Lorenzo Brown – Another One Bites the Dust

I apologize for not being more timely – I’ve been on vacation and out of the loop. But yes, what you may have heard is indeed true – Lorenzo Brown is headed to prep school and will not suit up for the 2009-10 Wolfpack squad. No matter how down the ACC may be, this is almost certainly a fatal blow for NC State’s already remote chance to contend for first division status.

Long-time readers will note that SFN commenter Noah has been hinting about possible issues with Brown ever since he committed to the Pack. Although we (and you) may fervently hope Noah is wrong, perhaps it’s time to stop expecting him to be so.

The obvious question now is “what happens next?” We can break that down into two parts – what should happen, and what to expect from the Lowe camp and his enablers.

On the should side of the ledger, nothing changes in the bar set, just the math regarding the likelihood of clearing it. Again, the fundamental key is distinguishing between fault and responsibility. While it is not Lowe’s fault that Lorenzo Brown’s grades fell short of what Georgia requires, in Season #4 the state of the program is Lowe’s absolute and unequivocal responsibility. The product on the floor must be something that NC State can be proud of. No excuses. Giving Lowe “credit” for recruiting rankings while giving him a pass when said recruits fail to qualify is the height of idiocy. But if you focus on bottom-line responsibility, it doesn’t matter. You can produce by bringing in great talent (ala Guy Lewis), or you can overachieve with lesser talent (ala Seth Greenberg). Either way, you have to produce. Lowe is not likely to produce with the current roster, but that’s on him. He is the coach and the general manager.

So, back to prong two. What should you expect? Well, for Team Lowe and its dwindling band of true believers, this is actually perfect. It gives you the perfect opportunity to intensify the pre-emptive excuse making. WTNY!!!!! Since almost every pundit will now expect State to finish 11th or 12th, they can (and will) shift the focus to beat “expectations” – despite the fact that expectations are so low because of the personnel Lowe has brought in and Lowe’s demonstrated coaching “acumen.” A career-best 9th place finish after four years gets you a pink slip from 95% of major D-1 programs, but the dead-enders would demand a contract extension instead. And since it isn’t possible to perform below expectations (i.e., you can’t fall off the floor), they will deem anyone not satisfied with 2009-10 results as delusional. Expect Fowler (if he’s still here) to break out the “lunatic fringe” term again.

More importantly, the status quo folks get to double down on blackmail. Lorenzo Brown and Ryan Harrow are both from the same recruiting pipeline, and will thus have access to the same set of talking points (that Harrow has already been testing out over the summer). Expect this to get a lot less subtle, and a lot more public – certainly no later than January 2010 (fun idea – run a pool for the date of the next public article with a qualifying Brown or Harrow quote). With Lowe’s tacit or explicit approval, these young men will declare that they are committed to Sidney Lowe, not NC State. This is certainly true of a certain individual deeply intertwined with their recruitment. And since recruits have not taken the court in a college game (and thus only have untapped potential for greatness, and no weaknesses in the eyes of many), some people will take this as a legitimate consideration. This is true despite what happened the last time NC State faced such a situation, which led to five years of basketball limbo – and that was with the best player in school history since the legendary David Thompson, not two Top 50 kids.

Feel free to shoot the messenger in the comments – but that’s simply how I see things shaking out. Things are ugly in West Raleigh, and about to get much, much uglier. Brace yourselves for the coming storm.

^ “Am I the only one who thinks is tired of that pattern? Really? Am I the only one?”

Not AT ALL, Matthew. I believe many people here very much have an anti-Sid agenda. I like the information and opinions here, but that agenda comes through so often and it gets tiresome.

“Could we PLEASE see how the season plays out before we do another article about how much Lowe is going to suck this year.”

I can’t remember how many times I’ve made the same plea. All this extreme negativity toward Sidney isn’t helping a THING right now.

SFN: Get over yourself. That is ridiculous. There is no ‘anti-Sid’ agenda here. There is a pro-NC State agenda here. NC State’s basketball program has been near the bottom of the ACC for the last three years and now is projected to be in the exact same position for year four.

Using your labels, I believe it is obvious that you have a pro-loser/anti-winning agenda.

Just goes to show you that you can’t trust the “insiders” that post on the different State sites saying everything is fine. Those people always speak the company line and give only a small amount of truth.

  3. VaWolf82 07/12/2009 at 11:09 PM #

Any one want to place bets on when the “State will be fine” crowd switches to WTNY?

  4. ncsslim 07/12/2009 at 11:29 PM #

The “we will be fine” crew never answers to their petulent little lectures when year-after-year (-after-year-etc…) we are not remotely fine.

No we are not fine, have not been fine for 20 years, and do not appear that we will be fine in the next.

“My name is Slim, and I’m a bad fan.”

    “Hi, Slim….”

I’m on the Lowe must produce this year- or we bring out the Fowler bags, sponsored by Harris teeter. Put on when the lead grows to 20 points.

is this a done deal? ….wow

    oh well, it’s just basketball

I by no means give Lowe a pass… but, Billy Donovan never rescinded his offer to Brown.

“TOB just lost his best player probably for the year. I didn’t see people throwing him under the bus. So why with Lowe. He’s one of the reasons NCSU was great. If you don’t remember go watch the !983 championship game, he’s the reason they won that game, he controlled the game the whole time. State has been in trouble for the past 20 years so why blame Lowe.”

    Answers:
    1) TOB has been a successful college coach at a D1 school.
    2) Prep school is a common thing in football and with the larger numbers and frequent redshirting this is not a big deal.
    3) State hasn’t been in trouble for 20 years. We were actually an average D1 team for the 5 years before Lowe got here.
    4) Lowe did not meet two of the major requirements of the job: A degree and College Head Coaching experience.
    5) No one I know questions Lowe’s loyalty but a lot of people I know feel Lowe was hired for one reason and one reason only, TO SAVE FOWLUPS JOB for a few years (so he could look for another job) after a completely botched search as no one would dare question the “hero” for several years.

And further more, I don’t hate Lowe and wish him the best of luck and major success this season. However, a coach only has a 4-5 year shelf life and if they don’t have a break out season by then, they usually never do because they are labeled – by the press, by the shoe companies, by the competing coaches, by the AAU coaches, and by the recruits themselves. They have to make waves early in thier career or either they fall by the wayside. Lowe is rapidly closing in on the end of his shelf life.

I’m really surprised at the lack of understanding and basic MATH by NC State people.

For those of you who can’t seem to figure this out on your own — Football has 22 starters. Basketball has 5.

Football has been showing a lot of positive momentum in TOB’s 2 years.

Basketball has been showing a lot of signs of stagnation in Sid’s last 2 years.

Football returns Russell Wilson running the team and adds a really strong redshirt class of players at key positions.

Basketball returns Javi Gonzalez running the team and adds a couple of impact players but just lost the projected highest impact recruit.

  11. Bubba 07/13/2009 at 8:09 AM #

The worst result of this IMO, is another year of slow stagnant offense with lots of whistles from Sid, setting up dump downs to Smith and Painter.I just cant see much running with Javi Farnold Julius and CJ manning the guard positions.

FTR:I was one who was pretty confident that Brown would qualify.I new there was a chance that he wouldnt, but his name was listed in the graduation program so he was damn close. Even when he wasnt allowed to walk by the principal,I still thought he would get in. My heart sank 3 weeks ago when I found out he was still taking the ACT test. Thats when the “o shit” hit me.

  12. StateFans 07/13/2009 at 8:35 AM #

For the record — OF COURSE EVERYONE would be FIRED UP to have a successful season.

    And, maybe it will happen.

But, the odds of having a successful season just went down. I don’t understand what there is to argue about unless you somehow think we will be better without Lorenzo Brown than we would be with him.

  13. Wulfpack 07/13/2009 at 9:20 AM #

Who knows what will happen but I do know our chances of a solid season just took a major hit.

You can damn well bet on the fact that Wolfpack football will have a solid season because TOB knows how to build a program, not a skeleton.

Sidney Lowe loves NC State, there is no question. But can he lead a program? To me, that’s the issue.

  14. rtpack24 07/13/2009 at 9:25 AM #

This should be a suprise to no one. My question would be did our staff encourage Brown to take SAT again in hopes of higher score. You would think that Brown would have taken SAT on June 21st the last time it was available. Brown has been committed to us for along time. This goes to directly to managing a program. We sign Josh Davis to everyones surprise and now Mychal Parker is a great possibility but scholarships are limited. This again is part of mamaging a program. Hopefully our staff was prepared for this but looking at the roster it appears they were not. Let us hope we can over come and have a great year. However, I hope I do not have to hear about the following year when Brown and Harrow get here. Next year never happens.

  15. Packman02 07/13/2009 at 9:29 AM #

^ Just for argument’s sake, what was the consensus predicted finish for next year’s team anyway? Did folks really think that next year’s squad (even with Lo Brown) would have a REALISTIC shot at finishing top 3 in the ACC?

I, for one, did not – and, no, this isn’t resultant of a knee-jerk reaction to the LB news.

With Lo Brown, we still –

1). Would not have the height to compete with the bigs of UNC, GT, Clemson, FSU or Duke

2). Would not have the guard play to compete with ‘the top tier’ (UNC plus teams who will eventually emerge).

3). Are not expected to be THAT much better of a defensive team, due to the infusion of youth.

I say all this to say – I don’t think the LB loss is as traumatic as we think it might be. I still think we’ll finish in the middle tier of the league, as it will be way down this year – a good year, if you had to pick one, to lose your top recruit.

Harrow and Brown come join the pack in 2010 and improve the backcourt play – and there’s your happy ending.

  16. howlie 07/13/2009 at 9:37 AM #

    1) Sid did an interesting interview following the Dillsboro WPC meeting where he was confusingly downplaying this recruiting class. It sounded peculiar that he was suppressing fan excitement over this class–and of course–the lack of LoBrown explains it. He must have known, then, that Lo wouldn’t qualify.

    2) Last year showed us the knees of Thomas and DeGand weren’t healed… and insider comments we kept hearing that there were “2-3 more scholarships are available, should we need them” seemed to be confirmation that they would never heal. Though Thomas displayed no on-court pain or ‘gimpiness,’ we were told he was playing in pain with bone-to-bone destruction with every step.
Point being: I don’t know that these two can be counted on at all this year–other than providing an emergency breather for others. Thus, this year’s team is really:

    (1) Dennis Horner (3/4) SR
    (2) Javi Gonzalez (1) JR
    (3) Tracy Smith (4/5) JR
    (4) Julius Mays (1/2) SOPH
    (5) CJ Williams (2/3) SOPH

    with Frosh:
    (6) Scott Wood (3/4)
    (7) DeShawn Painter (4/5)
    (8) Richard Howell (4)
    (9) Josh Davis (2/3)
    (10) Jordan Vandenberg (5)

That’s a team not only thin, but young and woefully inexperienced–with little-displayed on-court leadership at any position.

Plus, there are lots of ‘tweeners’ on this roster.

  17. Thinkpack17 07/13/2009 at 9:38 AM #

Rtpack24 just gave me a bit of hope. At least we may have room to offer Parker now. I really like his game and he wants to come here. But I’m sure a large part of Harrow coming to town was the fact that Lo Brown was coming. Harrow seems like a pretty honorable kid…but we are the school that gets hit by lightning every year.

  18. BJD95 07/13/2009 at 9:54 AM #

Again, it goes back to fault vs. responsibility. Lowe’s enablers want to talk about “fault” only, and do so in isolation (don’t you dare look for patterns!).

Here’s another item the enablers miss – Sidney Lowe’s job is to win games, not post impressive recruiting rankings. The latter only matters to the extent it leads to the former.

And invoking Tom O’Brien is the last thing Lowe enablers should do. It reminds everyone of what a good coach looks like. You see, recruiting is just a cherry on top when evaluating O’Brien – because he wins. He won at Boston College with recruiting classes ranked mediocre at best. He’s won at NC State with numerous walkons in the two-deep. Now, when you have a guy who can’t really coach – like Amato or Lowe – you have to grasp at straws when the games aren’t being played. Don’t talk about wins, talk about stars!!!!!

Everyone should take note of rtpack’s comments above. It all goes back to program management. Is there any wonder why lightning seems to strike more often when programs are poorly managed? And as I’ve said before, every loser has an excuse.

  19. packalum44 07/13/2009 at 9:59 AM #

This is great news. Lowe just bought himself another year. Rumor has it he’s read “Coaching for Dummies” this past summer so he’ll be awesome this year. Go Lowe!

  20. GApack04 07/13/2009 at 10:06 AM #

Talk about a punch to the stomach…next season is going to be very similar to the past few seasons. A few bright spots and lots of sloppy play. My biggest gripe is that this takes a ball handler out of the line-up. That just means more turnovers. In addition who will score for this team?? I mean T. Smith is a post player with horrible FT shooting and zero perimeter shot. If he doesn’t out muscle someone he will not score. Howell and Painter are bigs with potential, but neither can carry the load early on.

I lay the blame on Brown and Lowe on this one. Brown HAS to get the grades, and Lowe HAS to get him qualified. Now Lowe has egg on his face, but he may have bought himself another year with possibly Harrow and Brown coming together. If this team lays another stink bomb of a season then Harrow and Brown could be elsewhere.

Another thing with this talk of TOB and co. looking so good kinda makes me nervous too. I’m very interested to see how this football team plays with some pressure on it. The D can’t stop anyone, even more so now that Nate is likely done. And if Wilson goes down, which I’m sorry to say prob will happen can Glennon deliver right away? It’s amazing how quickly a small winning streak can change everything right??

  21. Thinkpack17 07/13/2009 at 10:14 AM #

“Is there any wonder why lightning seems to strike more often when programs are poorly managed?”

Yes, but TOB is a hell of a manager and he will get fried every year. It’s almost a welcome sight at this point, get it out of the way early.

“2). Would not have the guard play to compete with ‘the top tier’ (UNC plus teams who will eventually emerge).”

Meh. For the first time in a LONG time UNC’s backcourt does not scare me. Now their frontcourt is going to be crazy, but Drew II doesn’t put fear in my heart.

I was someone who supported Sendek until close to the very end? Why? Because he seemed to learn from his mistakes and was making incremental (though painfully slow) progress. I realize that was a mistake. Stars shoot to the top, not take baby steps. However, I always believed that Sendek could get over that hump with just another season as he was always on the cusp and lets face it, as a fan who learned to love State during the Les years, Herb at least won and went to post-season tourneys!

Lowe on the other hand has really shown no progress. It’s do or die for him. He hasn’t shown me he can learn or adjust to his team. That’s something he’s got to do to keep the faithful. I’m afraid he’s losing that fight.

Lowe is on the hot seat and he does need to succeed or the fans will look to spend their entertainment money elsewhere.

The waters just got a bit stormier. There were some things recently that pointed to this:
    – Continued rumors about not qualifying and grade issues
    – Lowe saying CJ would play the SG position. If Brown were coming, then CJ should have been penciled in as the starter at the SF position, not the SG position. If Brown were coming, I personally think that CJ wouldn’t have even been mentioned in the guard rotation.
    – Fowler coming right out and saying that Brown wasn’t yet qualified in his interview.

Now that this is public knowledge, I think:
    – That I no longer think we’ll finish 6th. We’ll probably be about 8th. We’re going to really struggle at the guard slots yet again.
    – The fire under SL’s chair just got a lot warmer. If we finish 8th – 12th, then I think SL is fired.
    – That Fowler cannot be gone quickly enough. We can’t afford him leading another men’s bball coaching search after the last fiasco.
    – That we’re about to be in the exact same spot we were with HWSNBN. After a poor year 4, we’ll have the potential for a very solid backcourt coming in (Brown/Harrow) if we keep Lowe. If we make a change, we probably lose the kids and be starting over.
    – That I still don’t understand the JD/JV late signings. One of these two just doesn’t make sense (and I could see it being either depending on how you look at it) even knowing Brown wasn’t going to qualify. I now understand why Lowe said that both of them will see the court.
    – That SL has a high risk/reward view when it comes to recruiting. He’s known about Brown’s grade issues for some time now. I personally thought there’d have been virtually no chance that Cousins or Wall would have qualified. We had the potential to have the #1 recruiting class had we landed all three and then have had none of the talent make it on the court. It seems like HWSNBN was too risk averse, but SL is too eager to take on risk. There has to be some balance in between.
    – That it looks more and more like Lowe might be a fantastic X’s and O’s assistant, but not someone who can shepherd a big time program.

  24. BJD95 07/13/2009 at 10:24 AM #

Sidney Lowe is also suited for the NBA, not college basketball. It has been and remains trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

ryebread is spot on – most of you remember Sendek’s fifth season. Congratulations, you are about to re-live it. For the newcomers, you will soon understand the agony that we old-timers rail about.
