Report: John Wall to Kentucky [Update 10:10am]

Thank God the circus is over.

Slam magazine is reporting that John Wall will sign a letter of intent to play basketball for John Calipari at the University of Kentucky.

Considered the best point guard prospect in the country, Wall went to three different high schools in five years in the Triangle. He exploded onto the national recruiting scene two summers ago at a camp in Philadelphia.

He was first pursued by the Wolfpack, then Duke joined the fray and even UNC’s Roy Williams made a late call to Wall during the Final Four. Instead of staying home, Wall apparently went with Calipari.

This would be the second time in three years Duke has lost out on a top-flight recruit, late in the signing process, to Kentucky (forward Patrick Patterson in ’07).

This is good for the Cliftons, Wall’s family, John Calipari and most definitely the folks at Nike. I am not sure that this is bad thing for NC State. (Of course, had Lee Fowler and Jim Oblinger not found a way to *#$#-up the hiring of John Calipari three years ago then Calipari would have probably already secured Wall’s commitment to play at NC State. But, nothing is surprising with our ‘leaders’. Oh…what could have been)

In fact, you will get NO complaints from us about missing on Wall. Heck, with all of the shenanigans and ‘smoke’ surrounding Wall’s recruitment it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility that Carolina and Duke would have friggin paid Wall to come to State just so that we could end up back on NCAA probation.

Coach Lowe and staff gave it their best shot and appeared to back away from the youngster in recent weeks/months. Don’t misinterpret that statement – we would have surely taken Wall’s commitment, but there was no reason to spend time and resources stroking this kid – and his entourage’s egos. I think Coach Lowe handled it in the best way possible.

And, I hope that John Wall (and any other local college talent who is not tracking to play at NC State) are not allowed on campus or allowed to participate in pick-up games with our players in our facilities. People who are not a part of NC State, should not get the benefits that NC State offers. Go play at the YMCA if you aren’t running with the Pack.

IMHO, NC State’s program is not currently in a place to have effectively managed John Wall. Had Wall and all of his local influences landed in Raleigh then Coach Lowe’s Wolfpack would have run a tremendous risk of dealing with long term chemistry issues for a phenomenally limited short term gain.

In the end, Kentucky was probably the best fit for Wall and his services. Calipari has shown an ability to succeed on the court while generally controlling kids of Wall’s ilk off the court. Calipari, Coach K, Roy Williams have the credibility and the stature to ‘own’ their programs and know how to both control egomaniacs while demanding things of them. Quite frankly, Coach Lowe and NC State are not yet at that point. ‘Hosting’ Wall for a year was a much bigger gamble than many wanted to publically admit.

This is the link to Scout.com’s article.

Well, the name on the jersey has changed and Calipari switched locations but he’s going to get to coach Wall.

“It was a great job he did the last two years with his guards,” Wall told Scout.com. “I think my relationship with Coach Cal pushed them over. The other coaches did a great job but that relationship got them over.”

By the way…if John Wall doesn’t get some academic items in order, he won’t be playing college basketball for anyone.

Finally. I am shocked, completely and absolutely shocked! Anyone who did not see this coming, I have some prime beach front property – let’s talk.

I wonder what kind of car John is driving this morning… or if his mom just accepted a position with the University of Kentucky Hospital.

I’m glad I don’t have to eat my keyboard (as I pledged to do if Wall went anywhere other than UK, soon after Calipari took the job).

Great signing for Coach Calipari, who will have Kentucky nationally relevant again in an instant. Oh, what could have been…

Personally, I am glad he did not come to NCSU. There was just too many risk possiblities that he could be very bad for the long term development of the program as it relates to everyone else we have on the team and those currently comitted.

We could have built the next year completly around him and he could fail miserably and still be gone after one year leaving a big mess behind. I think we will be much healthier as a team without him over the next 2-3 years.

I wish him the best and hope it all works out for him, but glad we didn’t have to take the risk.

I do feel a little sorry for the 3 poor souls on the Kentucky Basketball team that are about to lose thier scholarship. If I was a parent of one of those kids, I would be freaking mad as fire.

It will be interesting to see if Wall was worth all the hipe. I’m really glad Sid didn’t have to yank a scholarship from someone to give to Wall for just one year. That could of hurt us in the long run. I am really pleased with the group we have coming in. All and all they look more like good team players and not “me” players. Hopefully we will make to the NCAA and maybe just maybe we’ll meet up with ole Cal and the boyz and show em how the ACC likes to do it.

I won’t pretend I didn’t want Wall to come here. I did. I don’t think chemistry would have been a problem, except maybe for Javi and Mays. Wall would have fed the ball to other players and they would have loved him for it. It wouldn’t have been like JJ Hickson, where throwing him the ball down low was the equivalent of tossing it into a black hole, never to be seen again.

What I want to know is “why now?” Why didn’t he make this decision weeks ago? What did he learn last weekend that he didn’t already know a few weeks ago? Of course these are rhetorical questions, unless someone happens to know something.

I guess one good thing in this is that we can all move forward now.

I’m just glad he didn’t choose Duke or UNX. At least he won’t be adding insult to injury by beating up on us next year.

“By the way…if John Wall doesn’t get some academic items in order, he won’t be playing college basketball for anyone.”

What are his academic issues? Is he not academically eligible yet?

How poetic would the justice be if he ended up academically ineligible and just went pro next year!

  9. travelwolf 05/19/2009 at 10:20 AM #

AMEN! this is great news – i just didn’t want carolina or duke to get him! they’ve got plenty of talent and it will be hard enough to beat them anyway

  10. kyjelly 05/19/2009 at 10:32 AM #

Yes I guess it kinda blows that {“He needs 4 yrs theory to get his own players ” } out of the water.

  11. Daily Update 05/19/2009 at 10:34 AM #

Nice analysis by Statefans. Ultimately, NC State wasn’t positioned so that choosing NC State made sense for John Wall or for NC State.

Hopefully that will change in the future.

BJD95: Sorry, but I can’t agree with you on this one. I was SOOO thankful that NC State didn’t land Calipari because I KNEW he’d have us on probation by the time he left. Simply put, there’s a right way to win and a wrong way to win. Calipari (with his entourage that includes WWW) represents the wrong way to win. With him, we’d have made a couple of final fours, but ended up with the death penalty. He’d have walked away an even richer man, onto an even bigger pay day (maybe Kentucky, maybe Louisville after Pitino, maybe a place like Syracuse after Beiheim leaves) without any ramifications and we’d have been left holding the bag.

The bigger concern that I had with the administration was not missing on Calipari — it was that we were actually considering that guy to begin with. It’s not that I think that NC State is “better” than Calipari (or Kentucky). It’s that given our history, we have to be cognizant of how little slack we’re going to get with the NCAA and we need to avoid coaches who play in the grey area. If the only way we can win is by hiring one who is notorious for doing so, then I’d rather not win.

The real “what might have been” in the coaching search in my mind was missing on Montgomery. He’ll have Cal — which has zero facilities (I’ve been there), no fan interest in basketball (that’s a non-revenue sport school as I’ve witnessed first hand) and no real historical or recent success — solidly in the Sweet 16 year in and year out. He’ll do it while also graduating players and having a high character quotient.

If Montgomery can take Stanford (which has done nothing in bball before his arrival or since his departure) to yearly #1 – #3 seeds and the Sweet 16, imagine what he could have done with NC State? Imagine a hire that would have performed at a level that kept both the fans AND the academics happy? Imagine what a perfect compliment he’d have been to O’Brien and ultimately our core values as alumni. Imagine recruiting on a truly national level. Imagine a coach who was ready to hit the ground running from second one. Imagine what might have been…..

Has Painter qualified? Does anyone know if he has?

  14. GAWolf 05/19/2009 at 10:42 AM #

I sure hope the fall semester (only) professors in Lexington are agile enough to dodge flying cell phones…

  15. GAWolf 05/19/2009 at 10:44 AM #

Also, can we go ahead and accept the fact that as goes Wall so goes CJ Leslie? Do we really need to put ourselves through the torture that was the Wall recruitment all over again? Would it not be best for our staff to turn our focus towards someone else who might actually consider coming here? Say maybe another kid from Georgia rather than a 2760? area code?

Just an FYI that doesn’t matter – in a recent post on another topic I forget, someone said Wolfpackhoops had posted some information before you did.
Well, I was on that site this morning about 9:30 and no post on Wall. Now, I go there and they have a post timestamped 8:40AM but the first comment isn’t until 9:37AM.. so something is definitely wonky about what time goes on their posts.
No big deal, just wanted to let anyone out there know who may try to claim WPH is posting info early when their site’s time stamps are incorrect.

“Has Painter qualified? Does anyone know if he has?”

I think I read somewhere that Painter qualifying academically was not going to be a problem. Seems like he just needed to make a “B” in this one class or something. I’m just going from memory, though, so take this for what it’s worth. 🙂

  18. Noah 05/19/2009 at 10:49 AM #

Good luck to John Wall. Hope he stays all four years at Kentucky and gets his degree and everything.

  19. BJD95 05/19/2009 at 10:56 AM #

John Calipari is AWESOME, and I would be surprised if he lands UK on probation. He didn’t lead to any sanctions for Memphis, and they don’t enjoy “most favored nation” status with the NCAA, either.

All Calipari does is win. Those left in his wake always can and will grumble about “doing things the right way” – but I would take his results any day of the week. Hell, I would LOVE having all of the Hole and Duke alums in the area fuming mad over how NC State is “winning the wrong way.”

This is all academic, anyway. At NC State, it’s just a matter of whether we lose basketball games the “right” or “wrong” way. Winning doesn’t enter the equation.

  20. GAWolf 05/19/2009 at 10:57 AM #

(Misread Noah’s post and this is irrelevant. Sorry.)

  21. rtpack24 05/19/2009 at 11:02 AM #

Cal told UK before they hired him that he would bring Cousins and Wall with him. Now the only thing that stops this from happening is if neither qualify.

  22. Thinkpack17 05/19/2009 at 11:06 AM #

When you have an endless parade of one-and-doners does it still feel like a college team? I mean Memphis was basically an NBDL team. Kids were barely unpacked before they were gone. I’m not saying that I wouldn’t take a constant pipeline of NBA talent, but I just think it wouldn’t feel as good as winning in the old school manner. Does Derrick Rose really think of himself as a “Memphis” kid? Or does he think of Memphis as the city I played in before I realized my real goal?

  23. 61Packer 05/19/2009 at 11:08 AM #

Who needs Wall anyway? We’ve got Lowe and Towe. Bring it on!

  24. Daily Update 05/19/2009 at 11:09 AM #

Totally agree with BJD95. Cal was one of the few coaches in the country that was 100% guaranteed to make NC State one of the best programs in the country and he would have done it in only a couple of years. Unfortunately, we should have hired him several years before he turned Memphis into a national powerhouse to increase our chances of landing him.

  25. ms termeaner 05/19/2009 at 11:29 AM #

We have Lowe and Towe?? What are we bringing on?
