win that game. UConn totally rolled over for them at the end.

    [End of rant]

I’m one of those people who would rather see UNC win. I say this for multiple reasons:
    1) I always pull for the ACC non-conference, including UNC. If we want respect as a conference, then we need to win our non-conference games. That’s true at every level of the league. My ideal record for UNC is 4-8 — 4 wins non-conference and 8 losses in conference.

    2) We don’t play ECU this year but play UNC. A UNC win helps our strength of schedule. An ECU win hurts it.

    3) I’d rather beat (or lose to) a UNC team that has beaten ECU. Imagine ECU beating UNC and then UNC beating State. Ugh. That’d be almost as bad as losing to UNC and ECU in the same year (which gets a football coach fired at NC State).

  18. 61Packer 09/18/2009 at 8:27 PM #

My ideal record for UNC this year is 11-1; their only loss would be 41-10 on November 28.

  19. packpowerfan 09/18/2009 at 10:10 PM #

61Packer…that means they win the ACC?

  20. Noah 09/19/2009 at 9:51 AM #

Football players are going to be at the bottom of the list for vaccinations. Ain’t no way in the world they’ll be able to get a shot.

Actually, an 11-1 record only means they would MAKE IT INTO the ACC championship game. 😉

I can’t pull for Carolina, ryebread. I see your point and all, but if Carolina wins today, they have a very realistic shot at starting 7-0, while finding some way to improve their passing game and overall offense, not to mention confidence.

I don’t want Carolina feeling like some kind of powerhouse when they roll into Carter-Finley on November 28th. I want them feeling like a doormat that KNOWS it is about to lose #3 in a row to the Wolfpack.

On Thursday, TheWolfpacker.com listed Morgan and Bowens as cleared to play.

“In the good news department, redshirt junior cornerback DeAndre Morgan and redshirt junior wide receiver Donald Bowens have both been cleared to play. Bowens hasn’t played since the 2007 season after missing last year with a back injury, followed by knee surgery in January 2009.”

Swine flu’s kicking everyones ass. I work at a school and we have one confirmed case already so it’s just a matter of time before it hits me; although I don’t play so it doesn’t matter so much I guess.

Anyone know of a good place to watch the game online?
