Pack Signs Aussie Center

vandenbergI have been waiting for a news article on Jordan Vandenberg to link to, but it doesn’t seem forthcoming. So, here’s a link to The Wolfpacker, with very little information.

My take is that Vandenberg is a 7-foot center project. However, that is not a criticism. He’s not a bad fallback option when you miss on elite lowpost prospects. And unlike Josh Davis, he did have an offer from another major program (USC), and another legitimate mid-major program (Nevada). So it doesn’t require blind faith – which obviously, Lowe and company haven’t shown they deserve – to have some cautious optimism.

Vandenberg’s role in 2009-10 should be extremely limited, but it does give NC State a 4th lowpost option for whenever two of Smith, Howell, and Horner get in foul trouble. I can’t imagine he’ll contribute much when he’s in the game as a freshman, but his height alone makes that preferable to, say, Johnny Thomas at the 4 while Horner plays center.

As a junior and senior, Vandenberg’s ceiling is probably that of a very useful player from a similar background – Georgia Tech’s Luke Schenscher.

Here’s a quote from Noah on another thread, which I agree with 100%:

I don’t mind taking a flyer on a seven footer (who doesn’t have arthritic knees and a heart condition). It’s guys like Davis or 6-0 unranked point guards that I question this late in the season.

We could have had Chris Warren. Lowe went and scouted him and then decided that Javi Gonzalez was the better of the two players.

For the most part, I don’t follow recruiting that closely until after a kid committs to State. But according to scout.com, the timeline for Warren went like this:

    Oct 20, 2006 – Visited State
    Oct 28, 2006 – Visited Ole Miss
Nov 8, 2006 – Committed to Ole Miss

So to be clear, you are saying that Lowe was scouting Gonzalez in Oct 2006?

  2. Bubba 04/29/2009 at 5:02 PM #

No we didnt start recruiting Javi until late Feb 07. This was long after Mays commit and long after Johnson transfered in.

  3. Keg Man 04/29/2009 at 6:21 PM #

Bubba let them post, its an avenue to vent frustrations. Although I agree Sid and Towe going nowhere soon.

I am looking forward to the season. Agreed with previous person. ACC is wide open we got as good a chance at finishing .500 or above as most.

  4. Noah 04/29/2009 at 6:55 PM #

No we didnt start recruiting Javi until late Feb 07

They scouted Warren and Gonzalez on consecutive nights.

  5. Noah 04/29/2009 at 6:56 PM #

NCState will not fire Sidney Lowe and Monte Towe after 4 years of rebuilding, Not gonna happen. If it helps you to sit around, think and post otherwise, please continue to have at it.

Wins and losses and rebuilding probably won’t have a thing to do with it.

  6. Keg Man 04/29/2009 at 7:18 PM #

Seriuosly. lots of good points on here but as of now Sid is the coach and no signs of anyone even thinking about letting him go and it will take a disasterous season and a major push next year to even get the administration to think about letting him go. So for now sitting around talking about it is a waste.

Just my 2 cents as the Keg Man!

Which of these statements is correct?

“he did have an offer from another major program (USC), and another legitimate mid-major program (Nevada)” from Pack Signs Aussie Center posted here.

Both are accurate statements. All the schools you listed have been mentioned in different articles. The Aussie Sports Institute has info and ESPN just rated him. Go to Wolfpack Hoops, Pack Pride, and The Wolfpacker for more articles.

I heard Big Ben, Julius Mayes, CJ Williams, and Johnny Thomas all received the Scholar Athlete Award for achieving a GPA of 3.0 or higher this past semester.

Surely this can be considered a feather in Sid’s cap?

I’m content with Lowe. He’s not a bad guy. But I say he gets THIS year to show some tangible improvement or it will be time to move on to someone else. Not that the powers that be care one iota what I think. 😉

did anyone happen to make it out to apex high to watch the local highschool dunk contest?? i know josh davis and ernast ross and garrius adams was there…. just curious if anyone saw it in person

  11. statered 04/30/2009 at 7:35 AM #

^I talked to a buddy that went (I live in Apex). He said Davis was suprisingly athletic and looked like could still grow some. Said he was long. I know Noah is busting on Davis but if you are going to offer up a scholly in this way thank god it is to a more athletic type instead of to a Justin Flatt, Rouldra Thomas, or Mike O’Donnell. For all of Herb’s “brains” he had a far worse record of throwing away scholarships and not spacing things than Lowe has and he had college coaching experience. Hell look at what he would have had here in year 10?!?!?! And look what he will have this year at ASU. I guess that school in Pittsburg ain’t so great after all.

  12. Pack Leader 04/30/2009 at 7:47 AM #

i agree 100% Statered!! I watched the video of his dunks on wolfpackhoops and he seems to have good hops and athleticism. If we are going to get an unranked unknown player, i want it to be an athletic, strong individual that has i character and is a huge state fan. we can keep naming the players who transfered because of not being able to deal with herb so we wont get into that…
I wonder how he stacked up to the other cometition. I heard he got second but that doesnt always mean he was 2nd best….

  13. Noah 04/30/2009 at 7:53 AM #

I know Noah is busting on Davis but…

All I’ve done is repeat what a couple of other people have told me. I’ve never seen him play. (thought I had said that, but apparently not)

  14. Bubba 04/30/2009 at 8:06 AM #

“They scouted Warren and Gonzalez on consecutive nights.”

Dang Noah, you are just making stuff up now.Doesn’t enhance your position at all.

“NCState went to Miami Feb 10th and was upset by the Hurricanes 80-65,but the trip was not a fruitless one…..Monte Towe had a chance to talk with an old friend,AAUcoach Art Alvarez……Towe told Alvarez that NCState was intent on signing a point guard to complete the 07-08 roster. Alvarez reponded that he has one for him–Javi Gonzalez. Four days later Towe was back in Miami to catch his first glimpse of Gonzalez who responded with 26 points on 9-14 shooting, grabbed 8 rebounds and had 4 steals.”

Sid first saw Javi in the state final on Feb 24th and offered the schollie

Are you perhaps confusing Javi with Jai Lucas? we looked at them at near the same time frame.

Here’s some vids of Josh’s Dunks from last night for Wolfpack Hoops:

    http://wolfpackhoops.blogspot.com/

Here is an old dunk vid from Johnny’s Senior year.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke4xueN3GdY

They are definately comparable. I think Josh has a bit more length than Johnny did at the time, I think that would still be the case. But it looks like Johnny owns the head-to-head bounce factor.

  16. statered 04/30/2009 at 8:43 AM #

Noah – I understand that. My point is that whether you think offering Davis is OK or awful depends upon your standard. My standard is what NCSU has done over the last 15-20 years. By that standard Davis is a pretty good pick up for a “throw away” scholly because he is clearly more athletic than any of the folks we did this with in the past. He may not have the skill set of a Justin Flatt but he is athletic enough that if he develops it he could play and be productive. Let’s put it this way – he has a better chance to be legit than Fergie (not saying much there).

Now if your standard is a national championship contending program is becomes more questionable and I can see your point. Typically when these programs give out a ‘throw away” scholly it is for potential but to a higher ranked player that just wants to be at a winner program. But we are no where near that level.

In short – Sid’s “screw up” with this scholly is far better than some in the past were in my eyes and Sid is not considered some brainiac genius like folks want to consider the former guy.

Ryan Harrow has been re-evaluated and is a top 50, four-star player now. Sid got in early. I believe he’s a good evaluator of talent. And when we had a healthy Engin Atsur, Sid did a pretty good job coaching.

Don’t get me wrong, Sid still has plenty to prove, and not much time left to do it. But why don’t we all just get behind him and see how 2009-10 plays out for us?

  18. frankiepack 05/01/2009 at 3:14 PM #

Because we have been behind him and nothing is happening

  19. bradleyb123 05/01/2009 at 6:28 PM #

Because we have been behind him and nothing is happening

How can you say that? It took Sid a while to get the ball rolling on recruiting, but he’s doing pretty well in that regard now. Of course there are things to criticize, but I did see improvement on the court in 08/09, even if our record didn’t reflect that. And I expect a pretty good improvement in 09/10 (but I may be one of the few that thinks that). I just think the ACC will be down from this year a little, and with our recruits, we have a chance to take a few steps forward. As long as we’re building something, I’m happy. You don’t go from the worst to the best overnight. At some point, you have to build some momentum, and I think this year could be the year that we turn the corner a bit. The year after that a little more, and so on.

But I wouldn’t go as far as to say nothing is happening. Just my opinion.

  20. ktoh 05/02/2009 at 10:16 AM #

oh so this garbage goes on another 10 years??

  21. bradleyb123 05/03/2009 at 8:52 PM #

oh so this garbage goes on another 10 years??

    I didn’t say that.

But we also can’t expect to go from where we are now to top-10 overnight, either (not without hiring a major, PROVEN head coach, like a Roy Williams or a Coach K anyway). Positive momentum will lead to better and better recruiting classes. Success breeds success. We already have a top-20 class coming in, and a good start on the next class after that. Now with some positive results, hopefully the ball continues rolling until we’re where we want to be.

I think Sidney took a while to get going, and I understand people wanting much more and wanting it YESTERDAY. But to let Sid go just when we may be building some momentum would be a big mistake.

I do wonder if all the unnecessary negativity on these blogs (all of them, not picking on SFN in particular) is only hurting us. By unnecessary negativity, I mean people just pouting nonstop about Sidney when he WILL be here next year. Come January, if it’s just more of the same, THEN let’s roll out the negativity and try to get him replaced. I think State’s basketball team could do something THIS year (show some real improvement), and if we don’t, I agree it’s time to end the Sidney experiment. But while we’re still in the middle of it, let’s give it the best chance for success that we can. I’m just afraid the negative comments could end up hurting recruiting in some way. And why risk that when Sid’s going to be here next year no matter what anyway?

  22. VaWolf82 05/03/2009 at 9:05 PM #

We already have a top-20 class coming in, and a good start on the next class after that. Now with some positive results, hopefully the ball continues rolling

You have a strange definition for “good start” with one of two verbals already backing out. The other thing you seem to forget is that the only results most of the next class will see before they make a decision is last season.

  23. bradleyb123 05/04/2009 at 8:55 AM #

You have a strange definition for “good start” with one of two verbals already backing out

And who is the one that DIDN’T back out? The one that backed out is a kid that verballed as a freshman. So he decided that maybe he jumped the gun? That’s completely understandable, and none of us knows what went into his decision to re-open his recruiting. Maybe it’s because we’re not a great team. But when he originally verballed, we weren’t a great team by any stretch of the imagination. And we are still on his list.

And lord help us if kids like him or his parents are reading these boards. That’s all I’m saying here. Like it or not, Sid DOES have one more year to show he has righted the ship. He isn’t going anywhere. Save all the negative energy for January/February if there is no improvement. Being negative on Sid NOW doesn’t help anything. Nothing at all. If anything, it only hinders.

I don’t think Sidney is the next John Wooden, but come on. He deserves at least THIS year to show some improvement. Let’s support him until we reach the point in the 09/10 season that it is obvious that there is no improvement.

  24. bradleyb123 05/04/2009 at 9:00 AM #

I just think there is FINALLY a little momentum with the program. If we were to rip Sidney out now, and replace him, we’d likely be in the same boat we are now, just hoping for something better. (Unless we’re going to shell out the big bucks for a truly BIG-TIME coach, like a Roy Williams or a Coach K, which we certainly are not going to do. We haven’t done that in the 100 or so years we’ve had a basketball team. Why would we start NOW?)

I say we see if this momentum turns into more momentum. Success breeds success. We have some great players coming in, and think about how many great players don’t even look at us because we’ve been so bad for so long? Once we start having some success (maybe this year?) we’ll get even more looks from the great players.

If we give up on Sidney now, we lose any momentum we had. And this treatment of a new coach still in his “honeymoon” period would make it that much harder to replace him with a good coach.

I’m hoping after this year, we won’t have to.

  25. VaWolf82 05/04/2009 at 10:01 AM #

I don’t know who you are addressing, but no where did I say anything about removing Lowe. I want Sid to succeed…heck, I wish Herb had succeeded. But what I wish for has no effect on reality.

The “momentum” you speak of may or may not exist. Personally, it doesn’t look State has any to speak of….but we will see when the 2010 class is finalized.
