Top Basketball ADs and Boston College News

Here is a list of the “Top 10 Athletic Directors in Basketball”. Two ACC athletic directors made the list, but for some reason the author forgot to include Lee “I know basketball” Fowler. There is a suggestion on that site (not from us) for the author to come up with a list of the 10 worst Athletic Directors, so stay tuned.

I follow what happens at Boston College now that Tom O’Brien is our football coach and there have been some interesting occurrences that were worth discussing in relation to NC State.

After two straight appearances in the ACC title game, Boston College Athletic Director Gene Defilippo recently fired Jeff Jagodzinski for interviewing for the New York Jets’ head coaching position. That led to promoting long-time defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani which was not necessarily popular among BC faithful.

This week Boston College announced an extension through 2014 for Defilippo which was met with mixed reviews by BC fans. Here is some commentary from a BC blogger:

Personally I think the extension was premature. Gene is currently under contract until 2011. Was he going anywhere? Did we need to give him more money given the current ticket sales and donation challenges? Also, what happens if the Spaz decision proves to be a poor one? Gene will get much of the blame for that. If things don’t go well that means we could be buying out a football coach and AD.

If you remember way back to April of 2007, then our own Lee Fowler was granted an extension through 2013 with a basketball program and football program far less successful than either of the respective programs at Boston College.

Since Defilippo’s hiring in 1997, BC’s basketball program has been to at least 8 NCAA tournaments, won 3 regular season Big East titles, and won 1 Big East Tournament title. In the meantime, the football program has the 21st best overall winning percentage in the nation, 1 Big East title, 2 Atlantic Division titles, a tie for 1st place in the Atlantic Division, and has never finished lower than 2nd.

At the time of Fowler’s extension, NC State basketball program had been to 5 tournaments in 7 years, had won 0 ACC regular season titles and 0 ACC Tournament titles. In football, NC State only had the 46th best overall winning percentage, no conference titles, and no Atlantic Division titles. In fact, we had just gone 2-6 in the ACC and finished in last place in the Atlantic Division which was our worst overall season in about a half century.

So given these huge differences in terms of accomplishments (not counting BC’s two national titles in hockey, 2 runner-up finishes, and 2 other trips to the Frozen Four during Defilippo’s tenure), after a 3 year extension Defilippo is at BC currently with a 5 year contract. Compare that to Fowler who at the time received a 3 year extension from NC State giving him a 6 year contract.

I thought the differences in results for Defilippo and Fowler and the two extensions were worth noting and comparing. What criteria was used by NC State that led them to the offering of a longer extension for a far less successful employee? The BC blogger brought up some great questions and the point about having to buyout the contracts of two major employees at the same time can also be asked/applied to the situation surrounding Fowler’s extension as well.

Some more comments from the BC blogger:

During the Jags firing I found myself at the center of a lot of BC speculation, gossip and positioning. While it was clear Gene had Father Leahy’s ear and support, he is not universally loved and supported. There are many serious donors who have been turned off by him and who felt he mishandled the Jags firing and subsequent search. Some friends of Gene also wondered if the whole saga hadn’t taken a lot out of him and if he would hang it up before his contract ran out. This extension brings more clarity to all the speculation. Gene obviously still has enough support around BC to get this extension. And he seems like he wants to hang around BC for a few more years.

In news today that made the Boston Globe, the largest donor to the football program has resigned from the Board of Trustees.

The job may have gotten tougher with the resignation of Greg Barber, a member of the Board of Trustees.

Barber’s relationship with Boston College dates more than 40 years. His connection with BC athletics is not quite as long, but just as significant, highlighted by the Gregory P. Barber and Family Endowment for the Head Football Coach, a gift of $2.5 million, the largest contribution ever at The Heights. Add another $1 million gift for the construction of the Yawkey Athletic Center, and Barber, BC ’69, has made a significant financial contribution to his alma mater.

But last week, Barber quietly resigned from the 20-member board. He began contributing to the athletic program – primarily football – when Rev. J. Donald Monan, S.J., was the school’s president and Chet Gladchuk was the athletic director, which led to an endowment for the head football coach.

During the past few years, however, Barber has maintained a much lower profile. When asked yesterday why he was resigning, Barber said, “No comment.”

When asked if he intended to maintain the flow of contributions, now in the $4.5 million range, Barber said he had not made up his mind.

“but NO ONE at WFU would debate Wellman’s inclusion. He’s simply amazing.”

I would. This list is titled Top 10 Athletic Directors in Basketball”. I would put Wellman in the top 5 of overall AD’s but basketball is one area where his results are not close to Top 10. First off, this list includes Women’s Basketball and this is arguably Wake’s worst sport during Wellman’s tenure. They hit their peak this year with a WNIT first round loss.

Wellman is given a lot of credit for forcing Dave Odom out at Wake after an embarrassing first round NCAA tournament loss to Butler. I believe this was a good move but Prosser, for all the energy he gave to Wake basketball never came close to reaching the peaks they enjoyed under Odom (2 ACC Championships – the real kind and a final 8 appearance). I also think Dino Gaudio is the single worst hire of Wellman’s tenure. Time will tell on this but please don’t bring up that they were ranked number 1 in January – the story for Wake this year was a first round NCAA tournament rout by Cleveland State in spite of having three first round draft picks on the floor.

Does anyone really think Fowler has screwed up so bad that buying out his contract that runs for four more years is feasible in this economy or would the school risk such a PR move when the state has such a budget crisis? Tough move for the board and the chancellor even if they want to replace him.

I think if any serious movement is made to replace Fowler, it will have to be at the hands of the Wolfpack Club agreeing to pay off his contract. That is a tough thing to do considering how close the WFC works with the AD’s office.

App wants Buzz Peterson and have upped their initial offer. That was reported today.

  4. Gene 04/16/2009 at 2:45 PM #

I guess that it’s possible that she could be both Lee’s hire and Lee could be out of here.

Todd Turner did something similar with the Sendek hire in 1996.

  5. highstick 04/16/2009 at 3:03 PM #

Remember MJ and Peterson were roommates. Bob Johnson also announced he’d be will to sell the Bobcats to MJ. So don’t bank on Peterson going to App.

Pay off his contract? Are you insane? Have you lost your…oh…sorry. Didn’t see you there.

    Never mind.

any word from the presser about Jolly? Fowler? Sid?

  8. Wolf Dog 04/16/2009 at 4:05 PM #

Fowler’s extension makes grounds for termination virtually impossible legally. Can’t say his job performance lacking when he just was rewarded for it. Only way he goes is with a buyout. Who wants to pony up WFC money for that?

If there is one thing Lee Fowler does know – it is Ultimate Frisbee! Seriously guys, our ultimate frisbee team is making some noise and advancing to the sectionals in one of the toughest regions in the league. We’ve consistently finished in the top 20 in 8 of the last 10 years with the lowest ranking of 24 (~140 competing teams), and won a national title in 1999. Our women haven’t been quite as good, but aren’t bad. Don’t know if it counts in the cup, but its something.

NC State should petition for some bailout money. This cause is by far more noble than any our government has thrown money at to date.

  11. GAWolf 04/16/2009 at 4:20 PM #

Ultimate is a club sport. Fowler can’t get his grubby hands on it. And there you have it…

  12. travelwolf 04/16/2009 at 4:29 PM #

if we REALLY want to get rid of fowler, start an anti-contribution campaign. That is, a campaign to STOP all athletic contributions to NC State. He’ll get fired in a few months, if not before. Nothing hits a school as hard as in the ‘wallet’.

Quit paying NC State. Stop donating until things change.

ESPN reported on the WBB news conference in Reynolds that James Oblinger said …. Nothing in this short article mentioned Lee Fowler. I wasn’t there but don’t you find it strange that Fowler was not mentioned at all?

  15. redfred2 04/16/2009 at 4:55 PM #

    Damn that frisbee stuff.

That is clear grounds for yet another extension, which added upon the existing one, could make Lee’s departure drag on forever. Oh well, if you’re NC State, you certainly wouldn’t want to rush into anything anyway. That is, with the exception of rushing to defend those who don’t deserve it, and of course rushing to hand out contract extensions for no particular reason.

Quit paying NC State. Stop donating until things change.

EXACTLY!! That’s what I’ve done accross the board! (But it will take a bunch of us.)

    And write the BOT:

Mr. D. McQueen Campbell, III, Chair
    1305 Cameron View Court
    Raleigh, NC 27607

AND I’d also like to state at this time that I support Kellie Harper 100% as NCSU WBB HC. I hold no ill feelings toward her personally as I think that she is a good hire for NCSU and will do well. BUT I will forever consider Foulup, Oblinger and the BOT members who supported this approach to filling the void in NCSU WBB left by the death Kay Yow to be a total disgrace to the university, Kay Yow’s memory and the Wolfpack Nation in general.

  17. grizzlyman 04/16/2009 at 6:07 PM #

It will take a unified effort to and public voice pointing out Fouler’s short comings. Maybe Tommy Burleson would take up that charge. I know he spoke out against HWSNBN near the end. Cutting the flow of money would be detrimental to the WPC and the NCSU AD, but how else do you make the point to the PTB that everyone in WolfPack Nation is tired of sucking? Everyone but them that is.

Video of the press conf is up at http://www.wralsportsfan.com/rs/video/4968173/
Fowler introduced Oblinger, and he said that Harper would be the only one answering questions today.

  19. old13 04/16/2009 at 6:52 PM #

Have you watched the Kellie Harper press conference? I must say that I was, first, very sickened at having to even see (I muted the audio) Foulup at the press conference, and, second, VERY impressed with Kellie Harper. She dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s regarding both Kay Yow and NCSU WBB, but with a passion that I felt was real. She, obviously, has a special feeling for her encounters with Kay Yow along the way and seems to really respect, and even embrace personally, the legacy of Kay. In any case, it appears to me that by both attitude and background, NCSU WBB is in good hands.

There was a thread started on PP that I believe was accidentally placed on the regular sports board…has since been moved to premium. However, it had an interesting quote from Fowler regarding wanting David Horning to replace him when he leaves but that he may not get it just because that’s what he asks for…I believe it was in response to a question about Yow wanting Glance to replace her. Anyone hear this quote today?

  21. highstick 04/16/2009 at 7:38 PM #

I may get trashed, but I’ve always been a Pat Summit fan. She may be a “hard arse”, but she wants to win!

Glad we’ve got our new women’s coach. Maybe Pat will come coach the men’s team?? She’d fix ole Lee! And she knows basketball!

  22. Pack Leader 04/16/2009 at 7:41 PM #

    Direct Quote from Lee Foulup-

“It’s a part of my job. We don’t get any wins, only losses. That’s one of those things about being an AD in this media savvy age with the Internet.”

Start the sob story and warm up the violins….
Its such a hard life for Ol’ Lee

  23. WolftownVA81 04/16/2009 at 7:49 PM #

What an outstanding press conference by Kellie Harper. Its very refreshing to see someone so passionate about what she does. She’s intelligent, articulent and will represent NCSU well. I like what I see so far. Lets hope she’s successful in bringing that passion to the court. I sense that she will bring a lot of attention to the women’s program.

  24. phillypacker 04/16/2009 at 8:29 PM #

“I’d love for David Horning to replace me when I leave here but I’m not sure you’ll get that because I ask for that… it’s always a feeling.” -Lee Fowler, April 16, 2009. Since Glance did not get the WBB job can we make sure that Hornung does not replace Jed? From everything I’ve heard, he would be a leap backward. I just hope that when Lee was talking about being replaced, he was talking about Friday.

  25. phillypacker 04/16/2009 at 8:30 PM #

I’m sure someone has to make this comparison first, but her fire, passion and love of winning, did remind me of V. She does seem very, very sharp.
