Miller changes his mind and accepts Arizona job?(updated 1:25pm)

Miller changes his mind.
(4/6/2009 1:05 PM Update)

One of the ideal fits to potentially become NC State’s head basketball coach if Coach Lowe were to head back to the NBA or not get the job done next season may be off the market. It appears Sean Miller has changed his mind and may in fact accept the Arizona position over a weekend when Lee “I have a contract and I know basketball” Fowler was not attending the Final Four in Detroit.

Sean Miller accepted the job as head coach of the Arizona Wildcats on Monday, one day after turning the position down, a source close to the negotiations told Yahoo! Sports.

Miller told Arizona he would remain at Xavier late last night, then asked for a chance to sleep on the decision. After going back and forth during the morning, a source said, he informed XU athletic director Mike Bobinski of his decision at noon ET.

MILLER EXPECTED TO SPURN ARIZONA (April 6, 2009 @ 12:40am)
I am the type of person who likes to have every possible option open to him when/if a decision needs to be made. If Coach Lowe struggles next season and it just so happens that the Wolfpack is in the market for a new basketball coach, I can’t help but proclaim that this is fantastic news knowing how highly Sean regards our job.

Sean Miller is expected to be the latest to spurn Arizona.

According to sources close to the situation, the Xavier head coach met with Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood in New Mexico earlier today and has decided that – barring a last-minute change of heart – he will remain with the Musketeers.

Miller, 40, has spent the last five seasons as the head coach of the Musketeers and has made four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances – including an Elite Eight last season and a Sweet 16 this past year.

Miller joins USC’s Tim Floyd to meet with Livengood in the past few days and turn down what was once considered an elite program.

Livengood was also unsuccessful luring big names such as Pittsburgh’s Jamie Dixon and Gonzaga’s Mark Few.

Miller makes approximately $800,000 at Xavier and, according to sources, was offered more than $2 million a year in Tucson.

Now the Wildcats will need to find someone willing to take the job. According to sources, Utah’s Jim Boylen might be next in line.

SOURCES: ARIZONA TARGETS MILLER (April 4, 2009 @ 11:56am)

This story is worth following for a lot of reasons. There is a lot of Miller-related commentary in this discussion from a couple of days ago.

Arizona has zeroed in on Sean Miller.

This link has more:

What does make sense is Arizona’s newest target: Sean Miller.

While it may not appear to fit, he’s the ideal choice. In fact, long-term it could

Here’s why:

1) He’s 40 years old and could see the long-term picture for rebuilding in Tucson. A guy like Tim Floyd doesn’t want to get his head beaten in for two years at this stage of his career. Miller would be more apt to deal with that given that he could vie for Final Fours and maybe a national title somewhere down the line. Miller isn’t a stop-gap like some of the previous candidates (Floyd, Tubby Smith).

2) Miller can recruit. He’s a grinder who can evaluate talent (see: Derrick Brown, B.J. Raymond, etc.) and connects well with kids.

3) He can coach. Four straight NCAA tournament appearances – including a Sweet 16 this season with an unenviable point guard situation.

4) He would go toe-to-toe and wouldn’t be intimidated by any of the big boys out west – and in particular, UCLA’s Ben Howland.

Miller played at Pittsburgh and hasn’t coached anywhere out west, but he’d need to hire the right staff to get it done in Tucson. Obviously, bringing on now-Kentucky assistant Josh Pastner as his associate head coach would be huge (Pastner works for one of Miller’s closest friends, John Calipari).

Miller still hasn’t decided whether he’s going to meet with Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood, but sources indicate he’s strongly considering it.

This search still has some ground to make up if it wants to set the “gold standard.” I haven’t yet heard Lavin’s name mentioned, or for that matter any other TV personalities for that matter. Maybe they are waiting to ask Clark Kellogg after he is done with his final four duties this evening, but probably not.

Does AZ have a bigger idiot running their program than we do?

They are kind of a one-trick pony. Sort of like Memphis, they will naturally sink back down without Olson running things.

While Tuscon is a cool city, I don’t ever see them being a destination gig.

^ Why the negative perception of AZ?

At NC State, you have Ryan Kelly and John Wall who were McD AA equivalents within a few miles of our campus.

Yeah, but how many of those guys come to play at NCSU? No super star Raleigh recruits landed here in as long as I can remember. Mike Bell was probably the best Raleigh player we recruited in the past 20 years. Nate McMillan by way of JUCO was probably the best over all in the program.

It’s hard to believe Arizona can go from THE perennial PAC-10 program to nowhere in three years. It appears to me that Arizona is going to have to use a re-tread (Lavin or Knight or Nolan Richardson) just to stem the tide until another young coach looks to take it over (Stevens or Grant). One interesting thing, maybe Georgia getting Mark Fox trumped Arizona, you have to think that the Nevada head coach has Tucson on his mind in some capacity.

Arizona is going to go through what any program losing a legendary coach goes through. They will struggle for a while. The question is whether they will ever get it back. If Arizona is anything like NC State, they’re program is dead.

  7. Daily Update 04/06/2009 at 9:08 AM #

Gene: NC State hasn’t given guys like that a reason to come to NC State in the last 20 years. Even if we miss on Wall and Kelly, then there are still more division 1 players in the state of NC than there are in Arizona. Not to mention that Atlanta, DC, Baltimore, and even NYC are closer or about the same distance as Arizona’s best location for recruits(southern California).

Look at all the kids from NC that are heading to division 1 programs this year. Wake, Auburn, and Miami all have guys from NC in next year’s class and they didn’t get Wall or Kelly either. Dallas is about twice as far from Tucson as NYC is to Raleigh.

Even Miami is closer to Raleigh than Dallas is to Tuscon by about 150 miles. Yes, I know there are more schools on the East Coast, but once you get to the point where you are a plane trip from home then distance becomes less and less relevant. Every kid Arizona recruits is a plane trip from home, so your competition for recruits is essentially everyone and at the same time the local programs where (Texas, Oklahoma, Washington, UCLA, USC, Cal) have a huge advantage over you because the distances are driveable.

Why the negative perception of AZ?

Because outside of what Lute Olson (one of the best coaches ever) accomplished, it’s been pretty much devoid of history.

“Is Sid at the final four or is he in Raleigh?”

I don’t know. I thought I saw him (or someone resembling him) driving a really nice Mercedes with an NCState license plate near Brier Creek on Friday.

I thought all or most coaches went to the Final Four? Seems like he should be there. If not, why?

Currently, I think we are in the worst position for a real fan to be in:

On the horizon, we have a potential, up-and-coming, program changing coach…who by most accounts, values the job…

Yet we want to be successful next year, make the NCAA tournament, and enhance our 2010, 2011, etc recruiting class…

On one hand we have to LOSE in order to possibly WIN this young, up-and-coming coach…

On the other, if we WIN next year then there’s almost a guaranteed certainty that we will LOSE out on this opportunity…and whose to say that winning wouldn’t be a sign to come? or just a random one year occurrence?…

As a fan…I want us to win next year, I’m not talking about a National Title or an Undefeated Season…but a nationally respected, winning record and a shot to compete in the NCAAs…Yet, I fear that winning could be one or two year anomaly, lead to us retaining our current coach…and us missing out on the coach that we may want/need…

What is a Fan to do!?

Someone else thought they saw him at the Canes game over the weekend. Being in Detroit is a networking opportunity for sure, but does it really matter if he is or isn’t there?

I thought all or most coaches went to the Final Four? Seems like he should be there. If not, why?

It is extremely unusual for a coach or an AD not to be there.

  16. jbpackfan 04/06/2009 at 10:04 AM #

I’ve seen where people have mentioned that Lowe has put out feelers to the NBA the past couple seasons. My question is do any of you know if he enjoys coaching in college and wants to be here?

  17. ThomYorkepack 04/06/2009 at 10:17 AM #

I’m sure he wants to be here if he thinks he can win before he gets fired. Whether he can or not is an open question…he may already have run out of time.

  18. packbackr04 04/06/2009 at 10:20 AM #

the golf is better in raleigh right now…. forget the final 4, there is no reason other than that to go to Detroit for sid. everybody just relax, Sid and Lee are in TOTAL control of the situation. look at our latest recruit. an under-recruited 1 star player from Athens drive. NCSU bball is going to be solid with players like that next year.

all is can picture is Kevin Bacon in Animal House screaming “remain calm! all is well!” while he gets trampled by the masses

Listening to a lot of sports radio on Friday, I heard the guys on 610 interview Hewitt and Purnell at the Final 4. I do think most college coaches are there.

Regarding the Arizona search, I’d actually tell you that I think this search is a bigger joke than ours. Face it, this AD has known that he’d probably need a coach BEFORE THIS SEASON EVER BEGAN. There is absolutely no excuse for him to be turned by 3 coaches and counting thus far. Of course, it doesn’t really reach the heights of the stupidity of ours unless he hires Steve Kerr. (And that’s assuming that Kerr has no degree and no college coaching experience.)

  20. LKNpackfan 04/06/2009 at 10:24 AM #

If there’s risk of employment separation than you keep your options open.
I’m taking the position that whether or not he likes his current job is a separate issue.

  21. Tampa-Pack 04/06/2009 at 10:25 AM #

I also asked this as well on the Fowler thread from Friday, but if Lee and Lowe are in Raleigh, is anyone representing the university in Detroit? That could be a huge clue of things to come.

I know as State fans we just aren’t this lucky, but we can dream right? Maybe someone representing NC State has word to Miller to not talk to AZ, and all this will come out in the next week or so… Okay, I’ll stop torturing myself now, and get back to work.

  22. packbackr04 04/06/2009 at 11:01 AM #

I had heard initially that TOB had called Miller and asked him to hold off on AZ while NCSU got their mess together. im not sure why TOB would be making that call, unless he is the most visible person from our athletic dept who will be employed as such for more than a few weeks. i dont know if i believe that rumor, just passing it on. has anyone else heard this?

  23. jbpackfan 04/06/2009 at 11:05 AM #

Someone posted that in a comment Friday. I’d be shocked if it were true, but this whole situation is kind of strange.

  24. Tampa-Pack 04/06/2009 at 11:21 AM #

TOB – savior of the football program, and NC State athletics in general?!? Amazing if true.

“Carolina just won the national title. Bastards.”
    `
Noah, that’s what they said about Houston in ’83 before Houston played another “State.” I hesitate to jinx “State” by pulling for them, but it ain’t over til it’s over. Hanjive has been getting fouls called against him and the shooting touch isn’t what I’ve seen from the Holes. They looked mortal at the foul line.
    `
    I can dream, can’t I?
