Media Bytes for Friday

Thirteen days until football season kicks off, and things are getting very real over at practice for the Pack’s players.  Here are some interesting links for you to peruse in the meantime, and if you’ve seen anything Pack-related that you would like to share with the community, please feel free to put it in the comments;

The official 2009 Media Guide for football

This is a rather large PDF file, and I would strongly advise you to save it to your local computer and then read it locally.  If you prefer, you can buy a printed copy for $20 at Meet the Pack Day.

Speaking of, Meet the Pack Day is August 29th. It will be your best chance to get autographs from your favorite players and to offer your best wishes for the season.  This is always a fun event, and is free.

Personally, I prefer to get photographs I have taken autographed by my favorite players, and then I frame them and hang them on my office wall.  I’ve got Philip Rivers, Mario Williams and Andre Brown up there currently, and will hopefully add Russel Wilson this year.  Anyway, a superb source of autograph-able photo prints is available from Gene Galin, whose work you have undoubtedly seen through the years.  Persue his galleries, select a print and purchase it for an extremely reasonable price.  Meanwhile, if you want to relive the 2008 season, you can do so at Gene’s ACC Football Photos website.

Next, Dave Glenn of 850 The Buzz interviewed Tom O’Brien yesterday, and if you missed it, you can listen to it here.  Me, I like hearing from our coach and always enjoy the way he handles himself.  It’s a great thing to have a coach we can believe in on our sidelines, isn’t it?

Steve Spurrier told the Savannah Morning News yesterday that the “Gamecocks are the rise.”  We’ll see about that in thirteen days when we all convene at Carter-Finley Stadium.  I don’t know what you have planned to cook at your tailgate, but this is on our menu: Beer Can Chicken, also known as Beer Butt Chicken.  Don’t know about you, but the words “butt” and “chicken” make me think of the Ole Ball Coach, and I for one will be extremely happy if we sit in the parking lot post-game enjoying some crispy leftovers and savoring the first Pack win of the year.

Enjoy your weekend, fellows.  I’ll be working on the honey-do list so I can watch football in peace this fall.

Out in California we called ’em dancin’ chicken, Alpha. Used cola as often as beer for imparting flavor.

The Western NY in me still lends itself in the form of Italian sausage and fresh Polish. Peppers and onion of course.

And I too will enjoy the postgame every bit as much as the pregame.
In truth, I still get pregame jitters.

I have a feeling my extended tailgating days will be limited to a handful of games for the next 15 years.

I swear, it seems I’ve been searching for the perfect tailgate for the last 10 years…You know, the one where you’re not rushed – you get there in plenty of time to prepare and eat all the food you want, drink all the beer you want, visit w/ all the friends you want to – then catch kick off. Even when I have the time allocated properly to not have to rush, something ends up happening to require some kind of anxious moment which prevents me from maximizing my pre-grame experience.

Last year, @ the USC game, it was the cab that didn’t show up until 1:30 before kickoff – even though we called it at 4pm…then we sat there waiting in traffic, ended up walking a mile, hopping a train which would have set us back another 15 minutes to get to the other side of the road.

When me ship comes, I’d love to get an RV, show up Friday evening or early Saturday morning.

Of course, last year was a great life lesson – I learned to appreciate a round of golf, 1 hour of tailgating before the game – never hurts to have a reminder of what’s really important. I’ll be thrilled if in a few years my 20 month old wants to chuck around the pigskin for an hour before gametime or if his own sporting events limit me to a handful of games.

Night games will be your keys for the next few yrs; Chop.

I should have written a guide for peeps with little ballplayers. Not too late I guess. It can be done, though it took some time for the wife and I to figure it out.

And I was forced to tailgate Saturdays at the Coloseum for her college team!

I don’t have a good feeling about this game at all. The Evil Genius will bring it.

I can’t believe how hard of a ticket this game has become.

yeah I got a feeling something will happen. That said I have a feeling this team will overcome that.

Yea – cowdog – providing the wife/grandparents/aunts/sitters cooperate!

As for as guides for peeps w/ little ballplayers – open to advice. I have my own ideas on how I’ll develop the boy if he’s interested. He could be like my Dad – who was a guy who could pick up any sport and instantly be good at it – or maybe he’s like his Dad – someone who takes to instructions very well.

Gamecock blogger here. I posted a rejoinder to your insult of Spurrier. Here is the link: http://photontorpedotube.blogspot.com/2009/08/nc-state-blogs-begin-insulting-spurrier.html

check out this story in the washington post today: an incident involving a couple of NC State bloggers (I’ve never heard of the site that is referenced in the article) accost a top-20 recruit at some tournament on the West Coast. The incident is used as an illustration on an article on the minefield of recruiting rules that “new media” types can inadvertantly wander into:
