Pack Signs Aussie Center

vandenbergI have been waiting for a news article on Jordan Vandenberg to link to, but it doesn’t seem forthcoming. So, here’s a link to The Wolfpacker, with very little information.

My take is that Vandenberg is a 7-foot center project. However, that is not a criticism. He’s not a bad fallback option when you miss on elite lowpost prospects. And unlike Josh Davis, he did have an offer from another major program (USC), and another legitimate mid-major program (Nevada). So it doesn’t require blind faith – which obviously, Lowe and company haven’t shown they deserve – to have some cautious optimism.

Vandenberg’s role in 2009-10 should be extremely limited, but it does give NC State a 4th lowpost option for whenever two of Smith, Howell, and Horner get in foul trouble. I can’t imagine he’ll contribute much when he’s in the game as a freshman, but his height alone makes that preferable to, say, Johnny Thomas at the 4 while Horner plays center.

As a junior and senior, Vandenberg’s ceiling is probably that of a very useful player from a similar background – Georgia Tech’s Luke Schenscher.

Here’s a quote from Noah on another thread, which I agree with 100%:

I don’t mind taking a flyer on a seven footer (who doesn’t have arthritic knees and a heart condition). It’s guys like Davis or 6-0 unranked point guards that I question this late in the season.

A quick note to many of you — rtpack has a long standing, extremely credible reputation whose sources & insight have proven to be correct and we consider to be a tremendous value to our community.

We are going to ask that (many of) you take note of our appreciation and respect for what he chooses to share and maybe you will do yourself a favor and recognize that it would be worth your while to add extra credence to things that he chooses to share.

Sometimes, you just have to take our word for it.

I don’t think you realize often people on this site say this.

I really enjoy reading this site and picking up stuff I’d otherwise never hear. Jordan Vandenberg and possibly Josh Davis may turn out to be pretty good players, even by ACC standards. However, we still have the same coaching staff we had last season and the one before that and the one before that. In my opinion it’s going to be a different cast of characters but the same old story. NC State is never going to be good again until we get a new coaching staff that knows what they’re doing, period.

I think we have a good class.
It would be great to get all five star recruits, but we are NCSU and only have so many choices.

SFN: This post should be bronzed for why we argue within the fanbase. What a sad, sad, sad perspective of self-worth. Unfortunately, it resembles the attitude of Lee Fowler and even Chancellor Oblinger far too closely.

If Wall goes to UNC or Duke, I will become a Wall hater.
His delay tactics suck. What the heck is the guy waiting on other than soaking up the attention. Makes no sense to me.

  6. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 04/28/2009 at 6:41 PM #

We will wait and see on this guy. The size is much needed and if he ever played any Australian Rules Football- it will be nice to have a physical big.

State and Lowe must build a team of good players to move forward. State is a long way from having the kind of program that can attract a lot of superstars and must focus on having solid experienced players every year.

I’m tired of the constant refrain that ‘State is a young team or is in a rebuilding year’. Not that those years don’t have to happen from time to time but State should be able to have solid seniors and juniors most every year. If you look at State’s program historically, except for a few years under Sloan, the program isn’t about having big studs year after year but being able to recruit and keep good players with a desire to win.

April, 2009: Jordan is a legitimate 7-footer who plays the game like a European big man. He likes to step away from the basket and shoot jumpshots out to 15 feet. He displays a very nice touch on his jumper and can consistenly knock them down. He is very thin so a Division I strength program will be a big part of his development. Right now he has limited post moves and is not a power player but added strength will help him in this part of his game. He is considered a top 10 center and a top 30 prospect overall among Australia’s 2009 prospects. He needs to become more assertive and bring a consistent effort when he arrives at N.C. State next season.

Since we are discussing something international… I’m in Cordoba, Argentina and saw signs for Argentina’s biggest university – UNC – that is, Universidad National de Cordoba. Oh, and wouldn’t you know it, Argentina’s colors are feminine baby blue and white.

Not much to say about 7-footers, except that he can’t hurt the team! Also, Aussies have a great sense of humor usually. That always helps a team.

  9. blackdom 04/28/2009 at 8:56 PM #

“He loves NC State” just like our coach so nothing but good things will happen. And to the person who posted that the 7foot aussie had a physical presence the kid is 7 ft 230 not very physical at all . He also averaged a couple of points per game for the jr national team. As far as offers USC did not offer him a scholarship it was a batlle between us,Boise State and yes Utah Valley State.

  10. mafpack 04/28/2009 at 9:50 PM #

Not an ACC-caliber athlete…scored his points by posting up people down low (which he won’t be able to do in the ACC). Not a particularly good defender and not particularly good at getting an outside shot off.

Anyone heard anything to the contrary?

Yeah, wasn’t asking you; not sure how you got those signals got mixed up?

RT, thank you for the honest reply. That’s exactly the kind of level headed reply I was expecting/hoping for.

Re-reading your post, I did realize that a time frame wasn’t given for when you actually spoke with the coach(s) in question – forgive my quickness to jump the gun on that reply.

I was left thinking, specifically after SFN’s hasty jump to defend you and the sudden deletion of comments asking you what I thought to be legitimate questions, that you were (as so many have done on this and other sites) trying to flex your ‘e-muscles’ by ‘exposing’ something new, even though it had long been known by the community. That doesn’t appear to have been the case, and I do apologize. Thank you for your contributions!

And dangit Joe Pack, stop writing what I’m thinking before I can get back to the PC to check the site! Grrrr… 🙂

I don’t think he’ll contribute much at all next year. I think he’d be a candidate for a redshirt on most teams. But I think it’s reasonable that he could play a roll in two or three years.

  12. mafpack 04/28/2009 at 11:53 PM #

I do wonder where ‘he’s not physical at all’ at 7ft and 230 keeps coming from on this and other boards. As has already been pointed out a few times here on SFN, there are plenty of big men who don’t look like Shaq (or need to for that matter) to be successful. Heck, Dirk is 7ft and only 245lbs. Not far off from our boy whose still got time to put weight on if he and the coaches (and he obviously does) feel he needs too.

Obviously I’d like to see him be able to put some lean mass on his frame and ‘play big’ underneath, but that style of play doesn’t always fit foreign born players who have developed a face up game from a young age.

Which leads me to my last thought. Hundreds of comments about JV today and yet, has anyone even seen a highlight vid of him (besides the 20 sec one on Scouts)? I’d love to actually see for myself what we’re taking on blind faith from various reports at the moment.

  13. Wulfpack 04/29/2009 at 4:59 AM #

I’m happy we got another big body who knows the game. He should come in handy in certain spots along the way, and in a couple of years could be a major contributor. For next year, however, we are in deep trouble in the post. We were a bad rebounding team this year, what is next year going to hold?

This Carolina Hurricanes team is something special. If you guys haven’t ben watching, you might want to start. Incredibly entertaining, and they play with so much passion.

I haven’t seen any besides that one, and we respect the Scout.com copyrights. Sorry that there isn’t anything to link to or post, but if I find it I will put it up for you.

Thanks Alpha, I figured you guys would have if you had anything 🙂
Just hoping that someone out there was better/luckier than me on the net and found a gem to share, here’s to hoping 😉

Let us hope that he is not the 2nd coming of that Greek guy from 85 that smoked all the time and played video games at the student union.

Frank Turnipseed wanted to cut that guys hair more than anything in the world.

SFN: This post should be bronzed for why we argue within the fanbase. What a sad, sad, sad perspective of self-worth. Unfortunately, it resembles the attitude of Lee Fowler and even Chancellor Oblinger far too closely.

However, that’s the way it is right now. Until you win with lesser talent, you won’t be able to get a lot of the better talent. That said, I think this guy could give us at least two really good years, so it’s a good pickup- if not for Sid, then for the guy who replaces Sid.

One thing that is definite- if Sid is canned after this year, the next guy will have a LOT more to work with then Sid did. Sendek left us nothing in the cupboard, which I think is the reason he ran off to the desert. He knew we had nothing, so he got while his market value was highest.

BJD: I’m not sure about that. Scholarship spacing will be a real problem for the next coach unless he runs some guys off. Instead of being short-handed early on, the roster will be stuffed to near-capacity with role players. Just a different kind of bad situation.

  18. choppack1 04/29/2009 at 7:01 AM #

Astral – who knows. Sendek didn’t leave the cupboard exactly bare – there wasn’t a lot of food in there – but he had the right pieces to do better than 10-24 in conference the last 2 years.

The situation Lowe walked into was really exaggerated by Fowler’s ineffective search and NC State’s subsequent decision to let the players out of their LOI. Sendek didn’t have anything to do w/ either of those.

Lowe came into a unique situation. I don’t think that program was 3 years away from respectability. All we really needed was a couple of good guards and we’d be right back in the NCAA tourney.

Simply put, thus far, he just hasn’t been able to put the pieces he’s needed to put together yet.

  19. sautz 04/29/2009 at 7:22 AM #

The one thing Lowe has proved over and over again is that he cannot win with lesser talent.

  20. jbpackfan 04/29/2009 at 7:38 AM #

90% of the above = bitching, and it seems like the comments to every post on the blog lately are the same. I think the only way to make most of you happy is a recruiting class of 5 5 star players and Sidney Lowe getting canned.

  21. PackBacker001 04/29/2009 at 7:55 AM #

JBPackfan, if we had a recruiting class of five 5 star players people would be building a statue of Sid.

    First Post:
A friend of mine told me about this site over a year ago. I have been a loyal reader ever since. There is a lot of good info flowing on this site. However, it seems to me that a lot of people get there feeling hurt. We are all adults here we should be able to speak our peace and accept the outcome.
I am fully aware that some of the frustration that surrounds people’s anger comes from our inability to win BB games. Unfortunately, I told my friend three years ago that a Sid coached squad lacked fundamentals. Rebounding and turnovers are just sticking to the fundamentals. Over the course of the last three seasons, I have not seen that change a whole lot. Sid look to be a good recruiter but that does not necessarily translate into success on the court.

Pano Fasoulas? I’d LOVE for Vandenburg to be as good as Fasoulas. He was a great shotblocker and gave us a few good minutes a game as a rebounder.

  24. Noah 04/29/2009 at 8:10 AM #

I think the only way to make most of you happy is a recruiting class of 5 5 star players and Sidney Lowe getting canned.

I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but honestly, I really don’t give a crap who Lowe gives a scholarship to and who he doesn’t. I think it’s pretty stupid to give one to someone like Davis, but aside from making that one particular value judgement…that’s pretty much where it ends.

When Lowe gets fired next year, I will be greatly relieved. It would be like coming home and finding out that someone started to break into your house, but all they did was damage the lock and maybe break a window…they didn’t actually steal anything.

That doesn’t make you HAPPY…but it’s better than what could have happened.

I do not just believe that Lowe is a bad coach. Hell…after Monte Kiffin, Tom Reed, Mike O’Cain, Les Robinson, and Chuck Amato, I can live with a bad coach. I think Lowe is a DESTRUCTIVE coach. I don’t think he’ll leave the cupboard bare. I’m worried about there actually BEING a cupboard when he’s fired.

Again…not speaking for anyone but myself. And yes, I know. I’m a horrible person and why don’t I pull for Carolina and the Baby Jesus cries when I say such things. Blah blah blah. But that really is what I believe.

  25. Noah 04/29/2009 at 8:11 AM #

Oh…and, just to be clear — none of that has anything to do with Vandenburg. I still think that was a decent (and logical) pickup.
