Top Basketball ADs and Boston College News

Here is a list of the “Top 10 Athletic Directors in Basketball”. Two ACC athletic directors made the list, but for some reason the author forgot to include Lee “I know basketball” Fowler. There is a suggestion on that site (not from us) for the author to come up with a list of the 10 worst Athletic Directors, so stay tuned.

I follow what happens at Boston College now that Tom O’Brien is our football coach and there have been some interesting occurrences that were worth discussing in relation to NC State.

After two straight appearances in the ACC title game, Boston College Athletic Director Gene Defilippo recently fired Jeff Jagodzinski for interviewing for the New York Jets’ head coaching position. That led to promoting long-time defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani which was not necessarily popular among BC faithful.

This week Boston College announced an extension through 2014 for Defilippo which was met with mixed reviews by BC fans. Here is some commentary from a BC blogger:

Personally I think the extension was premature. Gene is currently under contract until 2011. Was he going anywhere? Did we need to give him more money given the current ticket sales and donation challenges? Also, what happens if the Spaz decision proves to be a poor one? Gene will get much of the blame for that. If things don’t go well that means we could be buying out a football coach and AD.

If you remember way back to April of 2007, then our own Lee Fowler was granted an extension through 2013 with a basketball program and football program far less successful than either of the respective programs at Boston College.

Since Defilippo’s hiring in 1997, BC’s basketball program has been to at least 8 NCAA tournaments, won 3 regular season Big East titles, and won 1 Big East Tournament title. In the meantime, the football program has the 21st best overall winning percentage in the nation, 1 Big East title, 2 Atlantic Division titles, a tie for 1st place in the Atlantic Division, and has never finished lower than 2nd.

At the time of Fowler’s extension, NC State basketball program had been to 5 tournaments in 7 years, had won 0 ACC regular season titles and 0 ACC Tournament titles. In football, NC State only had the 46th best overall winning percentage, no conference titles, and no Atlantic Division titles. In fact, we had just gone 2-6 in the ACC and finished in last place in the Atlantic Division which was our worst overall season in about a half century.

So given these huge differences in terms of accomplishments (not counting BC’s two national titles in hockey, 2 runner-up finishes, and 2 other trips to the Frozen Four during Defilippo’s tenure), after a 3 year extension Defilippo is at BC currently with a 5 year contract. Compare that to Fowler who at the time received a 3 year extension from NC State giving him a 6 year contract.

I thought the differences in results for Defilippo and Fowler and the two extensions were worth noting and comparing. What criteria was used by NC State that led them to the offering of a longer extension for a far less successful employee? The BC blogger brought up some great questions and the point about having to buyout the contracts of two major employees at the same time can also be asked/applied to the situation surrounding Fowler’s extension as well.

Some more comments from the BC blogger:

During the Jags firing I found myself at the center of a lot of BC speculation, gossip and positioning. While it was clear Gene had Father Leahy’s ear and support, he is not universally loved and supported. There are many serious donors who have been turned off by him and who felt he mishandled the Jags firing and subsequent search. Some friends of Gene also wondered if the whole saga hadn’t taken a lot out of him and if he would hang it up before his contract ran out. This extension brings more clarity to all the speculation. Gene obviously still has enough support around BC to get this extension. And he seems like he wants to hang around BC for a few more years.

In news today that made the Boston Globe, the largest donor to the football program has resigned from the Board of Trustees.

The job may have gotten tougher with the resignation of Greg Barber, a member of the Board of Trustees.

Barber’s relationship with Boston College dates more than 40 years. His connection with BC athletics is not quite as long, but just as significant, highlighted by the Gregory P. Barber and Family Endowment for the Head Football Coach, a gift of $2.5 million, the largest contribution ever at The Heights. Add another $1 million gift for the construction of the Yawkey Athletic Center, and Barber, BC ’69, has made a significant financial contribution to his alma mater.

But last week, Barber quietly resigned from the 20-member board. He began contributing to the athletic program – primarily football – when Rev. J. Donald Monan, S.J., was the school’s president and Chet Gladchuk was the athletic director, which led to an endowment for the head football coach.

During the past few years, however, Barber has maintained a much lower profile. When asked yesterday why he was resigning, Barber said, “No comment.”

When asked if he intended to maintain the flow of contributions, now in the $4.5 million range, Barber said he had not made up his mind.

If Foulup’s extension was related to his faculty award, it’s all based on the (pardon the expression) new facilities, an achievement for which he takes full credit, but IMO one in which he had only a cursory involvement – Bobby got the donations, Amato got the ball rolling initially, Foulup underlings did the day-to-day oversight, etc. In any case, I vote for him as #1 in the listing of worst ADs.

Would #1 on the “Worst AD” list be the best AD among the worst 10 or the worst?

  3. BJD95 04/16/2009 at 11:37 AM #

Crazy Gene and Fowler have to be in the bottom ten.

  4. Daily Update 04/16/2009 at 11:53 AM #

BJD95: There have been some crazy stories of late about Defilippo, but is he really that bad of AD if the criteria is results on the field/court?

If there was a list of “Top Football ADs”, then he would be at worst 21st overall based on the program’s winning percentage. Then if you consider BC’s academic requirements, lack of great facilities and non-ideal geographic location, then he would probably be a lot higher than that.

Even the basketball program has been quite good.

I didn’t do the research, but Defilippo, A. Skinner, and TOB all arrived at BC about the same time. So Defilippo may have even hired Skinner, TOB, and Jags who have all be relatively successful.

So in the top three sports at BC, they have two time national title winner/top 10 program, a top 25 football program, and probably a top 30-35 basketball program.

I would take that in basketball, football, and baseball.

Would #1 on the “Worst AD” list be the best AD among the worst 10 or the worst?

I believe that by definition, #1 on any list would represent the most extreme of whatever measurement the list is rating. Therefore, #1 on a list of “bests” would be THE best; #1 on a list of “worsts” would be THE worst.

    inhoc,

As soon as we know anything, you’ll know everything we know.

I have a second “source”. This is a friend of a friend, so take that for what it’s worth (pretty much nothing). The details I have (again, take this with a grain of salt), is that Fowler is out, and they are negotiating the terms of his buyout. This could drag on into the summer. I don’t know if that means the ANNOUNCEMENT would have to wait that long, but I am preparing for the worst, that we won’t hear official word until it’s done.

This new source did not provide any details, but they also hinted at a second personnel change (without dropping any names). IMO, there’s a good chance they were talking about Sid. I suppose it could have been QJ, based on other talk I’ve heard about him. It may have even meant the new women’s bb coach. I really don’t know, but I suspect Sid (I don’t want Sid out at this time. I think if we were going to unload Sid, we should have done it the instant our bb season was over.)

I still believe Fowler will be gone shortly, though. I feel very good about that.

  9. Daily Update 04/16/2009 at 12:42 PM #

QJ was out last year. If Fowler is out, then any buyout due to his extension is precisely why I thought this news about BC and the blogger’s comments were worth discussing here. Similar situations potentially double buyout and all. Also, similar questions as to why an extension was offered to either AD. The only things that weren’t similar was the length of the extensions offered (one would think that Defilippo would have gotten the longer extension and not Fowler) and the results of the two athletic departments under their leadership.

    Meanwhile:

Kansas’ athletic director Lew Perkins could be in line for a $750,000 retention payment this summer, bringing the total amount of the payment to $2.05 million. The deal was struck after Perkins was courted in 2006 by Iowa. (via the Wiz of Odds)

^^ bradleyb123…I have heard that tomorrow is the day, too (Fowler is out). My source is a friend who’s father is pretty high ranking in the WPC, and I know those guys have an inner circle that chats.

For what its worth – this same friend gave me the heads up on Sendek about a week before he left for ASU, so I consider him credible.

Nothing’s certain until its ‘official’, however.

I have heard nothing regarding a second potential displacement (i.e. ANYone affiliated with the Men’s Basketball Program).

  12. rtpack24 04/16/2009 at 1:18 PM #

This list if flawed. Dick Baddour was on his way out due to Matt D. and numerous football snafus. Coach Smith is resposible for Roy being back in Chapel Hill and Baddour knows this and is very happy because it saved his job. Wellman is a super AD.

  13. howlie 04/16/2009 at 1:19 PM #

I guess I don’t understand “BASKETBALL A.D.” …. as if all the other parts of the job and all the other programs don’t matter [?].

Surely the UNCCH crowd would feel very ‘mixed’ about Baddour, but NO ONE at WFU would debate Wellman’s inclusion. He’s simply amazing.

  14. wufpup76 04/16/2009 at 1:22 PM #

^I agree rtpack … I believe Baddour had less to do with nabbing Williams the second time around than others did.

Edit: nm … basketball only list … durrr

bradley…you and I are hearing the same things.

  16. BJD95 04/16/2009 at 1:46 PM #

You can bet your ass that Dean Smith is almost solely responsible for Roy being back in Chapel Hill.

I still feel good about changes being made, but really have no idea re timing.

dont play with my emotions. I cant take a whole summer of speculation…..

If there’s any realistic hope that someone finally grew “nads”, I can wait….But please be right!!!

I might break out the champagne and I don’t even like the stuff!

  19. Alpha Wolf 04/16/2009 at 2:11 PM #

Who thinks we should all bring a suitcase to donate at the Spring Game?

  20. Packman02 04/16/2009 at 2:11 PM #

I want to believe the Fowler-is-GONE rumors as much as anyone but, one question (my apologies if this has already been discussed/debated)…

Doesn’t the timing of this move (if it, indeed, comes to pass) strike you all as strange – especially given the press conference today to introduce Kellie Harper?

    I mean, she’s Lee’s hire, right?

All thoughts on this are appreciated…

  21. Tampa-Pack 04/16/2009 at 2:16 PM #

I just wish it will happen, and the sooner the better. My F5 key cannot handle a long, drawn-out process.

If it’s relating to men’s basketball, could it be Monte taking the HC job at App. State?

  23. Tampa-Pack 04/16/2009 at 2:19 PM #

I know this would never happen, but wouldn’t it be great if they announced Lee’s firing at the Spring Game on the big screen? Talk about an ultimate Pep Rally for Pack fans!

I don’t know that that’s necessarily the case. If Foulup is “lame duck,” “others” (as was rumored about the CTC firing/TOB hiring) could have been involved or even done it entirely. I believe it was reported that there was a WBB “search committee.”

. . . wouldn’t it be great if they announced Lee’s firing at the Spring Game on the big screen?

    Tampa-Pack, that would be GREAT!

  25. choppack1 04/16/2009 at 2:27 PM #

    packman02 – That’s a fair point.

I guess that it’s possible that she could be both Lee’s hire and Lee could be out of here.

It’s very possible the PTB would let him feret out candidates and forward this person to them and give the green or red light.

And while Lee may not do smart things – he evidentyly knows who to please and how to please them to a certain extent. One of the things that those folks don’t do is sabotage their existing job – especially if they aren’t being terminated.
