Report: John Wall to Kentucky [Update 10:10am]

Thank God the circus is over.

Slam magazine is reporting that John Wall will sign a letter of intent to play basketball for John Calipari at the University of Kentucky.

Link to ACCNow

Considered the best point guard prospect in the country, Wall went to three different high schools in five years in the Triangle. He exploded onto the national recruiting scene two summers ago at a camp in Philadelphia.

He was first pursued by the Wolfpack, then Duke joined the fray and even UNC’s Roy Williams made a late call to Wall during the Final Four. Instead of staying home, Wall apparently went with Calipari.

This would be the second time in three years Duke has lost out on a top-flight recruit, late in the signing process, to Kentucky (forward Patrick Patterson in ’07).

This is good for the Cliftons, Wall’s family, John Calipari and most definitely the folks at Nike. I am not sure that this is bad thing for NC State. (Of course, had Lee Fowler and Jim Oblinger not found a way to *#$#-up the hiring of John Calipari three years ago then Calipari would have probably already secured Wall’s commitment to play at NC State. But, nothing is surprising with our ‘leaders’. Oh…what could have been)

In fact, you will get NO complaints from us about missing on Wall. Heck, with all of the shenanigans and ‘smoke’ surrounding Wall’s recruitment it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that Carolina and Duke would have friggin paid Wall to come to State just so that we could end up back on NCAA probation.

Coach Lowe and staff gave it their best shot and appeared to back away from the youngster in recent weeks/months. Don’t misinterpret that statement – we would have surely taken Wall’s commitment, but there was no reason to spend time and resources stroking this kid – and his entourage’s egos. I think Coach Lowe handled it in the best way possible.

And, I hope that John Wall (and any other local college talent who is not tracking to play at NC State) are not allowed on campus or allowed to participate in pick-up games with our players in our facilities. People who are not a part of NC State, should not get the benefits that NC State offers. Go play at the YMCA if you aren’t running with the Pack.

IMHO, NC State’s program is not currently in a place to have effectively managed John Wall. Had Wall and all of his local influences landed in Raleigh then Coach Lowe’s Wolfpack would have run a tremendous risk of dealing with long term chemistry issues for a phenomenally limited short term gain.

In the end, Kentucky was probably the best fit for Wall and his services. Calipari has shown an ability to succeed on the court while generally controlling kids of Wall’s ilk off the court. Calipari, Coach K, Roy Williams have the credibility and the stature to ‘own’ their programs and know how to both control egomaniacs while demanding things of them. Quite frankly, Coach Lowe and NC State are not yet at that point. ‘Hosting’ Wall for a year was a much bigger gamble than many wanted to publically admit.

This is the link to Scout.com’s article.

Well, the name on the jersey has changed and Calipari switched locations but he’s going to get to coach Wall.

“It was a great job he did the last two years with his guards,” Wall told Scout.com. “I think my relationship with Coach Cal pushed them over. The other coaches did a great job but that relationship got them over.”

By the way…if John Wall doesn’t get some academic items in order, he won’t be playing college basketball for anyone.

“Calipari would have been here for a couple years, recruited some great players, got us somewhat deep into the tournament. Then Kentucky would have come calling, he would have jumped ship at NCSU, just like he did at Memphis, he would have taken all his good players with him or they would have transferred just like they did at Memphis”

Yes…much better to have simply missed the tournament, finished in the bottom third of the league every year, and still sucked.

And please stop with the “Lowe does things the right way!” bullshit. You’re embarrassing yourself. There’s no reason to allow Lowe and his cronies demean you.

  2. NCSUownzJoo 05/20/2009 at 9:24 AM #

MUCH better. You’re thinking about a SHORT TERM solution. I’m sorry but two years of making the tournament is not worth being stuck, this year, with almost NO scholarship players, no talent, and very few prospects for recruits, much less new coaches. It’s MUCH better. Lowe DOES do things the right way. He recruits character kids, with great 4-year talent and ability to represent this university well. Whether you like that or not, I don’t really care.

  3. NCSUownzJoo 05/20/2009 at 9:26 AM #

Just out of curiosity, hypothetically lets say that Calipari DID take our job, lets also say he DID leave this year, the same time he left Memphis. Who would you suggest we get as our coach? Also, lets say we had as many scholarship players jump ship that Memphis had. Who would you suggest we recruit to take their place?

  4. Thinkpack17 05/20/2009 at 9:31 AM #

Henderson leaving is surely good news, but I think I’d rather hear about Vasquez hiring an agent.

  5. Daily Update 05/20/2009 at 9:39 AM #

NCSUownzjoo: Why would Cal have left NC State under the assumption that he had the top recruiting class in the country (and one of the best ever) already committed here? Why would he have left the ACC?

Again, I use Billy Donovan as an example. He has had two chances to leave Florida for UK, but didn’t either time because he has everything he needs at Florida to compete at the highest level of college basketball. That would be the exact same situation as Cal at NC State.

So again, there is no reason to assume that he would have left NC State this year for UK. Should Memphis not have hired Cal because he was going to eventually leave? Should schools always hire shittier coaches just because that coach might leave in the future? Poor Xavier…they should really shoot for lower on the totem pole because they keep making Elite 8s and losing coaches every few years.

If he would have left this year, then our job would be much more high profile than when Herb Sendek left. IMO, we could have landed Sean Miller if we had tried hard enough even sucking the last three years. So I have no doubts that S. Miller would have followed John Calipari to NC State.

As far as what players would we be playing with this year. Who cares? With our current coach, we are going to be picked near the bottom of the conference and aren’t expected to make the NCAA tournament. So this theory that somehow Cal shouldn’t have been hired because if he left the program would face some issues is total bullshit. We are facing problems right now and potentially a coaching change next season having not hired John Calipari.

If Sidney Lowe had been successful the last three years, then he might be hired to be a head coach in the NBA. Should he not have been hired because we might lose him in the future? Since we might lose any successful coach in the future, then why even have a head coach? Let’s just field a team of walk-ons so that we will always suck and never will have to fear losing a head coach. I sure hope TOB doesn’t win an ACC title this year because he might be a top replacement for Charlie Weiss at Notre Dame. So I should be pulling for a mediocre season this year in football just so we don’t lose our head coach.

So with this logic, we should always strive for mediocrity so that we can keep mediocre coaches forever. Woohoo!!!! It is great being an NC State fan.

Great posts, Noah and Daily Update. You saved me alot of typing.

A few brief items to add:

    1) You do understand that nobody has had more recruiting overlap with Lowe than Calipari, right? But Cal is a thug, Lowe is a saint. Yes, please keep opining about intellectual honesty.

    2) Yeah, that World Wide Wes stuff is just shocking. SHOCKING. I’m sure that Sidney Lowe would never have an outside party steer kids (say, from a certain geographical area) his way, right?

  7. NCSUownzJoo 05/20/2009 at 10:03 AM #

He had one of, if not the top recruiting class in the nation at Memphis and he still left, so that’s not a valid argument. And who gives a fat babies ass what Donovan did? Donovan isn’t known as a snake-oil salesman either.

Why in Gods’ name would he have STAYED at NCSU? He would have had the opportunity to play in a conference almost as good as the ACC, without having to deal with Duke or Brokeback Hill, while making more money than we would be willing to give him at NCSU. Why the hell WOULD he stay? He ABSOLUTELY would have jumped ship, just like he did with Memphis. And no you don’t shoot for the low end of the totem pole, but you sure as HELL don’t bring in a coach for 3 years who’s just going to leave you worse off than you were when he got there.

The fact you said that the job would have been better after he left, with what? like 3 scholarship players, no talent incoming, no recruiting prospects and COMPLETELY bare in every other aspect of the program. Are you KIDDING ME? Why don’t you go ask Memphis how they’re going to be this year, or next year, or the next year. Where do you think Memphis is going to be? The EXACT same place we would have been. Struggling our asses off with NO prospects as well as NO chance at success for a few years. And why the hell would Sean Miller follow Cal for THAT? You can’t be serious… that had to be a parody post.

Who cares what players we would have been playing with? This isn’t a freaking fairy tale world where we just say, who cares? Those are REAL things that REAL people in REAL positions have to think about before they make retarded decisions like you’re advocating for. We’re facing problems because people, such as yourself, are making BS arguments, with BS basis, and BS claims. We have a coach, doing things the right way, bringing in very good talent, and having us in the running for some of the best recruits in the NATION. We don’t have a short term, but a long-term solution. He JUST brought in the #13 class in the nation and you’re basically on here calling them scrubs, get a clue.

Without going through WWW like Thad or Cal do, a program is NOT going to turn around in three years, I don’t care how good of a coach you are. Especially in the situation that NCSU is/has been in.

Like half of this thing got cut off and im not typing the whole thing again lol

  8. NCSUownzJoo 05/20/2009 at 10:04 AM #

BJD, there’s a HUGE difference in recruiting a kid and getting a handler to recruit the kid for you. If you can’t see that then I feel very sorry for your blind hatred towards our coach.

  9. bradleyb123 05/20/2009 at 10:05 AM #

“It is truly amazing to me how many people on here believe State will have a good basketball season in 2009-2010. Maybe I’ve missed something for the past three seasons; maybe we’re on the verge of a breakout season next year. Yeah, that’s it! Just wait ’til next season!!!”

61packer, have you ever heard about recruiting? We have SIX new players on the roster this year, and five of the players that have been here for a few years are gone. The moral of this story? We have a DIFFERENT team this year, almost top to bottom.

I look forward to this year’s team making you, Noah and a few others, eat your words. Hope you have a large appetite come late March (or, dare I say, early April?) 🙂

Realistically, this group of freshmen are likely to make plenty of freshman mistakes. But I still expect a pretty solid year from this group. In the next couple of years that follow, I believe this team can be a FORCE. I just hope Sid gets the time needed for this to run its course.

    GO PACK!!!

  10. BJD95 05/20/2009 at 10:05 AM #

I think there’s just a natural human assumption/defense mechanism to believe that a coach you “like” who can’t win must be nobly doing things the “right” way.

It bears no relation to reality, but whatever makes you feel better.

  11. NCSUownzJoo 05/20/2009 at 10:06 AM #

no bradley, didn’t you hear Daily Update? We basically recruited a bunch of scrubs this year… give me a freakin break.

  12. NCSUownzJoo 05/20/2009 at 10:08 AM #

BJD and there’s a difference in that and how you’re treating coach Lowe? you don’t like him, for whatever reason, so you rip him on things all day long, many things which he has no control over. But rather than acknowledge that, you just want to rip him, so you do. There’s no difference in what you’re doing and what we’re doing except for we’re not being negative all day, whereas you are.

  13. bradleyb123 05/20/2009 at 10:12 AM #

I don’t mind people having a negative opinion of Sid. I had one until about midseason. I won’t rehash my reasons for changing my opinion on Sid. I’m not happy with the results of the last three years, but I think Sid is learning. I’ll leave it at that.

What gets me is people STILL just being so down on the man, even when he does something good. It’s like they WANT him to continue to fail just so we can get rid of him. I would rather him get better and better so we don’t have to go through a needless coaching change again, that would FURTHER set back our program.

If you don’t like him, fine. But at least give him props when they are due, and support him 100% until the time comes that we need to call for his job. That time is certainly not now.

  14. BJD95 05/20/2009 at 10:13 AM #

“Like” has nothing to do with it, I assure you. I am being as objective as humanly possible, and being objective is consistent with my baseline personality.

Sidney Lowe is a highly paid professional and representative of my alma mater. Thus, I expect him to perform at a high level and in a way that reflects well upon NC State.

I’ve just seen and heard enough to draw a conclusion.

Lowe has plenty of “control” – he just had no idea what he was doing when he got here, and has proven to be a slow learner.

  15. NCSUownzJoo 05/20/2009 at 10:15 AM #

Really BJD? Outside of one sentence, how much have you congratulated Lowe on this great class he’s pulled in? You’ve done nothing but rip him over and over and over again, AFTER the season is over. So you’re ripping him on things from LAST YEAR. Not to mention, you’ve given very little if ANY props, for the things he’s accomplished in the offseason. You’re so far from “objective” it’s not even funny.

  16. BJD95 05/20/2009 at 10:23 AM #

I never have and never will believe there is any reason to be anything less than 100% honest with any opinions and analysis that one has about a coach.

I laid down a reasonable marker for what Lowe needs to do in order to desrve keeping his job after this seson (just like I laid down a reasonable marker for keeping the “heat” down after 2007-08). The fact that he missed the previous marker (plus other things I have heard over the past year in terms of program stewardship) naturally means that I will be somewhat more critical in the interim period.

Sure, I could be wrong. I’ve certainly been wrong before, and am fine with admitting as such. Lowe will get his fourth year, and he has ample opportunity to deliver some results.

This does go back to a downside involved in hiring an alumnus (even a quasi-alum). I believe people are less objective because they WANT him to succeed more than some guy off the street.

  17. Daily Update 05/20/2009 at 10:24 AM #

I will never understand the logic of some people. Maybe it is the self-defense mechanism that BJD95 mentions that cause some people to believe the things they do.

Maybe we will be good in 2011!?!?!?

  18. BJD95 05/20/2009 at 10:31 AM #

    1) It’s not a great class, it’s a solid, deep class. If Lowe had done a better job with his other classes, I would be very excited.

    2) On the one late recruiting decision that was possibly controversial (Davis was clearly a bad decision, Painter a no-brainer), I gave it positive marks (Vandenburg).

    3) Essentially, since the impressions we all formed during last season (based on cumulative evidence from Lowe’s entire tenure), NC State has added a commitment from Painter (assuming he qualifies) and lost a commitment from Leslie. There is also ZERO new blood on the staff. Objectively, why would that change my thinking about the overall health of the program?

  19. NCSUownzJoo 05/20/2009 at 10:32 AM #

BJD. That’s fine, but if ALL you’re going to look at is the negatives, and not the positives (ie #13 class in nation) then OF COURSE you’re going to see things in a bad light. You spend your time ripping what you see as his mistakes, whereas we spend our time giving him props for things he’s done well. Of course you’re going to think he sucks and we’re going to think he’s good. You’re just a lot more negative than we are.

  20. NCSUownzJoo 05/20/2009 at 10:36 AM #

    1) Better job on his other classes? He’s only had ONE real class. That was his second class. This third class was committed completely within a month or so of JJ committing. That’s not a fair scrutiny.

    2) Davis was NOT a bad decision. He is EXACTLY what everyone on this board and multiple other boards said that we were missing at NCSU. Someone who WANTED to be here, had talent, worked hard on every play, and would be a solid 4 year contributor at NCSU.

    3) What the hell does Leslie have to do with anything? He was committed for Harrows’ year? We added a commitment from Painter, but we also have Brown, Howell, and Wood. And as Leslie drops off the radar, Mychael Parker picks up the slack. Not committed, but you can’t question Lowe’s ability to recruit.

  21. BJD95 05/20/2009 at 10:40 AM #

We don’t allow post that call names or question “fan” status. Knock it off, and argue your point.

I will tell you exactly what I “want”, as if it matters. I want a clear, unambiguous marker for 2009-10. Make the NCAAT, and Lowe can stay. Miss it, and Lowe must go. I’d be very happy if Lowe clears the hurdle because it would give me objective cause for hope.

What I expressly don’t want is laying tracks for more excuses in the event 2009-10 is another bad season. I’m done with that. Completely.

Being an attorney, I work with lots of Hole and Duke fans (in fact, I’m the only State guy in my regular “sports” circle). I can assure you that no fans from other ACC schools think Lowe is anything to be feared or even semi-competent. They think our internal lamentations are funny because they are TRUE.

  22. blackdom 05/20/2009 at 10:43 AM #

^”You can’t question Lowe’s ability to recruit.” Am I missing something here?

  23. ryebread 05/20/2009 at 10:44 AM #

Daily Update: I agree with you that you should always strive to hire the best. You can’t worry about them potentially leaving you. Maybe they do, maybe they don’t, but you’ll typically be better for having them. By them making you better, then you have a more attractive environment and product to sell to their replacement.

When it comes to hiring, I’ve always tried to hire people better than me. If they run me out as a result, that’s fine, but I will have built something much stronger than I inherited. The hiring of our coaches should be done the same way.

What I don’t agree with though is that Calipari was the right coach for NC State nor the best candidate out there. Regardless of his W/L record, given his history and his associations, he was not a good fit (IMHO) for our job. This has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he might have left. This has nothing to do with sour grapes (as some insinuate must be happening). This had (and has) everything to do with a concern that we’d have wound up on probation.

Now, having said that, do I think that LF made the best hire? No. I thought and still think that Montgomery was the perfect man for the job and I’ve outlined my reasoning above.

Does it bother me that we’re fishing in the same pond as Calipari for recruits? Yes. At the same time, I see Duke, UNC and Kansas also casting lines in the same pond too. Maybe this is the type of pond we have to fish in to win at a high level. Somehow Duke, UNC and Kansas do it yet win “the right way.” I put that in quotes because I have thought and continue to think that a huge part of our problem is marketing and our external perception. Why isn’t someone taking a serious look at Duke for their involvement with Wall? They came in late, all the baggage fully on the table, engaged with the Cliftons and moved into his top 2. Why isn’t there the same scrutiny from the local media for being able to do so (or even going after that kid) that there would have been if we signed him?

Finally, do I have concerns about program management with SL? Absolutely. Someone who is objective and who has a pulse and a brain (and I don’t think that’s Fowler) should be watching things very closely. This (IMHO) is a make or break year for SL. I think we need to have that objective AD in place to watch it. That’s why I’m in favor of replacing Fowler now and giving his replacement a year to observe the current situation and pursue all his options.

  24. Thinkpack17 05/20/2009 at 10:45 AM #

At this point I like Parker. I really, really think he would be a great pick-up. Leslie might have done us a real solid by re-opening his recruitment.

  25. Thinkpack17 05/20/2009 at 10:50 AM #

“We don’t allow post that call names or question “fan” status. Knock it off, and argue your point.”

Uh…Is this about me? I didn’t question anyone’s fan-dom in the deleted post?
