Pack Signs Aussie Center

vandenbergI have been waiting for a news article on Jordan Vandenberg to link to, but it doesn’t seem forthcoming. So, here’s a link to The Wolfpacker, with very little information.

My take is that Vandenberg is a 7-foot center project. However, that is not a criticism. He’s not a bad fallback option when you miss on elite lowpost prospects. And unlike Josh Davis, he did have an offer from another major program (USC), and another legitimate mid-major program (Nevada). So it doesn’t require blind faith – which obviously, Lowe and company haven’t shown they deserve – to have some cautious optimism.

Vandenberg’s role in 2009-10 should be extremely limited, but it does give NC State a 4th lowpost option for whenever two of Smith, Howell, and Horner get in foul trouble. I can’t imagine he’ll contribute much when he’s in the game as a freshman, but his height alone makes that preferable to, say, Johnny Thomas at the 4 while Horner plays center.

As a junior and senior, Vandenberg’s ceiling is probably that of a very useful player from a similar background – Georgia Tech’s Luke Schenscher.

Here’s a quote from Noah on another thread, which I agree with 100%:

I don’t mind taking a flyer on a seven footer (who doesn’t have arthritic knees and a heart condition). It’s guys like Davis or 6-0 unranked point guards that I question this late in the season.

JV from the little that I’ve read/seen about him, seems to be a legit pick up. As much as any 7′ foreign born player can be a legit recruit. In general, I do like the fundamentals of the NCAA’s international players, so here’s to hoping that JV comes in ready to work with a solid foundation laid at AIS.

It was nice to see his team pic with another player that looked to be his height or taller. Hopefully this means he’s had a chance to play against and defend players of his own size (whether or not the caliber matches that of an ACC center remains to be seen).

Welcome to the Wolfpack family JV! I for one, truly hope you have a chance to grow and develop under Coach Lowe, Coach Harris and the entire staff here at NC State, and that you become one of the all time greats! Wonder if Tommy would consider coming back to work with JV, wouldn’t that be cool…

I don’t think Leslie or Wall are even options at this point.

    noah^^

agreed, if they were, you wouldnt have seen sid offer Davis or V-berg.

    I agree Noah-

Im really hoping for Cothron and Parker to sign with us for 2010. both are 5 star players and Sid seems to be making quite an impression on Cothron so im told. Harrow is good friends with parker and apparently he is trying to sway parker to get intrested in State but you know what happens when players try to recruit other players……

Thanks to Packfanistan & Alpha for ‘centering’ posts to provide balance…
Thanks to BJD95 for a solid description of what we know, without speculation and spectorating on the kid before we even see him. The description of someone 7′ and who can RUN is a clear break from Sloan’s “7′ awkward post-Burleson beanpoles” that haunt the old timers’ memories. The Schensher comparison is apt as a low-water mark and declares that patience is due him.
So let it be, oh ye posters of this fair board.

What I read is that AIS takes 12 of the very best players in the country. And, also that JV is very athletic for a 7 footer. If he is one of the best in his class in the whole of Australia then he must have some skills. I am excited to see him in a Wolfpack uniform. By the way Nevada made a special trip recently to try and sign him. That is what you get you rip-off-artists.

Josh Davis played AAU for the NC Gaters. Very well known AAU team. AAU Coaches know who he is, don’t know why anyone would say otherwise. You get picked to be on the Gaters, you just don’t sign up. NC Gaters have a good link to NCSU. I believe Johnny Thomas, Simmons, and Bennerman played for them. If Davis AAU coach thinks he can play at this level, that’s saying lots. Davis is a bit of a late bloomer so he wasn’t on the charts going into his senior year. I hear he still growing and he did get a recent invite to a Scout Elite 80. I think he is a good discovery by our staff. Remember they pegged Wall before anyone else did.

Davis has potential, he put up lots of points in HS. His mother is an NCSU grad. We have lots of reasons to want this young man to be a part of our basketball team and do well. I think he will.

Talked to several coaches that think the Aussie has a big upside. I have not talked to anyone involved in college basketball that understands the Davis offer. One coach did tell me he thought Seton Hall was starting to show interest in Davis but as far as he knew we were the only team at that point to offer the kid.

SFN: This poster DOES have sources in the coaching world, and you don’t need to question his credentials. Thanks.

We won’t know for sure until they come here.
Not going to throw anyone under the bus before they get here.

I mean, even Javi showed flashes of being useful his freshmen year- and I still remember him sneaking into UNC’s huddle. I remember saying that by his senior year, we’d appreciate him, even if he wasn’t the greatest player.

As for as project 7′ dudes go, this dude is miles better then Big Lew, so we could end up with a real good player.

Worst case his freshman year he offers us five hacks on someone.

“And don’t compare football recruiting to basketball recruiting. last time i checked there is no football aau circuit, just the summer camps and video footage used to evaluate football players”
    `
McPete – I take it from your “just the summer camps” you don’t think having a player for a week in your camp, going through your drills, is much help in evaluating him. You should tell TOB this. He want offer a QB who doesn’t come to his camp.
    `
We have got to do something about the reading comprehension courses at NCSU. Somebody can’t tell comparing criticism of TOB vs SL to comparing fb and bb recruiting.

“The Schensher comparison is apt as a low-water mark and declares that patience is due him.”

If he does as well as Schenser, he will be a GREAT pick-up. I think it’s foolhardy to call this the low-water mark…rather I’d say it’s “mid-high” since Luke became a very legit ACC center by his final year.

  12. codebrown 04/28/2009 at 2:33 PM #

Great get this late. He gives us instant size (height anyways) up front, which we need after McCauley and Costner’s departure. Can’t complain.

  13. BJD95 04/28/2009 at 2:35 PM #

Regarding Wall, I believe that Duke has taken NC State’s place as his “safety” school. He doesn’t really want to go there (like he didn’t want to come here), but if he decides he MUST stay local and can’t work anything out with UNC, that’s where he’ll go. Coach K kissed the Cliftons’ rings and impressed the Mom, which allowed them to usurp NC State’s role.

I would be very surprised if Wall goes anywhere other than Kentucky (75% likely) or UNC (20% likely). But Duke is as happy to take their 5% shot as NC State was for the past year-plus.

Again, if you want to bitch about the site being “negative,” your posts will get deleted. Make it a crusade, and your account gets deleted. In our view, such posts add zero value to the site.

Talk up what YOU see as positive all you want, but don’t bitch about how we run things.

  14. Greywolf 04/28/2009 at 2:36 PM #

Noah, you ask “What does it tell you when a guy who knows EVERY SINGLE AAU player in the triangle has never heard of Davis?” What it tells me is your AAU bb pimp doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground unless this statement “Davis plays for the NC Gaters in AAU” is totally erroneous.

  15. Greywolf 04/28/2009 at 2:48 PM #

“So it doesn’t require blind faith – which obviously, Lowe and company haven’t shown they deserve – to have some cautious optimism.”
    `
This oxymoronic gem is as good as some that Yogi Berra came up with. Hello? If they “deserve” faith, it isn’t “blind” is it? Rick, please don’t try to answer, you’ll just make it worse.
    `
This is in the same ball park as my brain-fart statement putting Wall and Davis playing for the same coach. In that abomination, all I wss doing was making the point that there are other possible stories besides the one our AAU basketball pimp tells us.

  16. packbackr04 04/28/2009 at 2:50 PM #

im confused… is SFN saying that rtpack24 has sources? or saying that rtpack was questioning some other posters sources?

SFN: rtpack24 has sources. A deleted comment was calling him out to “list” his sources.

either way, it is what it is now. i have a quick question though. how many schollies does this leave for us next yr. assuming Harrow takes Horners schollie. who else free’s up a scholly? is degand in his final yr of eligibility? i guess my question is, do we even have enough scholarships to offer Parker, Cothron, and Leslie (which doesnt really matter since leslie isnt coming here)?

  17. Gene 04/28/2009 at 2:50 PM #

Gene – I think that’s a fair comparison. Of course, I don’t know if we have a James Johnson in this class or an Aminu in the next one.

If we’re really following the Wake Forest model, our Aminu-type player would be in 2011. Forget what year Johnson entered, but I think we will be getting comparable players out of high school in next year’s class and hopefully in 2010 as well.

So far 2009 looks to be a solid recruiting class. If we can land a good sixth player, hopefully it can lay the foundation for future success.

“you will always find more diamonds in the rough in football recruiting. always.”

This maybe true, but finding a diamond in basketball brings in a MUCH higher pay out. You find that killer Offensive lineman…he’s going to win you 2 more games. You find that killer shooting guard…he’ll get you to the elite 8.

Those kind of “jokes” can be, if not terminal, bad for your health in some neighborhoods in Garner. Your old friend needs to put a lid on it.

Not very good ‘coaching’ resources apparently. Anyone that can read already ‘knew’ that info from the handful of articles already penned on the topic.

Published over a month ago here:
    http://blogs.newsobserver.com/swakesports/on-the-recruiting-front-davis-talks-about-his-ncsu-commitment

“Davis didn’t need to prep after he began fielding scholarship offers from low-major schools like Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern and High Point as well as mid-major schools like UNC-Wilmington and Old Dominion. Even Big East school Seton Hall was moving in late, but had yet to offer.”

Now tell us WHY they don’t understand the offer, with solid coaching insights, reasons and opinions – then we won’t care as much who your sources are. I fully expect that you probably do have friends or friends of friends who are coaches/assistants/office clerks at the high school or collegiate levels, but I’d rather hear their reasons behind the scenes than blanket statements fed whole-hog like this. Thanks!

“how many schollies does this leave for us next yr. assuming Harrow takes Horners schollie.”

From my count we have one in the hole now. Horner and Degand are out next year…so that frees up two more. Harrow takes one of the three. So if we don’t sign anyone else we will have 2 rides available to offer next year.

The NC Gater AAU alumni page does not mention Josh Davis:

    http://www.gateraau.com/alumni.html

Nor does it list him on their current teams.

  23. Thinkpack17 04/28/2009 at 3:05 PM #

^^That’s probably because he’s not “Alumni” yet. Not saying I know about all this “inside info”. Or that I know a lot about Davis. But I think I do remember seeing him as a member of the NC gaters. JS.

  24. mafpack 04/28/2009 at 3:09 PM #

I do wonder, the only thing I can find with the Gater’s and Josh, from a 10 second google search, is:

    http://www.vype.com/raleighdurham/general/2962

Check that, ESPN, Scout and Rivals all list his AAU team as the NC Gaters. But nothing, as Alpha pointed out, from the Gater’s site. Sadly though, the site does not look to be very well maintained. One of the ‘newest’ Alumni listed there is our very own Johnny Thomas who was a Senior back in 2007.
