Hill: I feel like I’m going to get a chance

We’re going to take a step back from the events of the past few days and look at something positive: a person who is actually representing our university, and doing it well.

Anthony Hill

Anthony Hill, TE Houston Texans

Anthony Hill is happy with where he landed as a 4th round pick to join the Houston Texans. A Texas native, Hill had a homecoming of sorts rejoining the family he left when deciding to play for the Wolfpack. The selection by Houston as opposed to Dallas displeased a few family members, but they’re happy to have him back and we in the Wolfpack Nation certainly are happy to see Hill playing at a higher level.

The Houston Chronicle ran a story on Hill underlining his talent as an all-purpose tight end.

“I think he caught my eye first when we were watching N.C. State and evaluating tight ends,” Texans tight ends coach Brian Pariani said. “You could see the strength he had.

“I think what Anthony adds is that he’s a line-of-scrimmage player who adds toughness to what we’re trying to do in the running game.”

“I talked to coach Pariani on Monday, and we were talking a little about my role,” Hill said. “Obviously I’m considered to be a good blocker, but they didn’t plan on me just coming in and blocking on every single play. They want me catching the ball. He told me not to expect to be a one-dimensional type of guy.”

Hill had an up-and-down career battling injuries and quarterback incompetence along the way. So it’s no surprise that Hill is being considered a “block first” type of tight end. What else are you going to do without a capable quarterback giving you chances to make plays on the receiving end.

Year Yds Avg TDs
2008 234 12.3 4
2006 478 10.6 0
2005 140 9.3 1
2004 0 0.0 0

It looks that Hill will have his chance to do just that with the Texans.

“This is the situation I really hoped for,” Hill said. “Just to have a chance. I feel so many times it’s just you come into a system but don’t really have a chance to see the field except maybe on special teams. I feel like I’m going to get a chance, and all I have to do is show up and prove to them I can handle it.”

Hill still has to win a spot as the #2 tight end, but if Hill shows the hard work and dedication that was on display here, there is no doubt that he’ll see the gridiron sooner or later.

This was an excellent article on Anthony Hill. The Texans have to improve in the red zone by scoring more touchdowns instead of field goals. That is how Anthony Hill can make the roster, by making plays in the red zone, either blocking or receiving. Owen Daniels is a Pro Bowl TE who will be the primary concern as a pass catcher for most defenses, that might get Hill some weaker coverage.

With Frank Bush as the new DC and Mario on the roster as well, Wolfpack Nation should be following the Texans this fall.

Amen to that! And great timing as I am actually wearing my Houston Texans baseball cap this morning.

With Mario, Frank Bush, Anthony Hill AND Texpack down there we should all have the Texans on our radar. Not to mention the five years that I spent there 😉

Good luck and go get ’em Anthony …

I like the Texans and hope they can break through to the playoffs this season. It doesn’t hurt that they’ve had more Pack players on their roster already than the Panthers probably ever will. Now if Holt would’ve just signed with them …

There is no conspiracy to avoid NCSU players in Charlotte. You’re just going to have to believe me on this.

Every NFL scouting department has a lean to some geographical area. You end up with guys that are just more comfortable with one part of the country over another. The Panthers scouts, at the moment, are much more comfortable with Southern California. They feel like they can get much more accurate information on the guys at SC and UCLA than they can elsewhere. Since those two schools pump out a ton of NFL players, everyone is comfortable with it.

^Yes, I believe that. What I said was mostly in jest …

It has been said plenty of times in the past (not by you) in complete seriousness.

I think Hill has great upside. He wasn’t given much to work with (QB) wise, then the injury bug. He’s proven to be a very good TE, and I think will be a great compliment to Daniels. If Schuab and Johnson can stay healthy, they have a formidable offense in Houston.
