Pack Signs Aussie Center

vandenbergI have been waiting for a news article on Jordan Vandenberg to link to, but it doesn’t seem forthcoming. So, here’s a link to The Wolfpacker, with very little information.

My take is that Vandenberg is a 7-foot center project. However, that is not a criticism. He’s not a bad fallback option when you miss on elite lowpost prospects. And unlike Josh Davis, he did have an offer from another major program (USC), and another legitimate mid-major program (Nevada). So it doesn’t require blind faith – which obviously, Lowe and company haven’t shown they deserve – to have some cautious optimism.

Vandenberg’s role in 2009-10 should be extremely limited, but it does give NC State a 4th lowpost option for whenever two of Smith, Howell, and Horner get in foul trouble. I can’t imagine he’ll contribute much when he’s in the game as a freshman, but his height alone makes that preferable to, say, Johnny Thomas at the 4 while Horner plays center.

As a junior and senior, Vandenberg’s ceiling is probably that of a very useful player from a similar background – Georgia Tech’s Luke Schenscher.

Here’s a quote from Noah on another thread, which I agree with 100%:

I don’t mind taking a flyer on a seven footer (who doesn’t have arthritic knees and a heart condition). It’s guys like Davis or 6-0 unranked point guards that I question this late in the season.

Keep an eye on Vandesberg, he comes from the same school that developed Andrew Bogut and Vanderbilt’s Ogilvy. Not saying he WILL become either of those two, but this is certainly not a blind faith fall back 7 footer.

In terms of Josh Davis, I think every program should take a chance on a kid like a Josh Davis every once in a while. The kid has a lot of potential, loves the Wolfpack, and is willing to work hard to not only make himself better, but make the team better. Had Lowe been more successful the past few seasons, I’m pretty sure we all would have loved the offer saying it’s “nice to make a kid’s dream come true every once in a while.” It’s certainly a controversial offer, but at least the kid loves the university and is willing to work hard.

Now tell us WHY they don’t understand the offer, with solid coaching insights, reasons and opinions – then we won’t care as much who your sources are. I fully expect that you probably do have friends or friends of friends who are coaches/assistants/office clerks at the high school or collegiate levels, but I’d rather hear their reasons behind the scenes than blanket statements fed whole-hog like this.

Not an ACC-caliber athlete…scored his points by posting up people down low (which he won’t be able to do in the ACC). Not a particularly good defender and not particularly good at getting an outside shot off.

Anyone heard anything to the contrary?

  4. Noah 04/28/2009 at 3:24 PM #

Why do people keep mentioning “He loves NCSU!” as though that mattered?

How exactly will that help him when he’s going up against the best amateur players in the world?

  5. Alpha Wolf 04/28/2009 at 3:25 PM #

Hey, I am just saying that’s what their site says (in this case, doesn’t say.) Could be an oversight, or it could be a mistake that has repeated itself across the web. After all, none of these sites ever copy each other, do they?

    I don’t know myself.

    But I did find this:

“I also saw Josh play more than several games on the AAU circuit. Josh played with my son. He definitely has range! WHY SO MAD??
    laurabharris”

I’ve contacted the Gaters for a definitive answer and will post whatever they say in reply.

^^I heard he also has a decent first step…so he had some blow-bys against bigger defenders. Basically he is a “junk” player. And I don’t mean junk in a bad way. He can jump out that gym and he can run around and cause havoc. Like half the kids at Clemson. You know…Potter and the white kid that’s the tweener, that’s what I hear. But that was from some of my friends at 850. They are all UNC fans so sometimes they give me bad intel.

“Why do people keep mentioning “He loves NCSU!” as though that mattered.”

I think it’s because at the end of the day it’s really about education and the school. And Josh’s intentions are pretty pure. He loves State and he wants to come here. Now in most cases thats not going to be good enough to get you a free education…it definately didn’t work for me. But every once in a while you take a chance on a character kid that bleeds red.

Without having seen him play, Davis’skillset seems similar to a Robert Brickey. When Brickey was in high school, he was a pretty highly regarded recruit. Of course, to show you how “bad” the science was then, he couldn’t fall out of a boat and hit water.

He also sounds similar to the Wallace kid who signed w/ tOSU. At one time Wallace was a projected Top 30 high school player. He stopped growing and never developed the perimeter game.

I’m still holding out hope for him. Recruiting experts and coaches missed on Stephon Curry. Those same experts then turned right around and missed on his brother.

Talent definitely slips through the cracks, especially if the talent is under 6-7 and/or doesn’t play for the well-known AAU squads. This is also exactly how Wake ended up w/ Johnson. (He was 6-7, but was from South Dakota.) Wake found him early and pushed hard for him.

As stated earlier, when your previous finds haven’t set the world on fire – your next ones will be questioned. And some of us wonder how the current staff is doing when it comes to “coaching up” the talent that is on the squad.

We’ll see – lots of key questions for the program will be answered in the 2009-2010 season.

he couldn’t fall out of water and hit a boat.

Do you mean “he couldn’t fall out of a boat and hit water?”

  10. Noah 04/28/2009 at 3:55 PM #

If he’s half the athlete that Brickey was, he’ll contribute here.

    If not…hey, he loves NCSU.

IF no Wall then I say hold the scholly for a class of Harrow, Mychal Parker, and Cothron next year.

I think every program should take a chance on a kid like a Josh Davis every once in a while. The kid has a lot of potential

    What makes you say that?

  13. packbackr04 04/28/2009 at 4:01 PM #

big diference… Wallace and Brickey were top level recruits… top level programs have never heard of josh davis.

  14. Bubba 04/28/2009 at 4:03 PM #

Not that I care, but I looked at my Bob Gibbons Tourny roster from last year and Josh Davis is listed as a 6’5″ pf for NC Gators Blue. The team was runner-up in the 08 NC AAU State Tourny

  15. pakfanistan 04/28/2009 at 4:25 PM #

    What makes you say that?

I dunno, he’s supposedly still growing, is fairly long and has good athleticism.

That has all the makings of potential.

  16. Joe Pack 04/28/2009 at 4:29 PM #

I have sources in the coaching world too. I just wondered if the dude had any in the “college” coaching ranks? Not calling anyone out, it was a simple curiosity question. A college b ball caoch is in my Sunday School class. He’s heard of Josh Davis, thinks he got a good shot of doing well at this level. Meant no harm, didn’t realize the site was “touchy’? Seems to be some sort of underground faternity here or something?

Anyway, I like hearing he grew up a State Fan, Loves NCSU, and wanted to play at NCSU. We need to hear more of that and I cannot understand why that would bother anyone. You will hear the UNC And ECU version of that over and over from their fans, coaches, and media. never heard any of their fans complain about it. Go pack!

  17. Joe Pack 04/28/2009 at 4:34 PM #

HS Coach ‘Davis is an athletic Freak”

    YES That means tremendous potential.

We rolled the dice on potential. He is here so lets hope it pays off. As a fan, I am rooting for him not against him.

  18. Thinkpack17 04/28/2009 at 4:35 PM #

    ^Glad to hear it.

Here is a link to Josh Davis’s stats and who they were against.. He was in the same conf. as Garuis Adams that’s going to Miami.

i guess my question is, do we even have enough scholarships to offer Parker, Cothron, and Leslie

I think we have two or three schollies free for 2010, depending on if we add another player.

Last year we we lost (1) Harris, (2), McCauley, (3) Costner, (4) Fells, and (5) Ferguson.

Next year we lose (1) Horner and (2) Degand

Currently on the team and continuing after next year will be (1) Javi, (2) Mays, (3) Williams (4) Thomas, (5) Smith

We have seven open scholarships for the 2009 and 2010 class and 5 players still on scholarship, so we can offer 8 players total for both classes or I could be missing something.

  21. VaWolf82 04/28/2009 at 4:42 PM #

No State fan is “rooting” against any kid that signs for State in any sport. However, State’s BB team needs ACC caliber players and needs them yesterday. If Sidney is resorting to recruiting “potential” at the swing positions, then this doesn’t look like a good sign to me.

  22. Joe Pack 04/28/2009 at 4:53 PM #

5 Recruits 3 solid recruits that equal a top 20 class by themselves + a 7 footer + 1 hometown kid with potential. That’s a damn good class by Bob Gibbons and ACC standards!

VaWolf82 Have you not seen Sidney’s class rankings this year?

We will not know who was a good sign till 4 years from now, will we? But posting all this negative about Davis is not a good “Fan” welcome. So we can only see who roots for Davis or who roots against him so they can say they were right. I guess Lowe fans will root for him and many of you will not.

  23. rtpack24 04/28/2009 at 4:56 PM #

Regarding Davis I was not posting what I’ve read just posting what several college coaches thoughts were. Not one of them said they had not heard of him, they were surprised that we offered him at that point in recruiting season. I did not get into detailed discussion on the weaknesses and strenghs of his game. I have seen several of our recruits play and we have some good players coming. I have never seen Davis play so I have no opinion of his game. I am certainly not saying that anyone told me the kid can not play. The people that I talked with were surprised by us offering him at that time. I hope he turns out to be all world. I do not post often and will never mention a coach’s name when they have talked to me in confidence.

  24. McPete 04/28/2009 at 4:58 PM #

“I take it from your “just the summer camps” you don’t think having a player for a week in your camp, going through your drills, is much help in evaluating him”

    Greywolf,
you mentioned in an earlier comment that you didn’t “pretend to understand recruiting”. you are right, you don’t, so quit commenting on it. scout.com doesn’t classify recruits on how well they perform at nc state’s summer camp. they aren’t there. the staff does, for sure, but not recruiting sites. they have combines in the spring and summer and run guys through drills, time 40’s, etc. that’s what i was referring to.

TOB is the winningest football coach in BC’s history and people here have alot of faith in his judgement. Sidney Lowe has won 32% of his acc games. but if you want to compare the two, go right ahead.

  25. VaWolf82 04/28/2009 at 5:12 PM #

VaWolf82 Have you not seen Sidney’s class rankings this year?

Yes I have. My concern is with the 2010 class…both with who signs and how many scholarships we will have available.

I’m also concerned with the recent trend in BB recrutiing. IIRC, the last three decisions were:
    1) Leslie decommitting
    2) Davis committment
    3) JV committment

I see reasons for concern with this trend….not necessarily panic, but still it concerns me. If this trend hasn’t been reversed by the fall signing period, then it may be time for panic.
