Arnold Palmer video @ Lonnie Poole Golf Course (updated)

If you missed the previous videos chatting with Chancellor Woodward then you should click here to catch up.

He continues to be impressive in the short time that he appears in the video below.

UPDATE:

For more about the opening festivities at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course, read this article at Me and Old Man Par

“Along with Palmer, NC State graduates Erik Larsen and Brandon Johnson, who are architects with Palmer’s firm, saw the course to its recent completion and opening. Palmer said today that most of the heavy lifting was done by his Wolfpack-alum employees, as they did much of the design work and were on site for th two years it took to construct the course. Palmer was a frequent visitor, giving his guidance and thoughts. When asked today how much help he gave Larsen and Johnson, Palmer said humbly that “I helped them a little.”

“Palmer said he is very pleased with the young course, and added that he had delivered what he promised: one of the finest on-course golf courses in the country. Indeed, early reviews of Lonnie Poole are effusive in their praise and many have made comparison to the Scarlet Course at Ohio State and the Yale Golf Course in New Haven, Connecticut. Palmer said that “the golf course is beautiful” and added later that “over time, it’s only going to get much, much better with maturity.”

“Much like Arnold Palmer himself has.”

I saw a clip on the local news the other night about Arnie’s appearance. I thought it was a HUGE gesture for him to wear a State shirt, not to mention to give the Wuffies to the crowd, considering he’s a WFU alum. I met him at a Wake/State football game in Winston many many years ago. He could not have been more cordial.

I just watched this video which is different than what I saw before. I’d just like to say that Chancellor Woodward is extremely, extremely impressive. As far as I’m concerned he’s night and day compared to what we’ve experienced the last few years. I know we don’t want to settle without a search, but if a search is conducted and Woodward is deemed the best guy to lead our university, then I’ll be fine with that.

Also, it’s a joy to see Nick Valvano and the V Foundation back on campus. Actually, it’s not just on campus but it’s taken its rightful seat in the limelight of our University’s current events. The disconnect between that marketing behemoth and the Valvano legacy and NC State University has pained me more than any other of my alma mater’s many snafus through the years. I know the likes of Noah and some others have reservations about our association with V, but the truth of the matter is that on a national level V and the V Foundation are damned near perfect in every way. We’re crazy to not nurture the obvious win-win relationship that should exist between the two entities. It’s just great to know that the V Foundation Golf Tournament will be on campus. I see no reason why we shouldn’t host the basketball tournament in the near future as well now that the ice has been broken.

^ Arnold Palmer is supposed to come back for the V, which will be very, very cool.

Arnold Palmer is great at giving the Hook ’em Horns sign

^ Awww, give the guy a break. Arthritis is a bitch.

^ Arnie even making the attempt means a lot. Then again, Wake and State fans usually get along pretty well. I doubt you would get Davis Love to do it, and I know Petterson or Clark would NEVER say Go Heels…

^^^ I saw that as well but at least he tried.

Like GAWolf, I am impressed with Woodward. He was a very good choice. Experienced, competent, well-spoken – in short, a leader.

I do hope we go forward with an aggressive, national search and that Woodward is not a candidate. I think a situation like this works best when the interim is free to do what needs to be done without trying to impress, curry favor, or worry about the politics of the situation down the road.

Has anyone else had the pleasure of playing it yet. It is a beast of a course which I guess is a testament to the designers. I also suck at golf so maybe its just me.

    Small question: what “video below”?

The more I see of Woodward the more impressed I am with his leadership style. I hope he is offered a full time job even if it for only a few years which will give the university time to find the right type of person to fill his shoes.

Looking forward to walking the course in a little over a week as a volunteer at the Jimmy V Golf Classic.

While I’m not great at golf, I’m no slouch* and have played my fair share of high end courses and the course is going to be a top notch, very difficult course. This course should be championship quality with time.

I played it the first week that it opened and the course was in good shape (still has some growing in to do, i.e. major rough was sparse, a few spots where the rough and fairway were about the same length, minor details, etc.) and let me tell you, that course is going to be incredibly difficult (especially from the ‘championship tees’ which weren’t even out ~7200yds).

I can’t say enough about the quality of the design of the course (typical Palmer course with traps and bunkers challenging your every shot, from tee shot landing areas to monsters around the greens) and whats more impressive is its location near the heart of Raleigh.

*Don’t sell yourself short, you’re a tremendous slouch.
