Congratulations, Coach Avent & Aaron Bates!!

Just a little baseball news during the All-Star break – after 13 years without winning an ACC Championship or finishing in first place in the conference, NC State Head Baseball Coach Elliot Avent got a big boost to his program when former Wolfpack first baseman Aaron Bates was called up to the major leagues by the Boston Red Sox. (Link to N&O blog)

He struggled to hit the ball in his first couple of games last week, but then broke through with his first major league hit on Saturday. Then Sunday, just before the All-Star break, he broke through, going 3-for-4 with a run, a pair of doubles and an RBI.

You see, until Bates’ promotion, NC State was the only ACC Baseball program that did not currently have a single former player on a major league roster. (Note: Adam Everett was one of Avent’s biggest recruits and currently plays shortstop for the Detroit Tigers; but Everett actually fled NC State’s program and finished his college career playing for Ray Tanner at South Carolina.) This is obviously time to rejoice!

The most recent ACC Sports Journal broke down the players in the MLB by ACC institution and the numbers didn’t look good for the Wolfpack. (The ACCSJ must be inherently ‘negative’ because of their objective factual analysis, right?)

Georgia Tech – 11
Florida State – 9
Clemson – 6
Miami – 6
North Carolina – 5
Maryland – 4
Virginia – 3
Duke – 2
Wake Forest – 2
Boston College – 1
Virginia Tech – 1
NC State – 0 (unless you want to include a player that finished his college career at South Carolina)

In a timely piece, The Wolfpacker ran this feature with Avent titled, ‘We’re on the right track’, despite the fact that half of the ACC’s programs have participated in the College World Series in just the last four years. Of course, when you work for Lee Fowler, one would think that a program that just had its worst season in over 40 years is clearly ‘on the right track’.

I couldn’t help but fall in love the following quote that is CLASSIC NC State – bury your head and refuse to admit reality that cannot be refuted. How can any coach in west Raleigh ever be held ‘accountable’ when the leader of their Department can’t recognize the truth?

Like most coaches, Avent didn’t want to use the word “rebuilding” entering the season, but recognizes now that with the losses of offensive standouts Ryan Pond, Marcus Jones, Jeremy Synan and Matt Payne — along with the departure of pitchers Eryk Surkamp, Clayton Shunick and Eryk McConnell — there was little choice but to start over.

“You never want to use that word ‘rebuilding,’ and deep down it’s hard to admit that’s what happened, but when you lose that many guys, it doesn’t take much to make you realize you’re going to have to go through at least a regrouping period,” Avent said.

On the other hand, you can’t really argue with Avent when he is 100% correct – NC State is NOT rebuilding. To REbuild, one must have built something to begin with. Avent has never won a championship and more of his teams have struggled to simply make the NCAA Tournament in the last half of his tenure in Raleigh than in the first half of his tenure. Based on actual results, NC State is clearly in the lower half of ACC Baseball…but, Lee Fowler would call that ‘progress’ or ‘growth’ and then get mad if anyone would try to figure out HOW?

I am not going to belabor this point any more. If you’ve read this far, then you will certainly enjoy this entry that serves as a nice complement here.

Everett played his freshman year for Tanner. When Tanner left over the summer, Everett decided to explore his options and finally landed at South Carolina. State let him go without him having to sit out a year since he wanted so badly to go with Tanner. I know that Avent tried hard to keep Everett, but he was deadset on leaving.

As far as Ward and Hart go, those 2 guys work very hard and are good coaches. I don’t think the coaching staff is the issue. This year had to be miserable for Avent and I think the product on the field will be much improved from last year.

“Being an NCSU graduate (and my wife went there also), the one thing I really noticed was how absent NCSU coaches were around the state and at these events. Maybe they were there but they appeared to keep a low profile in comparison to the other schools.”

It’s not just Avent. Our rising Sr. (area) daughter has been playing the similar softball showcases for 2 1/2 yrs. all over the country.

You know how common it is to see Navas or staff at those tourneys? Guess.

Despite having serious looks by at least a dozen D1’s this yr. alone not one single inquiry or look from State. An invitation to their $375.00 elite camp…oh boy.

Meanwhile, I’m writing this after just returning from Boone last night where my kid was a guest of App State where they are really concerned about winning.

The newness of the softball program has worn off.

I’ve told ya’ll about how crushed I was about the fact that State was absent from the ACCT for the first time since inception, especially ’cause I played and won in the first three.

I challenge Avent to win an ACC title.

    Systemic. Period. Save O’Brien.

He liked Guzzo and Waggoner but they were released to apparently hire some pitching coach.

Waggoner left to be the Head Coach of CUSA Member Marshall

Joey Devine didn’t give up 3 grandslams in the playoff’s as a matter of truth he didn’t give up any grandslams in the playoff’s

But don’t let the truth get in the way of a good coach bashing.

Having just enough knowledge of our baseball program to be dangerous, I will say that we can start competing with the elite in both the ACC and Country then the AD decides to step up and fund the program so it can compete…FSU UNC USC and Clemson all have travel budgets larger then our entire Baseball Budget. To have had us at the level we have been at (except this year) should be considered amazing. To compare Avent to Sendek is also not fair. Herb was WELL paid and the last half of his tenure had the best facilites in the country. It would take Avent 7 years to make Herb’s one year paycheck. And while the Doak remodel has made it nicer…It was done on the cheap and is far from being a premier park…Until we get an AD that stops cutting corners and doing things on the cheap most of our teams will continue to disappoint…Being at the top isn’t cheap…and like most things in life you get what you pay for….And ALL of our none Football/Basketball sports are underfunded and except for a good year here or there will continue to disappoint Pack fans.

fv: I agree with your point about funding. I think as a school we’re interested in having an athletics program that is run on the cheap and that is run in the black.

That’s part of why as much as I don’t like LF and want him gone, I think it’s only fair and balanced to chart the results against the budget. My guess is that he’d love to have Oregon or Oklahoma’s budgets, but that he doesn’t have them.

If the school administration is only willing to pay at the bottom tier and we as the fans are expecting top tier results, then to me that’s unrealistic. LF (and the coaches below him operating on small budgets) are probably in a tough spot.

Just wondering how many other ACC head baseball coaches never played college ball?
