Top Basketball ADs and Boston College News

Here is a list of the “Top 10 Athletic Directors in Basketball”. Two ACC athletic directors made the list, but for some reason the author forgot to include Lee “I know basketball” Fowler. There is a suggestion on that site (not from us) for the author to come up with a list of the 10 worst Athletic Directors, so stay tuned.

I follow what happens at Boston College now that Tom O’Brien is our football coach and there have been some interesting occurrences that were worth discussing in relation to NC State.

After two straight appearances in the ACC title game, Boston College Athletic Director Gene Defilippo recently fired Jeff Jagodzinski for interviewing for the New York Jets’ head coaching position. That led to promoting long-time defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani which was not necessarily popular among BC faithful.

This week Boston College announced an extension through 2014 for Defilippo which was met with mixed reviews by BC fans. Here is some commentary from a BC blogger:

Personally I think the extension was premature. Gene is currently under contract until 2011. Was he going anywhere? Did we need to give him more money given the current ticket sales and donation challenges? Also, what happens if the Spaz decision proves to be a poor one? Gene will get much of the blame for that. If things don’t go well that means we could be buying out a football coach and AD.

If you remember way back to April of 2007, then our own Lee Fowler was granted an extension through 2013 with a basketball program and football program far less successful than either of the respective programs at Boston College.

Since Defilippo’s hiring in 1997, BC’s basketball program has been to at least 8 NCAA tournaments, won 3 regular season Big East titles, and won 1 Big East Tournament title. In the meantime, the football program has the 21st best overall winning percentage in the nation, 1 Big East title, 2 Atlantic Division titles, a tie for 1st place in the Atlantic Division, and has never finished lower than 2nd.

At the time of Fowler’s extension, NC State basketball program had been to 5 tournaments in 7 years, had won 0 ACC regular season titles and 0 ACC Tournament titles. In football, NC State only had the 46th best overall winning percentage, no conference titles, and no Atlantic Division titles. In fact, we had just gone 2-6 in the ACC and finished in last place in the Atlantic Division which was our worst overall season in about a half century.

So given these huge differences in terms of accomplishments (not counting BC’s two national titles in hockey, 2 runner-up finishes, and 2 other trips to the Frozen Four during Defilippo’s tenure), after a 3 year extension Defilippo is at BC currently with a 5 year contract. Compare that to Fowler who at the time received a 3 year extension from NC State giving him a 6 year contract.

I thought the differences in results for Defilippo and Fowler and the two extensions were worth noting and comparing. What criteria was used by NC State that led them to the offering of a longer extension for a far less successful employee? The BC blogger brought up some great questions and the point about having to buyout the contracts of two major employees at the same time can also be asked/applied to the situation surrounding Fowler’s extension as well.

Some more comments from the BC blogger:

During the Jags firing I found myself at the center of a lot of BC speculation, gossip and positioning. While it was clear Gene had Father Leahy’s ear and support, he is not universally loved and supported. There are many serious donors who have been turned off by him and who felt he mishandled the Jags firing and subsequent search. Some friends of Gene also wondered if the whole saga hadn’t taken a lot out of him and if he would hang it up before his contract ran out. This extension brings more clarity to all the speculation. Gene obviously still has enough support around BC to get this extension. And he seems like he wants to hang around BC for a few more years.

In news today that made the Boston Globe, the largest donor to the football program has resigned from the Board of Trustees.

The job may have gotten tougher with the resignation of Greg Barber, a member of the Board of Trustees.

Barber’s relationship with Boston College dates more than 40 years. His connection with BC athletics is not quite as long, but just as significant, highlighted by the Gregory P. Barber and Family Endowment for the Head Football Coach, a gift of $2.5 million, the largest contribution ever at The Heights. Add another $1 million gift for the construction of the Yawkey Athletic Center, and Barber, BC ’69, has made a significant financial contribution to his alma mater.

But last week, Barber quietly resigned from the 20-member board. He began contributing to the athletic program – primarily football – when Rev. J. Donald Monan, S.J., was the school’s president and Chet Gladchuk was the athletic director, which led to an endowment for the head football coach.

During the past few years, however, Barber has maintained a much lower profile. When asked yesterday why he was resigning, Barber said, “No comment.”

When asked if he intended to maintain the flow of contributions, now in the $4.5 million range, Barber said he had not made up his mind.

Welcome to NC State Jodi Foster, I mean Kellie Harper!

  2. newt 04/16/2009 at 8:54 PM #

At the WRAL link, Dane Huffman writes a blog that State fans are on Fowler’s case lately as a result of not hiring Glance – talk about missing the boat.

  3. Tampa-Pack 04/16/2009 at 9:05 PM #

First – Great press conference. She definately “won” the press conference, looks like she could be very successful here.

Second – I haven’t seen a live shot of Lee for some time, since I live out of the area, but it looked to me like someone just killed his dog. I have to believe that coupled with the “I have a contract” statement from the other day that something is going on behind the scenes. New coaching hires have to be one of the highlights of an AD’s job and he looked as far from that as possible.

Has anyone read what Dane Huffman wrote at WRAL website. Essentially he thinks everyone(State message boards) is upset with Lee because of not hiring Glance. He doesn’t even get the real reason why so many of us do not think LF can do the job. LF is not going anywhere.

I for one am not happy that Stephanie Glance wasn’t rewarded for her loyalty to the Wolfpack program any better than what she got today. What could one or two seasons at the most with her as HC possibly have done to hurt our women’s basketball program? But now we have Coach Stephanie Harper, and I wish her well, and I believe she’ll do well as long as she’s here.

But how long will she be here? Cullowhee is in North Carolina, but culturally it’s much closer to Knoxville than it is to Raleigh. Plus, Harper’s roots and success in Tennessee make me believe that she’ll be here only long enough to pad her resume for the next offer, which will probably come from west of here. With Wolfpack administrative leadership likely to remain at or below its current level until at least 2013, despite what I’ve read on here all week, I think we may have hired our women’s version of Lou Holtz- three and out. Enjoy it while you can.

The media, whether it’s sportswriters or the political types just don’t seem to be very smart. That article about Fowler totally misses the boat!

Picking an outsider is one thing, continuing to let the entire athletic department go down the tubes is a whole different situation! And Obie, if you don’t get it, maybe you better go back to the food science department and bake bread!

Is that fool a UNC grad that wrote that article? If so, that explains it!

  8. old13 04/16/2009 at 10:11 PM #

Gowolves, it could be because the article is about the HC hire that Huffman was addressing just the Glance issue in connection with it. Nothing in the article related to Foulup’s overall (lack of) performance. I was more concerned about the Campbell and Oblinger statements. But they could just be “don’t-let-the-cat-out-of-the-bag” rhetoric for the public, too. So I guess we’ll just be patient for another lifetime.

61Packer, you could be right about Harper. Only time will tell. Maybe she’s the type that wants to build and run something of her own. At NCSU she replaces a legend who helped build NCAA WBB, but takes over a program that has not done so well in recent years; whereas at UT, she would follow a legend in on-court performance in a program that’s already considered tops. It kind of depends on what she wants to do, assuming, of course, that she does well at NCSU.

    “Direct Quote from Lee Foulup-
It’s a part of my job. We don’t get any wins, only losses.”

    Especially at NC State.

“That’s one of those things about being an AD in this media savvy age with the Internet.”

It’s called heightened accountability. Yes it allows people to react quickly and irrationally at times, but it also makes it harder to cover up a crappy performance.

  10. redfred2 04/16/2009 at 11:16 PM #

First off, about the interview, Kelly Harper was attempting to arouse some feedback from those people present at her introduction, but WTH???!!! She had to beg them to even clap when she talked about beating the “various shades of blue”. NC State is stuffy and completely dull, no two ways about it.

Secondly, anyone who is worried about Harper leaving NC State for greener pastures, that is just fact of life with NC State. It really doesn’t take too very much to out green those brilliant folks in Raleigh.

  11. Greywolf 04/17/2009 at 1:15 AM #

    fred,
Kay Yow was at NCSU for 30+ years. Somebody liked the women’s basketball program. NCSU women play in a 12,000 seat arena, the offices are very nice, we worked it out so her hubbie could assist her here and she really did not seem to be the “ambitious” type. Her passion for winning was clear and in contrast to HWHNBN, she knows the school colors. LOL
Don’t let the nervous neddies scare you into fearing she’s 3 and out. (BTW Holtz was 4 and out, not 3 and out.)

  12. Greywolf 04/17/2009 at 1:24 AM #

Don’t take anything that Obie or Campbell said to mean anything about Lee.
I would put more stock in Fowler’s demeanor at the pressie than what anyone said to a reporter. LF looked and sounded more like he was presiding over a funeral than announcing a major hire. Come to think of it tho, that is the way he always seems to me. He looks and acts like I do when I have major effed up. Wait… 😉

  13. Wulfpack 04/17/2009 at 6:01 AM #

The media is completely misinformed about LF. I wake up and get to read about how LF made an excellent WBB hire and how great his TOB hire was. Apparently, he did have a whole lot to do with the Harper hire. But TOB? Come on.

If I remember correctly, LF did say one of the huge upsides to Harper is that she has won as a head coach. I guess he’s learning from his mistakes.

  14. TOBtime 04/17/2009 at 6:53 AM #

Considering how much time foul-up had to think about the mechanics of the hiring process he should have made a decent hire. Kay was in a steady decline for at least 2 years. Even if it was only for 1 year foul-up should have had time to run his ideas by anyone who would talk to him.
Welcome Coach Harper! None of us like blue either.

  15. PackisRolling 04/17/2009 at 7:02 AM #

Unless Oblinger and Campbell flat-out lied to WRAL reporter for that article, Lee ain’t going anywhere any time soon.

  16. Tampa-Pack 04/17/2009 at 7:06 AM #

I caught that quote about “she has won as a head coach”. Imagine that, an AD realizes that success as a head coach somewhere might lead to success as a head coach. Great!

  17. Wulfpack 04/17/2009 at 7:29 AM #

It’s so comforting to know that our MBB program is a guinea pig for the WBB program. Glad we could help you out there, ladies.

In all seriousness, I am in agreement that this is a great hire and look forward to the year’s ahead.

  18. newt 04/17/2009 at 7:44 AM #

Seems like a loser’s mentality to be thinking that Harper will build her resume and leave.

  19. Packman02 04/17/2009 at 7:50 AM #

^ Let’s hope that we’re eventually in a position to have to worry about her leaving. Such a situation would imply that she’s been a resounding success – which I think she will be.

And could any of us ever, honestly, disparage her if she resurrects NC State, achieves un-NC State-like success in her sport and then becomes numero uno for the eventual opening at Tennessee?

    Go get ’em, Kellie!

  20. Packman02 04/17/2009 at 8:00 AM #

^ Side-note. In taking a quick look at one of the photo galleries from yesterday’s presser (posted on either PackPride or TheWolfpacker), I noticed that Sid Lowe showed up to support Coach Harper and the Wolfpack Women.

A very class move, in my opionion. Regardless of how our feelings may differ, regarding the direction of hoops under Coach Lowe, I dare anyone to question his unbridled dedication and loyalty to NC State.

Not trying to get on my soapbox and start (another) Sid debate – but I did want to give credit where credit was due.

  21. Noah 04/17/2009 at 8:08 AM #

it had an interesting quote from Fowler regarding wanting David Horning to replace him when he leaves but that he may not get it just because that’s what he asks for

I think there’s enough room on this rail headed out of town for the both of them.

Unless Oblinger and Campbell flat-out lied to WRAL reporter for that article, Lee ain’t going anywhere any time soon.

Yes, and as we all know, every quote given to a reporter is 100 percent accurate.

  22. ChemE79a 04/17/2009 at 8:10 AM #

Unless the succeeding a legend thing scares people off, Tennessee will be able to get almost whoever they want when it is time to hire a new WBB coach. If our new coach has done well enough to be considered for that position whenever the time comes we will be glad we hired her whether she stays or goes.

  23. choppack1 04/17/2009 at 8:21 AM #

It’s not unusual for a person who writes for a living to miss the greater point. The quote in question is this:

Fans can have an impact on high-profile athletic positions. Coaches who don’t win, and don’t draw fans, get fired. And athletic directors who lose support of the fan base raise the concern of chancellors.

“Fowler, in his time at State, has been a patient leader who has improved facilities, mingled at length with fans and been candid and open with the press. But State trails its ACC rivals in many sports, and the fact that Fowler went against the wishes of Yow and decided not to promote Glance raised the ire of some Wolfpack fans.”

Uhh, Huffman – it’s not just our ACC rivals that we trail – we trail MOST OF THE ACC IN MOST SPORTS.

I swear, I don’t know what these guys look at – but there is no way anyone can look at our overall results and conclude, “We are heading the right direction.”

Finally, while Fowler got a lot of heat for not choosing Glance for some, in the long run, this was small potatoes.

This kind of crap just makes me want to vomit.

  24. PackisRolling 04/17/2009 at 8:25 AM #

noah…tell me how they turn around and give fowler the boot one day after they ‘voice support’ for him and his handling of the search publicly?

believe me, i hope you’re right.

  25. Noah 04/17/2009 at 8:33 AM #

noah…tell me how they turn around and give fowler the boot one day after they ‘voice support’ for him and his handling of the search publicly?

believe me, i hope you’re right.

Easy. You issue a statement that it’s become clear that the university and Lee Fowler no longer see eye-to-eye and it’s in everyone’s best interests to part ways. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Or you allow him to find a place to land and then he gets to say the same thing.

Or you say, “New facts have come to light and it’s clear that a change was necessary.”

Or you do an annual evaluation and say, “Man…once we took a look at this guy’s job, we realized that he SUCKED.”

No one cares what you told someone at some presser to announce a new women’s coach. Seriously…at those types of PCs, everyone is everyone else’s BFF and the coach you hired was the only one you seriously considered and it’s a golden opportunity and everyone’s got a big happy smile.

It’s bullcrap and everyone knows it. Part of the game.
