Sources: Tim Floyd to Arizona & more dominoes could fall

The landscape of the Pac-10 continues to transform as 2009’s coaching carousel continues with this somewhat surprising move – Tim Floyd to Arizona

After unsuccessfully trying to woo Rick Pitino and reportedly going after Mark Few and Jeff Capel, Arizona is set to name Tim Floyd as its new head coach according to reports.

Fox Sports reports that Floyd is still weighing the offer.

Floyd, 55, has spent the last four seasons at USC and is 85-50 in his tenure in Southern California. He led the Trojans to three NCAA tournament appearances — including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2007.

According to a source close to the situation, Floyd — as of Wednesday night — is still deliberating on whether to accept Arizona’s offer.

Floyd’s Trojans won the 2009 Pac-10 Conference Tournament Championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament by overcoming a 15 point deficit to Arizona State. The Sun Devils and All-American guard James Harden only scored six points in the last eight minutes and ten seconds of the game en route to mustering only 63 points for the day. They scored only four points in the last 7:37, which included only one field goal in the last 7:37. The Trojans took the lead with about 30 seconds to go in the game and continued to ride their momentum into the NCAA Tournament.

I thought USC was able to pull a surprisingly good move in their initial hire of Floyd four years ago, so it will be interesting to see where the Trojans choose to turn. Jobs at Georgia and Memphis also remain open.

As Andy Katz discusses in the above video, Floyd’s move could open the door for the dominoes to fall in a manner that sends Pitt’s Jamie Dixon to USC, opening the Pitt job for Sean Miller. First, such a move would suck for NC State as Sean Miller is clearly emerging as a top candidate for our job in the next couple of years if Coach Lowe were to unfortunately not show some improvement.

Excuse me while I continue to be baffled by these reporters. Katz, like Seth Davis and Greg Doyel and so many others, is usually fast to tout the attributes of former NC State coach, Herb Sendek. In this report he immediately mentions Miller and totally ignores Sendek as a candidate for Pitt. Hell…Miller coached for Sendek, who is also originally from Pittsburgh!

Sendek was (supposedly) the subject of speculation around the Pitt job when Ben Howland left for UCLA. Although the speculation was later proven to be a manufactured and appear to be an opportunistic PR stunt by Camp Fowler/Sendek to make Herb appear desired by other programs, it still baffles me that Herb could be such an amazing coach yet these media-guys who love him so much never even think of him as a potential candidate for any of these jobs where is obviously a natural fit. I wonder why that is?

“At the risk of sounding like Trout and Tim Floyd”

Hey, I resemble that remark! 🙂

That time – March/April 1996 – was a convergence of sorts for me. I was in grad school, had already accepted a job, it was the end of the quarter, start of new quarter at UGA, so I had time on my hands. Wolfchat was the new thing, evolving from the InfoPack, and I spent a lot of time on it! I thought, and still do, that Tim Floyd was an excellent coach, having tutored under Don Haskins and won at New Orleans and Iowa State. If you win at Iowa State, you can win anywhere.

Todd Turner had his faults, but he did have a decent Plan B. If my memory is correct, Kelvin Sampson was our top choice, we ended up with Herb Sendek. Don’t know if Tim Floyd was ever contacted, but I did everything I could to promote his candidacy!

    Tim Floyd is Da Man!

There’s your stroll down memory lane.

  2. BillyTheKid 04/02/2009 at 12:44 PM #

I remember wanting Kelvin Sampson to come here in 1996, man that doesn’t look like too hot of an idea now!!

Back in the Day I never saw Tim Floyd mentioned for the opening when Robinson left.

IIRC the candidates posted in the Technician that State was interested in were Sendek, Calhoun, Donovan, and Sampson.

Turner went with the safe hire in Herb. Not really sure we would have gotten nor wanted Calhoun. Thank God we did not get Sampson.

It would have been nice to get Donovan at the time when he was coaching at Marshall. But Turner went with Sendek.

Tim Floyd was available when Herb left. Also had a shot at Mike Montgomery now at Cal who has ties to Les.

We never seem to catch a break during coaching searches no matter what. So even if Sid does leave I am fearfull of who we’d bring in! Bobby Lutz!?!

On a semi-separate note, I was watching Sportscenter at the gym this morning and they had a live interview with John Calipari. In it, he said something that basically summed up the basketball coach search in 2006 and the crux of where we as a fanbase have been for the last 15 years:

“Coaches win basketball games. Administrations win championships.”

I hope we can find that quote online somewhere.

“the landscape of college basketball and the amount of money available to NC State is very different from when Willis Casey hired Jimmy V from Iona.”
    `
If Willis Casey hadn’t pulled a “Lee Fowler” and let Sloan go to Florida, we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in today. Are you sure about the “package on the table”? TOB can earn $1.85 million if “he wins the national championship'” Big bucks to new hires can cause internal problems when the newbies make more than the older employees.

You know I wonder if he, Sendek, tells Sundevil fans that the Arizona game is “just another” game on the schedule. . . I wonder if he still has no respect of classic rivalry games out there, and how their fanbase likes it.

  7. buttPACKer 04/02/2009 at 12:51 PM #

    greywolf,

you can bet that TOB will get a raise this year.

Thanks for the reply Daily and SFN

I guess I’m more like Noah,in that I dont read the articles re: Herb anymore. I really dont care what writers like Doyel,Jones ,Davis etc. say about NCState and I’m certainly not naive to think that a blog about NCState refutes their writings on a national perspective.

No matter what is written here or how many times its written, the thinking nationally is/was that Herb got a raw deal from the fanbase at NCState. I cant change that perception, so I move on to the present and future.

Yes, I think Sid will get 2 more years. He will get a chance to coach a team of Brown,Howell,Harrow,TSmith,Wood,Williams,Mays,Javi,Thomas,CJ Leslie(hopefully) and a few others.

    If that squad tanks, later

I believe based on our fans, history, conference, scheduling opportunities, location, etc we are in the top 25% or better of D1 destinations.

I moved to Raleigh in 1984, while in the fifth grade. I vaguely remember NCSU being good for a couple of years and then running into scandals.

The best NCSU has ever been in my lifetime, while an NCSU fan, was the last five years Herb coached here.

I wasn’t born when the 1974 championship was won. I wasn’t in the area and not following college sports, other than college football, in 1983.

My living memory of NCSU as being successful consists of the 1987 ACC title, the year they finished first during the regular season, only to be destroyed by 8th seeded Maryland and then a bunch of scandals and Valvano being dismissed.

I’m in my mid-thirties and I haven’t experienced a lot of successful history about NCSU, either as a fan or as someone in the Raleigh area.

I have no clue what teenagers are thinking about us. I somehow doubt dragging up stuff that happened a decade before they were born, i.e. the 1983 title, will have an impact.

And yes, the kids we’re recruiting are all born post-1990. This years seniors were mostly born in 1991. 2010’s were born in 1992 and so on.

This history thing, which some fans are so proud of, will soon become irrelevant unless there’s some new history made. Our program needs to do something memorable soon or we’ll be like Duke trying to sell the 1942 Rose Bowl appearance played in Durham, as the high water mark of the program.

I really think the whole history of Wolfpack basketball has some value, but it diminishes as time goes on.

If Willis Casey hadn’t pulled a “Lee Fowler” and let Sloan go to Florida, we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in today.

Sloan got into a mess at Florida in the late 1980’s, as well. I think he was paying some of his players or something like that.

It would have been nice to get Donovan at the time when he was coaching at Marshall. But Turner went with Sendek.

Not sure why we went with Sendek over Donovan. At the time Sendek did have a better record as a head coach.

  11. Greywolf 04/02/2009 at 1:12 PM #

“Coaches win basketball games. Administrations win championships.” quote from noted philosopher, John Calipari. Where do the players figure in, John?

  12. Trout 04/02/2009 at 1:15 PM #

“IIRC the candidates posted in the Technician that State was interested in were Sendek, Calhoun, Donovan, and Sampson.”

Billy Donovan was never really an option. Les resigned on March 22, 1996. Donovan was announced as Florida’s head coach on March 27, 1996. Herb was introduced as our coach on April 17, 1996.

  13. Sweet jumper 04/02/2009 at 1:16 PM #

I think that coaches help players win basketball games is more accurate than Calimari’s sound byte.

  14. Wolf Dog 04/02/2009 at 1:20 PM #

Wow. Floyd has to be an idiot to take that job. Has he not read about the great Herb Sendek at his cross state rival ASU? He really cannot expect to out recruit, beat ASU, or win any Pac – 10 Championships with the great Herb Sendek right down the road.

Did Floyd not talk to Gary Williams, Coach K, or Roy about how hard it is to compete against such a great coach and media darling?

I can only suspect that Floyd is expecting Herb to leave for a bigger and better job soon or he never would have taken the job!

I “wrote” a new song for the Final Four

We’re the Green and White from State

And we know we are the best

Hands behind our backs we will take on all the rest

    Go to hell Carolina!

Michigan and Ohio State stand in line!

The Green and White from Michigan State!

    GO STATE!

  16. Noah 04/02/2009 at 1:24 PM #

I remember Bob Bender and Rick Stansbury being interviewed before we hired Sendek. I don’t remember the others being mentioned.

  17. buttPACKer 04/02/2009 at 1:28 PM #

    Gene,

you are. . . absolutely right!

Our history is quickly disappearing in the rearview. We’ve got to do something here soon (b/c i’m really tired of hearing about 1983)… I do like hearing about the 1974 squad though–they were truly legendary.

  18. Rick 04/02/2009 at 1:29 PM #

“Herb probably has such a great relationship with the media because of his straight-forward, to-the-point, no-nonsense responses to their questions.”

    Thats funny right there

  19. buttPACKer 04/02/2009 at 1:30 PM #

    that’s nice, Alpha. . . very catchy.

LOL, I always thought he was their sinsei at the dojo.

Bubba, I wouldn’t underestimate the importance of this blog’s voice in representing the intelligent portion of the NC State fanbase. SFN itself doesn’t, but you can guarantee that certain individual’s who read it DO reach a national audience.

  22. com state10 04/02/2009 at 1:42 PM #

I don’t think you can let the past successes here blind us of the current state of affairs.

With the state of the program the way it is, we will not be able to attract and hire an established coach that some think we deserve. Until things are different, we’ll never land a big name coach like Roy coming from Kansas, Calipari coming from Memphis, or even Barnes from Texas.

We are like a young company in my mind, we will constantly have to gamble a little bit when it comes to coaches, until one of those gambles pays off, and we are returned to prominence. We’ll have to continue to take shots at risky unproven plays like Sid, or up and comers from mid-majors.

Therefore, Miller absolutely can not be a floor.

Tournaments like this one, I think make me realize I am way to ACC-focused. This conference isn’t as great as people think it is, and the argument that State is an opportunity to coach in a great conference was a little cocky on MY part.

  23. LKNpackfan 04/02/2009 at 1:42 PM #

    Nice Alpha. I revised it a little…

We’re the Green and White from State
And we know we are the best
Keeping Izzo in Lansing will really be a test
    Go to hell Carolina!
No seriously, go to hell Carolina!
The Green and White from Michigan State!

    GO STATE!

  24. buttPACKer 04/02/2009 at 1:47 PM #

    Sorry, Alpha, but I like LKNpackfan’s version better. . . 🙂

  25. old13 04/02/2009 at 1:48 PM #

Yes, Wolfpack BB history has become much like Duke FB history. (For you youngsters, Duke was once a powerhouse in FB until the early 60s. In fact, they played in the Rose Bowl during WW II, which was held in Durham for that game because of fears of attacks on the west coast.)
