  • CHANGE IS COMING!  And we need your help.  If you have any computer or creative skills then please click here and think about submitting a new banner for the site as a part of our coming re-design.  Thanks so much!

  • While we are discussing the site, we would again like to thank the good folks at the ACC Sports Journal for including us in their ‘Pulse of the Fanbase’ feature yesterday.   Even more, we want to thank all of our readers for your fantastically generous comments in the comments section.  We also want to thank those delusional psychopaths who have the moral ethics and character for possum turd for showing your true colors for the world to see.

  • Speaking of yesterday’s Q&A with ACCSJ…their last question focused on Mike Glennon and I didn’t have very much to say.  It isn’t fair to put too many expectations on any unproven college athlete; especially a quarterback.  That ties nicely with the following quote that ESPN ran on their blog today as the best quote of the spring.

Best quote: "I hope he competes for the job and tries to take it away from Russell [Wilson]," NC State coach Tom O’Brien said of backup quarterback Mike Glennon. "… Glennon has that potential tag, potential means you haven’t done anything yet. He’ll certainly have his opportunity, he’s worked extremely hard out of season. He looked at a lot of tape. He’s much better than he was a year ago.

"It became pretty obvious to us after the first couple of scrimmages [last year] our choice was going to be either Glennon or Wilson coming into the fall. Russell ended up winning that competition then. He’s the incumbent and it’s his job, but I think Michael Glennon wants to take it away from him."

  • FWIW, I cannot imagine Glennon beating out Russell Wilson this year.  However, do not under-estimate the potential that Glennon could emerge to unseat Wilson in the future as our offensive line continues to improve.  My opinion is that the better our offensive line becomes, the more potent and effective Glennon becomes as an option under center.

  • We’ve covered NC State’s spring game a couple of times – most recently you can surf through this entry.  But, ACCNOw did us all a service by summarizing the attendance at local college’s spring games in this entry.  I can’t help but believe that Coach O’Brien’s masterful staff will have this in front of every high school player they recruit.  I also consider it a foregone conclusion that even if UNC-CH cancels next year’s spring game that they will announce attendance in excess of 15,000 fans.

Virginia Tech – 40,000
Florida State – 36,000
Clemson – 24,000
NC State – 21,075
Maryland – 10,323
Georgia Tech – 8,500
Virginia – 8,000
Duke – 4,162
UNC – 2,000

Miami, Wake Forest and Boston College did not give attendance figures for their respective spring games. Safe to say if it was near Virginia Tech’s neighborhood, we would have heard about it.

  • Rush the Court has a really good entry breaking down the NBA Draft’s early entrants.  Although accurate, the conclusions/comments are very embarrassing for NC State’s Brandon Costner

  • College Football News has been listing schools that have produced the best players at different positions through the years and NC State came in #17 in their wide receiver rankings.  The caveat of the list is that the results are supposedly based exclusively on college production, which probably hurts NC State a little as both Haywood Jefferies and Mike Quick’s performance in the NFL may have elevated our ranking.  Regardless, I would compare the college production of NC State’s Holt, Koren Robinson, Jerricho Cotchery and others with many of the schools above us, including Pitt, Wisconsin & LSU who all made the Top 10.

  • Yesterday was Erin Andrews 31st birthday.  (Link)  Sorry.  Just had to slip that in there.

  • The Atlantic Coast Conference’s Women’s Softball Championships are being played this weekend and the we’ve got a screenshot of the bracket for you to the right.  NC State finished 6th out of 8 teams in the conference – with Carolina finishing first.  Color me confused…I don’t follow softball enough to know all of the specifics…but it wasn’t that long ago when the “Reality Deniers” were holding our softball program up as some kind of paragon and example of our great athletics program.  Didn’t Lee Fowler and the Athletics Department prioritize softball as one of the key facilities that needed to be built?  Didn’t we build them a nice new stadium?  And, just a few years after building them a new facility the program is now battling in the bottom tier of the conference?

^ looks like current and recent students are even more beat up about our futility than us older alums. They have no proud history to fall back on and zero experiences of ever being good in their lifetime.

At the end of the day, a sports fan really just needs his team to be RELEVANT. You can handle a bad year or two. If your stars get old and somebody gets hurt and you have to rebuild, so be it.

It’s when ownership has no interest in doing anything except taking the checks from the revenue-sharing and the luxury-tax money…that’s when there’s no point.

There is no such thing as an LA Clippers fan. There are plenty of people who BUY season tickets, since it allows them to see NBA games at reasonable prices. But there are no Clippers fans. Why would you be a fan? If they luck into a good player, they’ll just trade him for a second-round pick.

The Royals, for years, were like that in baseball. There are plenty of hockey franchises like that. Fortunately, they NFL requires you to spend a certain amount on salaries and they have a hard cap…so it’s basically impossible to lose money as an owner. All of the revenue is shared, so there are no small market and large market teams.

But…NC State athletics is basically being run by Donald Sterling. We spend, what was it, $15 million less than anyone else in the league? Sidney Lowe? Tarantini? Avent? Really?

If everyone else is spending around $55 million and you’re spending less than $40 million….why are you spending that much? Why spend anything at all? It’s like entering the Indy 500 in a 1987 Plymouth Neon. What’s the point? You just get in everyone else’s way, you aren’t entertaining and it’s a waste of time.

I suggest the WPC send out a new letter to donors that includes a large refund check. From now on, all donations will be capped at $5. Anything over that will be returned. From now on, no tickets. First come, first served…and all events are free. Media contracts will be dissolved. We will no longer honor press credentials (why bother wasting THEIR time?). Oh, and no more scholarships. Teams will be fielded from tryouts amongst the intramural squads.

We are a television station who only broadcasts a test pattern.

^ Sad but true! (Should that be on the rant threat! 🙂 )

Noah – great analogy. Red mean go! In an 87 Plymouth.

^^ In fact, Noah’s morning rant did inspire me to open the rant thread.

One of the reasons I come to SFN is to read reasoned opinions about things NCSU. Even if I disagree with an opinion, I appreciate the reasoning behind it and often learn something from it. In light of that, has anybody seen or heard a posting, article, speech, conversation, etc. anywhere that presents a reasoned case for keeping Foulup as AD? I can’t recall a single one myself – only emotional responses to the “fire Fowler” calls – and I am curious. If you’ve seen or heard a reasoned case, please post the reasoning. And please avoid restating the case for Foulup being gone. Thanks

Because he knows where the photos are. Heh heh. No, really.

Yep, that IS a reason! 🙂

    Any more anyone?

Noah – i never post here, but when you mention the Royals in the same breath as the Clippers, I gotta jump in. The difference is, the Royals have a strong history. Clippers, not so much. I’m a lifelong Royals fan and a lifelong Pack fan. It has been a long, hard road, but I remain true to my teams (born in KC, raised in Raleigh). Go Pack, Royals and Chiefs!

  13. Noah 05/07/2009 at 1:19 PM #

What was the name of the Royals’ owner who had them in the WS in 1980 and 1985? Kaufman?

They were relevant under him. But, their history is basically being an unofficial farm club for the Yankees for decades (Roger Maris) and then having George Brett, and then going back to being everyone’s farm club.

I’m happy to see them have some success under Dayton Moore. He did a great job in Atlanta.

What was the name of the Royals’ owner who had them in the WS in 1980 and 1985? Kaufman?

Yes, Ewing Kauffman – strong community leader and founder of Marion Laboratories, a pharmaceutical firm in KC. The stadium is now named in his memory. (I lived in KC during those times.)

  15. kevirose 05/07/2009 at 2:14 PM #

Yep, Dayton has them almost relevant again. Ewing was the man. My Granny was second cousins with him! The “K” is rocking again. Pioli will do the same for the Chiefs. Now, we just need a real AD here and I’m in business!

I can’t take a team seriously when it has Sidney Ponson in its starting rotation.

  17. kevirose 05/08/2009 at 7:55 AM #

Sydney was solid in his last start. But, he’s just a stopgap until they bring up Zack Grienke Jr, in Luke Hochevar.

Anything is possible in the post-roid era of baseball. Carl Pavano was….GOOD…the other night.
